I don't think that games like zelda or mario are very well suited to a system that uses difficulty levels. I don't mind the system that exists now in those games where the difficulty is there for you to find, I just wish that the main quest in recent games was a little bit harder. People act like dying in a game is the end of the world, as long as the game is well designed, getting back to where you died shouldn't be too long or tedious. Then you learn and progress. When I posted about the window of opportunity for hitting bosses, I was by no means suggesting that things become a test of reflexes, I just want to spend some time running and dodging attacks before I bring'em down. I want to feel enough resistence that there is a little bit of accomplishment when I beat a boss.

I think I might be coming off a little bit harsh. I loved TP, WW and mario sunshine. I enjoy these games because they are more than just a challenge, they are an experience. Nintendo has fun locked down, but the sense of accomplishment which has always been part of that experience we all play to get has been slipping.

A friend of mine and myself actually had an OoT challenge where we skipped every heart container and beat the game using only 3 hearts. The rules were that if you died you must either hit save and continue (so it would count your death on your file) or start the whole game over. While it did provide a few moments of panic here and there, the competition was bust in the end as we tied with zero deaths.

I think with nintendo games, there has always been difficulty to be found. Not necessarily going as far as skipping hearts, but usually there are optional side quests and things of that nature to test you. TP had the cave of ordeals, for instance. However, while i do enjoy and appreciate these little extras, I deffinately think that the main quest could be more difficult. The thing that ticks me off most about bosses isn't that they die in three hits, it's that the three hits are often delivered swiftly and one immediately after the other. The window in which you're able the hit most these bosses it too huge, and after they're hit, they often open themselves up to be hit again almost immediately. Sometimes I kill a boss without ever finding out what attacks the boss even has. The water temple boss in TP for instance never touched me, granted that battle was epic and fun, but I still to this day don't even know if that boss even has an attack...... Sorry I let that get away from me a little.

And to GP: The last time I played a difficult mario platformer was in sunshine when you enter those warp zones where you lose your pack.

At least metroid has always been a haven for true difficulty.

This is an awesome thread.

I found that after I beat K.Rool in DCK2 the first time I didn't have trouble doing it again.
The boss battle for metroid prime 2 was intense every time though, I enjoyed the difficulty.
I think i would add in Carnage from Maximum Carnage, although I usually had more trouble getting through prospect park 1&2.
Also, even though it wasn't the boss of the game,  the statue from Ness' dream in Earthbound was the bane of my existence for a while, but the reward was se very worth it.
The boss of final fantasy 4 was pretty hard, but was more frustrating than anything because of the hike you would have to make to get to him again if you lost.
For some reason I had trouble with the Dahaka from the second PoP.....

I know there are more but I'll have to think about it.

I'm loving this game. I find that i hardly even use the lock on anymore, only if i need to do some quick dodging or am going one on one with someone. Does anyone else wish that they could whip enemies against walls with the grapple beam......

Well, right you are. I guess it wasn't so difficult. Thanks.

I have some fond memories of this game, but I never owned it. Maybe I'll pick it up if it shows up on virtual consol.

I've been something of a lurker in these forums for some time now, I actually read them quite a bit to pass time but I don't post much. However, this has been bothering me for quite some time and I could really use the help of you guys to remember this video game from my childhood. Originally, I thought that it was the 1st final fantasy because of the rpg-ish elements to the game play, but I recently borrowed FF1 off a friend and realized that it definately was not it. I remember that it was closer to an action rpg and it was for the SNES. In the first level you meet a person who joins your party whos weapon is an axe, and after the dungeon, he leaves the party and gives you the axe. This continues as you enter new areas, you meet someone, they fight with you through a dungeon then leave and give you their weapon. The weapons usually have some affect that can be used, for example the axe could cut down small trees in your way. I can't remember if their was a seperate turn based battle screen or not though. Also I remember their being a level where you go inside a tree (I was reminded of this both in OoT and Golden Sun) and an ice cave-ish level, but those are pretty standard video game settings i guess...

Well, I'm sorry if that's not a lot to go on, but it's all I really remember right now. If I remember anything else I'll be sure to post it.

Thanks in advance.

Smoke: I don't play every game for a tough challenge either, but i'm saying that I appreciated it from the Metroid games. I even would say that I enjoyed the star fox adventures: dinosaur planet game that my brother got for GCN. As long as I'm having fun in a game, I will buy it, play through it and recommend it to others. Metroid just gave me something different that I don't get from a lot of other games and I don't want to lost that.

Props to amodaus1,

If you can't deal with difficulty, play a mario game, or kirby, or something shiney and fun. I'm not saying that I don't love these games, or that they don't have their own difficult parts, but to me MP 1+2 were games that finally made me work for anything I got. The market has just been so flooded with crap and easy to beat garbage that people have gone soft and start complaining when a worthwhile challenge comes allong.

I'm willing to admit that all fans of the metroid series should get a fair crack at beating the games, but decreasing the difficulty brings metroid closer to mediocrity, and the last thing I want is for metroid to become another bland title. If you didn't complete the game then you missed out on a cool ending, and it's your fault. I'm sorry i have so very little sympathy for you, but my 12 year old brother beat the game a week after I did, so I don't know what your excuse is.

I don't mind if they cut back on the large scale backtracking in MP3, because it's something that isn't a high priority on the list of things that made the first two games great, but I still want to be challenged by the fights, the puzzles and the bosses.

I loved echos, thought it was definately better than the first prime, but we all know that it's the game that does it first that makes the bigger impact. I actually appreciated the difficulty of echos and I really hope that they don't make it easier because people complained about not being able to beat the final boss. After beating Twilight Princess I feel that I need to meet a boss that will kill me a few times before I kill it, and metroid usually delivers on that front, I just hope it doesn't stop.

Nintendo Gaming / Characters You'd Like to See on SSBB

After reading the conspiracy theory thread about the level shown in the SSBB trailer I had to ask, who do you want to see on the new smash bros?

I thought the suggestion of Belmont from CV was a cool idea, might be a stretch though...

I'll be keeping a look out for a few virtual consol games, but other than the obvious I'd like to see:

1. Earthbound (if they're going to keep putting Ness in smash bros games they should let people know where he's from)
2. Mario RPG (I borrowed this off a friend and have wanted to play it again for quite some time)
3. Kirby Superstar.. or allstar or whatever the title was... (same deal as Mario RPG)

Nintendo Gaming / RE:free wii points
« on: December 01, 2006, 07:02:23 PM »
I'm not sure if I heard this somewhere or I'm just making it up, but regardless, it's a decent idea that I think Nintendo should use for it's wii points. Can you accumulate wii points without actually buying them, that is to say by perhaps completing a game on the most difficult setting or getting a certain percentage in a game? I think that this would be a great idea, as it rewards the toils of the bigger fans, who are the ones more likely to want to buy older games from virtual consol.

Just an idea, what do you people think?
