Title: Metroid Prime 4
Post by: Khushrenada on June 13, 2017, 12:37:00 PM
Alright, ya whiners. Ya finally got your wish. There's a new Metroid Prime that Nintendo will release.... someday. Zero Suit Samus DLC most likely to follow.

Prime 4.... Will it continue to story of Prime 3?

"For today's E3, we're going to be focusing on games coming out in 2017"

"Except Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon RPG Switch, now be quiet already".

Not an announcement that lights me on fire, but happy for those here that have been thirsty for a real Metroid game for some time now.

Prime 4.... Will it continue to story of Prime 3?

Probably considering the Federation Force ending continuous with what Prime 3's ending began.  Which means Sylux will play a huge role since he's in the ending for both games and Federation Force ends with him unleashing  Metriods at some facility.

If the story relies on me being familiar with Federation Force then I, and 90% of the Metroid fanbase, are going to be pretty fucking confused.  I suggest they have a prologue cut scene to bring everyone up to speed.

I am tenatively excited.  I don't know the dev, don't know what the gameplay will be like, don't even know what the game looks like.  So I'm happy that Metroid isn't dead but this is kind of like when they announce a new Star Fox game.  Is this going to be Metroid in a manner that I actually enjoy?  I want something that actually has Metroidvania style gameplay and isn't some linear action game or full-on FPS.  And I want normal controls as an option!  Metroid Prime 3 was a physical grind for me to be aiming with my arms the whole time.

While it's nice that Nintendo is revisiting Metroid, this announcement is literally a logo and "Hey, we're working on a thing." I'll get excited when Nintendo shows more.

I actually hope this is true, because it means the game should be pretty different from the first three. I wouldn't want the exact same formula again.

This reminds me of the Wii U at E3 2013, where Nintendo "fired off all its vaporware cannons" as people said back then.

Agreed! :) The previous Prime games were very good, so it'll be a high bar to clear, but yeah I wouldn't mind seeing Retro do something different or original. In any case, I'm very glad we're getting not one but TWO new Metroid titles, fingers crossed they'll be good too.

I'm very happy this game exists.  I won't be excited until I see a real trailer, but I am happy.

Continuing from MP3 on Wii, they're really going to take advantage of the improved motion control in the joy cons. Opening doorknobs and twisting gears and sipping hot alien tea will be soooo much more intuitive now.

It's so Nintendo that it's just a logo. At this point I got more done on a Metriod game. You would think they would have been working on this game since 3 years ago and have something significant to show. Although you could probably find posts off me saying something similar then.

When they plan games they really always seem to be in a bind with game droughts. Hopefully this'll improve when the ds line dies.

Nintendo probably does have more to show. It just didn't. And obviously, the point of this is unbridled hype. I still hate when companies pull that nonsense.

At least Metroid: Samus Returns looks awesome. Hopefully, MercurySteam pulled a Mirror of Fate and developed the game in HD and ported to 3DS. I'd much rather place this on Switch.

Surprise, we actually have something to show for..... 3DS.  I hope they have HD assets and eventually port it to Switch because I'm not buying a 3ds(maybe a 2ds). The game looks a lot better in gameplay than in the trailer too. It runs really smooth. If there was a Metroid theme 2ds with a pack in and it was a good price I would buy it in a hurry.

I am glad to see Retro not working on the game, as others have said I want to see them do something different. It is odd though that it has been so long since we heard about a game from them though, it has been over 3 years since Tropical Freeze.

I think it's safe to say that whatever Retro is cooking up won't be ready to roll until the late fall/holiday period of 2018, and thus probably won't see the light of day until next year's E3, or at best teased during a spring direct. I wouldn't expect Prime 4 until holiday 2019 at the earliest.

If Nintendo only showed the Metroid II remake there would be an uproar like no other. This Prime 4 announcement was specifically for damage control. Otherwise people would be losing their ship complaining that Nintendo only has remake coming and only for the 3DS.

I don't want FP Metroid anymore. i hope they can surprise me.

Maybe they mean a hangglider? PilotWings confirmed! Click off the Joycons to eject from a plane, keep your parachute steady by holding them upright, while feeling the soar of the wind through HDRumble TM.

Phazonback Friday. An old nugget that may or may not tell us a little bit about MP4:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-06-17-next-proper-metroid-prime-would-likely-now-be-on-nx

Next proper Metroid Prime "would likely now be on NX"
6/17/2015

Quote
"If we started for Wii U now, it would likely take three years or so. So it would likely now be on Nintendo's NX console," he said.

My guess is that it's 1.5-2yrs away, unfortunately.

Speaking with Tanabe, it was clear he had plenty of ideas for the game, including a focus on a single planet that has a time-shifting mechanic, similar to Metroid Prime 2: Echoes' single planet with dark and light variants.

"Instead of broadening it to more planets I would have one and would focus on the timeline, and being able to change that. That's one interesting idea I have in mind... but I understand many people thought that [Echoes] was too difficult."

I always thought Young Samus would be a super interesting character. Basically Newt from Aliens raised by the bird people from Dark Crystal. The space pirates, they mostly come out at night, mostly.

Welp, another 4th of July, another Retro tweet wishing everyone a happy 4th with an extremely pixelated gif of someone cutting ribs. *shrug*

https://twitter.com/RetroStudios/status/1014920006809870341

Their Twitter kicked off January 2015 and...

Honestly, WTF is Retro working on?  What could possibly be so amazing that keeping everyone in the dark for this long wouldn't disappoint?  F-Zero? DK64 Returns?

...^that^ was posted one year ago, yet still the mystery continues...

Well, in an odd bit of coincidence, (and to create a crossover with my Smash Bros. thread thereby creating the Khushrenada/Linkle Link shared and united thread/topic universe) there was a posting on 4Chan claiming that there are 11 characters that will be unveiled and added to Smash Ultimate still to be shown. They've all got codenames however so it could be anything and nothing. But one of the codenames is Prime Ribs. What does that have to do with Nintendo franchise or characters or even other third party series? No one knows but the guesses are focused on a Metroid Prime character as some likely meaning if even real. However, with the continued focus of BBQ on Retro's twitter account, perhaps it has something to do with the mysterious game they may or may not actually be working on. Although, it seems to be a stretch that this meat and character are related since those are more likely spare ribs or pork ribs and not prime ribs in the Retro Twitter gif.

So, what I'm saying is.... I got nothing.

6 months after their last tweet looking for a MP4 art director, they tweeted out happy new year then returned to their eternal slumber:

Worth noting perhaps that Stephen Dupree (lead designer on DKC: Tropical Freeze) has been back at Retro (https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/donkey-kong-tropical-freeze-lead-returns-to-retro/), possibly for a while already. Dupree was previously involved with New Super Lucky's Tale which launched recently.

As much as I enjoyed the Metroid Prime trilogy.  I think I would rather have a Donkey Kong Country Returns quality world and level design for Super Metroid.  And I think a Western Team could get that true Super Metroid feel of dread and storytelling from each screen, that has really been lacking in the 2D Metroid games, since Super Metroid.

Don't get me wrong, the games were great and Super Metroid Zero Mission is possibly my second favorite Super Metroid Game, but none of them properly had the level of environmental storytelling the SNES game had.

I'd definitely like them to take a whack at this (and certainly much more so than Mercury Steam), but I think there's a bit of an issue with massive oversaturation of the 2D genre at this point. (The video game version of "everything's too derivative of Pavement".)

I'd like to see a foray into a 2.5D Metroid, with "3D" maps but sidescrolling navigation (with interactivity with foreground and background elements). I'm imagining a bit of Lone Survivor's DNA in there. However, this would NOT be like Other M or those diorama-style PS2 Castlevania games. It would be very hard to pull off (probably why no one's really tried it), but I'd bet Retro could manage something formally innovative like that.
