TalkBack / Re: Nintendo, We Need Voice Chat
« on: June 29, 2015, 11:15:45 PM »
I feel hopeful for the future when I see mature Nintendo fans can criticize Nintendo's actions (or inactions) in such professional ways. Voice chat ain't only for the haters but for the (very) social among us. I even consider a big contradiction that games like Splatoon will have a mode to play with friends, but without VC. What does Ninty thinks it's going to happen?...the answer is obvious, those competitive teams of friends will start using 3rd party PC VCs to pull ahead the rest and heavily dominate that mode, generating a disadvantage to those who don't have a PC/smartphone nearby or don't have friends on their teams. If you hate VC and are happy with Splatoon so far, let me tell you, you'll hate how much you'll lose on that mode once the competitive COD-type of ppl teams, like the one I belong to take over (similar to unwanted bikers arriving to a peaceful bar :)).
Nintendo should be humble and accept that either they have a permanently backwards and useless excuses (protecting children, perceiving that VC isuseless, etc.) or they simply don't know how to do it well. I personally think they don't know a thing cause of previous implementations of VC in released Ninty games, mostly mediocre work. Ninty should pick up the phone and ask Capcom or Activision how to get functional VC on the WiiU, but probably their egos are up to the roof and they don't think they should ask for help from anyone.

Great show guys

So I assume guys you either read or saw the Splatoon Japanese interview and can confirm that the developers really said that there won't be any voice chat during the game? (at most in the lobby)

Well Nintendo has to start learning the hard-way then. I am not buying, and I hope many other fans follow. As simple as that, it was one of my most anticipated games, but in 2015 they still insist with antiquated practices. They claim this BS that they do market studies. In NA, at least that's what they claim why they didn't bring the regular New 3DS to NA. It's just BS and lies, and maybe laziness to do the hardwork and take some risks. I am not buying a 3DS either (and I do have money to throw at them).

It's 2015 and no cross-buy yet?, 2015 and still a cumbersome account system?

And the worst, not a decent online?

I can't forgive me when I see 3rd party developers doing a better job on the Wii U with their voice chat, the COD games all work fine with voice chat, and MH3U on the Wii U has the best voice chat that even remains during loading time!

And if they are planning another console, you would think that they try to experiment with some of those issue on the Wii U or 3DS, which tells me that they will keep their awful un-western  practices.

Well keep selling bad then.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo's Gamepads: Episode 4 (Finale)
« on: February 22, 2015, 04:20:41 PM »
I don't think Nintendo has invented anything, well, maybe the D-pad. But they have been the 1st in implementing, with mild or great success, old ideas that were failure or just experiments before.

Different from MS and Sony, they can't create technology, and since their revenues come only from gaming, they have to make sure to make profits relatively quickly. Before the WIiU Nintendo used to make profit from every HW sold, this is the old Gumpei Yokoi/ Hiroshi Yamauchi doctrine that helped Nintendo become what it is today, and actually I don't think Nintendo has enough infrastructure and know how to change and become a Sony or MS.

That's why I'm totally ok with them looking at old tech and try to find neat applications to gaming. You can tell that all the industry (e.g. SEGA) looked to Nintendo when finding the best way to design their controllers. Same with Sony....they probably were thinking in Mario 64, Zelda, Goldeneye, etc. when they saw the successful implementation of the analog stick, and later with the Move. Same with the Vita and smartphones, implementing gaming the way the DS did, and so on.

Ppl expect too much from a company that don't have a proper R&D, their R&D is pretty much engineers trying to reuse old tech...sort of remind me of that scene in the movie Apolo 13, were engineers back on Earth try to design a device from spare parts that can be found on the Apolo capsule. Even if Nintendo were to use all their war chest in R&D it would be too big for the necessity of releasing new tech every couple of years. Only companies that sell tech on a regular basis in different areas, can afford to have a stable R&D team/budget.

I don't expect their next console, the famous "hybrid" everyone talks about, will be more powerful that the current gen, as I said, they need to make money, or at most lose little money per unit sold, they can't risk selling a state-of-the-art machine that will be too costly and too risky financially. I guess anyone can dream, but realistically they will stick with what have kept them afloat all these years.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Explains Why Smaller New 3DS Isn't Coming to NA
« on: February 17, 2015, 11:49:43 PM »
I hope they are making their research accurate enough. I'M NOT BUYING.

I've been waiting for years to get a 3DS, I wanted all this years the smaller model, with better 3D and better battery life, and now with a decent library. I'm all about portability, and I travel a lot due to my work.

I have money to spend in lots of games, I would have bought 10 brand new games initially.

But I won't....good luck Nintendo

You're only hurting yourself. Good games are good games and they work just as well on the old 3DS as the new. I haven't played the NEW 3DS yet but I've had plenty of fun and enjoyment from my launch day 3DS up to now.

I forgot to say that I like most of Nintendo novelties, including the wii-remote. I don't consider myself a conservative gamer, am always willing to try something new...so I love the no-3D-glasses idea, but I also make my research before buying. At launch, too many ppl complained about the 3D effect losing it's strength at very minor shake. If I buy a 3DS I would play mostly with 3D on....so there you go, I want a portable clam-shell no-3D-glasses handheld that play amazing games and who also has a decent processing/loading speeds. The New 3DS XL doesn't do the portable with me, also I heard comments from "perfectionists" that the pixels are more noticeable on the XL, which makes sense.

Did I say 10 games?, I just counted my WiiU games. I have 15 full-priced hard-copies!!, 5 digital retail, 15 VC, 6 indies....sorry Nintendo, it seems you don't want my money!....maybe one of my travels will take me to Japan....maybe region lock will be gone before the small New 3DS comes, who knows....only then I will consider to buy.....oh and I also find cool the plates!

Casti 64 was awful, I bought it few days after launch.

I turned on the game, I was so in awe and excitement after that great intro with the kid laying the violin....

But then shortly after I was WTF is this?....want my money back!!

So yeah....another pro was THAT INTRO...so to me the game is 4/10

Given the bad sales/reviews of PS AS Battle Royale, wouldn't 3rd party devs think twice, or ask for way more money or shares from Sony if they eventually wanted a 2nd installment with more 3rd party characters?

Smash in the other hand, is so popular, so polished, so well reviewed that I bet that devs are more willing to hand out their famous characters just to get some exposure, or even if they ask for money, I bet that they would negotiate better prices with a Nintendo brawler than with Sony's.

The Snake Smash got was PS snake, not NES Snake.

I don't know, I bet that if Sakurai calls his buddies at Capcom/Konami/Platinum/Namco he can get 3rd parties way easier than Sony can. Not that WiiU/3DS current Smash needs more characters, but maybe for the next consoles they will consider a couple of 3rd parties here and there.

Also. In this podcast, James voice was significantly dimmer than Danny's. I had my laptop's volume maxed out and any typical noise in my house would have prevented me to hear what JC was saying, and I imagine if I used headphones or plugged speakers once I could hear JC, Danny's voice would have been even louder!. Is here a way to fix that for future podcast?

Great show guys. Lots of useful info. I am interested to buy the small New 3DS, cause I'm all about portability, and every news I hear makes me want it now, here in Canada, even more!

I like the youtube option of the podcast. I hope you can keep it, as long as it's not that much work for you guys!

I would appreciate that, either here at NWR or in the youtube (or both) you can name the songs used during some part of the podcast!.

Looking forward to hear from you soon again!

I never owned a GBA, but judging from the games I've played on the WiiU VC, the sound chip of the GBA must have been mediocre compared to the SNES....and I remember that the big catch of the GBA was that it supposed to be a SNES in your pocket!

TalkBack / Re: Metroid: Zero Mission - Review Mini
« on: September 10, 2014, 04:05:50 PM »
Man how anxious I am to get this game on my WiiU VC.

I never owned a handheld so I missed most of Nintendo portable games all these past decades. I also dislike the NES graphics (aged pretty bad....and I'm a child of the NES era...the SNES games have aged way better) so I have no intentions to buy the original Metroid (which is the template of Zero mission).

Having said that, I can't praise Nintendo (and subsidiaries) enough with their GBA ports. Out of all the VC games, the GBA are highly rated games with enhanced quality on the WiiU. I am not a purist so I welcome the screen smoothing, a very nice option to have, and so easy to turn on/off. And the scanned manuals...don't get me started how much fan service they are doing with them!

I'm still disappointed with how slow is the porting process. Early after launch, I gave the WiiU the benefit of the doubt in terms of time to finish the ports, but now I feel is too much. The ports have existed for years in the PC community, Nintendo could hire the people who did it, or hire a couple of recent graduates to do the ports. I don't think it takes that much time and money. It's just seems Nintendo doesn't want my money. Specially during the summer drought of WiiU titles, it would have been perfect to have a VC action plan to keep us busy/happy.

As you "ordered" us...I will get this game as soon it gets released in NA.

The 1st couple of Smash 3DS videos were lame...but as we get closer to release date, that game looks kind of tempting. I don't have a 3DS and was considering to buy one just for Smash the last couple of weeks....all was ok till Nintendo announced the New3DS...now I'm gonna wait....get the WiiU Smash and then see if I feel I need a portable version of it.

The New3DS looks awesome, faster, better battery, better 3D, customizable skins and Desktop, 2 analogs, more buttons. Sweet.

Good show guys!

« on: September 02, 2014, 11:50:40 PM »
I ask this seriously: if Nintendo released a battle mode level pack that had a bunch of levels in it for say, a dollar a track. And lets say they actually work well for the mode.

Would you feel ripped off that they weren't in the game to begin with?

Depends of much you paid for the game.

I paid full price and got a free game. So far I enjoyed Mario Kart, both online and single player and the free game.

So to me, the game already paid itself, so no, I don't consider this a rip-off. Mind that I never played battle mode that much, I didn't have that much competition from my bros and friends back in the days of snes and N64. After that I never owned a Mario Kart, so I have yet to experience a proper battle mode online. I agree that the current one sucks and it's plainly boring.

Now, the game is not perfect. I consider way more important a proper online voice chat and the ability to form parties. Then and only then I would prioritize battle modes. I would happily pay for battle mode DLC if they show some good maps and similar pricing as the announced DLC.

Nintendo just need ONE more patch and ONE more DLC to make MK8 perfect

Patch: Expanded voice chat that can be used during race. Friends can remain in parties and move across online lobbies together. Patch the patch; it's a dumb decision that the only way to display the on-screen map is pressing "-" on the gamepad, there is no way to control that from a wii-remote/classic controller. Ability to switch characters/vehicles after online races without disconnecting from the lobby.

DLC: Decent Battle mode maps: 8 maps. If they want to save some effort they can just go back to the old games and remake some of the old maps or base their new maps on the old maps that worked!

TalkBack / Re: New 3DS, It Can't Be Worse Than the Old 3DS
« on: September 02, 2014, 02:10:52 AM »
AMEN!

I never had a handheld....but was sure to buy a 3DS....but wanted a truly portable one with better battery life than the original.

The battery got extended between 1/2 hr to 1 hr, which is meh...but still an improvement.

The market won't be fragmented cause it makes absolutely no financial sense at all to go into a crazy mode of releases for the New3DS...who will forget 40 million units?...instead I predict it will ocasionally receive Wii ports during those dry months of no big 3DS games. Making ports is always cheaper and faster than anything else.

The ability to swap skins is awesome, and so having a more stable 3D effect.

Faster OS, faster web browsing, faster downloading.

Great article!

p.s.: Question. Who doesn't use a screen-protector in some of their touch-pad electronic devices these days?...they are all scratch attractors!, I learned that during the pda and early ipod years!...doesn't matter if the New3DS has corrected the scratch issue, you should always have a screen protector!

TalkBack / Re: Is the New 3DS More Game Boy Color or Game Boy Micro?
« on: August 30, 2014, 07:30:41 AM »
I never owned a handheld but I have been considering to buy a 3DS since its library seems awesome. But I needed a more portable system (similar size to the original 3DS, but better battery life) before buying and this system seems to answer that, albeit I will only get between 30 min to an hour extra...plus I want to use the 3D, I don't have eye or brain issues....so I like the adaptive 3D of the New3DS

Cons:

- We have enough evidence (data points) that Nintendo PR and advertizing ppl (Iwata's fault?) have no clue how to chose names for their hardware. All of this can be traced back to the DS days and thereafter.

- Another weird timing in the announcement. News are global these days, and even if they want to release this in 'Murica in 2015 I can't stop thinking that some costumers will now just wait past Christmas. I think smash may have brought some fans, not many, but some to the 3DS specially with the bundles they will offer. Even I was considering buying one for smash, specially with the tempting Club Nintendo smash-cd offer!...but to me this announcement is more important than Smash and now I will wait longer...I will get smash on the wiiu so...

- Social media hyperbole: Just as there were so many critics with the 2DS, there will be lots of critics (I wonder if they ever owned a Nintendo console) of this. No this won't fragment the market, it does not make any financial sense to forget the 40 million 3DS install base. We also have historical evidence with the DSi, not enough software was produced and the old DS remained strong. The extra CPU will be used to port wii games for little or no effort. That's what Nintendo wants know....keep the buz with the 3DS. Few original games will come, sometimes with droughts apart, so why not filling the -media- gap with Wii-ports announcements?

- Is just me, or you guys agree that, even without having test it, those rear buttons will become very tricky to use?...I don't see how I won't be ending up pressing L while trying to press ZL in game-stressing situations!

- If they improved the CPU and 3D technology...why not upgrade the 3D cameras resolution?...sigh...opportunity lost!...Ninty is the only low-tech affordable-tech company that have the tech to both record and see right away the results of 3D photos and videos!...specially now that they double down with the 3D display!

Pros:

- Better battery life, for me this is a must for any handheld...can't understan buying one to play games mostly at home....duh. Even if I'm a hardcore gamer, I just think that's too much!

- Interchangeable skins!....awesome....the 3DS has been the go to handheld when is about cuteness and case style....so many options...so many great skins! I bet that 3rd parties will jump like crazy into making even better looking skins! Do not underestimate the power of user skin customization! Even the teenager side of my brain would have loved that back in the day!

- An attempt for more buttons and extra stick....well this remains to be seen, I understand the size restrictions so in principle I give Ninty the benefit of the doubt. The "Nintendo nipple" and the ZR & ZL additions could proven awesome, but I have my reservations.

- Faster downloading and web-browsing times: no brainier....nobody should complain about this.

- Amibo: Don't care but I know ppl who love all of this so I guess it's ok....all of this aims to the future of a merge of the handheld and console business of Nintendo.

- Wii-ports!!: Yes!!!...mark my words....we won't see original content created for the New3DS but we may see an explosion of Nintendo AAA Wii games coming!

- Worth 3D display. I've seen the 3D effect on those games worth playing with it...and it's awesome. I did notice the view angle restrictions, and can see that becoming annoying, specially when I take flights...so I really appreciate the new adaptive 3D effect. I will use the 3D as much as I can!

All and all, I agree with this move by Nintendo. They probably updated the system cause the new parts are cheap or they got better deals with suppliers. At the same time it provide a refreshing update for prospective costumers, that may be good enough to incentive sales up to 5-10 million more...I think that in the actual market, Nintendo should be satisfied if they pass the 50 million 3DS, with huge celebrations if they ever reach 60!

Cybernator's 2d mechanics are cool and I love the game...but the flying missions are very and artificially difficult, and lower the overall rate for this game to me...Being one of those technical ppl u guys take about I would give it at least a 70/100...

Oh and the bonus you get after the early trick that earns you the Napalm gun really saves the day, is such a nice and powerful weapon to have.

And as Guillaume says, save states really help a lot.

p.s.: BTW not that many ppl knows this Cybernator trick, probably cause the game was never that popular:

I still think Legends is better 2D platformer, solo, or more enjoyable than NSMBU. Yeah the "overworld" is lame, but that's not the main core of the game. Once I got used to the controls I feel they have way more precision than NSMBU, cause Mario has a slight slide that ruin the controls for me, albeit the overworld looks nice.

So I take Guillaume's comments with a grain of salt. I have not played the co-op, but as a solo game....it's awesome, also I like the records interface so I can compete with friends and the world.

I really like the "invaded" levels, it forces me to memorize and time button mashing almost to perfection. I got all the Teensies on that game. And got a couple of gold cups on the online challenges.

Nice animations, nice music, challenging. Not perfect but at least 8/10
