3DS eShop Not Available Anywhere Until May
« on: January 31, 2011, 12:21:43 PM »

The system's first update will make the shop a reality worldwide.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24984

The 3DS's eShop won't be available in any region until May when the first system update will be made available, according to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata in last week's investors meeting.

On that same date, the web browser will also be available for download, and players will be able to transfer their DSiWare purchases to the system. Both Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda: DX have been confirmed as some of the first titles available for purchase. 3DSWare will also be available, though there have been no announcements about 3DSWare titles.

Iwata also noted that the 3D Classics, which he called "Classic games with a new 3D look", will be part of the eShop service. These were first shown at last year's E3

A little disappointing, although I don't think I would need these features when the 3DS does come out.

Well, two months isn't that long of a wait. Also, this will give a person time to think what he/she wants to buy once the shop comes online!

3D Classics? Does that mean that they will have N64 games on it with 3D? Will we see the original Ocarina of Time in 3D too?

Maybe they should launch their products with all of the promised features intact?

No, "3D Classics" are NES games with added 3D effects. These were already revealed back at E3. The original OoT in 3D wouldn't make much sense since they're already remaking it in 3D.

Horrible. Well, it looks like I probably won't get a 3DS until May, at the earliest. I was counting on DSiWare and Virtual Console games to make up for the poor launch titles.

AFAIK, we don't know any North American launch titles. I will be getting a 3DS at launch anyways since I am interested in several of the early games.

This is a level of "NINTENDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" that I expect from them every time they launch a new system.

Sure would be nice if they didn't muck it up one of these days.

Sure, let me revise my statement: there are no "launch window" games, including anything shown at the recent 3DS events worldwide, that are compelling enough for me to purchase this system prior to the online shop's availability.

I wonder if they could release Virtual Boy games onto the service without much effort. The Virtual Boy technically had two screens to create its 3D, so I'm not sure if that could be converted to the 3DS screen easily.

It would probably require a significant effort to emulate the effect.

When they speak of the virtual boy now it's treated like it was a lark. They don't seem to have that much affection for the system.

I don't think it would require much effort at all. The frames were already rendered separately, so it should be pretty trivial. Emulating the CPU would require more effort, and they may not be willing to put that in for so few games.

Between a few purchases and my Gamefly subscription, I'll have plenty of games to play before May.  But I guess whoever I'm going to pass my DSi onto is going to have to wait a bit.  I have a handful of DSiware games I'm going to want to transfer first.

The effect isn't created the same way though, and with the slider it could be an issue.

Not really.  Worst case, it would work the same way 3D movies work on 3DS.  3D on or off only.

Yes. I checked to see which ones and there were 7 NES games, 2 SNES, 1 N64, and 2 Genesis games on launch day (in North America). 2 TG16 games were added 2 days later.

This is very disappointing, and there doesn't seem to be any good reason for it. I'm still planning to buy the system at launch, though.
