TalkBack / RE:EDITORIALS: Nintendo Shows Up At PAX
« on: August 28, 2006, 09:22:52 PM »
I dont post much anymore, but I did attend PAX and i think this is extremely valid. I also went to e3 and it seemed like everything at PAX was just leftovers : / I actually did not enjoy PAX at all. It was very refreshing to see about 70-80% of the attendees with DS' but as far as the actual event goes, there were just too many people and waits for nearly everything. Even the Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament was frustrating (delays delays, overcrowded, people changing settings before matches).

Last year at PAX they at least had Twilight Princess at the show and it was pretty awesome! It's not very hard for Nintendo to pack up their showcased Wiis (or modified GameCube hardware, whatever it was at E3 06) but for some reason, the 20 minute travel just seems too hard for them I guess.

Sad times, without the biggest thing in the game industry to be absent. Sad times.

I have tried to get along with saying, but when talking to customers about it, I keep referring back to revolution. This is really going to be a strange turnout, and yes, there will be people who will not buy it because of the name. These are the same people who didnt buy GameCube's because they came in Purple initially and the same people who stereotype people according to their names. Ouch.

Hmm, I must say that I don´t think it´s a huge problem for Nintendo that IGN gives StarFox a hard time. Not on second thought. I think we haven´t seen the last of IGN´s bad scores for Nintendo games. Next one up to score badly may be the next Metroid game which they may not like for some reason. But that is no problem. Nintendo wont be affected by that website and it´s anti-Nintendo tunes.

I've heard a lot of "IGN this" and "IGN that" on these forums - what gives?  If you are going to complain about something from their site, certainly it couldn't be Starfox - judging by EGM and Gamespot's scores (both 7.3), I don't think that they gave it an unfair review.

From what I've heard from you guys, this is a total rent game.  Having played the first two Starfox's thoroughly, my expectations are naturally going to be very high for the game, no matter what I may do to dissuade them.

And what's the big deal with Matt at IGN liking the PSP?  I'd much rather hear true opinions from a guy in his position than mindless Nintendo-loving banter.  If he doesn't like the DS, he doesn't like the DS, who cares?  Let him dislike it - I think he's given some very reasonable reasons for doing so.

Very well said. Starting with Star Fox, my expectations were VERY high. I loved the original and thought the Nintendo 64 was a great followup. Star Fox Adventures can't be put down because it's a game of a completely different catagory. In conclusion, I wasn't happy that Nintendo handed off one of my favorite franchises to Namco. I'll just leave it at that.

Regarding the Nintendo DS and IGN, I also could not agree more. Why do so many people expect someone to completely praise the DS for it's replay value, when at this moment, it has virtually none.

I always wanted to try it because I thought it might be something like Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, a very good game that was shot down by reviews.

I can't agree more. The Nintendo DS really needs some customer reassurance. I don't mean to sound like just about everybody out there, but the PSP has a very strong launch with many games to follow. 3 months after it's launch, the Nintendo DS is still struggling to provide it's userbase with games and innovation. That's a big problem. Whether the PSP and DS will actually compete with each other years from now doesn't matter because to the market, it seems like they will be in direct competition. If one system looks much more appealing in every aspect to the mainstream market, it won't matter if one is priced 100 dollars over. The thing that worries me even more is that as we get closer to PSP's launch, hardly anything newsworthy is happening to the DS. I don't understand the logic at all. What good will a pricedrop and multiple colors do if hardly any games are available.

Anyway, on the subject of Geist, I am looking forward to it. I believe that there are new screenshots of it in Game Informer.

It's always amazing at how easy Nintendo can impress us, but how rarely they really try to do it. I've been trying to buy a F-Zero Arcade cabinet for months, with no luck as Nintendo barely made any of them. Perhaps I may become lucky with this one.

Well, we all know this isn't bad. I hear people saying that this is horrible because Nintendo won't make other colors and they are giving celeb and pepsi special offers. That's not really a big deal, as long as Pepsi DS' aren't available at retail. I personally think that DS looks like garbage, but it will start some talk in Japan for sure.

Yes, they already have in America. It was about 2-3 months ago and you could win Sony products. A PSP was actually in the lineup too.

I also saw Coca-Cola and Nintendo more related, but eh, now that I truely know the companies of Coca-Cola and Pepsi Co, I despise them both.

Lame. Lame. LAME! I hate renting, and I want to pick this up. This is seriously retarded. What ever happened to Nintendo hating Blockbuster (lawsuit) for copying their manuals? Hmmm. I suppose that was 20 years ago, but still.

PSP. It looks awesome I must say. If you want to get a good feeling of what the big screen feels like, let me put it this way:

It's like having a widescreen tv in your home but nothing to watch on it. Everything on it right now is utterly boring or I feel like I've played before.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Is Nintendo DS really inferior to the SONY PSP?
« on: January 19, 2005, 04:34:35 PM »
PSP and DS will compete together, and good bets aim that it will be close competition. For this, each will offer something the other cannot. If the PSP gets a Grand Theft Auto game for example, a lot of people will flock over to it. If the DS gets a new Mario side scroller game and promotes it well, it will sell well, and since everybody seems obsessed with old school mario, I'm sure it will do well. Of course there are hundreds of other contributing things that would help each other prevail.

My favorite thing about the DS, prior to it's launch and still to this day is that it seems like Nintendo is aiming for a new market. Take the Japan launch for directly, the advertisements were mostly aimed torward female and their launch lineup had many titles that drew to that particular audience. Of course Nintendo still aimed for their regular market, but nonetheless I think this was very bold and challenging of Nintendo and hopefully it will show it's result in the long run. Come the ides of March, or possibly longer (perhaps e3) we'll have a much better deal of how this entire situation is going to turn out.

In my opinion (you could prove me wrong though) Nintendo is playing their cards well at this point. If you noticed, most of the hype from the DS disapeared after launch, it has become a silent thing. For Nintendo, they have covered the hardcore market with their initial offering, now they can revert back to GameBoy Advance sales (push out those top GBA tiltes as well) until the PSP comes out, which in that case they will hype the DS up again. Perhaps we'll even get a price drop?

Speaking of the GameBoy Advance, a lot of people aren't willing to fork over the money for either, but if there is a handheld on the market that is less that 80 dollars (which in this case happens to be the GameBoy Advance), that will not only secure another route for Nintendo, but when the time comes for those specific users to buy a new handheld, the DS' playback to the GBA will be a large convincing point.

Quoted: When PSP is released, I hope people realize that whatever PSP can do, DS can do more. That's why I choose it over PSP. PSP games could easily be ported to DS, but DS games could never be ported to PSP.

Exactly what I was saying! ^_^

I can't tell you how overwhelmingly awesome it is to go on a busride and play a FPS intuitively (meaning like a keyboard and mouse) against other people who happen to be seated at different areas. The PSP may have wireless gameplay as well, but once the WESTERN market finds out that FPS games on the DS work really well, the PSP might get squashed by both markets. Only speculation though. Some games will obviously work much better on the PSP, meaning what the PSP can do, the DS can do as well (maybe not as good). However, the big thing is, a lot of the future stuff that the DS can do, the PSP will not be able to. And it's not wise to make the assumption that I'm talking about Graphics or Audio...........

TalkBack / RE:EA Ends Relationship with SEE Advertising
« on: January 17, 2005, 07:14:48 PM »
It's becoming more and more evident that Electronic Arts are going to be a big factor in bastardizing the future of electronic video games. If you thought it was bad now, just think about next generation. At least EA is being somewhat fair and unbiased in the console race. While their development staff may lean torward one particular console, if they were to pull their lineup from a specific console (say GameCube in this case, well being it's low 3rd party sales), it would kill the console. That's very dangerous.

Okay, so that was completely irrelevant. I find it funny that EA is doing press announcements of their advertising.

Boasting their support is completely acceptable in my opinion, I've had nothing but good support from them, whether it be my old GameCube which couldn't read disks anymore and was past warranty but still got repaired (actually, they sent me a new GameCube) or my GameBoy Advance SP which my friend dropped. I've had excellent support and have not had to pay a dime to get anything repaired from them, infact they say that I should expect my product returned in at least 2 days, or something like that, but I actually got it back in a day.

Where as Microsoft, my warranty is expired a month and my Xbox which I hardly use cannot read games, they tell me it will be an 80 dollar fee + shipping.

What can I say?  I hate EA and their attempts to take over the industry reminds me of when Hitler was slowly invading other countries and no one did anything until they absolutely had to.  These guys are killing our industry yet few seem to notice and probably won't until EA owns a stake in every significant American dev.  Fans of Command & Conquer and Sim City know it.  Fans of NFL2K now know it.  Soon Burnout and Timesplitters fans will know it but with everyone else it's like they won't notice until one of their favourite games gets destroyed.

Though I'm not really a Ubisoft fan anyway.  Most overhyped publisher this gen.  PoP: The Sands of Time is merely a good game, not GOTY particularly in a year where WIND WAKER was released.  Splinter Cell is a glorified Dragon's Lair.  Beyond Good & Evil is at best an average game.  There's nothing even remotely exceptional about it at all.  Of course my opinion of that game may be biased since I'm playing it at the same time as Metroid Prime 2.  Still as much as a don't care for Ubisoft they're miles ahead of EA.  Or they were I guess.

Well said.

Ian: "EA is the console equivalent of MS. Their success is ruining the industry."

I completely agree. I cannot believe EA. They fire more than half of Westwood staff (Command and Conquer team), treat their employees like dirt and now they do this. If this madness does not stop, we will be seeing a EA console soon.
