CG, while awesome in the present, never stands the test of time. Look at anything made two years ago. Hell, look at AVATAR, the most technological film in the past decade. It looks dated now.

Because when the CG effects are done well, they are more impressive than any "practical" effect and can do more.

No, they're not. Even the best CGI is still a pale imitation of the most mediocre practical effect. Films with great practical effects will always look great. Films with great CGI will look dated by next year. Practical effects actually exist on some plane, and don't suffer from all of the tiny problems that a functioning brain picks CGI apart for. The way lighting bounces, absorbs, and reflects for example. CGI is really only fit to touch-up practical effects, not replace them.

I should be seeing Despicable Me 2 today. Debating that or go and enjoy the nice weather.
...
If you like the original Despicable Me then you'll Enjoy Despicable Me 2.  I saw it on the 4th.  I didn't pay for the first film, got it on a promotion, enjoyed it, and so I thought I give back with this one.

On the whole CGI thing.  If its an animated feature its debatable w/ where the tech has gotten.  For Real life thing where their blended in how tech moves to the next and techniques got better things get dated really fast.  Practical effects don't suffer from that fidelity problem.

Morris, you must be watching the wrong films because good cgi looks much better than good practical effects. And good cgi can make something look real, practical effects age terribly too.

Lone Ranger - Not as bad as you'd think. Too long, and a little too much action, but...serviceable.

Fast Five was a good movie, so don't be hating on that one. Haven't seen the others besides the first one though (and wasn't a big fan of the first one).

It was. One of the best of all time? Not even close. But if you like action movies, it's definitely very good and more than worth watching (at least in theatres, I haven't watched it at home).

I disagree...  this was made in 2005 in the first season of the revived series of doctor who(with not that much money  to spare on CGI)... and it still looks impressive to this day...

I recently saw the movie 'Monsieur Lazhar', which despite not having been re-dubbed in any way for the English speaking audience(although subtitles aren't that bad honestly) still carrys my full recommendation for its powerful character and subject matter

Counterexample: Look at Zodiac, which has tons of CG that you probably didn't even realize was CG.

yeah... that entire two part episode of doctor who takes place during a bombing run at the height the London Blitz and the cgi of things like barrage balloons and German bombers passing along  becomes very believable as well (partially because even during indoor scenes you can hear them whizzing along their merry way)

while many studios have dabbled in CGI
very few seem to be able to handle CGI well...

IMO the first rule of CGI is that it needs to blend with everything else in the film...

Well, I just got out of Pacific Rim and well...yeah, go see it.  I really ****ing loved that movie, as a fan of giant robot animation and action movies in general. I have precisely one major problem with the film, which is a major subplot that isn't very well-written, but overall it's just a smart, fun movie that manages to merge together so many influences (Evangelion is ALL OVER this movie) and a very international cast into a near-perfect blend. It's certainly not a perfect movie, but it's easily the best one I've seen this year and I'll be shocked if the 2nd Hobbit movie or the Thor sequel tops it.  In the words of Angry Joe, it gets a "BADASS Seal of Approval".

I really hope that movie does well.  After all these years of Transformers films written for the lowest of the lowest common denominators, we needed an action film like this to set the new standard.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

you can't not post the trailer for it.

I think I'm gonna need to revive Mystery Funhouse Theater for this movie.
It looks Terrifically Horrible.

Well, I just got out of Pacific Rim and well...yeah, go see it.

Hell yes.  I went in to the movie expecting nothing more than mechs fighting monsters and that is exactly what I got.  Mindless awesomeness.  I just wish they did the Australian accents better.  Those fake ones made me cringe.

I was surprised however that the Aussie mech (Striker Eureka) didn't get killed off in the first 5 minutes of the movie like I thought it would.

And whoever had the idea for Gyspy Danger to beat a monster with a cargo ship should be knighted.
