Luigi says: OOooh. Such a scary date to be playing at night! I'm-a just happy Radio Trivia went-a Okey-Dokey! Now where did I put-a that old Poltergust. . .

TYP says: It was a crazy night. Games meant to be hard got more points than those meant to be easy. Players witnessed a rare example of when second guesses actually matter with Kirby's Blockball. I went full out with my Wario impression a la the Wario World E3 booth while playing Wario Land 4 live with direct feed audio. Those not present missed two TYP Moments. And let's not forget how Planet Trivia was effectively canceled thanks to ISP woes on Windy's end! I suppose nothing less is to be expected on Friday the 13th!

TalkBack / Peter Moore Resigns
« on: January 18, 2003, 05:48:08 PM »
Nintendo isn’t the only company losing executives named Peter, or losing employees to Microsoft ...

Update: It appears that Peter Moore is now Vice President of Retail Sales and Marketing at Microsoft.  Congrats to Peter for hitting the ground running, and we hope that his new position finds him happy.

On Friday, Sega of America announced that its president and chief operating officer, Peter Moore, has left the company after four years of dedicated work.  Tetsu Kayama, the Japanese division’s chief executive officer, has assumed all of Moore’s responsibilities.  Sega would not elaborate on the circumstances of this sudden departure, although the report suggests Sega’s poor performance may have been involved.

"We thank Peter Moore for his four years of service at SEGA and wish him well in his future endeavors," Kayama said in a statement.

All of us at Planet GameCube second Mr. Kayama and wish Mr. Moore the best.

TalkBack / NOA Wind Waker Interview
« on: December 20, 2002, 11:24:18 PM »
In case you didn’t notice, Nintendo.com has released an interview concerning The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker...

Nintendo of America recently published an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma, Producer and Director of Link’s latest adventure, respectively.  While much of the information contained within is old, the two provide more thorough explanations and a few interesting tidbits.  Be warned, though: Miyamoto and Aonuma do reveal what some might consider minor spoilers!  Below is a brief excerpt from NOA’s Interview.

The wind plays a large role in this game. Where did the idea come from, and how is it used?

Mr. Aonuma:
This time we decided to set the stage out on an ocean. We began talking about how you would travel on an ocean. Obviously, the best option was a sailboat. So that's how we ended up with a game where the wind is blowing constantly through the land to let the player sail around.

Mr. Miyamoto: Actually, for a long time we've wanted to be able to use wind in games. We've had windy stages in the Super Mario games before, but really it wasn't until we were able to use the technology of the Nintendo GameCube and some of the visual styles possible with it that we were able to really show wind blowing in a videogame. So, that was one of the things we decided to challenge ourselves with, which made it a driving force behind The Wind Waker.

TalkBack / Career Advice for the Gaming Industry
« on: December 10, 2002, 02:56:37 PM »
Codemasters shares its wisdom with those eager to become part of the Video Game industry.

WANT TO WORK IN THE GAMES BUSINESS?

Codemasters Launches Career Advice Guides For Aspiring Programmers, Artists and QA Technicians

New York - December 10, 2002 -  For many gamers, the chance to work in the games business and shape the way future titles are created is a real career goal. Now Codemasters has launched a series of career guides, available online at http://www.codemasters.com/jobs/careers for those seeking advice on the background, education and skills needed to get a job in the gaming industry.

Aimed at helping people to take their first step towards a career in the video games industry, the guides are an ideal reference point for people still in school and deciding which courses to take.  The series focuses on attaining graphics, programming and quality assurance (QA) positions. Prepared by people working in those areas at Codemasters, the advice is both practical and inspirational.

The guides also detail different positions within each field; for graphic artists it discusses options from 2D and 3D artists and animators to more specialized roles such as concept artists, GUI (Graphical User Interface) artists and marketing artists.  For aspiring programmers, the guide details which programming languages are important, the software skills required and web links to further informative and practical resources.  For those with personal love for video gaming and already have an understanding of what actually makes a video game special, the QA Technician guide is a great starting point. QA Technicians test video games in production and have direct involvement with a game’s development team to ensure the finished game is perfect.

“The online career advice guides have been launched as a response to the thousands of emails and letters we receive from students seeking recommendation on which courses and qualifications are required to enter the games industry,” said Stephen Harrison-Mirfield, Codemasters’ Group Human Resources Manager.  “We have a great record of taking graduates and making them an essential part of game development teams. We hope the guides will help more people to get the best grounding in education and inspire them to further develop their interest in particular fields.”

Codemasters’ career advice guides are featured on the company’s web site at: http://www.codemasters.com/jobs/careers

Bust out the candles and grab your frying pans, 'cause it's that time of year again!

Thanksgiving isn’t the only reason to celebrate this week!  Tonight, marks the start of Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, togetherness, chocolate guilt (money), latkes (potato pancakes), and—of course—presents.  It may not be a religious holiday, but it is certainly one of the most enjoyable!

Businesses don’t close on Hanukkah, and that includes PGC, so don’t forget to click the refresh button between Driedel spins!  Aso, be sure to check out our Holiday Buying Guide, just in case you're still searching for that eighth present.

On behalf of the Planet GameCube staff, I wish all of our Jewish readers a very happy Hanukkah and hope another huge meal doesn’t leave any permanent damage!

TalkBack / Europe to Fine Nintendo?
    « on: October 25, 2002, 09:44:16 AM »
Nintendo may be punished for its questionable distribution practices in the past.

Reuters reports that the EU Commission plans to evaluate a statement filed in 2000 against Nintendo and seven distributing companies this upcoming Wednesday.  The companies have been attacked for limiting the flow of product across European boarders during the mid-90’s in an effort to maintain inflated wholesale prices.

"A formal decision has not yet been received from the European Commission. However, we are aware that a decision is imminent," a Nintendo spokesman in London said.

The severity of the proposed fine is still unknown, but since Nintendo changed its practices once questioned in 1995, the commission is not expected to give too harsh a punishment.

Another gamer loses his life to negligence at an internet café.

Members of the gaming community were shocked when reports of a 24-year-old male died after http://www.planetgamecube.com/news.cfm?action=item&id=3527”>86 hours of pure gameplay at a Korean internet café.  Now another member of the Taiwanese gaming community has fallen victim to a similar overdose after 32 hours straight.  Saturday morning in Fengyuan, a café employee found 27-year-old Lien Wen-cheng dead on the building’s bathroom floor, foaming at the mouth and bleeding from the nose.  It is believed the young man died from exhaustion.

According to psychologist Peter Watson, certain games induce a feeling of constant danger.  And when such mental stress is combined with prolonged exposure and sleeplessness it can wreak havoc on the body.  Hopefully two incidents in the same month will be enough to raise public awareness on overdosing and help prevent any more of these horrible deaths.

    TalkBack / Sega Still Struggles
    « on: October 23, 2002, 11:36:23 PM »
Sega hopes to become the #1 publisher in America, but it looks like America isn’t taking to the idea.

Sega left the console hardware market in hopes to reclaim the powerhouse title they once owned.  At this year’s E3, Sega boldly announced that it was looking to buy out other publishers and developers in order to become America’s #2 publisher in the short term and eventually blossom into first place, displacing the current powerhouse, Electronic Arts.  But things aren’t going according to Sega’s plan, and due to unexpectedly low sales of Sega’s key title the publisher’s stock is now at 13-month low.

"Disappointing sales of its key football game in the lucrative North American market have raised concerns about the fate of Sega's revival scenario as a game software publisher," said Takeshi Tajima, an analyst at BNP Paribas.

How disappointing?  Sega had estimated NFL 2K3 to sell around 1.5 million copies within the current time frame, but has only managed to sell 400,000 discs, no doubt in part to the remarkable success of Sega’s new arch-rival’s Madden NFL 2003.  In response to the poor sales, many analysts have reassessed the stock’s value to a less impressive rating.  Sega isn’t down for the count, but it looks like the company’s “platform agnostic” structure isn’t as bullet-proof as many had originally hoped.

The adapters are shipping to stores, and Nintendo’s here to help those in need!

Nintendo has opened its GC Online Customer Service page to help consumers get PSO (and future games) up and running.  With detailed information on how to configure the adapters, troubleshooting tips and information on the products themselves, all gamers are advised to look the site over before picking up the goods.

Worth noting is that some dial-up ISPs do not work with the Nintendo GameCube.  If you use AOL, Compuserve or a free ISP and want Online gaming goodness, you’d best think about changing service providers.  Also keep in mind that the Broadband adapter only supports Ethernet (RJ45) connections, so people using USB connections will need to make some changes.
