General Gaming / RE:PlayStation 3 will use Blue-Ray discs
« on: August 25, 2004, 12:39:42 PM »
Okay, HP and Dell, both sell servers, whats your point. A lot of companies sell magneto optical drives, it's real popular with MRIs and servers, but you won't see it anywhere else.   However, in order for any medium to become popular, it has to have more than just hardware companies saying I'm in? Remember dvd-ram? Panasonic's idea of what dvd should have been, turned out to be a dud.  What you are saying is that it if something happens, and if something happens after that, then this might happen, that's a lot of ifs, and I seriously doubt that blu-ray will be the medium of choice in the next few years. Will it be cheap to produce?  Sure, but it's cheap to make a lot of things, doesn't make it infallible either.

Shivers: what would you prefer to archive on?  Hard drives? Floppies? Or will you go buy me a 500 dollar tape drive and 50 dollar tapes?

Show me a single major computer company that will put  blu-ray anywhere outside of servers.    If it gets selected by the dvd consortium, which looks slim.  It will not gain a market presence in tv recording unless it gets below dvr/dvd recording costs.  Just about all of blu-ray burning/drive's futures rely upon the medium being accepted by the dvd consortium.

Burners are still 3000 dollars, there is absolutely no demand for them! Blu-ray hasn't been picked to be a future medium for anything other tha ps3, and until it does, the burners will still be expensive and rare.

If things go well, as in a miracle flies in and allows sony to gain the dvd consortiums love?

Joe, sorry I haven't paid much attention to this thread.

The burners exist, but at a 3500 dollar price tag, no one is going to be able to burn them for atleast a few years, assuming blu-ray does become a big success and hits affordable levels.

They won't be able to charge others from doing it, what they are basically showing is, hey we can do it too.  Do I think they know how to do it pretty well now?  Ya, but then again I doubt they will go ahead and do it until they think they know it down to the pin.

« on: August 17, 2004, 12:44:05 PM »
I can answer this entire debate in about 6 words, no and who gives a crap.

There are just as many good side scrollers as there will be 3d games; I actually prefer 2d games to 3d.

Either way, have fun with your games, bitch about them last

I don't know if graphics are the only thing that matter.  There is only so much you can change in a fps, but there are still innovative things out there.  In ET they made a hybrid between rpg and fps where you gained experience and weapons for kills/objective completions.  In cod there was a great hoop la over there being a lot of realism, sound, environment, ai.

Obviously fps aren't going to be everyone's piece of cake, but if you watch someone play and decide that sucks, you haven't given it a fair chance.

Don't make me laugh, 8mb flash memory was affordable a year before gamecube launched.  Everyone makes money off of memory cards, get over it.

Watching just about any game that relies upon clicking a button is boring unless you are playing.

General Gaming / RE:1 Million People Are Using Xbox Live
« on: August 12, 2004, 02:14:16 PM »
Your missing the point here, there is nothing worth really comparing xbox live to.  As far as I know, it is the only gaming service that required a ludicrous fee to survive.  (Oh yes, I am a fanboy, which is why I spend more time playing pc games than I play new gamecube games.  Unless you are calling me a pc gamer fanboy, in which case, I can only laugh)

A better example is one that is atleast in the same genre.  A game that has a similar cost, similar concept, that was successful is a fair comparison here.  Well if you want to compare xbox live fairly you need to find another company that can call losing money everywhere and calling it a big success.

Actually I have one fair comparison, How many people are on ps2 online.  Last time I checked it was more than xbox.  Does it cost anything?  Up to developers.  Is it more fair than my origonal ones?  Yeah, if you can find something more fair, please enlighten us with it.

Do I hate microsoft?  Not particularly, but that doesn't mean I have to love them.  Nor do I think I should.  If you are somehow trying to imply that I felatio nintendo for liking some of their games, thats just stupid.  Am I mad Nintendo doesn't atleast try to do something with online?  Would I like to not have to spend 400 dollars to buy other consoles so I can atleast play games I enjoy?

I obviously constitute a fanboy.

Wow.  Someone defending PR as truth. Just wow.  I guess you missed all the microsoft funded surveys they used to prop up questionable accounts of Linux being absurdly expensive.

I just have one to say about you defending ANY PR as fact.

haahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahaahahah breath hahahaahahahhaahahahahahahahahaahahah

I can argue the aol thing to xbox live the same way.  Well a server chip is basically the same as any other cpu, more cache and a modified ISA in the high end are the only real differences.  The point of my example was to show how ludicrous and simple minded comparing cable, telephone, and all other similar services fair game to compare.  Well, by your logic, all services that are sold as an extra fee that invole those three should be comparable.  Lets do this: since hbo is a pay service, compare it to a pornography network.  Both use the same basic idea (monthly fees, usually paid via credit card) and are received over an internet or data service.  This so far, as much as I can surmise is the same basic logic.

Is breaking 1 million users faster than x company in a different time and different field a fair example?  If you honestly think so, do us all a favor, take a college stats class.  It will bore you out of your mind, but you won't have the appearance of someone talking for the sake of talking.

I was pointing out the irony of your comparison.  You compared AOL to Xbox Live, I just continued your comparison.
Either way, I don't really care.  Your comparison doesn't take into consideration a lot of important  facts, for instant market demand at time, consumer willingness to buy end, comparison between market recognition, etc. etc.  It's hard to honestly make a fair comparison between anything.  Statistics and comparisons mean nothing if they don't compare  honestly.

Edit:  Wow, are you kidding me?  They use the same basic fiber/copper paths so they are similar?  Lets compare desktop sales to servers now because they are all fabbed with the same basic machinery.  Lets compare Windows 2003 Database to Linspire because they are both printed on cds.  The way something is transported has nothing to do with the actual business model.

It's still no good.  A better comparison would be to the first MMORPG, Blizzars battle.net service, or something similar.  Those were built around money in online gaming, not around the fledgling internet.

The fact that AOL did so good was because the competition around it was utterly pathetic in comparison.  Besides, comparing AOL to Xbox live! has one obvious thing I find funny.  Do you expect Xbox live to plummet in popularity?  Do you expect it to drag microsoft down into debt?

When you make a comparison you set yourself up for it.

Pre this gen, nintendo was indeed in serious discussion, as was sega, with allowing microsoft to buy them.  Nintendo said no because they wanted to keep gamecube, microsoft refused.

General Chat / RE:Buy Less Than Jake's new album, DO IT NOW
« on: August 02, 2004, 06:43:03 AM »
Am I the only one who actually buys cds?  Even if the big bad evil RIAA gets some of my money, do I really care?  Are cd's overprice?  Yes.  Are some artists underpaid? Yes.

Honestly though, who do you think it hurts more, a smaller ska band, or a group that is directly responsible for marketing, surveying, and popularizing most of the music in America.  Until the boycott-(insert name here) movement is actually taken serious by any major news media (read: extremely improbable) it will not have any more effect other than giving the RIAA a scapegoat.  The RIAA makes the majority of their money on advertising big names, Britney Spears, whoever has a name that sells.  They take a lot of risks giving publicity to smaller bands, and as such a lot of times pay them less than a small record label.

I don't particularly support the RIAA, but if your only reason for not buying the album is because the RIAA may receive 5 dollars of your money, you really need to look at the rest of your spending, I'm sure you could stop using heating because the big bad local electric company owns a franchised monopoly on providing power. If you believe there is no good music out today, then why express interest in this album?

First things first, close all the buttons in the quicklaunch in the bottom right of your screen off.  Second, go to control panel, network connections, and then to your ethernet port.  Find the tab with firewall, and make sure it is off.  If that doesn't work, it's probably the router.

Those batteries take YEARS to die, believe me on it.  I have left an 8088 plugged in for a day and had it boot.  I seriously doubt the battery is actually dead.

Okay, so sitting in the couch simulates using your legs, arms, and a real environment.  Obviously, I should have known that.

One more thing, if the sales of a game are any indication of how good anything is, why don't we apply this to movies.  Why didn't Bad Boys Two receive a few oscars last year?  Why didn't MIB2 the year before?  Why didn't Harry Potter win the same year?  Why didn't Pearl Harbor either?  All grossed huge amounts of money, none received oscars.

Lets do it again.

More people buy say a Ford Taurus than a Porsche or Maserati.  Does that mean that a Ford Taurus is a superior car to either a Porsche or Maserati?  No.

I could go on and on manipulating statistics, both of us know that they mean nothing if used incorrectly, if you went to college, you should know better than to try this.

However, if you do believe that statistics back up your opinions, I know someone who you would be real buddy buddy with, Tommy Tallarico.

Turn off your gamecube, leave it plugged in for a day.  That is what I usually do if an older pc won't boot.
