I saw a comparison that said this movie was The Lego Movie of videogames... I think that's pretty spot on comparison. Plenty to love in here for gamers as they reference all sorts of things from games. Entertaining pretty much the whole way through, and funny too.

I don't want to spoil anything, but some of the references towards the end were great.
Saw this in the theater, and even though there weren't many of us in there, you could hear the reactions. Definitely worth the watch, hopefully it does well at the box office as well.

The Suicide Squad

I liked the movie overall for what it was, which was trying to be its own thing.  It's been a while since I've seen the first film, so it's a little tough to compare.  A few differences stand out from its predecessor nonetheless, namely the tone.  The action is pretty good throughout, but there are some QT levels of blood splatter going on.  Most of the violence is actually pretty cartoonish.  The film itself is very chaotic.  There are all sorts of sudden deaths that I assume are meant to keep you on your toes.  Unfortunately, it's hard to get attached to any character because of this, and I'm not sure if any death is meant to feel significant.  There's a scene where the joke is more or less that only one person cared that this character died.

Most of my gripes with the movie involve spoilers, so I'm going to tag them here. Walker's team feels like a ragtag bunch of late-20s/early-30s IT grads.  It feels like she somehow got aggressively downgraded from the shady government organization she was running before.  However, she still runs this secretive government program with a guy in a hoodie working directly under her.  Maybe it's just me, but I expect my shadowy government agents to dress professionally.  The movie relies almost too much on misdirects.  The opening scene is misdirect as you see a bunch of characters gets brutally murdered only for the movie to reveal that those people were just there to serve as a distraction.  Later, Harley just up and shoots one of the movie's villains (a guy who did a coup and now runs the country and the Starro thing) in the middle of the movie which set up another guy being in charge, I guess.  And speaking of character deaths, Captain Boomerang is in this movie and dies in the very beginning.  Now, I knew he wasn't in the whole thing, but for a franchise that's still working to world build, killing one of your hero's 3 biggest villains seems like a bad move when the said hero has yet to have his own movie.

Other things, John Cena is very much in this movie.  He almost steals the show, but it might depend on how much you can take his almost pointless swearing.  It felt like there was a lot of cursing just to earn that R rating.  King Shark is an absolute delight is my last point about the movie.

8/10

Towards the end the movie goes maximum disney and just lands it.

I've never seen Lil Rel Howery in anything else before, but at first he gives off "short and loud Kevin Hart" until the scene when he refuses to put the glasses on and starts to prove himself very quickly then. Also, this is the first time ive seen a bromance done as sincerely as Legends of Tomorrow with Nate and Ray.

Absolutely on both points. That (Climax Spoilers - don't look)cameo at the end, when he used the Shield, and then the HULK arm (might've even triggered that Avengers theme song for a split second) the audience got all excited. Ryan Reynolds definitely was leaning into his MCU connections for that. (/Climax Spoilers)

As for Lil Rey Howery, he was that security guard friend from Get Out (and I know you've seen that....), but I bet you've seen him in something else as well. Here's his IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2577076/

F9 - woof
Fast & the Furious 9 for those not aware...

This franchise just jumped the shark. No wonder The Rock opted out of anymore sequels. This **** was ridiculous in a bad way, and so bad it was slightly entertaining when it wasn't just bad.

I knew from the trailers it was gonna be stupid and fun, but really it was mostly just stupid. We had more fun clowning how this and that was dumb or didn't make sense, more so than just being blown away by how crazy and exciting things were (definitely crazy, not all that exciting). They really need to stop trying to one up the craziness of car stunts from the last movie, and just focus on making a fun movie... But honestly, I think they've taken it too far to tone it back down now, and that's a serious problem.
You can only suspend disbelief so much.
Oh and most of Tyrese and Luda's lines and banter are terrible.

Unfortunately, there will likely be another sequel or 2 before they lay this series to rest, but I'm gonna save you time and money here.
DO. NOT. SPEND. MONEY. ON. THIS. MOVIE.

If you must watch it, you can wait till it's available on the streaming service of you're choice for no extra charge, and thank me later.

edit: I just realized that this movie came out around 2 months ago....
My friend decided to "rent" or "buy" it when I came over yesterday, and he now regrets spending the money on it. I don't know what it cost, but this was already on my "i'll see it when it pops up on Netflix" list.

p.s. also found out that that they only plan on going to F11 before no more core sequels... maybe only spin-offs from there.

I too loved Free Guy. You definitely get more out of it if you know how the gaming industry works, but there were great nods and easter eggs all the way through, and yes that climax was wonderful BnM, yes the Avengers theme did play when the shield appeared, as did the Star Wars theme when the lightsabre appeared. A shame it was Fallen Order lightsabre and not a real one because dude didn't seem to care at all.

Realistically though I think it's Ryan's best work. Enjoyed it far more than both the Deadpool movies. But it's more Ryan Reynolds. If you like Ryan you'll have a fun time with this even if you know nothing about video games.

Looking forward to a home release so I can see it with subtitles.

-----

I have only ever watched one Fast and Furious movie. That was the fourth one. And on that cursed day I swore a vow to the universe that I would never watch this franchise ever again. I just hated it. I mean, I don't expect exact realism when you're going for a dumb movie like this, but at the same time I expect the directors and producers to at least have the slightest idea how a car works, and the physics therein. Nope, not for me.

-----

I have zero interest in The Suicide Squad. I 'm just not a fan of James Gunn's style. I did like the first GotG because it came out of nowhere, but the shtick didn't work twice in my opinion. I have never watched GotG2 since the first viewing and I quite likely never will. Suicide Squad trailers just looked like it was just another GotG with different characters but with more blood and swearing. Pass.

Malignant (in theaters... but watch on HBO Max)

What a TERRIBLE, yet at times, fun movie.

The opening scene seemed like a Lifetime Channel horror movie w/ a bit of an effects budget.
The acting was just atrocious, and the way it ended... I was seriously hoping that it was someone in the movie watching a bad horror movie... but nope, that was the intro to the movie.
And then long tv movie like intro credits.... it was almost too much to look past.

If I had watched this in the theater, I would've tried to get my money back at this point.

Afterwards, it becomes "decent" for a moment, but still strong "Lifetime Channel" vibes being given off.

But once you get into the good stuff.... it's fucking ridiculous, but damn was it kinda crazy. The scenes starting with The Cop in the apartment confronting the killer all the way through the police station was a fun ride. It was insanely ridiculous, violent and gory. But DIVES back into Lifetime Channel/Hallmark Channel levels of cringe once they get in hospital at the end.

Overall, this movie is bad. But if you can sit through it, you'll definitely enjoy parts of it.

007 No Time To Die: A decent send off to Daniel Craig, but that ending drew a lot of questions M says this will cause an international incident, and possibly a war, with a British ship firing missiles in an island in an area disputed between the Russians and Japanese, but they fire away and the movie completely skips over any potential fallout of that to give Bond a eulogy.

The movie also had too many secondary characters to service in this plot. Paloma only appears for one scene and and is never mentioned again - you could have cut her out entirely and have a no-name extra silently deliver the suit and Bond does everything himself, and the movie would carry on as normal.

Nomi was off-screen for bits doing things that we dont see or hear about, and for most of the final act M, Q and Moneypenny are all in one room together talking at a screen

I was really expecting a David Tennant's 10 Doctor style "i dont wanna go" but that didnt happen either. His final line was "i know". Underwhelming exit.

To wrap up his era this was completely fine, but this was no Skyfall either.

Also, it's hilarious that Judi Dench has been in more 007 movies than than any other lead. This franchise ultimately belongs to her, and i hope she comes back a third time.

Here's a round up of a bunch of movies I've seen in the last few months (may be missing a few):

Fear Street Trilogy: 1994, 1978, and 1666
Only 1994 is any good (1978 is okay and 1666 is aggressively bad).

I'm conflicted on a few things. The main character, Deena, is a gay, teenage person of color. No issues there. None of those things are plot significant which is an odd choice but fine. However, I felt the director, Leigh Janiak, was intentionally coy about Deena's sexual orientation in the beginning for like no reason whatsoever. Sure, it kind of connects with Sarah Fier but also didn't need to narratively or thematically (Janiak sure did try then never quite got there). The actress who portrayed Deena (Kiana Madeira) is neither gay nor a teenager (she's literally 28). Maybe I'm just way too cynical in my old age, but to me, it seemed like the creators of this trilogy wanted the social "woke" points for having the courage to have a gay, teenage person of color as the lead except without doing any of the work. I really didn't like that; it felt exploitative like how corporations put all that Pride Month stuff out in June but you know they don't care during the other 11 months.

Reusing actors from the 1994 and 1978 installments in the 1666 segment was really unnecessary to me. The big villain reveal was also thoroughly unearned. Each installment got progressively worse so by the time the last one was wrapping, I didn't really care anymore.

BlacKkKlansman
Excellent, and I'm not normally a fan of Spike Lee joints. Not sure why Lee set the movie in 1972 when the investigation took place in 1978. I normally don't mind movies eschewing historical accuracy (unless it's egregious); this was odd choice.

Lady Bird
I doubt this is a movie anyone here is interested in. It starts off pretty slow. I started, put down, and picked up this movie on a least five separate occasions. If you're into performances, Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf are both excellent.

The Suicide Squad
It's good. The Suicide Squad is probably my favorite DC movie. You don't need to see Suicide Squad to understand what's going on here though James Gunn weirdly expects you to know some of the relationships from that movie like Rick Flag and Harley Quinn are kind of friends. It's been a while since I watched this so I can't give more detailed thoughts on it at the moment.

In another thread, I recall someone saying they don't really like Gunn's work. If you're reading this, yep, this movie is not for you.

The Girl Next Door
Woof, not good. They managed to throw in more teen comedy tropes into this movie than I thought was possible during its fairly short run time. I'm almost appalled that Timothy Olyphant was convinced to be in this.

Casino Royale
Still holds up. Skyfall is still the best Daniel Craig-led Bond movie, but Casino Royale works as a reboot, reintroduction of the character, and a movie in general. The ending is a little bit hard to follow. And Bond being so hung up on Vesper Lind is quite possibly the least believable part about this movie. He knew her for like three days.

Quantum of Solace
This is the first time I watched this since it came out. I remember not liking this movie, but it's actually not bad IF you watch it directly after Casino Royale as Quantum of Solace takes place immediately following the events of that movie. The antagonist, Dominic Greene, is both kind of weak as a Bond villain in that there's nothing especially noteworthy or remarkable about him EXCEPT that his plan is weirdly the most realistic out of any Bond villain I've seen. He wants to privatize water for an entire region which is IRL evil, but like not Bond-villain evil. Greene is essentially the CEO of Nestlé.

Mystic River
Man, this is one of the most depressing movies I've ever seen. I saw it when it first came out on video, and I couldn't bring myself to watch it again until recently.

Anyway, it's good. All-round great performances. I still think Bill Murray was better in Lost in Translation than Sean Penn was here. This is one of a few performances by Marcia Gay Harden where she really makes you hate her which I think is the point so good on her. She's doing her job well.

There's tons of misdirection in this movie which shouldn't surprise anyone because the book was written by Dennis Lehane (Gone Baby Gone) whose writing is filled with that. The only thing I really don't like about this movie is a scene right before the end between Penn's Jimmy Markum and his wife, Annabeth, played by Laura Linney. It's hard to describe why I dislike it without summarizing the entire movie which I'm not going to do.

Jennifer's Body
This movie bombed in 2009, and the marketing had a lot to do with it. 20th Century Fox decided to market the movie to young men so the ads primarily focused on Megan Fox's hotness. Admittedly, this is exactly why I avoided this movie. I figured I didn't need to watch a bad horror movie for one hot actress. I also did not like Juno so the fact that Diablo Cody wrote this didn't help either.

Recently, I've seen some video essays defending the movie, and it was on Netflix so I gave it a go. It's alright. The marketing failed so tremendously in showing what Jennifer's Body actually is and is about. It's more of a horror-comedy/satire. There are some genuinely funny jokes in there. More importantly, the actual movie is like the exact opposite of its exploitative marketing. Megan Fox lost a bunch of weight and avoided sunlight to make herself less attractive. Karyn Kusama filmed Fox's scenes specifically to avoid sexualizing her. Every time you're about to see something, the camera cuts away. I have doubts the marketing department even watched the movie before sending out the TV ads and movie posters. The movie probably still would have bombed because I don't think we were ready for this movie in 2009. I may have watched it sooner though.

Gladiator
Still holds up. Some of the CGI is dated, but for a movie that came out in 2000, pretty good. It's a mess as far as historical accuracy. I feel like you have to just ignore that in order to enjoy the movie. Everyone speaks English and New Zealand-born Russell Crowe is repeatedly referred to as "The Spaniard".

Thought I'd try something a little different tonight and threw in a recently-acquired BluRay for Dreamworks' ill-fated Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, the film that flopped so badly at the box office that Dreamworks swore off 2D animation forever (just like Disney did with Treasure Planet around the same time). I'd never seen it, but had heard very good things about it.

Yeah, that was pretty fucking good, and gorgeously animated. Man, quality 2D animation is truly timeless and tragically underappreciated. In particular, I hope whoever animated Eris was well-paid because...yeah. Wow, that is incredibly fluid.

Link (since apparently YouTube embeds are back to not working again): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzxxuCJP6yU

It's nothing deep or complicated. It's just a fun adventure story, and I'm down with that. The BluRay transfer is incredible, too. Considering how...mediocre...the transfer for Prince of Egypt was, that was a pleasant surprise.

One of these days, I'll get to some other films from my Dreamworks backlog I recently acquired on BluRay, that being the 3 How to Train Your Dragon (of which I've seen one) and Kung Fu Panda movies (of which I've seen none).
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

Dune - A visually gorgeous movie. I dont understand how some was confused by this storyline as it was both relatively easy to follow and with a budget to match. Directly sets up a sequel too I dont know if this is directly in the book, but two warring mostly-white tribes fighting over a planet of mostly POC locals with a white chosen one isn't really comfortable - i wish they changed the casting to avoid this

The French Dispatch - I never know what to make of Wes Anderson movies but, for me, i think i cracked it. Don't *watch* his movies, but look at them. Everything down the music and actors movements are perfectly in sync in such a way that even if you dont pay attention to the plot there is things to soak in. I wouldnt call this a movie but rather choreographed art.

Spider-man No Way Home: 8/10 - one of the top movies in Spider-man history. It has issues,  but they're minor. The first act is hilarious. It slows down a bunch in the third act. It's one of those cases where the fight scenes are better in the beginning of the movie. Great all around.

Last movies I saw were in the past week.

On the 30th I watched Spider-Man: No way home and I loved it.  I knew about some of the typical spoilers like how the 3 Peter Parkers were in the movie.  From the OG trilogy and the Amazing movies.  But I was not really prepared for the ending of the movie and how it ended.  Such sacrifice by Tom Holland Peter.  Who would of thought this whole movie would not of happened if Tom Holland Peter actually called MIT before going to Dr. Strange so that Ned and MJ could get into MIT. Give himself and them a second chance without resorting to magic.   Also loved the end credits.  Yes credits so stick around till the very end.

2nd movie I watched on new years eve day and that was Matrix Resurrections and it was a really great movie.

Lots of mind bendy stuff in the first 45 minutes but then it settled into the main plot which was about connections with people and places.   There is an very important connection but it may not be who you might expect.

Vox did a really good spoiler review of the movie and it gets into the weeds of what the movie is all about.

I will leave it behind a spoiler tag as the link does have some spoilers about what the whole movie is about.

The Matrix Resurrections 6.5/10 - A lot of great ideas, but not put together in a way that keeps the film riveting. Another case of the trailer being better than the movie. The best I can describe this movie is chasing the dragon.

Candyman 5/10 I actually enjoyed the first 2 acts of this movie, but the third act happened at lightning speed and it made the movie terrible. This movie has some serious pacing issues. I feel like more should have been explored before it devolved.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 - Cringe distilled in a bottle, and not in a good way. Great effects though. 4/10

Does anybody think that an over 40 white Texas gas station manager is going to call anybody "Gentri-fuckers?"

I mean the idea behind the movie is sound, it takes a page from The Evictors 1979. It's just characters are so illogical. In the OG TCM all the characters act logically, but get fucked by circumstances unlike so many other slasher films filled with clichés.

There are artificial member berries in the film. Remember Sally? That's not the actress who played Sally. Sally doesn't do anything.

Everybody does infuriating nonsense. And a chain of it.

I did laugh when they said "your canceled" before they got chopped to pieces.

It's got a terrible story, but it is very technically well done. I feel sorry for Fede Alvarez because he is capable, but there was not enough oversight on the script. This has some good ideas, but is overloaded with bad ones.

Don't Look Up - 7.5/10

It's pretty funny, but pretty on the nose at times. I thought it would be a bit more light-hearted, but it is a movie about a comet getting ready to smash into the earth. The parody of certain characters is not at all subtle, but it's not direct either, which makes it work really well. The movie went in a few directions that I wasn't expecting, but the plot was still alright. This is where I'd say it was nothing earth-shattering, but spoilers.

With Don't look up I couldn't help but think of Majora's Mask.

I usually enjoy End of the World movies.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, These Final Hours, and Last Night(1998) are really good examples. There is something very eerie about everyone on earth knowing when they're going to die and just waiting.

speaking of which

Silent Night(2021) - 7/10 - A pretty solid one of these movies featuring the kid from Jojo Rabbit -also not an evil Santa movie.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World was a really good one that I enjoyed. It was an interesting perspective on what some people would be going through at a time like that.

I also saw Tinder Swindler.

I love a good scam. I think they're very interesting and fun to learn about (but not do). This was a good scam. You get a feel for how he operates as the story goes on. I know some people said the women are "gold diggers", but that's entirely too harsh. They are complete idiots though. One woman agrees to meet the guy at a hotel the night they match (not safe behavior) and another goes on a date and gives basically all of her personal information to the guy (poor internal controls).

This one kept me hooked, but the victims weren't fully sympathetic to me. Even though the scammer in question seemed to have just about everything thought out in order to, effectively, rob these women for tens of thousands of dollars, they made themselves very vulnerable.

Maybe I was raised different but I don't get how most of these scams pull people in if you exercise some basic common sense (obviously its not so common with how people fall for them).

I can smell pyramid schemes and MLM pitches a mile away, I was the one friend in my group not tricked by silly chain emails and viruses in the 90's/2000's. I'm also a glass-half-full person who tends to give the benefit of the doubt towards individuals yet I don't get tricked by any of these things. So I just am shocked with how these people are able to be conned out of tens of thousands of dollars.

One thing to remember is that with this guy, it wasn't large swaths of people being tricked all at once. Sure, it was far more than a few women, but compared to all women on Tinder, it's a small number. With that type of scam, you have to be careful with your marks. I'm sure he could tell from their profiles how to proceed, but each step is also a test. Getting the woman to come to him, getting them to spill personal details, then waiting on how they communicate afterward all tell him whether or not he can proceed. Basically, he's targeting women who have limited common sense, then he tears away at it. He establishes having enemies early on so that when it comes up later he can lean on that. He spends money in a Ponzi-like scheme so when he asks them for money they assume he's good for it because he's already spent so much on him.

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers

This movie is a spiritual successor to Who Framed Roger Rabit. Also, Roger Rabit is in the film at the very beginning to let you know this. It's actually kind of weird that this type of this hasn't been revisited (aside from Space Jam).

Anyway, the film is very self-aware. The titular characters frequently reference rebooting the show. People in the film have either never heard of the show or are huge fans. This is especially true of the main human character (a big fan).

The movie is overall very good! It's funny if you like that "cartoony" style of humor. It feels like modern writers writing old-fashioned comedy if that makes sense. Despite being actors in this universe, Chip and Dale getting involved in solving a mystery makes enough sense. The story progression is logical enough to keep you involved (unlike a certain other recent film that mixed animation and live-action that I can't recall the name of).

Your mileage may vary on the level of cringe with some of the jokes. It helps to like Andy Sanberg's style of humor as well as John Mulaney's. There's a certain comedic element that's in the movie a little too much, as if on purpose, but that's the worst thing about the movie to me.

I was really worried about this film but been hearing good things about it. Hope to check it out soon. I would have rather gotten a new cartoon series but this sounds pretty good as it is.
