I say NWR makes their own megaton trade show, and calls it something like E1, 'cause we're better than you.

Actually that is a opinion that I think can be backed up. Now that E3 has been tapered down, the only big event left is TGS and even during the past it has been home to BIG announcements (Wiimote anyone?). So I can see announcements being saved for the show, and it being the new E3.

What about the event at Leipzig.
Three main events: E3 (North-America), Leipzig (Europe), TGS (Asia).

Lepzig doesn't seem nearly as big as TGS, at least when it comes to new game or system announcements.

It could be, after all, didn't they announce MS:C at Leipzig or something?

They did announce MS:C and BWii but those are pretty minor games in the overall scheme of things. Compare that to TGS where they announced the Wiimote, there is a big difference. Besides, no one cares about Europe.

But GDC SHOULDN'T be a press event. I hope it never becomes one too. It's a DEVELOPER event.

Obligatory follow-up to Kairon post:

GDC should be something unrelated to companies, unrelated to publishers, and unrelated to standard gaming press events.  It should be seen as a group of trade artists collecting together and discussing their trade.  Gaming announcements shouldn't be made there, unless philosophy is the sole reason of the announcement.  Remember a few years back when several Nintendo devs did presentations about Brain Age and the non-game?  IMO, this is the way it should have been.  They didn't do it to make themselves look good, but rather for the sake of the industry.  Remember Sony trying to use GDC as a breaking ground for Home?  There was very little relevance to gaming development in general that Home had to do with.  No trends or suggestions for developers were made in this announcement.  I think that's wrong.

The guy calling the Wii two duct-taped GC's?  I disagree with him, but his comments were meant solely for his peers, not for the press, and he shouldn't have had to apologize for them, considering the event.

I think the idea is that all the companies are starting to take a more realistic approach to marketing.  You put all this money into marketing a product people won't even be able to play for 2-3 years, and what's the point?

I think they're looking forward to taking control of the timing of game announcements and advertising and spreading it out over the whole year rather than force-feeding us 200 new games in a single week.

Would anyone care about Zack and Wiki or Space Station Tycoon if they were announced in the midst of a traditional E3?  If they had to compete with Zelda Wii and Animal Crossing Wii, would we even remember them?  Most people barely remember SST as it is, really.
That's my opinion, not yours.
