The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Impressions
« on: April 13, 2011, 08:00:01 PM »

See orifices like never before!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/26040

Yesterday, Nintendo gave me the chance to check out the latest build of Ocarina of Time 3D. They showed off a few areas, the Deku Tree, Kokiri Forest, Hyrule Field, Hyrule Castle Town, The Temple of Time, and Jabu-Jabu's Belly.

Though the gameplay and music is the same, the graphics are much easier on the eyes. Honestly, the original Ocarina looks like a muddy mess compared to the new rendition. The new version has all new models, including signs on buildings that weren't there before. Hyrule Castle Town feels bustling. Ocarina is also known for its early use of facial expressions, and they are more detailed and striking on 3DS. Jabu-Jabu's internals appear much more organic, and the game overall is more saturated. Fog is still present, but greatly reduced.

Camera systems have improved since Ocarina was released, but unfortunately, it doesn't appear that much was changed, and it's easy to get turned in the wrong direction due to perspective shifts. The big exception is for first-person targeting. While players can still use the Circle Pad to aim, they can also move the entire 3DS around in space, letting the system's motion control provide a moving window into the land of Hyrule. This system enables players to react much more quickly and accurately than the Circle Pad. However, it can be hard to use the system while sitting down, and the movement puts stereoscopic alignment at risk.

The touch screen allows for easier weapon assignment, which can map to face buttons, as well as touch panels. The map and much of the HUD has been moved there as well, freeing up the top screen for more cinematic adventuring.

As revealed by the OFLC yesterday, the game is being co-developed by Grezzo. Apparently, Master Quest content will form a second quest for the game -- it is not initially accessible. There may be more additions, but they haven't been revealed yet. As the 3DS does not have rumble, we at least know that that feature will be missing. Otherwise, it's mostly the same game, but better.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D launches worldwide in June.

To make this the definitive version you may switch "Hey Listen" to three modes:  Mime, Normal, and Wife.

Wow Link's eyes are almost at Wind Waker level in that picture.
So how many weapons can you map to the touchscreen? It sounds like you're saying the button mapping and screen mapping aren't the same, but could you confirm that?

When you say Hyrule Castle feels bustling, do you mean that they've added voiceless people like in Twilight Princess?

Is the gyroscope the only "improvement" to the camera?

What of the HUD remains on the top screen? IMHO it would be better to have nothing on the top screen at all, even if that meant less weapons mapped out, or they were mapped out to the d-pad, which I find difficult to switch to quickly from the circle pad, because it's just not exactly in the right place for my hands.

Sorry for all the questions, but maybe you can tell I'm a little excited for this game  :cool; .

@Ceric: LMAO! Brilliant idea, especially since Navi would be the easiest way to replace the Stone of Agony.

I really hope they do Wind Waker next. Maybe they're going to surprise us and after you beat Master Quest, you unlock Majora's Mask.
Silly monkeys; give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down. How they survive so misguided is a mystery. Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an a eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.

Be an interesting progression but honestly I would like to see at the end of beating OoT that on the select screen you can make a new Master Quest save but you would beat OoT and they would have a cutscene and like that immediately ushers you into Majora's mask.   Sort of a you where the hero of this day now a new challenge has come.

Nintendo should have added Majora's Mask, I'm pretty sure they could have. But I guess we will have to wait for its own game. This is like the  Mario Advance series all over again...

Except for the Mario 3 one was really cool.

The Master Quest is an unlockable? Stupid.  I've played this game already, why do I need to play it AGAIN just for the opportunity to play it AGAIN AGAIN?  I want to play the master quest but I'll be tired of OoT by the time I get to it.

The ideal way to do the Master Quest would be to make it accessible by entering "ZELDA" as your name.  I'm sure all the old school fans would get a kick out of that.

But they don't do it that way of course.

This is like the  Mario Advance series all over again...

Except that they didn't upscale the graphics in Mario Advance.  They just ported it.

BTW, anyone else noticed that this is coming out exactly 1 week before RE Mercenaries, Cave Story 3D, and Devil Survivor 3D?  Man, the 3rd parties must be pissed.  These are all games that I HAD planned to buy at launch, but now....

Oh yeah, I know I have 2 sealed copies of that game.   1 is for trading.  But people who collect Amiibos?  They really have a problem!

I was thinking of getting Zelda if I had nothing else to buy, but if I only need to wait one week for Mercenaries, then forget Zelda.

I think they'll be ok because all those games service a different crowd that an OoT remake will. (I'm sorry but this is so far not like RE4 GCN to RE4 Wii where there was a vast improvement just by being on the new system.)  Actually I'm probably going to personally be inclined to buy Cave Story 3D because I hear Cave Story is so good and I haven't played any of them.  I could probably sit back one day and relive OoT with better graphics in my mind.  Done it enough it feels like.

So how many weapons can you map to the touchscreen? It sounds like you're saying the button mapping and screen mapping aren't the same, but could you confirm that?
I think this screen should show how it's laid out. As you can see, you get stuff mapped to buttons as well as an extra I and II slot (bottom left is reserved for the Ocarina).

When you say Hyrule Castle feels bustling, do you mean that they've added voiceless people like in Twilight Princess?
It felt more like Twilight Princess (but not that busy), but I was running out of time, so I didn't have a chance to try to talk to everybody.

Is the gyroscope the only "improvement" to the camera?
That was the only thing that I noticed. I still had to fight with it on occasion.

The top screen shows the A button's context-sensitive command. On the overworld, it also shows the local map because the overworld map is displayed on the bottom screen.

so when u say there is fog is it being used to hide draw distances or is it for atmosphere?
It's still being used to hide some draw distances, but not as much since the 3DS can draw farther.
