$400, 80 Gig, PS3's Backwards Compatible?
« on: October 11, 2008, 01:58:10 PM »
Yea, i am looking into buying a PS3, within the next month. I was wondering if anyone knew if the current 400 dollar PS3's were backwards compatible or not. Thanks in advance, despite me most likely thanking you again. lol

I don't think they're backwards-compatible at all.  Not even in software.

Thanks, i was unsure, My friend told me there is something you could buy on the PSN that allows you to make your PS3 Backward's Compatible.

I was doubtful on his assumption though, so thanks.

If i really want to replay Kingdom Hearts, i either got to get my Playstation 2 fixed or get a new one now. :)

You could also get an older model off of eBay.  I'm sure you could find a sealed 60GB original model.

Sony might be releasing a software emulator for PS2 games...but who knows when.
I think it says on the box, 'No Hispanics' " - Jeff Green of EA

I know a store that still has a 80GB MGS4 bundle in stock and those are BC.

It's ok, thanks for the help. I am sticking with the 80 Gig, for $400. Sony will most likely have an emulator out. My friend went on and still claims that there is one for download in the PSN. but i can never be sure. So hopefully by end of next week i will have a PS3. And be able to play all my old games that have gathered dust due to a broken PS2.

Thanks again :)

I don't think Sony cares about backwards compatibility anymore.

The only download that remotely relates to that is a patch that allows PS2 games that required the PS2 harddrive to function and access the PS3 harddrive as if it was a PS2 harddrive.

Flames is right.  I can 100% assure you that there is no "PS2 Software Emulator" download on PSN.  It doesn't exist.

If I were you, I'd look for one of the older bundles.

Try independently owned game stores as they may have a few left in stock. There were a few hints from SCEE and other sources that software emulation may come soon but that came out the same time a rumor was floating around that sony will start offering download-able PS2 games.

I think the reason for the BC drop is that they plan to resell PS2 games on PSN in the future.

Most likely.  But hey, I looked at it this way.  I wanted BC too, but then I realized I can already play 90% of PS2 titles on my Gamecube/Wii.  As far as the other 10%, well, there really weren't any titles I HAD to play, so having a new 80gig just made sense, I didn't want to chance a used one off the street.

My Wal*Mart still has 80 GB Metal Gear Bundles in stock. :)

Not really, the reason is because there was actual PS2 hardware in there removing that hardware allowed them to make the PS3 cheaper. Wii and PS3 did BC with hardware, Wii with slowing down the hardware to GC speeds and shutting off the Wii components, PS3 by invoking the PS2 hardware that was inside it.

The original PS3s had actual PS2 hardware inside it.  They they switched to software BC to cut costs, and on these newer PS3s they've cut BC entirely.

Sony's biggest mistake was creating a PS3 at such an expensive price. Gimping PS2 support as a means of lowering price was also a mistake, because now the majority of your fanbase can't trade up towards your latest system, so they wind up choosing the system with the lowest entry cost which is either the 360 or Wii.

But anyway, I got the MGS4 bundle and I've had great luck with it. BC is solid and the machine is great.

What Silks said... Removing the hardware BC could be called a cost move, but software?  That doesn't make any sense.... unless they are opening the doors to resell the games.

The "software emu" version actually emulated only a part of the PS2 hardware, the other parts were still inside the hardware.

What I didn't understand is why they didn't dump BC in one shot.  Having the "Software Emu" version only to later discontinue that model as well never made sense to me.

Oh Schnap!  I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast, but how is this for a deal?!

I just got my billl in the mail from Sony, and the final total for a brand new 80gig PS3 w/ shipping was $260 after tax!!  It was supposed to be $310 for the Sony Card I signed up for, but they gave me a $150 credit instead of the $100 credit.

Guess that means my wife has to allow me another game then...... 8)
