My First Rant: A Gamer/Brony story here.
« on: December 11, 2012, 04:10:20 PM »
For those not in the know and outside of the few people I could trust with this info I am leaving the forums. I have been planning this for about 2 years but I wanted to finis hosting the 2 Mafia games I had planned from back then.So this has been a long time coming for me and I have been very emotional writing out this post.

My reasons for leaving are many and mainly have to do with the forums. There is also a few other members who have left from here and I share the same issues and concerns. So lets get to the first.

Bullying is a major one and at times I have seen people on the forums go and rail on a person just because they were posting a certain way here. Tendoboy's posts are a good example of people who did this. I personally think he was just trying to bring up conversation on the forum with his posts. Also there were people who were bullied at times in the past who became the bullies to fit in with the in crowd so they themselves would not get bullied. It can become an endless cycle.

This next one is one of the reasons I left the forum for a month during E3 this year. It just happened each year at E3 and also happened all through out the year from many people and it just got to much and that is Entitlement. This has more to do with being patient with Nintendo but also have to do with your fellow gamers. Nintendo sometimes can't release some info right away because their competitors will steal it. As for our fellow gamers it is usually a good idea to embrace all gamers no matter who they are because once we do that games will be ore accepted then they already are by everyone and not just something gamers keep to themselves while clawing at anyone else that doesn't fit in with the gamers mold whatever that is.

One of the most important things when keeping a good forum is to know how much moderation on the forums is enough and this forum has tons of topics that breaks the rules on the forums. There is a certain amount of tact needed to run a forum as a mod while enforcing the rules while keeping the members happy. I find the mods here are not very good here at doing this. I am a mod at 2 and I guess it comes down to the people there. Mods on the forum here can be condescending at times of the forum members.

This goes with the condescending as well. This isn't a good place to be a fan of Nintendo anymore. You have to temper your posts with qualifiers. In other words you can not be a overly positive Nintendo fan you have to put in some small negative that Nintendo has done and this also goes for Sony and Microsoft. You are singled out and put in SUPERs Fanboy euthanization station topic. I kinda joked in one of the topics here that I hoped that this place doesn't become a hive mind but in a way it has. It has become a place for negativity more then anything little by little until there is hardly any positivity left on the forums.People will be tired of it and then leave like I am and then it will be more pessimistic then anything else.

Final issue/concern I have and then I will get to how I would fix this and then positive stuff. You are a trooper for reading this far.

Final issue is that the site is having like many other big sites is that it is starting to have misleading titles for the talkback threads and or blog posts that have a headline that just is there for clicks and or to cause the reader to get emotional upset and post a comment and keep the discussion going. I know I have seen in the past there have been articles like this in the archive but when I went to go back to look for but they were gone from the site. There was a Rick Powers one that was pretty off base and got lots of comments but I can't find it anywhere on the site. Few others come to mind but that was the most forefront in my mind at this time.
I know some people get their jollys posting in these type of topics to feel like the thoughts are justified but if you need to find a better way of getting hits then posting these type of pieces or click bait.

I would personally do three things that will solve most of these things.

One get rid of the Karma system or modify it so that is just positive points.Maybe have it so that you can plus a post kinda like how it works in Miiverse.  It indirectly causes division and is a passive aggressive way of dealing with people how it is set up currently. Also if the mods come back with that it is dumb for people to complain and the mods and admins came up with it then isn't it just place back on the mods. Just saying that that that it could use some work or be done with altogether.

Get better mods that can enforce the rules of the forums and can stay on the forums most of the time. I'd like to stay to mod but I can't for obvious reasons. 1. I am leaving as per this post. 2. I am a mod on two forums. 3. I have many other things I need to take care of in real life.

Finally if you have read that then congrats you are halfway through. The above is for the mods and admins the rest below is for everyone else.

I will say my most fun time I had here was when I was playing with people on the forums and actually talking about games and what they were doing in real life. In games like Animal Crossing: City Folk, Tri,SSBB, and Mario Kart Wii. I liked just chatting with people in Animal Crossing:City Folk and the generosity as far as sharing my time and items and helping out people and any stories from real life we had. For Tri it was just the loyalty and kindness to all I played with and that I stuck with them and worked with them in the game. Super Smash Brothers Brawl I can honestly say that that it made me a better gamer skillwise because I didn't really care much for competition type stuff but I worked at the game and for the most part I do pretty good at it and many other games since. As for Mario Kart Wii it made me enjoy gaming again and it brought the community aspect to games again.

The Brony part of this story actually started for me on this forum and it wasn't because of that topic that I like to post in a lot these days but from someone from these very forums and he faved a video back in I want to say February 2011 or at least that's when the episode came out for Sonic Rainboom. I didn't really click on the video at the time but I just saw the thumbnail and I thought hmm this person on the NWR forums faved this well that's interesting. I put it out of my head for a while but then I heard about the show through other outlets that I watched like a Monster Hunter podcast and it was near the end of the cast but didn't get it.

After a while at the start of August 2011 the word meme pops in my head for some reason so I look it up and I find the Know your meme channel on YT. So I was interested in memes so I did a marathon and pretty much watched all the videos that night and the newest video they had uploaded was about the show. After I finish watching the videos I go check out Ponychan and Equestria Daily and check out if there was any games and there was one that intersted me and it was a mix of Zelda and MLP and it was being made. I look up the name of the game and then I find this 300 page topic about the show and I lurk through the topic while watching each episode and then watching any fan content that was in the topic till I was caught up after about 2 weeks season 2 was about to start and I have been more happy since. It took many months from when I got into the show from August 2011 to December 2011 to come back on here and post about it because I wasn't to sure how anyone was going to respond to it. Part of the reason I decided to become a Brony was because a I have a niece so we can bond together with it, there was just to much negativity on here and this was just another way of me injecting positivity on here, the other is that it is a darn good show and everyone should at least give it a chance. It has relatable stories anyone can relate to.One of the newer episodes called Too Many Pinkie Pies is pretty much me nowadays to many things I want to do but not enough of me to go around. Also the characters are people that you probably would know in real life if they were actual people.

If for some reason after that wall of text you want to get in touch with me well I am on twitter under two accounts. @NintempleMaxi and @Knuckleshy the former is my personal one and the latter is my brony account so you can talk to me based on who you are.

I will end with this.

Sit back and smile.
Not worth the fight.
So just remember that it's all alright.
Though it seems dark
On this cold black night.
The sun has set, lets bring it back to life.

Well, thanks for being a part of the forum as long as you have. Best of luck with the things you need to take care of in life and if you ever want to join back in here or there for a post, feel free to. You don't have to completely cut off the forum if you don't want but you don't need to feel you have to participate as much as you have in the past either if you have a busy schedule in life. This is supposed to be recreational and sometimes members leave but decide to pop in later in the future. It's up to you.

Best wishes Maxi.

I agree with you on a couple point. The hive mind in particular, but that seems to be getting better.

The bullying thing for Tendoboy was legitimate teasing for how shitty his threads were. It's just like me. I made some pretty bad topics in the past. I got teased for them, now I am Stogi, Lord of the Locked Threads. Some people may have went overboard but they were the minority by far. Teasing is a natural part of life. For instance, I call my cousin 'Stupid face' for absolutely no reason except I think it's funny and she finds it endearing.

All in all, it's been fun Maxi. Take care in your life and be safe. Like Khush said, you're welcome anytime.

Maxi,

It'll have been almost two years since I joined the website as a new user on the forums, and I remember you being the first to welcome me to the website.

I'm very sorry to see you go.  Even though I haven't noticed you commenting too often on the topics I was, you always had a respectful approach to those you were discussing things with, and that tone of civility and respect is sometimes lost when getting in heated discussions with some of the more passionate forum members.

I understand some of your concerns and reasons for leaving (forum members can be a bit cruel sometimes, maybe i've contributed on occasion regarding tendoboy), but I guess I've always viewed these forums as an eclectic group of opinions, so I don't necessarily agree with you on the hivemind claim (I've found a diverse set of opinions between myself and other members here, and for the most part don't think people here are more antagonistic than other, larger forums).

Regardless, while I understand your need to take a break, I hope you reconsider at some point.  Maybe I'll have to track you down online sometime to play online once the Wii U has a more robust option of online games.

I wish you nothing but the best of luck.

Agree on some points, disagree on some points. The forums need a lot of updates and changes and they aren't happening for I don't know what reason. Maybe like nobody has the initiative, or nobody is around to make those calls?

Sorry to see you go Maxi. You and ShyGuy were the two that jumped out at me when I first joined. I hate to see you go, but I guess **** happens. I agree with almost all points.

Enough with the hate. Don't like the "shitty" threads some people post? Report it if it breaks the rules, or ignore it if its not.

Mods need to get their **** together and do what needs to be done. Get new and better mods than we have now, thats for sure.

Oldies need to be more welcoming and less "prickly" with newer members. I'm sure the oldies want more people to join the site, but the way people act around here definitely isn't helping.

If you think a thread is against the rules, use the report button. I like to err on the side of letting the conversation go, but if people complain about it I'll step in and stop it. I don't believe in stopping every little thing that goes a bit across the line just because it's technically against the rules, but if people report it and make a good case I will step in.

I also think the complaints about negativity are outdated, as I've seen all kinds of positivity since the release of the Wii U. Yes, there is still some criticism, but I think most of it is reasonable and justified, and I think you're asking too much if you want everything to be positive all the time.

Yeah, I'm not going to get into this discussion, except to agree with Insanolord - don't complain about the lack of moderation if you're not using the "Report to Moderator" feature.  Period.

Went through the "Reported Posts" log.  Going three pages back brings be all the way to September 18th.  There's a bunch of SPAM posts reported (all of which were deleted).  There's someone who posted a personal introduction thread - it was moved from the Console Discussion forum to the Funhouse.  Probably should have been merged into the General Discussion "Introduce yourself here" thread.  But, Funhouse.  There's a message where one member specifically and directly calls another member a "douche" - post was deleted and the individual received a warning.  There's one where someone "attacked" someone else's real-life acquaintance - the person who's acquaintance was attacked didn't bother to report it and it wasn't really much of an insult, so no action was taken.  A new member reported a post from back in 2005 that was Funhouse-esque material they didn't understand (and was nothing but an individual screenshot pasted a bazillion times).  Another post was a new member who had inserted a really annoying, large image in his "signature".  Finally, and most recently, there was a member who made some really pissy posts attacking *me* - one was reported, but I'm a big boy and I can take it - AND I don't want to be seen as using my modly powers to smite those who say mean things about me, so no action was taken.  Though, as I've said before to a completely different poster, had those things been said about anyone else on this forum (and reported), I would have taken action, no questions asked.

So, there you have it.  Roughly three months, we've had 30 reported posts, 24 of which were SPAM, 3 of which action was taken, two where no action was taken and one which shouldn't have been reported in the first place.

Bullshit. We shouldn't have to report every post just because you can't do what you're supposed to and check comments and threads. THAT is what you're supposed to do. You aren't supposed to sit on your ass waiting for one of us to report something. Proactive, not reactive.

I agree, you shouldn't report "every post".  Just the ones you find to be offensive.  This is, at its heart, a community.  Have you ever looked up pornography laws?  Most of them are based on "community standards".  There's a reason for that.  But , more to your point...

A) That was not the terms under which I was brought on board..
B) I have a life outside this forum.  I don't read everythread, have no interest in the large majority of threads and wouldn't have the time to do so if I wanted to.  If you'd like to pay me a yearly salary in excess of what I make at my current job, let me know.  Contrary to your post, I don't just "sit here on my ass."  I work a full-time job (and it's salary, so I don't get to clock out at 40 hours) and have a family life.
C) Removing posts and members stifles conversation.  My moderation style, wherever I've been, has virtually always been to err on the side of free speech.  Censorship should ONLY be used in the most extreme of cases - which is why so many members - yourself included - have been given multiple chances (and to clear up a misconception you may have, I only issued two of your multiple warnings - one of which I rescended when you showed me that it was in error).  If we banned everyone who ever hurt someone's feelings, there'd be a lot more members gone than those who have left on their own.  Again, yourself included.

Nope, no bullying or negativity in that post. ^ No Sir!

Don't mean to sound negative (well, as un-negative as I can be when someone makes two different comments implying that I just sit around on my *** all day) or bully-ish - just honest.  There are about five members of this forum who *multiple* members - current and former - have reported and a regular basis.  These same five-ish members are pretty much the sum of the majority of non-SPAM moderator action.  We react when someone lodges a legitimate complaint against another member of this forum.  Could we be harsher?  Sure.  But those five-ish would have been long gone.  If we had a stricter GameFAQs-esque moderation system, for example, you wouldn't see them around.

Try telling a moderator on GameFAQs to "Shut the **** up" on open forum.  That would not be allowed

Is it bullying to point that out?  That what some folks are asking for would mean their own banishment from the forums?

I dunno.  Would some of you prefer a more GameFAQs-esque moderation system (which is additionally mostly made up of user reports)?  Automatic censorship of naughty words, threat of banishment for simple things like censor bypass, absolutly no talk of anything even remotely piracy related, and should you choose to appeal a moderation, it is very likely to be handled by the exact same individual who acted on you in the first place?

I mean, the forums support a censor - we could get that dusted off.  We could update the rules to reflect no piracy (which would include movies and TV shows, by the way).  I can stop signing my name to warnings and just let the anomymous moderation system handle it.

Seriously though, I had a feeling you had enough of this place. Didn't know why but with you being a Boo it wasn't too hard to figure out.

I'll tell you this though, not a major Nintendo multiplayer/party game release goes by where I don't think about the NSMBW NWR meetup we almost had. You seemed to be really looking forward to it, but I just had stuff going on around that time.

I've been thinking, when Smash comes out I'll put together a new meetup for it, for real this time. And of course your invited. Still I'd have to screen everyone first. Just keep that in mind while your gone.

And I know I picked on Tendoboy, but gosh darn it, his posts used to bug the shiatsu out of me.

The funny thing is - not counting vudu, who's never around, I'm like the only one here who "works" on the site and gets *nothing*.  This isn't a complaint, simply a statement of facts.

Staff members - who do deserve it - get some free games and swag (and Professor Layton hats).  Now, it's not enough to make one quit their day job, but it's *something*.

I do what I do for free because I do care about the forums.  I've met some great people here, had some great conversations, learned of some great games, etc.  And, for better or worse, I'm glad to have been a part of it.  For free.

With that said, my PayPal is in my signature.  Feel free to send me some money.  Nintendo stuff and Skylanders don't buy themselves.

Although, could you imagine if they did?  Man, Activision could make Skylanders that buy Skylanders that buy Skylanders... Skylandception.  They'd sell a bajilion.

UncleBob, you're a mod of a forum. You aren't supposed to get anything for it. You aren't the only mod in the world who has to deal with that. If you don't like the workload, you need more mods. You're the only active one, right?
