Title: RetroActive #24 Poll (Kirby Theme)
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on September 01, 2012, 01:46:26 PM
Note: All of these games are available on multiple platforms, and some will be on the upcoming 20th Anniversary Collection, so we hope many people will be able to participate.

As far as I can remember most of the Kirby games are pretty short. Hopefully this should mean there should be a pretty quick turnaround with this short of running into Wario Land 4 level of delays.

Yeah, I'm going to pass on even just voting for this one.

Ha. I assume this idea was conceived by Guillaume after his Starfy diatribe on episode 302 in an effort to get Jonny to appreciate Kirby level design.

The only Kirby game I've ever paid for is Kirby's Epic Yarn, which is unconventional as Kirby games go (and not on the poll anyway.) I have always heard that Kirby's Adventure is meant to be the crown of the series, but Kirby's Amazing Mirror is still sitting unplayed on my 3DS from the Ambassador initiative, so I'll put my vote in for that one.

Amazing mirror is my vote. Those metroid elements fit well with kirby despite the tacky four kirby gimmick

Also are we supposed to see how the poll is turning out so far because i see nothing on my phone (first time voting so)

The Retroactive polls are hidden from general view till there finished so we don't get the bandwagon effect.

The Kirby theme was actually my idea. Some people have a perception that I don't like Kirby, which isn't true. I own and have played all of the nominees except Dreamland 3, and I'm curious to try that one as well. I really wanted to include Kirby Air Ride, but apparently it's quite hard to find these days. Really wish Nintendo had put it on the Collection.

Oh man I would have LOVED for you guys to talk about Air Ride.  Maybe I'll send in a listener mail about it.  Voted for Kirby 64 by the way!

Voted for 64. Played it for the first time last year and was pleasantly surprised. Combining abilities is a fantastic concept, it really keeps the game from getting stale.

Lazy, portable inclined me. I voted for Amazing Mirror because.... I've got it.
But it'd be the 3rd Ambassador game this year to get the Retro Active treatment, so perhaps it's best if it doesn't win.

The only Kirby I've played is Magic Paint Brush / Canvas Curse on DS. Really liked it but never finished it. And I call myself a Nintendo fan!

I don't really like Kirby games.  But I have Amazing Mirror so if that game wins I'll play along.

I voted for the game that will not win--Dream Course. Lots of fun, and learning its mechanics is very rewarding.

Dream Land 3 and Crystal Shards are a little too slow-paced for my tastes. I'd favor CS though since I 100%'d DL3 but haven't finished CS.

Dream Course would be awesome to play but unfortunately, no, it won't win.

Amazing Mirror I haven't touched yet.

I voted for Dream Course because I think it exemplifies why Kirby is so great. I think it may also be the longest Kirby game, and is easily the hardest Kirby game. If you can find a friend to play it with the game gets even better.

I started playing Amazing Mirror, and thought it was better than most of the negative comments people had been dropping. But another game interrupted my playthrough and I haven't gone back. If it wins, that would be a good excuse to start up again... not sure that it'll get a strong reception if chosen though.

Shame there is no multiplayer available with the ambassador version, as that seems like one of the key selling points and would be a good discussion point (how it affects the game, how it compares to the relatively recent 4-player platform revival).

Also to clarify, Nightmare in Dreamland (GBA) is a remake of the NES game.

I'd laugh if everyone voted for Dream Course because it "wouldn't win" and it ends up winning.

When I reviewed Amazing Mirror years ago, I found it to be one of my favorite Kirby games despite playing little or no multiplayer. It's cool that they tried that, but it's not necessary to enjoy the game.

As it is with most citizens in a true democracy, I am largely indifferent to the results and my vote is thus amenable to...persuasion.

Bribe me!

The bribe would be to see the next retroactive vote not contain something from the Ambassador program and have a vote from somewhere else. From like you know, the retroactive nomination thread (https://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=27408.msg488001#msg488001).

I voted for it because it's my favourite Kirby game, lol. I enjoyed Adventure (NES) and Yarn (Wii) but by and large I'm not a huge fan of Kirby's mainline platformers. The series' diversions into other genres have been far more interesting and fun for me.

Kind of surprised to see Amazing Mirror win, when it's one of the less accessible games unless you are a 3DS Ambassador. Then again, on a Nintendo fan site there are probably a lot of Ambassadors voting, so maybe it's not that surprising they would pick a game they have easy access to. (That's why I voted Amazing Mirror.)

Looking forward to playing more of this game!

I voted for Crystal Shards.

My guess is that it was mostly people who have it as an Ambassador Game, which is why I also think Wario Land 4 won the last poll.

I voted Dream Land 3, as I've had that game sitting on my Wii VC for a couple of years now unplayed. I should probably start it soon. Hah.

This will be the last time we include an Ambassador game in the poll, at least for a long while. I don't necessarily think it's the reason Amazing Mirror won (it's arguably one of the most exotic and controversial Kirby platformers), but this makes three in a row, and I don't want non-Ambassadors to feel like they're being left out of RetroActive.

That's pretty fair. I'd at least let them rest until GBA games go up on the eShop.

While a lot of voters may have it as an ambassador game, the other copies are available elsewhere as well.  We technically paid for those suckers after the price drop just like anyone would've paid for copies of the game.  I'm glad I have it as an ambassador game and it won because I now feel less swindled and will be enticed to play those games through this venue.

I wonder if the voting would work better by skipping the poll and having everyone post their vote. I get the feeling that there are several people who vote in the poll who never post at all.

Depends on your viewpoint.

Is retroactive supposed to be a community activity? If so, then actively participating in the discussion makes for a more lively and enjoyable experience for most people. It also helps to liven up the podcast discussion in many cases.

Of course, you could argue that using the vote to direct podcast discussion is already interactive enough. Some people surely see it that way.

What ejamer said is about what my response was going to be. I see it more as a community activity so I feel people who vote for a game should participate if it's picked. But I guess they could also be voting for what they want to listen.

I can see that.

In my case, however, there have been several retroactives in which I have had nothing of any particular interest to add to the discussion. On some occasions I might also have something I wish to say but someone has already covered it satisfactorily. For that reason, I say make it as inclusive as possible. Having an open poll where anyone can vote allows people, not all of whom will necessarilly have sometihng to contribute to the discussion, still feel like they're involved.

Having more discussion though is always a good thing. On that we can agree.
