"Permenently is good". Tell that to all the people who bought it specifically as an investment. When it's announced to be a limited engagement, it needs to stay that way.

Does Panel de Pon have English menus so it's actually playable, or is it another Super Puyo Puyo 2? I hate the fact that SPP2 is in the Western versions of SNES app. The only previously Japan-exclusive games the NES app has are ones that were always in full English. It would be wise if they stuck to that tradition for the SNES app as well. There's nothing stopping anyone who wants to play Japanese games from downloading the Japanese app.

Two years ago today Hulu was released on Switch. One year ago today YouTube was released. Following that pattern, I have to presume Nintendo instituted policy of only allowing one new streaming app a year in an attempt to keep the system gaming based and not flooded with media apps, which is why we still don't have Netflix or Prime Video on the system. So, today's the day we SHOULD be getting the next one, yet unlike last year where there were rumors leading up in the days before, this year I've heard nothing... Which seems weird since I'd think others would have noticed the pattern and there'd at least being speculation floating around. Have I just missed something?

>Unlike the NES-themed Joy-Con controllers for the Switch, this proposed SNES controller would charge via a USB cable.

Makes sense.  If you have a Switch Lite, you have no way to charge the NES Controllers.

I suppose that's true... Ironically though, considering the button layout, D-pad inclusion, and lack of TV support, there's virtually no need to have an SNES one if you're using it for a Lite. I'd assume the vast majority of purchasers would be owners of the standard Switch. If their intent is to accomodate Lite users, they should probably just revise the NES version as the simplified button layout is actually enough of a difference to warrant a purchase for a lot more people.

Was the ability to dock really worth taking out? I get it if the thing won't fit in the regular one, but surely it'd work with some 3rd party solutions.

You're assuming Nintendo's idea of 'handheld only', literally means it won't be capable of TV output. Remember, they also claimed the 3DS didn't support SDHC cards and the NES Joy-Cons were only for use with Nintendo Online's NES titles. I have a very strong suspicion the Lite will indeed be capable of outputing with 3rd party connectors, but only time will tell for sure.

Well, the reveal video stated plainly that the Switch Lite "Won't connect to a TV".  Now, I don't know if they've physically removed the capability or not, but they didn't say something like "No dock support" or leave it at "Handheld only".  But the "out of the box" could be implied I suppose.  You're right that we'll just have to wait see; I'm just not betting on it.

Judging from past instances of what Nintendo claimed their products could and couldn't do, and by my understanding of how the hardware works (it shouldn't be something that can simply be left out, I believe they'd have to go out of their way to specifically block it), I'd say chances are very reasonable the capability will be there. I have a strong feeling that if I'm right, the built-in controls won't work when outputing-- meaning, you'll need separate Joy-Cons, which is why they'd rather not promote that feature.

I've since visited the site and viewed the full size image of the black one puctured with the clear shell, it also has the same 3D-shaped + button, so we can safely assume it's fake too.

The one shown in most of the images is a mockup that's been floating around for at least a year. But even if this was the first I was seeing it, I could still tell you it was fake by the fact it has both a D-Pad and a + button of the same shape which would cause too much confusion. The it's a pretty safe bet the + button on the real thing will be a circle with a "+" printed on it, like on the Pro Controller.
I've never seen the one featured in the image with the shell, so there's a chance it could be legitimate, but I remain skeptical.

If it's indeed possible to recreate past stages from scratch, then their excuse doesn't hold water.

TalkBack / Re: Genesis Mini Console Launching September 19

I remember when NWR used to only report on Nintendo-related news...

11
I hope I'm wrong, but I can't help but be a bit pessimistic about how this turns out. It appears so far to be a direct recreation of the original for the most part, and if that proves true, then the graphic style seems lazy. I'd be perfectly satisfied with the style if it were for 3DS but this their current gen home console. If this truly is more or less the same 25 year old game, and they're not going all in on an artistic visual overhaul then I really hope this is released at a budget price.

12
The game looks amazing, it's like miniature toys come to life.  It'll also be nice to be able to play Link Awakening with more then 2 buttons so it'll greatly reduce the amount of times I need to pause to switch items.

I'm interested in what kind of new content they'll be adding.  I imagine they'll add a real final dungeon to the game instead of the maze at the end to help lengthen it.  I also wouldn't be surprised if they remake all the boss fights since the ones in the original are all pretty simple and basic because of GB limitations which the Switch wont have.

I wouldn't get too excited for a lot of changes as all the footage so far indicates a direct port.

13
That artstyle looks absolutely incredible and anyone who doesn't think it fits Link's Awakening is an ignoramus.

Wow, what an articulate stance.  You can usually tell you're on the right side, when the other side has to resort to name calling.

14
The cutscene looks great, was getting me pumped, and then it switches to this super deformed midget style that I don't dig at all.  The contrast between the cut scene and the gameplay is so bizarre.  Why offer another graphics style in the game to provide a comparison?  All I'm going to think is "why can't this game look like the cutscene?"  Link's Awakening is my favourite game but I'll stick with the GBC DX version.  I'm a hard sell for converting sprites to polygons to begin with so you have to really knock we dead with the new visuals.  This has too much of that NSMB plastic look that I can't stand.

You totally nailed it. I picked up almost immediately that it was Link's Awakening, and was totally psyched by that initial cut scene that led me to believe it was using anime-style cel-shading. I was then immediately crushed my the actual game footage. I wouldn't mind at all if Nintendo pushed this game back another year to rework the style. If they don't, I'll probably end up passing on this one.

"She"? ???

Yeah. Gender confirmed by Palutena's Guidance.

EDIT: Just realized the "she" probably doesn't refer to the Piranha Plant.  I know it's somewhere though.
Yeah, I figured that's where you got that idea. But "she" was definitely Viridi. It's pretty safe to say Piranha Plant is an "it".

I found this to be an odd character too, but was thrilled by seeing the moveset in the trailer. They sure went all out on making a unique fighter! If they choose other odd-end characters, I hope they all have the level of wackiness as Piranha Plant (who I don’t feel is alone already. Game and awatch, Ice Climbers, Duck Hunt, and Wii Fit Trainer all remind me of this!).

Aside from the uncoventional name, should Duck Hunt really have been a surprise? Unlike the others, people had been asking for the dog for years. In fact, it's still mind boggling to me that Ice Climbers made it in first.

I'm glad the X-men are there.

I'm only seeing Wolverine. Are there any others?

That would make the most sense, but Nintendo is notorious for locking random stuff for no good reason (ambassador titles, Four Swords Anniversary Edition). Smash is big enough that I'm confident it will be purchasable down the road.

Just because a company may have a reputation for something, doesn't mean it's at all based on facts. Four Swords Anniversary Edition was only FREE for a limited time. It was actually made available for purchase after that. The reality is Ninty has a more actual history of giving in (First wave of SSB amiibo, Wii edition of Super Mario All-Stars, Xenoblade Chronicles in the U.S., NES Classic... they even eventually made the Wii web browser free to everyone and gave those who paid a free NES game). The only legitimate case I can think of them truly keeping something limited despite demand was the Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii (even the GBA ambassador games had some legitimacy when you factor in the technical issues preventing sleepmode, and they still made them available later on Wii U).

I hardly consider that fair--Mewtwo wasn't preorder exclusive and could still be bought separately.
I was under the impression that Piranha Plant is free as a pre-order bonus and paid later, like Mewtwo.
Read the article--that's certainly not how the info is worded. Everything so I've seen so far only seems to indicate its availability only as a time-limited bonus. Unless you have data suggesting otherwise, I'm going to have to assume your impression probably came from wishful thinking.

21
To be fair, Nintendo did this with Mewtwo for Wii U/3DS.

I think Piranha Plant is a better bonus since it’s a completely unique character.

I hardly consider that fair--Mewtwo wasn't preorder exclusive and could still be bought separately.

I actually had this idea in my head for a while (I think it even predated that gag ending in StarFox Command). The title I would have used though would have been: "CarFox".

How hard did you try if you weren't able to find an SNES Classic? They've been consistently stocked at my local Walmart so you can definitely still get one if you actually want it.
