Gonna tempt fate here and try to be safe with the option that includes a target blast mode, Super Smash Bros. For Wii U!

Just to be clear I still haven't finished the third Ace Attorney game nor have I started Apollo Justice which is the fourth mainline game in the series.

Lol, out of curiosity what series do you have the most unplayed entries of? I think for me it might be Donkey Kong: got the Wii game, DK Jungle Beat, and Tropical Freeze - all of which I've tried just once and finished only a few levels of so far. Well and the Civ bundle I got yesterday, that's also 3 games with a bunch of expansions.

Oh and I've got several Platinum Games titles in the backlog, but I guess those aren't really a series (Madworld, Viewtiful Joe 2, Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101). Consumerism is so ridiculous haha.

Back in round one my guess was Star Fox Zero. Someone must have thought I'd choose it again!

Makes sense to me, everyone knows the decision making of humans always reliably mimics autocorrelation and never fluctuates.

As mentioned earlier, with no VC Day 1 on 3DS and Wii U, this now seems to be Nintendo's modus operandi. My only theory as to why this is the case is that Nintendo wants to have fewer things to look after at launch. With a lot of people suddenly buying a system at one time and booting up on their network, there could be glitches or bugs with the interface that need to be patched along with issues with all the games being released at the same time. So, keeping the VC off the console for a little while is one less potential problem to cause any issues or headaches.

Could be yeah, but maybe it's just a "lucky side-effect" of not having the full system done like they wanted to entirely? Assuming the average console cycle lasts 5~ years for Nintendo, they're only right on the cusp here. Wii U's poor performance probably had them rush development in some ways.

To be honest I'm not sure how big of a deal this is; the day-1 crowd will likely mostly be Nintendo converts who are buying their new Zelda machine. And the eShop will be up and running right? But yeah you'd expect VC at launch nowadays, and it's not really the kind of thing you can announce at E3 without receiving scorn.

General Gaming / Re: Which Civ game is the best entrypoint?

Oh wow I hadn't even seen that bundle, they have a similar thing on steam with like a thousand DLC packs and whatnot on offer right now which is what I was eyeing. Thanks for the link!!!

Think I'll just go for the bundle for all three yeah, if Civ5 doesn't run on my PC it's not such a loss at these prices lol. Is Civ5 the one you guys use for multiplayer?

(Unrelated thought but Christ how do game developers even make money nowadays, feels like digital distribution is a real race-to-the-bottom. Not just on steam and these bundles, but I've gotten so many cheap download titles on Wii U as well.)

EDIT: kicked a few extra bucks to charity & the developer to stave off guilt.

General Gaming / Which Civ game is the best entrypoint?
« on: February 23, 2017, 08:30:38 AM »
So since there's no giant open air world games coming out soon at all whatsoever, I've decided there's no worse better possible time to get into a giant strategy game than now.

I quite enjoyed Tropico 4, and the first Age of Empires back in the day. Soooo when I saw that Civilization has a couple of entries on sale right now, I figured yeah why not?

However I'd like to ask if anyone here has any experience with Civ4 and/or Civ5? I like the hex grid better from a visual standpoint, but have also read people think Civ4 is the highlight of the series (and it's cheaper).

Thoughts on which of the two would be the best for a newbie to the series? I'm leaning towards 4 currently since there's a complete version and it's less likely to throttle my pc lol.

I doubt Skyrim would change much with a remaster anyhow. I was watching a seminar on modular games and the way the build levels..... is pretty cookie cutter.

Out of curiosity, what is cookie cutter about them? I've only played Morrowind years ago of the series and mostly just ran around trying stupid cheat combinations (at one point I could jump over entire towns). So I've got no real conception of the level design in Elder Scrolls games, so just wondering what makes them kinda average?

Skyrim was praised a lot right, I might give it a shot on Switch eventually.

Hearing James read out those Kutar titles made them seem like accidental beat poetry.

Kutar my mother in an insane asylum!
Kutar the groaning saxophone!
Kutar the solitudes of skyscrapers and pavements!
Kutar the lone juggernaut!
Kutar the vast lamb of the middle class!
Kutar the crazy shepherds of rebellion!

Kutar the supernatural extra brilliant intelligent kindness of the soul.

It's not as frustrating as it seems. The game is pretty liberal when it comes to health and there is usually a decent amount laying around on flowers or grass. You can also kill a few enemies to get back up pretty easily.

Hmm okay that's reassuring. Still kinda sounds like some needless busiwork if you ask me, but not nearly as annoying I guess. Being crap at games has made me really appreciate Rayman Legends for example where you respawn almost instantly with very little setback. Kinda wish more games would head in that direction, but then again I'm not a designer so what do I know lol.

Interesting that the game is almost out after such a long time. I remember downloading the Nindies@Home demo.
I played another demo for it at PAX Aus last year, it seemed pretty good. I will probably buy it.

It says on the eShop you get a small discount (like 2 bucks) if you download it the first month with that Nindies @ Home thing on your account. Might be of interest to you.

Sorry Nickmitch, just getting my Bomberman practice in early. :(

Sounds cool, have been hoping this would be good. Restarting an area with half your health sounds like it'll get tedious extremely fast though... When I've already died/lost/whatever I don't really wanna have to retry with half as much health. Sounds like a recipe for frustration, but obviously I've not tried it yet so I hope to be wrong here!

I am utterly confused. But I did manage to nab "StarTropics" as my User ID.

Haven't really kept up with everything but aren't they just continuing Nintendo Network IDs? Why would everyone need to make a new one again? Differentiating between NNID, this (apparantly new?) account user thing, and an optional MyNintendo is a far cry from that hallowed single account structure.

I really hope Rocket League stays far, far away from Switch... Because it has all the trappings of something I would get very addicted to!

Assault Android Cactus is another good shout yeah, they were developing a Wii U version for a while I think, but it kept getting postponed. That final boss is absolutely brutal!

Could also imagine Severed being reworked with motion controls instead of stylus swipes, if the Joy-Con are truly precise enough? You'd have to make the hits land harder to not tire out players, but I see potential.

That said, I'd rather we see new indies instead of established ones or reworked ones. Would rather see something new cooked up by Drinkbox, Nifflas, Image & Form, Witchbeam, or the people behind Nova-111 than see (enhanced) ports.
Things like Snipperclips, while being a Nintendo game, are exciting precisely because they're new things on a new console (imo).

EDIT: oh aren't the people behind FTL working on something new based around Pacific Rim? Probably won't make it to Switch I guess, but it'd be cool.

Wow Steefosaurus, way to be a fucking dick and choose my second favorite game on the Wii U.

Yikes soz :( As a professional miiverse butt-portraitist I see the error of my ways. As such I've now selected one that surely isn't anyone's second favourite Wii U game, to atone for committed sins.

1266
Still, no reason we can't rehash all this again when that happens....

Just like the Mario Party developers amirite?!?!!?! Heeeeeeyoooooo up top!

If I'm getting blown up, it'll be in a barrel-blast explosion - Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze it is!

Is it really just the hard/hero mode though, or more something akin to a Master Quest dungeon rearrangement? If the latter, I could see why they would want to charge for that and wouldn't have a problem with it.

How likely is it truly that Xenoblade 2 will make a 2017 worldwide release? Even if they do a repeat of Chronicles X, which launched so late in december it was practically the new year already, it seems awful quick no?
What's the dev time on it, Xenoblade X released in April 2015 in Japan, so assuming the December western launch was purely because of localisation, that's still 2.5 years at most if they got started right away.

Maybe I'm overestimating how long it takes to develop these giant HD games, and I suppose Nintendo are adamant about releasing a couple of blockbuster titles in the first year, but I'm skeptical of this timeframe for now.

GameStop is getting a lot of crap for its Circle of Life sales shenanigans. A Reddit topic blew up and the story moved to the gaming press, such as on Kotaku.

Now, Mega64 has their funny (at least to me) and all too true take on how shitty GameStop treats its employees (from my own experience), but this time it's involving Circle of Life!

Haha that's pretty funny, though I must say the sales model employed here is a little perplexing. I understand that they make more money on used game sales than on new copies, but... Surely they make a profit on both? And some of those new copies you sell may eventually return to your store anyway as used copies which you can sell a second time?

I guess it's meant to boost their overall profit margins, but if the result is that employees feel pressured to lie to their customers... Maybe it's time to reconsider your store policies lol.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Run The Series: Mario Kart
« on: February 09, 2017, 10:04:35 AM »
Interesting to see that the Wii version is pretty well-liked here. I personally think it's the weakest one of all the versions I've played, especially as a follow-up to Double Dash. Didn't mind the removal of the two-riders so much and I liked that they expended the races to now have 12 cars going, but just visually it's rather muted in colour no? Double Dash was super vibrant and cartoony and I genuinely believe it looks better. Also liked its drifting mechanics more for some reason, it just felt more natural for some reason.

Kart Wii has some fun tracks like Bowser's Castle, the mall level, and that one high up in the trees. But then again they also had that weird team-based version of Battle Mode with way too large stages, the whole thing just never really clicked with me for some reason.

I'm gonna pick up #8 for Switch though I think, never played it on Wii U so everything will be brand new to me and the fact that it comes with 2 controllers for on the go seems perfect.

I have never played Puyo Puyo before, but after seeing that trailer, it seems to be the same as Mean Bean Machine, which I played recently on Sonic Mega Collection. Maybe I will like it then.
I already love Tetris, so having two games in one could make it more interesting.

Update: I just ordered Puyo Pop on ebay for my N-Gage. It was cheap and it will be here before Puyo Puyo Tetris, so it will be a good chance to try a game in the same series first.
<3 N-Gage.

Believe it or not, I knew no less than 2 people with an N-Gage. The original models too, where you had to remove the battery if you wanted to change gamecarts and hold it like a taco if you wanted to make phonecalls. The Tomb Raider game on it looked pretty crap imo, but I wanna say there was an Elder Scrolls on it or something similar? That one really impressed me, since my Nokia 3310 just had a version of Snake.

Tengami: This is another great Wii U game I forgot to mention earlier. Plays mostly like a point & click adventure game, I'm thinking it might've been designed with iOS in mind? The Wii U version adds some minor stuff like collecting pretty stamps to post on Miiverse with.

In this story you move through a gorgeous origami styled world with some similarities to environments in Paper Mario perhaps.
You can flip pages as if it's a storybook for example. Very chill music with low-pressure puzzles makes this game ideal for a quiet evening with a cup of tea. It won't last much longer than that quiet evening; I finished it in 1.5 hours, but for me that's a perfect session length. Very tranquil experience overall that I would highly recommend to destress with. 8/10
