Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 750: Nowhere Left to Go but Backwards
« on: December 14, 2021, 03:17:15 PM »
Congratulations on reaching 750!

On franchises that got taken over by spinoffs, my prime examples are Wario Land and the Mario vs Donkey Kong series.

Wario Land 1 took over the Super Mario Land series, and then even within itself changed to the no-death transformations with Wario Land 2&3 and then going back to "normal" with Wario Land 4.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong started off as a continuation of Donkey Kong '94, with a Lemmings-style sidemode. The Lemmings mode took over the series for subsequent sequels.

My son doesn't really play the "game" but loves it as a remote-control car with a camera.  He loves using it to spy on family members.

GAMES I'VE BOUGHT THE MOST: Outside of Mario & Zelda, it's probably Borderlands 2.  And I don't even like Borderlands 2 (I loved Borderlands 1 because it was a novel take on FPS Diablo).  I own Borderlands 2 on PC, Vita, PS4 (as part of the Handsome Collection), and then Switch.

You're right!  It's a LOT of waiting!

I didn't really like Samus Returns, for the reasons you gave.  I'm concerned I'm not gonna like Dread either.  What are your thoughts on Dread?

The English-language version of the Mario Manga that came out this year is a "Best of" collection of clips throughout the years.

There's a Luigi's Mansion chapter leading me to believe there's probably a full volume adapting Luigi's Mansion in Japan.

One chapter also has a content warning about the death of a parent, but I don't know whose parent dies.

How does this compare to Cruisin' Blast, another recent Switch arcadey racer?

I think the Mario Party games are unlikely, given the new Switch game is selling itself on just being several N64 boards with online functionality.

Otherwise this seems like a solid list.

That's a disappointment.  I had heard that this Bloodrayne game was one of the Shovel Knight team's last games before they broke off from Way Forward.

I thought it was a fun segment.

How'd you mail it in so only Jon saw the answers?  I've been wanting to email them a quiz of "What games are on the back of the console box?" (ex. What screenshots are on the back of the launch GBA?) but haven't gotten it together yet.

This sounds like fun.  Zero Mission's my favorite of the series and a great place to start.

WayForward is developing the remakes apparently.

Some More Book Recommendations: I highly recommend Boss Fight Books' "NBA Jam: The Book" by Reyan Ali.  It ends up being a great history of Midway & Williams in the 80s & 90s.

If you want books that describe a bunch of games, FanGamer.com has Jeremy Parish's books that have writeups on every Game Boy, NES, and SNES games by chronological release.  A Virtual Boy book is forthcoming. HG101 also has great books on the Castlevania and Shin Megami Tensei series.

FanGamer also has a Legends of Localization series that goes in-depth on the language localization choices for the original Legend of Zelda and Earthbound, written by the guy who did the Mother 3 translation.

Lastly, I'd suggest keeping an eye out for StoryBundle.com.  About twice a year, they have bundles of digital videogame books (like Humble Bundle), and I usually get something new that's good.  They also often have HG101, Boss Fight Books, and Jeremy Parish books in there.

This looks really neat.

Neal, Mad About You crossed over with Friends.  Lisa Kudrow played the Ursula, the waitresss at the Mad About You cafe.  In Friends, it was revealed that Ursula was Phoebe's evil twin sister.

Schilling is a garbage person & almost bankrupted the State of Rhode Island.  It also killed Big Huge, who made the excellent RTS Rise of Nations.

That said, I really liked Amalur back in the day.  It's a breezy, junkfood single-player MMO with great combat.  Turn off your brain, go from waypoint to waypoint, and have a lot of fun.  Having it on Switch in handheld mode is the perfect way to play.

44
This sounds nice!

I'll also recommend Brett Weiss' two-volume SNES Omnibus, covering every US release. Each game gets its own full page, plus multiple screenshots.  It's fun to flip through & discover games I never knew existed (like that there are three Addams Family games on SNES).

Congratulations on hitting 700!  I started listening in the run up to Episode 400, and it's crazy to think I've been listening for almost half the series' run.

Y'all really put on a tremendous show, full of humor & great insight.  I truly mean it when I call RFN "my favorite podcast."

TalkBack / Re: Cthulhu Saves Christmas (Switch) Review
« on: November 08, 2020, 12:49:19 AM »
Thanks for the review. It convinced me to buy.  I'm a big fan of the idea of seasonal games (like horror games in October) and this is a light, breezy game for the Christmas season.

I like how the battle system forces the player to use all their moves, and not just be reliant on just doing the same two moves all game.

47
Wow. They wouldn't even commit to the next system being in 202X.

The only way to get true analog movement in Super Mario 64 DS is the touch pad & that little thumb-nub that never really felt good.

But on the 3DS, Wii U, and emulators, you can manipulate Mario's speed with the Y button...which is how it works in 2D Mario and Super Mario 3D Land. It's not perfect, but it works well enough, and certainly better than using a stylus or thumb-nub.

I liked Hyrule Warriors a lot, but I wasn't a huge fan of how it focused so much on clearing & controlling rooms. I'm eager to see if this one has that mechanic.

Still, my 6YO son is excited for it.  He's interested in Breath of the Wild but finds the exploration & item-switching a bit overwhelming for his age.  This new Hyrule Warriors should be more his speed.

My 6YO flipped his lid for this one. He instantly got the concept and wants it so bad.

My poor wallet.
