I don't really understand how Nintendo could vastly undership a game that they spent more marketing dollars on than any game ever.

Seriously, it's stupidly like this that lends credence to the whole "artificial shortage" hoo hah.

I don't think there's any way to tell yet since it's only officially been on sale for a few hours (14 if you count places open 24 hours that started selling at midnight). Based on the fact that most places stopped taking preorders weeks in advance, though, I'd say it's doing pretty well.

When a Wal-Mart store gets almost 200 copies of Brawl... almost 100 copies of Mario Kart... and 15 copies of Wii Fit, something is wrong.

Well they do have to manufacture larger balance boards. But thats all I got.  I stopped believing Nintendo were purists after this wii shortage.

It makes sense that they wouldn't have anywhere near as many copies as those two games, a $90 game isn't going to sell as well as a $50 game, especially an untested new game versus major franchises, and because of the inclusion of the balance board the package is pretty big and stores probably don't want to have too many in stock piling up. Nintendo said in Europe, and I would guess they'll do the same in America, that they were going to keep restocking quickly for the first few weeks.

I feel like your untested new expensive game theory would make sense if they didn't throw millions of dollars into the marketing...

Nintendo is and always has been very conservative in how they do business. They want it to do well, they're trying to get it to do well, but they're not taking chances. I'll bet that not many stores even got 15 copies of Wii Guitar Hero III in their first shipment and that's a major franchise that cost the same as Wii Fit.

It's the simple fact that they have to make balance boards for each WiiFit. It's not just another disc they can press, they actually have to produce an entirely new, additional accessory from completely different manufacturers.

We've already seen Nintendo pushed to the limits of their manufacturing capabilities by successful. Not just with the Wii and DS, but also with even something as simple as DS game cases. Remember the plastics shortage that caused them to ship DS games in cardboard cases in Europe? If you're already having difficulty making CASES for your games, I'm not surprised if you can't crank out 2 million giant multiple-scale balance boards for launch.

Oh, of note the US Balance Board is supposedly the same as the JPN board.  Of course, my source is Wikipedia.

Yeah, Nintendo did say that the boards are the same, they give different weight limits for them because of different standards for scales in the different countries.

By having you enter it for the game. Interesting how it calculates pressure like that.  Since the balance board is supposed to be just a large flat wiimote on the ground and all.

I think it's been a scale (or two) from the very beginning... remember that interview where Miyamoto (?) talks about the sumo wrestler using two scales to weigh in?

Has anybody done any sort of tests of the accuracy of the balance board's weight measurement?  It's telling me I'm like five pounds lighter than what my bathroom scale says... not that I'm complaining, but I don't know whom to believe.
