Dan the Ds "DASIY CHAIN" in Pictochat?
« on: December 03, 2004, 06:56:13 AM »
My Ds(a) is linked to another DS(b) 50ft away. Then another Ds(c) is 50ft away form Ds(b) and 100ft away from Ds(a). Are you still with me? Good. So my question is if Ds(d) is 75ft away from Ds(c) that would be in range but out of range of Ds(a) Will a and d be able to chat?

Right now I can't explain any better other than an algerbra ?, pls help me if you can.

So in theroy, you can chat with somebody about 1000ft plus even if you're out of range with the Ds user on the other end of the DasiyChain.

I highly doubt that the DS has any kind of ad-hoc networking capability.  In fact I'm sure the hardware doesn't have any.  Software could be written to implement AODV or some other protocol (for a chat application for example).  However, I'm guessing that such software won't be widespread in the current generation of any portable device.

If I rememebr correctly, the NDS patent not only contains information about wireless transmitter and reciver, but also a wireless repeater.  Which would make this chain setup possible...

I won't believe it until I see it.   This is the kind of technology that is often talked about but rarely ever does it see real implementation (see: municipal WiFi).  Daisy chaining requires significantly more complex routing code on each DS.  Complexity == time + space == money.

Hey Bill, have you tried that out with three systems?  I've wanted to find out if it's possible, but haven't had the chance to experiment.  I think what you'd have to do is:
-position your central DS(1)
-get DS(2) to the extreme limit
-turn off DS(2) and get DS(3) to the extreme limit in the opposite direction
-confirm that DS(2) and DS(3) cannot see each other
-turn on all 3 and see if they show up in the same room

You know, it could just be very simply software based. DS1 is in the middle. DS2 and DS3 are in range of 1, but not each-other. DS1 sends a message. DS2 and DS3 get it. DS2 sends someting in responce. DS2 sends to DS1 and DS3, but notices that DS3 is out of range, So it sends a special tag over to DS1 that tells it send the message to DS2. No need for any fancy hardware.

Would you care to explain how you know this?

A personal testimony, maybe?  A link?

Well...I've seen this go on long enough without some solid answer of anykind other than Bill's. Follow closely...YES IT CAN! I have personally tested this myself and it worked like a charm! Don't take my word on it? Then have a look at this http://forums.n-sider.com/showthread.php?t=2050&page=75&pp=30 or for a more direct spoit to it? http://forums.n-sider.com/showpost.php?p=42279&postcount=2235 Continue discussion! (Note: I will answer any question you have on my test if I can)

wireless repeaters aren't that complicated of technology....   once you've got wireless anyway.

I asked this becuase Nintendo has always said they don't want to charge for online so what if the DS and the Revolution use this same kinda technology. Somehow make the console wireless output range say 500-1000ft, (walkie talkies can transmitte sound 10miles with no FCC licenes needed so why not data 500-1000ft.) Do you think its possible that Nintendo can come up with its own wireless LAN,WAN,MAN and later even GAN through repeaters in the DS and REV? I hope somebody can understand what I'm getting at. I'm not good at explaining such stuff.

Juan, you would need a test with at least four units.   Otherwise the center unit could just be acting as the host of the other 2.
