Xbox 360 is the name, Concaved console plays the games
« on: April 13, 2005, 02:34:14 PM »
I know the title is cheesy but....

anyway GamesIndustry.biz has stated that details have been revealed
Quote

The name of Xbox's successor is Xbox 360, we can confirm, and the design of the machine is indeed a concave shape.
Quote

As for the logo of the console, it is described as a simple, round nexus with "Xbox 360" written inside it. Previous rumours had simply the numbers "360" in the disc. This branding tends to suggest that we can expect to see "360" appearing after many game names, as happened with the Nintendo 64.

Do we have any artist that would like to come up with a mock-up??

Don't forget that
Quote

Previous rumours had put the console as light silver, although fresh information says the final design may be white. OurColony does suggest a platinum-white colour scheme for the hardware.

"Xbox 360" is a stupid name.  It was probably decided on using the same focus groups that determined that a ridiculously huge controller was a good idea.  It doesn't flow at all.  Ecks-bahcks-three-six-tee.  Bleh.

Though "a British source who is privy to Microsoft's marketing documents for the console" sounds pretty wishy-washy.  It's got a "friend told me" kind of vibe.  Though the concave design and way it stands up vertically matches that picture that most of us assumed was a dev kit.  Maybe that's what it is and the "source" is going off of that.

I wouldn't be surprised if 360 was the final name though.  It's such a DUMB name that it kind of has to be real, you know?  No rumour starter would come up with something so lame.  Xenon, NeXtBox, Xbox Next, Xbox 2 all sound very generic and fanboyish like anyone could come up with it.  No one making up sh!t would come to the conclusion of using "360" as part of the name.  It doesn't even make any sense.

Maybe the 360 is just to help make the point that its not doing anything new.  When you spin around 360 degrees you end up facing the same way, but dizzy.  So the new XBOX will be the same type of thing, but dizzy.....

And I cant wait for Halo 3....60...
It may be simple, but it ain't easy.

I agree, in trying too hard to be "hip" and "cool" they have settled on the worst console name in history (if this turns out to be true).

First of all, there is no point to the name.  Think of most console names and how they have naturally either shown a progression in technology (nintendo 64's 64 bit), shape (as in the gamecube or sp), or simply the natural indicator of a successor (PS2, SNES).  What does the 360 indicate?  Unless it's exactly 360 times more powerful then the xbox or it's design is circular it doesn't make much sence.

Imagine having to say, "lets go play my xbox 360."  A bit long winded no?  Plus I'd imagine it's lameness would get annoying after not too long.  You could, however, just say "lets go play my 360" but that just makes it's rediculousness even more apparent.  I guess a lot of people will not question it at first but after so long people will wonder, "why on earth that name?"

I don't know, maybe I'm in a lousy mood because I'm in the middle of an all-night homework marathon...

Names don't matter. If they did, the Gamecube and Playstation would have outright failed. People aren't going to say "hey! lets go play with the Microsoft XBox 360!', they're going to abbreviate it.

Simple:  Xbox.

I think it's safe to say people will continue to call the new Microsoft console Xbox.  Much like when you said to your friend "Hey, you want to come to my house and play some Nintendo?" back in 1989 you meant NES, but when you said the same thing in 1995, you clearly meant SNES.

U know you have a deffinate point here.  I do still pop in some N64 games from time to time and when I say Nintendo that can get confusing but to solve this I almost always simply refur to the actual game I want to play anyway.  This all seems a little trivial now writing it after a good nights rest...although I still believe xbox 360 is the lamest name ever...even if it won't make that big of a differnce in reality

Nope, it's a 360° turn from their previous direction. On another note, Nintendo should say something like "Yeah, so MS has a 360, so what? We've got 1080!". I mean, 720 or 1080 at least have a meaning in relation to that HD stuff but 360?

BTW, if it's abbreviated to 360 it'll be really ironic. The IBM 360 was the first system to implement Out-of-Order execution, the XB360 apparently won't do that. Also, now we'll get all of those IBM/360 jokes instead of IBM PS/2 jokes.

BTW:  Those pics only had two controller ports if anyone cared to look at that--Hopefully MS sticks with 4 inputs.  Actually it doesn't have any--those two ports were for MC--so it's going have wireless controllers as default?

Rare has had to be working on something these past couple of years. Expect PD2 at launch plus one or two other good games... I think Microsoft is trying to do the same thing they did with teh first xbox, which is have one FPS killer app for launch. I doubt bungie will have another Halo by Xmas (though that would possibly explain why H2's campaign eats dick)

that X360 design looks like the big ass X that Msoft used for the first xbox's demos... which makes me believe this is the final design

Last I heard, a 360° turn means you go in the same direction as before - totally pointless. Its more likely to mean the traversal of 360° as covering the entire spectrum of something trendy, like nutmeg. I'll wait for Hammertime 360 before I get excited about the Xbox Spinna.

And this mockup (not the blol one) is bad - the 6 on the 360 is upside down for starters. But I'd expect something similar to that design when it finally appears...

Rare has stated so many times that it's NOT working on Killer Instinct that it's not funny.  Now I admit it's been a while since the last time Rare said it wasn't working on Killer Instinct, so I wouldn't be surprised if the game is now in the works (maybe we'll even see some shots this E3) but it won't be out in time for launch.  I predict Perfect Dark 0 at launch and Kameo in 2006.

Umm, yeah, Xbox 360 design!  I think it's pretty nice, better than the existing Xbox, but I'm not keen on the "vents" all over the top, and I don't think it fits in with a home entertainment system like the last one did - which was supposedly to the advantage of PS2 and Xbox, even though GameCube looks way better than either of them.  I like silver, but actual photos I saw of the system on gamesarefun.com almost looked PC beige.  Ugly.

Microsoft Upset Over Xbox 360 Leak

Gee, I wonder why? If you missed it, an image was leaked that showed the Xbox 360 design in all its glory; you can find the pictures here. According to Internet rumors, Microsoft now believes the leak came from the MTV production staff. Supposedly, an actual console wasn't going to be showed, just the render that is being passed around. In any case, a couple other images hit the net: this one showing what appears to be a 64MB memory card inserted into the system and this side shot of the console with a 40GB hard drive attached.

More Xbox 360 Rumors: Halo 2.5, Launch Lineup

Okay, grain of salt time. IGN's rumor column has a few intriguing tidbits. First, the biggie. Halo 2.5 will be available launch day and it will come pre-loaded on the hard drive. It will feature high-res textures, widescreen res, 720p, and cut-scenes that don't feature LOD pop-in. I would assume it'd also have all the new maps. If true, smart move; the $399 console with the hard drive has a pack-in game and everyone now has a reason to buy the hard drive separately. The other rumor is that the system will have 40 titles available the first month. 15-20 at launch, and ten more each two weeks. Some names being tossed around are Perfect Dark Zero, Test Drive, the new Need for Speed, PGR3, Burnout 4, and a Namco racing title. Can't ever have enough racers, apparently.

just a little second sourcing & rumor back-up

but xbox releasing @ $399.00 w/ hard drive & Halo 2.5 pre-loaded, I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume $299.00 w/o hdd.

Also why so many racing titles @ launch, and 40 launch window titles!!!! thats impressive if true.

"but xbox releasing @ $399.00 w/ hard drive & Halo 2.5 pre-loaded, I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume $299.00 w/o hdd"

What a rip-off.  The Xbox came with a hard drive for $300 so it shouldn't cost an extra $100 to get the hard drive version.  Halo 2.5 is a total rip off too.  Hey thanks for buying an unfinished version of the game.  Now buy a $400 console to get the REAL version.  That's the problem with taking such a huge loss the first time around.  You have to raise prices to make a profit next time.

The multiple console price points idea that MS and Sony are both rumoured to be going with have a huge flaw: the barebones model is as expensive as last gen's "full" console launch prices.  No one is saving any money by buying the cheaper model.  The options are "expensive" and "even more expensive".  This can give Nintendo a legitmate advantage in price.  Last gen the Cube wasn't quite cheap enough to make a difference but if you can get the Rev with a hard drive and all the essential features included for less than the barebones 360 and PS3 models that's going to make a bigger impact.  How is MS going to justify the extra $100 for a hard drive if Nintendo includes a hard drive and charges at most the same price as the barebones 360 model?

40 titles though is unbelievable.  And by that I mean not believable.  I doubt there will be that many.  There will either be a lot of junk and PS2/Xbox ports (probably what EA's titles initially will be) or many of those titles will be delayed or cancelled outright.  Still the goal of having so many titles is a good one to have and at the very least if MS puts in the effort to try to get that many titles the result will still be a fair amount of titles even if it's not quite 40.  I doubt Nintendo will even come close to have many launch period games (in fact I'm worried they'll have less than 10).  Just the fact that MS feels that having a lot of titles early on is important will get a good word of mouth going and will please fans.

Personally, I'm convinced since this generation that price doesn't make a huge difference.  Granted, PS2 and Xbox had DVD players, which were becoming a hot item at the time, but then again, if Nintendo has the same features this time around, how is it going to be profitable and keep its price lower than the other two?  Only if they're ripping consumers off, and I don't think Microsoft is ripping people off...I think it was just being really nice with the Xbox.  Will there be a feature on Xbox 360 or PS3 that makes them stand out the way DVD did?  I don't think so, but DVR could come close.

As for racing games, I think we see so many early on because it's easy to make them.  That doesn't mean it's easy to make a good one, but compared to adventure-like games where people expect lots of "moves", artificial intelligence, varied terrain, and of course a story and characters, racing games maybe require a little less planning and careful design.  Throw together a bunch of cityscapes and put in tons of car models and lots of people are happy.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Yeah, I hate .5
New features like, less bugs??!?!?!
I was never a fan of the Halo series, and the LOD bug and other graphical shortcuts didn't improve my view of them any.
I mean...it's a console game, PC games ship with bugs normally because of the diffrence between hardware that is impossible to predict, so patches are ok for PC, but there is no reason a console game should have a version number past x.0 much less x.5, apparently if they jump past .4 you have to pay for it. Then again...the first Xbox is basically a PC anyway...

SPOnG received word that this is the version of the pad as shipped with the long-awaited updated SDK units for Xbox 360, with some studios receiving upgrade packs of late.

The button is named the 'Xbox 360 Button'. Really. And will be the defining difference between Xbox of old and the progression of the console into an ever-growing Live community.

“It gives you instant access, globally, from whatever you’re doing, to your Xbox360 menus,†explained our source, speaking under terms of strict anonymity. “They’re going to show it at the E3 conference in all its glory, but in a nutshell, if you’re watching a DVD, you’re still signed into your Friends list, so you can still be invited into games, discussions and other Live events. You’re always connected to the community. It’s like the interactive button for digital TV. And this really is the key factor to bear in mind with the upgraded Live system. It will be a lot more like a digital TV experience, just more interactive. Microsoft is looking at the viability of Live competing with the set-top box and this Xbox 360 button in the key to this.â€

I was looking at the rumored price and really if Xbox360 does everything it says it does then $399 isn't a bad price for the system.  Its basically a powerful computer without the windows OS, and specifically designed for games.  The problem is when you try to sell the system without the harddrive for $299.  I think the added benefit of the hard drive is definately worth $100, but why split your market up?  $299 isn't even at mass market price to reach all audience.

If I had to predict the price I would say we were looking at $249 without harddrive and $349 with harddrive.

However I don't understand why MS won't just release it $399 one system with the hard drive make the money off early adopters then when the Nintendo and Sony systems are released drop the price to be more competitive.  When you drop the price take Halo 2.5 off the harddrive and include it as a download game or something for an extra $25 dollars.

That would make everyone happy, early adopters, and late purchasers.  Also it wouldn't split the market up.

"Free Xbox Live weekends"

That's pretty neat though I think having the free period on weekends isn't really fair to the "Gold" users.  That's kind of the peak time and I imagine the servers would be more busy as a result.  So if you pay for Live shouldn't you get the best time periods for yourself?  If a "Gold" player wants to play without "Silver" players eating up resources they have to limit themselves to weekdays.

In fact I don't really see many advantages to paying for the Gold service anyway.  It's obviously better but it's not that much better.  Personally if I bought an Xbox 360 I would just stick with the Silver package.  Still I think the idea of having a barebones free service is cool but there needs to be more incentive to upgrade.

I think it's cool how access to MMOs doesn't require the Gold service.  PSO on the Xbox was such BS.  You had to pay for Live AND pay extra for PSO.

Ian Sane:  All MS really has to do is give Gold Members free bonus maps, and downloadable Demos and it would be worth the upgrade.

But I agree.  MS needs to do something to make the upgrade worth while otherwise people will stay Silver members and then MS will once again lose a ton of money on this network.

Completely Barebones online play is what I want.  I want something that connects very easily and find people for me to play simply, and pretty much thats it.

I don't really like the reputation idea. I just want to go online and play someone, without worrying about what they think of me. If I want to play with someone trustworty, I'll play with a friend, or just deal with it.

I've had a bad experiance with reputations before. In the game C&C Generals, you have a win/loss ratio (like alot of games) but (I could be wrong about this) nearest I could tell, that was the only option, everyone can see your win/losses even if it's not a ladder game. I tried multiplayer a couple of years after the game was out so mine was 0/0 and no one wanted to play with the 'noob' because it would damage their record, nearest I could tell, the only way to play 2v2 maps in my condition was to play nothing but 1v1 maps, get good, reset my record somehow, and start again with a clean slate.

Reputations might in theory, help against annoying players and general jackasses, but it would also mean that players are less likely to hand their controller over to their friends for a couple levels. It would damage their reputation. On the other hand, it may work like the new Battlefield 2 that isn't out yet, where they praise good players, but don't punish bad players, sorta like a win/loss ratio exept without the losses counted.

I am beginning to realize that Sony and Nintendo's system won't be vastly more powerful than the Xbox.  Think about it.  All three companies have started designing their systems at the same time.  Microsoft is just launching theirs earlier.  And 6 months or so is not that much more time for prices to drop and technology to jump to be vastly superior.

Unless this Sony Cell technology is light years ahead of its time all 3 systems will be similar in power.

I also wouldn't be surprised if once again MS is taking a lose on the console for a few months to make sure they at least similar technical specs to the competition.

I don't believe power is going to play as much of a role anymore anyway.  Maybe this is just me, but I've been seeing some next-gen-ish stuff popping up over the last year...Doom 3, the new Unreal engine, that Dark Sector demo...and I'm not that impressed.  They look beautiful, no doubt, but it's nothing like the last-gen transition, where the games went from looking blocky and fake to having a good degree of realism.  The graphics look great, but they aren't taking my breath away like the first demos of the PS2 and GameCube did.

Now, if the leap from current-gen consoles to next-gen ones isn't even that great, then the leap between this year's console and next year's consoles is going to be even less noticeable.  I think power will only matter as a bragging right.  Of course, maybe I'm in the minority with the opinion that next-gen systems aren't that much better graphically.   We'll see.

Edit: On the same topic, some screens of what looks like DOA4 for Xbox 360 have leaked, and are on gamesarefun right now.  And a lot of people are really ticked.  The game looks incrementally better than the previous DOAs, and I bet the final product will look noticeably better, but a lot of people are saying it could be done on Xbox; in fact there's some confusion if maybe it is an Xbox game, but I'm pretty sure it's 360.  Decent shots, but I have to agree that they don't impress like they should.

*When you watch DVD, some stuff in the console will automaticly shut down - so its more quiet.
*You load the batteries on the controllers up via USB-cable on Xbox. You can also use simple batteries.
*The round thingy on the controller = "The ring of light". Its actually a screen, which says if there are any updates on Xbox Live. Downl. content and such. It also says which controllers there are in your hands, which number.
*Rallisport Challenge 3 will be on Xbox 360.
*The Darkness from swedish Starbreeze (Riddick).
*Peter Moore confirms Halo 3. Release this year.

I'll wrote Ghost Recon 3-info soon. Now I'll write down Peter Moore and J Allard interview.

Allard says:
*There will be face plates, to change. There will be one in colfiber (+spelling).
*By preventing piracy they will push more and more on Xbox Live.

Peter Moore says:
(strange) *THIS time we will have more than 1 million users. Does that mean that there wont be any transfer of the Xbox 1 users? Or that there wasnt over 1 million on Xbox 1?
*Nothing new about Square, nothing to be announced @ E3. But he will be surprised if there are NO Square-game on Xbox 360.

Going for Ghost Recon 3 now. There is alot of info, and I posted the most important over. I RESERVE myself for missunderstandings, cause I'm not THAT good in danish. Just ask me and I will tell you more about it.

Ghost Recon 3:
Okey, first of all. THIS ONE LOOKS HOT. Hot. HOT. HOT. GR 360 oh man you guys.

Oh man.

*Just some info about the story, bla bla. The PC-version is developed by the Deathrow-developers, so that the Red Storm Ent. cant concentrate on the Xb 360 and Xbox-version.

________

The looks:
*Xbox 360 looks just like the leaked pictures. Its not grey like on Our Colony, its white. But it can be changed.
*The controller seems to have 2 rear buttons and 2 triggers, not sure.
*A, B, C, Y, Back, Start.
*There is a picture of "Burning Sky". Seems like you can shut down the Xbox via the controller, by pushing "X" at that screen.
*The Xbox itself has wireless network thingy installed.
*Webcam in 1280-resolution.
*You can put pictures from a digital camera in it
*It supports, the machine:

1080i
5.1 Dolby Digital
Custom Soundtracks of course
20 gb of harddrive, can be upgraded
Memory card, at least 64 mb
3 USB Ports
*Morrowind Oblivion will be released this year.
*About NBA 2k6, they saw a demo of it.
"Lebron James jumped up, and when he touched the grand all of the body shook. All the muscles moved realistic, EVERYTHING on the body.
*Nothing special about PGR3.
*Gears of War to be the best looking game, for a long long time.
*Dimitri, Peter Molyneux latest game, COULD be released on Xbox 360. Rumours.
*Call Of Duty 2 on Xbox 360, as we already knew.
*The Ghost Recon 3-article is actually wroten by this TXB-dude who went to Big Blue Box to play Fable. I am really really sorry I dont remember your name.

**THATS IT** I think
I'll read thru it again and see what I've missed. I'll try to answer your questions by reading this article.

Just some final stuff:
*Something Microsoft Vision will be on Xbox 360. You will see TV on your Xbox. AND at the same time Play DVDs AND surf on the internet. At the same time?!?! wtf?
While all this you can get invites to games, friend requests, mail. MS is hoping that 50% of the 360-owners will buy Live. Right now, ~8% uses it.
*In the middle of a game, by pushing a button you will get directly to the dashboard.

Oh, and finally and most important: J Allards game of the Xbox 360 is "Fisher Price Nuclear Plant".

Oh, and of course: Thousand thanks to the magnificant (+spelling) danish magazine Gamereactor which I took the info from. They rock, and so does Nexus1000. Mostly because he is pretty. And he has Britney as an avatar. In black hair.

I think you're more turned off by the art direction in these games.  Team Ninja seems to like its plastic-y models, and the Ghost Recon game seems a little barren.  If anything, this shows that art direction will play an even bigger role compared to hardware in the next generation for good-looking games.

If every launch game looks like these, then Xbox 360 will get labeled the "dettached-looking" system, much like PS2 is the "dark-looking" system, DC is the "plastic-looking" system and GC is the "bright colors" system.

Those DOA pics look good but there's not that noticable of a jump.  The edges are clearly smoother.  It does look better and it does look great but not that much better.  Of course DOA Ultimate looked exceptionally good in the first place so it's hard to compare things.  The Ghost Recon screens look nice too but nothings wowing me.  But then like TYP said I hate the art direction of games like that so it's never going to impress me.

Looking at these screens though it becomes clear to me that it's too soon for a new Xbox.  It looks better but not enough to justify a new console.  I have a feeling that the PS3 and Rev are going to cream this thing graphically.  Retro for example will have better hardware to work with and they have AMAZING art direction.

But I'll give MS credit for giving the fans what they want.  It's a lot more of the same but there's no worry that Xbox fans won't like what they're given.  With Nintendo doing something supposedly different we don't know if we're going to like what they do.  But then without offering anything new MS could get screwed if Nintendo's idea catches on.  It's all very interesting since both companies are going with completely different strategies and realistically if one succeeds the other has a good chance failing.  The approaches are so different.

As I expected, fighting games are easily made to be pretty (very few on-screen characters, less objects that "think", and the backgrounds are mostly fluff; polygons are easy to throw around and distribute).  It's also an example of how we're steadily reaching that era of "diminishing returns" in graphic quality.

Yeah, art direction is becoming more & more important as far as visual "wow" factor is concerned.

No, I like Tecmo, tons, Wish they worked on Nintendo.

My point is, compare Dead or Alive 1 on the Saturn to Dead or Alive 2 on the Dreamcast, its an incredible jump.

Now compare this, to Dead or Alive Ultimate on the Xbox... Incredible jump? not so much...

Microsoft is jumping the gun on the hardware race, but if their games dont look that good then Sonys Hype Machine will smoke them real badly just like they did the inferior looking Dreamcast.

Ghost Recon 3 on the other hand looks significantly better than GR2...

Ghost Recon for some reason actually looks worse to me than Republic Commando. The minor technical upgrade (main character's weapon looks nice in that one picture, and trees look pretty cool) is offset by a complete lack of artistic style.

The only difference I can see in DOA4 is the shiny pants some of the characters have.

99 nights is Riddick/Chaos Theory models, just a whole lot of them at once... I like. It seems that's all the next gen is going to be good for... generating lots of characters.

It seems to me that if you have a capable PC, all you're really getting from the Xbox 360 is more characters onscreen.

If these are exemplary of first generation X360 games, my interest is already on hold until the second generation of games.

Edit: The main character's sword clips through the ground in 99N. For some reason that thoroughly pisses me off.

Actually the graphics are really about what I expected.  There is alot more detail than you first perceive.  But these stills don't tell the story.  It really depends how it animates.  If DOA4 animates all the clothing and hair with real physics and weight (including wrinkles in the clothing) then this game's graphics are simply amazing and utterly breathtaking.  If the clothes and hair only partially animated then its not quite as impressive and a total yawn.

The biggest problem with getting graphics more realistic is you begin to notice all the minor details more.  The characters don't feel as real as they look.  With Cartoon characters you really don't have that problem, because your brain recognises them as cartoons and forgives the flaws more.

Isn't this the same game that appeared in IGN's article about SK using the Unreal Engine 3?  Looking at the Gears of War screens a couple posts above, I can't readily accept those as 360 screenshots given what we've seen from Doa4, Ghost Recon, and Ninety-nine Nights, Full Auto, Kameo, and Condemned (i'll disregard PerfectDumpZero for now).

from the SK article
I think this is running off the Unreal Engine 3, tooled for PC (since Gears of War is also in-dev for PC), and not necessarily 360.

Man, PDZero looks like ass.  Kameo could have been done on the Cube.

HD revolution my ass.

The controller is just an improved version of current generation controllers.  Why are they not thinking about doing something original and inspirational.  At least as an option.  They don't even have one track ball or scroll wheel.  The shoulder buttons can not be used comfortably along with the triggers at the same time (the digital buttons should have been scroll wheels and there should have been a set of middle finger digital buttons beneath the triggers so that all functions could be used at maximum efficiency).  Why in god's name do they need a dpad for next generation games?

I hope Nintendo's controller takes a crap all over the Xbox360's controller.

Is anyone here going to pay $360 for "better graphics" and more potential power not shown in games for two years.  Seventy dollar games?  Standard LIVE support?  Non standard harddrive?  We havn't even seen the best looking games of current generation hardware yet.  What about Collosus on PS2, Zelda on Cube, Conker on Xbox?  MS is abandoning their current fanbase looking to claim the gamers they failed to reach with the first Xbox, the PS2 gamers.  MS must feel it is the right time to intice them, but I think it will all prove too early and rushed, and E3 will show to be a microcosm of how this next war will play out.  MS shows their goods days before E3 and then E3 arrives and Nintendo and Sony cover MS up like cat poop in the litter box.  Did MS name this console after the outrageous price the early launch will cause or the $360 million dollars they obviously wasted on RARE.  PDZero has been in development for like five years on three consoles and it looks soulless.  It makes Dark Sector on the PS3 look great.

The really dumb thing about this is, I still don't really know what the true capabilities of the hardware are. Because most of the stuff shown here is bullshit.

*Most* of the imagery here is from software that's allready in development for the PC, and will be convenient to port to 360, and the remainder is lies. Like the Madden video, or this 'shot' from PGR3

So there's in my humble opinion very little here that is is media truly taken from 360 hardware.

Even If some of it is genuinely 360 software, most of it is dull as dishwater. I'm so disheartened by this industry right now.

That's good.  Controllers are supposed to be function not original.  MS saw what worked with the Xbox controller and changed a few thing to try to improve it.  Having a d-pad is good because digital control is not inferior to analog control.  It's just a different way to play.  And what do you need scrollwheels and junk for?

Adding new options is good but removing existing ones is bad.  If the d-pad is gone I don't care what's added instead, the controller is junk because it can't play older style games.  It's inflexible and thus is worthless as a controller.  In order for Nintendo's controller to take a crap on the 360 controller it has to have what the 360 has plus more.  If it's just different it won't be better.  In fact it could be worse if it's too different.

I know where you're coming from with the functionality issue, but it is seperate from the reason they kept the basic design of the SNES controller.  A more advanced controller can do nothing but be more functional than present designs.  For example, even if they kept the traditional face buttons and dpad, didn't make the "360 button" a track ball with digital clicking, and didn't make middle finger buttons so we could use the shoulder functions for without having to use our middle fingers on the trigger for anymore than a second.  Even if they did all that and just added a scroll wheel with a digital clicking either above the trigger on each side or between the middle finger button and the trigger like a traditionally positioned mouse wheel.  It would make gaming much more fluid.  The options opened by having two extra shoulder buttons that can scroll are many.  You can scroll through menus deciding what weapon you want before clicking on it.  You can rotate the camera with on button.  They could be made double functioning using the clicking in other games.  If the wheels where big enough you could just combine the trigger with the wheel so there are fewer buttons to keep up with.

A trackball offers the option for mouse control.  It is basically the same control you would get from using a real gyro inside of a controller or helmet.  You wouldn't have to manually move the ball inside the device because uses its technology to glide along inside the confines of the gear.  A track ball requires you to operate it with you thumb.  It would be best if MS at least offered one option to compete with what Nintendo's controller might do.

Nintendo might use up to three gyros, or haptics, or gyros and haptics.  They may put a track ball with digital clicking on each side of the controller.  There are plenty of innovations that can be made to the controller.  MS just is not thinking, or their just thinking like Sony.

Also, I like that even the people EA are tired of where things are going.

And PDZero should be better looking for a game that has been in development for five years.

I do agree with Nemo that with each generation you really need to try and advance the controller.  Specially when you aren't providing a graphical step like the 3D generation did.  A controller advancement would allow games to feel new and special again for your system.

Quote

The nifty clips of video games supporting Microsoft's new Xbox 360 console are running on Apple machines, Microsoft confirmed on Friday.

"We purchased a number of Apple G5's because very specific hardware components of the G5 allow developers to emulate some of the technology behind future Xbox products and services," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement. "This is an interim development tool that will be replaced with a more powerful and comprehensive solution later."

The current systems shown at product introductions are prototypes. Final systems are expected to come out in all three major regions--North America, Europe and Asia--by the end of the year.

I beleive that it was also rumored that MS stated that if the devs could get their demo's running @ 15-20 fps it should run on Xbox 360 @ 60fps w/ no problems.

I knew it. This coupled with the 2/3 processors and generic ATI card thing mean that PD0 will be a whole lot more impressive graphically.

Artistically, though... Rare better get its ass in gear.

And there's always the question of: why the hell did MS use such asinine timing? Are they really that desperate to get to the party before Sony and Nintendo that they show up without any pants on? Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Pic #1 looks like another ARTWORK RENDER.

Pic #3 looks like another THIS IS WHAT 360 COULD BE LIKE WHILE THE GAME IS STILL RUNNING ON AN APPLE G5.

Pics #2,4 look like the only credible gameplay shots, shown at universally standard operating resolution of 640x480 (likely to still cater to standard, non-HD TV setups (like, if you don't have a component cable yet)).

So considering what we've seen since Thursday, what am I supposed to believe?

That's what I heard as well, the two figure was attached to the Zoonami aspect of it. I'm sure there are more in Free Radical and even more that have left on their own accord, not to mention that many more people were hired at Rare to dilute the talent that still is there now.

I'm not saying Perfect Dark Zero is going to be a mediocore game going from what little we know, but more evidence does seem to point to that than that this one will meet the level of the N64 offering.

I have to say that those new shots seem more likely to be real game shots of PD0.  I think the first one looks like a cinema shot, but I think it is using the realtime graphics.  I am not blown away by the new shots, but I am definately pleased, and I have new faith in the project.

I don't care if the original team is gone.  The original team left enough blue prints to make a great sequel, and with online play Perfect Dark can beat out Halo 2 as the best multiple player experience ever.  Which, isn't that hard, because Halo 2 really isn't that great to me.

I hope they include all the original levels from Perfect Dark, so we can relive our favorite moments.

Same team or not, that doesn't mean jack. Any team can be replaced by similarily skilled people, the grunts have no input on the game anyway. The critical part is the leadership and management. Management can screw up any game with stupid demands and the best grunts couldn't stop it. Leadership determines where the focus is, what decisions are made, etc. If the project leader decides "Hey, Halo is cool so let's have tons of identical rooms and little kamikaze enemies! Oh and get that unified ammo system everybody loves from DXIW!" there's nothing to stop them from turning the game into the next Daikatana. They have new leaders on the project. The game WILL be different unless those leaders have VERY high skill. Considering what we heard so far their new leadership also seems unexperienced (unless MS went in and fired the deadwood). Expect a game made with no understanding what made the first one great and little thought put into the game mechanics.

But if you think that the 360 is going to be DOA without that launching killer ap... this hasn't been true.  There's still no killer app for the DS, and it's outpacing the PSP (by a slim margin).  What the 360 misses in quality, they'll make up for in quantity - 20-25 games in the first 90 days isn't bad.

Besides, they're an American based company - and do you know what Americans choose as their favorite games?
