General Gaming / Games Beaten, Completed, or Played in 2023
« on: January 03, 2024, 12:19:16 PM »
With 2023 officially over it is time to start another year of gaming. What better time then to post your records of games played, beaten, or completed. Personally I like to hear what system the games were played on, how long they took, whether you beat them any% or 100%, and if they were first plays or replays. Of course, feel free to post as little or as much as you want.

Again, these are just my short lists. Please comment below any games you want included in the list of nominations. Also let me know if you have questions about the categories or think a game should be included in a different category. Finally, we will try to implement nickmitch's "Backlogged Game of the Year". For that award we will just post replies to the polls to indicate which nominees are still on our backlog (i.e., we have not played them yet). The game backlogged by the most users will win the award.

I am hoping to start the voting December 1 so make sure to get in your nominees before then!

General Gaming / Shocktober 4: The Final Chapter
« on: October 01, 2023, 02:09:58 PM »
It's Shocktober again and time for our slightly spooky version of a "what have you been playing" forum topic.

When does this start?

Shocktober begins right now, and will last the entire month of October, ending after Halloween night.

What should I play?

Anything that falls under the classification of a "scary" game. Survival horror, action horror, a horror-themed FPS, anything with zombies, etc. In the interest of having fun, this can be more of a loose definition of what defines a scary game, and constitute anything that is more-or-less "spooky themed". Here are a few scary games coming out this month:
  • The Dark Pictures Anthology (Switch version)
  • Haunted House (2023 Remake)
  • Alan Wake 2

You don't have to pick up a new game to get into the Halloween spirit, consider playing some Luigi's Mansion multiplayer, a spooky course in Mario Kart or Mario Party, taking part in the Animal Crossing festivities, or just putting on a spooky costume and sharing a picture on the forums.

If you're not sure, just check out the previous years' threads
[2022] [2021] [2020].

You can think of this as another Backlaugust if you want -- You've probably got horror games in your backlog, and it's time to play them. How many games you want to play is up to you, whether that's just one game or a few games. Any platform, doesn't matter. They can be new games, old games. Even horror games you've already beaten long ago and want to replay. You don't have to choose all of your games up front; you can if you want, but it's fine to just take it one-game-at-a-time.

Who should participate?

Do you:
  • Enjoy scary games?
  • Have at least one horror game in your backlog?
  • Plan on buying a new horror game?
  • Really love Halloween?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you should do this!

The purpose of this is a little less about seeing how many games we can beat, but for everyone to share in the experience of playing something scary. A good horror game can be a tough thing to get all of the way through to the end, but with some moral support from the rest of the community that's going through the same thing, maybe we can all make it back into the light by November! That's what it comes down to -- having fun, and being scared shitless. And being scared shitless is a lot more fun when being scared shitless as a group.

One last thing -- for your fellow NWR-er who hasn't played every game, try using spoiler tags whenever possible for anything major that's story-related, or just in general anything that should not be spoiled.

General Gaming / 3rd Annual NWR Four on Four
« on: April 01, 2023, 12:10:28 PM »
Hey there forum fans, time to dig out those 3DOs, charge up those Game & Watches, plug in your PSVR2, and dust off the old Lynx. That's right, it's the fourth month of the year and thus time to kick off the 3rd annual Four on Four community event!

The basic idea is to complete four games from four different systems during the month of April. This will encourage us to play more games and as well as games on different systems. Feel free to modify the rules as you see fit. You could use the system the game was originally released on rather than the system you played it on. Instead maybe you just play four games on four different system without completing them. Personally, I am going to pick some games that I have already started and plan to finish in April

Just post the games you are playing and what system you are playing them on and have fun!

General Gaming / Visiting Japan: Games to Buy, Places to Visit?
« on: February 19, 2023, 10:46:31 AM »
I am planning to visit Japan this year and will be in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. I am planning to doing some game shopping, visiting arcades, and other video game related tourism. Does anyone have recommendations on the following:
  • Good arcades or used game stores in Tokyo
  • Which systems are region free (other than switch)
  • Some really good Japan-only physical games
  • Must visit video game related places in Japan
Thanks for any suggestions

« on: November 23, 2022, 12:11:17 PM »
Hey forum users, you may have seen The Game Awards release their nominations for the current year. Well why let them have all the fun. I say we hold our own awards right here in the forums. I was thinking that each award will be a poll-based topic that folks can vote in (Mods let me know if there is a problem with this). I was going to keep the number of awards small this year to see how it goes. I am thinking of doing it based on the platform e.g., Best Nintendo Game, Best PlayStation Game, Best Xbox game. In addition, we can have a Best Multiplatform game to include everything else. Here is a short list of nominees:

Best Nintendo Game
  • Bayonetta 3
  • Live A Live
  • Triangle Strategy
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus
  • Pokémon Scarlet/Violet
  • Splatoon 3
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3
  • Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
  • Nintendo Switch Sports

Best PlayStation Game
  • God of War: Ragnorok
  • Horizon: Forbidden West
  • Stray
  • Grand Turismo 7
  • The Last of Us - Part 1
  • Sifu
  • Rollerdrome

Best Xbox Game
  • Scorn
  • Tunic
  • As Dusk Falls
  • Immortality
  • Pentiment

Best Multiplatform Game
  • Elden Ring
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II
  • Cult of the Lamb
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge
  • Two Point Campus
  • FIFA 23
  • NBA 2K23
  • Overwatch 2
  • A Plague Tale: Requiem
  • Sonic Frontiers
  • Atari 50
  • OlliOlli World
  • Persona 5 Royale
  • Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin
  • Soul Hackers 2

Don't see a game that you want included? Just reply to this topic and include anything I missed. Also, correct me if any of these did not come out in 2022 or they are in the wrong category. The voting will start early December and run for two weeks. Then we will announce the winners. I hope you can join in the fun!

Nintendo Gaming / The Top 10 3DS Games (According to MetaCritic)
« on: October 26, 2022, 10:25:20 AM »
Here is the "Best of 3DS games" list according to Metacritic. The Metascore is shown in parenthesis after the title. Post below to discuss your experiences with these games.

Do you agree with this ranking?

What missing games are in your 3DS top ten?

Which game on this list is your favorite? Least favorite?

Did you play these on another console? Which one?

Any of these on your backlog?

Will any console have more than 3 Zelda's in the top ten?

Which console should we look at next?
@Adrock - Metacritic does not cover any games before N64

I used the Best of GameCube games according to Metacritic, ranked by Metascore to come up with this list. I thought it would be fun to discuss our experiences with these games and whether we agree with them being the best of GameCube or not.
After you vote in the poll, post about:
Which game on this list is your favorite? Least favorite?
Did you play these on another console? Which one?
Any of these on your backlog?
What's that Zelda Collector's Edition?
Should I run a similar poll for another console? Which one?

General Gaming / Shocktober III: Season of the Witch

Hopefully Pokepal is cool with me starting this up :D.

Shocktober begins right now, and will last the entire month of October, ending after Halloween night.

What should I play?

Anything that falls under the classification of a "scary" game. Examples of games that count as Horror:

Anything remotely spooky, scary, or Halloweeny. You getting Bayonetta 3? That counts. You planning to play some mutiplayer Luigi's Mansion 3? You sucked yourself right into a game that counts for Shocktober. Are you just planning to do the Halloween event in Animal Crossing? Come on in. You could even pick a spooky game from the Switch SNES online games and sign up to play it online with someone on BShy's new thread. As we prepare for the return of the umbra witch, let's all have some scary fun  ;D.

Welcome Premium Panel Members to NWR's exclusive TV streaming service focus panel. I want to thank each of you for volunteering for such a bold initiative and I am pleased to say that all your credit cards passed our check and now have a substantial hold on them. That is just temporary of course as we decide the fate of the streaming wars right here. See folks, the TV landscape has changed, and with nobody watching cable anymore the data from existing ratings organizations is unreliable. Since the NWR forums are so popular and active, it was obvious that these folks are the real influencers of the day and so we value your opinion and your financial commitment. We will now ask you a series of questions (rounds) and all you have to do is answer by selecting one of the streaming services from the list available.

Coming soon to your TV: Safe Words 19
Hey there forum users! Do you like watching TV? Of course you do. And with so many streaming services available you obviously need some help deciding which ones to subscribe to and which ones to steal use through your friends account.
Lucky for you, the administration at NWR is forming a very exclusive panel to decide which streaming services will get bombed off the airwaves and which one will reign supreme. How exclusive you ask? Well you will need to sign up below for our special limited time trial of Safe.TV Words+ to find out. As a member of this panel you will be asked to select your favorite streaming service from the lists provided. So what are you waiting for...sign up now!
Premium Panel Members:
  • Order.RSS
  • Khushrenada
  • NWR_insanolord
  • Mop it up
  • MASB
  • Luigi Dude
  • BeautifulShy
  • TOPHATANT123
  • Stratos
  • nickmitch
  • ShyGuy
Terms and Conditions

All panel members agree to the following terms and conditions
HOW TO PLAY
After sign-ups are closed, the panelists are randomly assorted into a selection rotation. In order, they are given a list of possible streaming services to subscribe to and must select one of them. Unbeknownst to them, one of these streaming services will bomb and take all subscribers with it. If you selected that streaming service when it was your turn to choose, then you lost. That streaming service will no longer be available, and a new one will be selected by the panelist that went right before the bomb was selected. If none of the remaining panelists choose the bomb service, then the panelist who selected it to start the round is forced to choose their own bomb service and is eliminated. This process is repeated until only one streaming service remains and is declared the winner. The order of players chosen will decided by the order they sign up, so sign up right away.
Message reminders
The administration will send panelists a pm alerting them to the fact the survey has begun. After that, it is up to the panelists to remember to check in on their own unless they notify the administration to send them a reminder when it is their turn.
Waiting for a selection
A generous time of 2 days (48 hours) is given for a panelist to select a service. If they've requested for me to send them a reminder when it is their turn, a message will be sent to alert them of that fact once it is their turn and 24 hours before their time to choose is up. If a choice has not been made by the end of the total 48 period, the panelist will be automatically given the bomb service and removed from the panel. The 48 hours begins from the timestamp of the post I make in this thread asking for their selection in the round.
