Resident Evil to Nintendo DS!
« on: August 24, 2005, 12:13:21 PM »
Now you can have a zombie in your pocket! Wait, is that a good thing?

In this week's Famitsu, it was revealed that Resident Evil will be making its way onto Nintendo's new portable system, just in time for Biohazard's 10th anniversary.

Essentially a remake (yes another one) of the original PlayStation Resident Evil, it is not yet clear whether the game will be going fully 3D or not. There are screens showing off a new First Person camera angle, but whether this is a bonus mode or not is not clear at this time.

Graphics appear slightly better than the original PSX release, though there are no official screenshots released as of yet. There's no word yet on extras on this new game, but one neat little detail is that evidently players will have to wipe blood off the screen after shooting zombies in a particularly gruesome fashion.

More details as they're released.

I'm honestly surprised Capcom didn't just take the easy way out and just port the original to the PSP... actually, they probably will, they'll just wait until a few months before the DS game is released and THEN say they're porting it to the PSP.

I would be happier if the game was a REmake of Resident Evil 2 since we already got the first one...

They should make an original game instead of another remake.  I think one reason Capcom keeps remaking RE is that they're afraid to tamper too much with the storyline, which many RE fans take WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too seriously.

"I think one reason Capcom keeps remaking RE is that they're afraid to tamper too much with the storyline"

I figured it was because Capcom rehashes everything until absolutely no one gives a sh!t and then rehashes it some more.  Or since the sequels have become more about shooting they want to recreate the initial horror focused design but are afraid they won't get it right if they try to make something new.

By my unresearched count there's been:
RE (Playstation)
RE (Saturn)
RE: Director's Cut (Playstation)
RE: Director's Cut (Dreamcast)
REmake (Gamecube)
and now RE (DS)

So this will be variation six.  There might be seven.  I don't remember if Capcom released a "dual shock" version of RE: Director's Cut like they did with RE2.

I don't think RE was ever released for the Saturn or the Dreamcast (or the PC for that matter).

I could be wrong, but I think that the only RE games released on Sega's system was RE2, RE3, and RE:CV.

Wow, you guys are sure down on this. I've never played the first one, so I'm looking forward to it. Also, I think all the cool stylus interaction they're talking about makes up for it being a remake. Heh, they could also make the microphone record sound, so that if you make even a peep the zombies will come right for you. Then you can sweep the blood off the screen and shout "Who else wants some!?!" and get a response. Priceless.

I can confirm that RE was on PC considering I have it! IN fact it was the first version I played (I encountered the dog window smashing scene with my speakers turned up all the way, talk about freaky).

Incorrect, RE was Released for the Sega Saturn, and RE:CV was released  for Dreamcast and later a port of RE2 and RE3

same for PC, there where RE2 and RE3 released.

The RE storyline is full of LOLs and overkill.

The most important elements are the fact that Barry Burton survives the original mansion incident, with no help from that wuss Chris, thanks to Barry's superior hand to hand combat skills and context-sensitive A-button "Barry-PUNCH!" special moves.

I'm sorry you fail to realize Barry was just that innovative, so innovative that he had context-senstive A-button action despite being on PlayStation.

Wasn't Barry played by John Ratzenberger in the -original- Live Action FMV RE?

Yep...another remake but adding some play mechanics to suite the DS...  Hey, I got a better idea!  Make a new story (doesn't have to be a huge revalation or anything, perhaps a side story) and have the DS's features in mind as you make it from the ground up.  Hey, maybe even put some time into it and it could be considered a valuable addition to the series and RE fans may even buy DS's to play it.  As it is I don't see it as being a system seller because everyone and their mother has probably played it in some form or the other and there are a lot of versions of it to choose from (one being the one on Cube that IMO can't be topped on the DS with some small additions)

So what say you guys?  New DS features in a rehash or a completely new side-quest with many unique features?  (as if it really would matte to Capcom what we say )

Do yourself a favor and go buy Remake on GCN.  You can get it for $20.  Awesome.

That would be excellent if I didn't already have REmake.  Hurry up and find me a RE2 & RE3 combo pack.

Better yet, release the remake of Resident Evil Gaiden, an "Ultimate Edition," so that the world can re-experience the adventure Barry and Leon went thru together.  It'll use all those nifty new stylus features, plus innovative character-specific special moves.

So what if it has the same story. Every Mario game has essentially the same story. As long as, like the Gamecube version, the DS's RE has new puzzles and gameplay mechanics it's as good as a whole new game. Sure an entirely original and captivating story along the lines of RE4's would be a nice bonus but somehow I doubt that if Capcom attempted to come up with another original storyline for this game it would be anywhere near as good. In fact, it would probably suck.
It's best they just stick with the classic storyline and concentrate on using the DS's features.

After playing Resident Evil 4, I don't think I could go back to the...uh..."quirky" control scheme of past Resident Evils.  Think this game might have better play control?  Free roaming=good.  "Gas" button=bad.

A combo pack of RE2 and RE3 would be kind of funny because RE3 is complete garbage...On the other hand, RE2 is completely awesome, so whatever price you'd have to pay for a combo of the two would be worth it just for RE2...
