Mafia LXXXVI: Sign-up Thread

Is there still demand for a Mafia game? Do the users who still check out this place once in awhile still feel like meeting up for another round? I guess we'll find out. Since I get the feeling that users may not check up on the forums as often as they once did (maybe once a week or so) I suppose it would be a good idea to let this sign-up thread run for a couple weeks meaning I'd likely launch the game for Sept. 27 although it could be sooner if it turns out this sign-up thread fills up quite quickly. So, let's test the water and see who would still be up for this. Sign up below in the thread if you are ready for any sort of Mafia action.

Perhaps the long break helped but I'm just getting really enthused on the prospect of actually hosting more more Mafia games. That said, it depends if we have enough people that miss playing it or want to play more of this game for awhile. Like if we can have a group of 16 - 20 players who are willing to play it regularly, I think I could pull off having a game every month for a year. Of course, if anyone else wanted to host a game during that time span then it would make it even easier for me to see us having a year of Mafia. When I say 16 - 20 players it allows for some players to take a break if they can't make a game because of life responsibilities and situations. But if a couple people sit out a game but a couple that sat out last game can make the next one then we can sort of ensure that we'd always have enough players to make a more lively game and knowing a certain minimum number will be available would also help make things easier when planning on what roles to have and how many.

Now I'm not expecting people signing up for this game need to feel they are being made to commit to playing a bunch more games in the future but I do wonder if there are players who feel they could so or would be able to make it for more games because they know what the schedule of them is in advance. Perhaps if you are a person who feels they'd be able to play in the majority of games then mention it in the Future Mafia Games thread and a list could be made there to see what a possible baseline would be for the expected minimum number of players in a game.

It suddenly occurs to me that if I do a Harvest Moon theme then I should have the game suddenly branch into two paths after a few days where one game is kind of subpar and the other game is better but now called Story of Seasons.

Thanks, RAB! That means we've now hit the double digit sign-up mark.

Looks like we may be doing this Mafia thing again after all. But I'm still looking for at least 6 more players which means we are only 62.5% of the way there. I sort of mentioned on if we had a core group of 16 - 18 players then it would be easy to go ahead and do a bunch of games in a row. However, I should clarify that when I launched this thread, I had the number 16 in mind for the minimum amount of players to participate or I was going to call it off. I don't want to do a game with like 12 or 13. I know they've been done in the past but they've never seemed to turn out that great. There's something about the 16 mark. When a game hits at least that mark then the games seem to really take off. There's more action, more crazy momentum swings, more standout moments for players as new days seem to put new people in the spotlight. Anyways, I just sort of realized I should probably mention what my goal here is since we are now seeing the player list growing in size.

Just lots happened and I actually have a part time job now being a moderator on Silver Screen and Roll.  I am also on my online friends twitch channels not to mention me playing Switch games when I have the chance. I might be moving to a new place sometime this next year.

So tentatively in.  I will confirm more one way or another closer to the end of signups.

I said I'd like to launch the game on Sept. 27th if we had enough players but we currently do not. We are sitting at 12 and I want 4 more. I've been sending out some invites the past couple days but it could still be a bit of time before people check in on the forums and see them. So, I'll give this another week to see what develops but it may be that nothing does happen here.

I sent out invites to nickmitch, TheFleece, Luigi Dude, ThePerm, thatguy, Lucario, ejamer and RABicle. RAB and Luigi Dude did sign up. ThePerm may join. Lucario sent a message that he'd check it out but I've heard nothing since and that was a week ago. Just going by people who have played prior games or are still active and checking out these forums. I was debating if I should send something to ShyGuy but I always feel like he'd rather opt out and I'm pressuring him to play so he does out of civility. So, I've been hesitant to send an invite his way. I don't know. Anyone else I should be thinking of or that you'd want to send an invite to?

EDIT: Oh, GK! I was looking over the list of players from last game and I'm sending him an invite now. That'll be a pass from GK. Too bad. I thought he showed promise for being a good player for this game.

Ok Mafia Party People, we have achieved the 16 player minimum just in time. (We may have one more. TheFleece sent me a pm indicating he might be willing to play. I messaged him back with some more details but haven't heard anything since. That was on Friday. I've been hoping he'd show up and let me know for sure whether he's in or out.)

Because I wasn't sure if this was game was going to happen or not (or which game we might be doing), I left the rules and planning alone and put my attention on inviting people and seeing who might be free to join. So, now I'll have to bang out the actual gameplay information. My goal is to have that done by tonight.

As for which game we'll be playing, less than half the players who signed up voted for the poll which suggest a lot of you will be fine with whatever theme and ruleset is selected. Harvest Moon has a slight lead at 3 votes. One could look at that like the winner. Yet Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin had 2 votes each which suggests 4 people would prefer something a bit more complicated versus the 3 who would like something simple. Because there was no huge majority or really popular choice in the poll and the real majority was not voting implying they are good with anything then I guess I'll take that to mean it is the host's pleasure to select which theme they'd like to do.

And since it seemed to take awhile to gather players for this game making me wonder if it will be even more difficult to get a game launched in the future, I am going to go with the Luigi's Mansion theme. I'd really like to see another game done under the rule set from the Metroid game to see if it is well balanced or if it might be broken in some way. (I also wonder what might happen if a killer does get the flag on Day 1 or 2 and were to win early. Would players be ok with a quick win or decide the rule sucks if it were to happen?) Moreover, most of the players for this game were around for the Metroid game. With the majority having experience of playing a game with that rule set, I'm curious to see if that will result in different strategies this game now that you are familiar with how it works. Plus, with the month of October, a Luigi's Mansion theme seems most fitting.

In the meantime, the sign-up thread will remain open today in case there are any other last minute additions before the game launches or you can think of anyone else you'd like to invite.

I'd be alot of work for you I'm sure, but I wonder if the "worst" happened and the game ended on day one or two, would it be possible to have a few days down time and have a more normal game using Harvest Moon with the same group? That way people wouldn't possibly feel "cheated". Just throwing it out there to see what you and others think.

Let's the first killer gets the flag on Day 1. Day 2 is the chance to take them out. If the killer isn't removed on Day 2 then they win at the start of Day 3. So, yes, the shortest the game could be is two days. That said, we could continue to play the game as a semi-normal mafia game and see who gets second as it were. Or we just call it quits.

That said, my plan was to try and do this regularly. So, when this game ends, I'll probably put sign-ups for the next game about a week after it ends. Let's see what happens if we have some faster turn around time for these Mafia games.

We haven't paused on weekends once we switched over to the Majority Rule and 48 hour or so voting periods. With the longer game days, pausing no longer seems to be necessary.

Eh, it'll give you something to do over the course of Day 1 besides nervously posting in the Day One thread and hoping you don't become a target.  ;)

Timing at this point is all off. I had hoped we'd have had enough players over a week ago. With Metroid Dread releasing this Friday, now the game has to compete with that when it could have been possibly winding up or over by then. There's no way to really work around that now aside from maybe delaying the start of the game even further and I don't want to do that.

I will say I am looking forward to the Harvest Moon game next. Typing up these rules and roles has made changed my mind and made me look forward to a simpler game next time. Still need to add the Treasures aka Abilities aka Power-ups to the list of Rules and Roles. However, I would suggest that players just check out the Metroid Mafia Rules thread as those will be pretty much be the same abilities being used this game just with a different skin or name to them. In the meantime, I am going to start handing out the roles and will this game into action.
