Nintendo Gaming / RE:Iwata: "Paradigm Shift"

You know, I saw those screenshots of Elder Scroll 4 a few months back in Game Informer Magazine and the graphics don't look like THAT much of a leap ahead to me.

I guess they're still pre-beta screenshots, but they don't look much better than Half Life 2 or Resident Evil 4 to me.

What I would like to see in this next generation is taking out the obvious "I'm playing a game moments"  stuff like NPC walking around in an obvious preset pattern, clipping (your hand going through part of a wall), explosions just adding burn mark textures to where they went off instead of deforming the enviroment, stuff like that.

NWR Feedback / PopUp Ads
« on: December 28, 2004, 06:15:24 AM »
I use the web browser firefox to visit your website and recently the popup ads have started to display in the main window instead of the planetgamecube  page.  This is of course with the popup blocker enabled. I assume the ad script was modified to get around popup blockers?

I can appreciate the site's need to generate revenue with advertisements, but how the ads now display makes it difficult to even read your content.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: New North American (NPD) Sales Thread
« on: December 12, 2004, 03:02:31 PM »
You know, looking at Metal Gear 3, numbers,  The numbers for Silicon Knight's Twin Snakes remake don't look too bad.

IIRC:
Metal Gear Twin Snakes launch month: 180,000 some
Metal Gear 3 Snake Eater launch month: 290,00 some

And Snake Eater had "teh hype", TV commercials, and the larger user base with PS2.

Apparently Konami's Metal Gear franchise is out of vogue. Live by the sword, die by the sword. I guess.

Regarding the low software sales for the NDS, I wonder if the fact that the NDS came bundled with Picto Chat and the Metroid demo caused a lot of people not to pickup a title when they bought the game?

Think back, did you buy another title on the same day you got your NES? or were you content with Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt for awhile?

Also, I imagine the fact that you can play GBA games on it cooled the need to get a DS title right away.

Hmm, if you look at it that way it's an argument against bundled games and backwards compatibility.

As soon as we see some better titles for the DS I'm sure software sales will pickup

and I would wager a spike in sales after the kids open their DS present (which the gift givers bought without an extra game) and get tired of the Metroid Demo. "Mom, can we go to the mall and spend my Christmas money? I want a new game."

I wonder what the DS killer ap of the future is going to be?

So, have you walked past a wireless router with this thing? any wifi experiments with it yet?

I'm still curious about the DS's long-range wireless capabilities..

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Let's Talk Controller
« on: October 09, 2004, 11:49:53 PM »
Ok, Nintendo should do what it did with the original Nintendo Entertainment System:  They included with the system two different ways for the player to interact with the games: the standard game controller and the Light Gun Zapper, which was the "gimmick-slash-creative" controller.

This way games can still be ported to from the Sony and Microsoft systems and Nintendo gets to flex its creative muscle and introduce new ways for us to play.

As to what the non standard controller should be, I think something along the lines of a gyroscope based controller, using technology similar to what's shown here: Gyration Ultra GT

Instead of a mouse or tv remote like shape, I propose something like a flight joystick handle minus the base.

Think of what something like this could be used for:

You could point it at the screen like a gun in Duckhunt and the crosshairs would track with your movement.

You could swing it like a sword in a Light Saber fighting game.

You could use it as a tennis racket, a baseball bat, or a golf club. (a company called Xavix is already doing something similar )

You could use it like a mouse for games that work better under a point and click interface like SimCity or Warcraft

What do you guys think?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:What is the best 2 player game?
« on: October 08, 2004, 03:19:48 PM »
Well, if by Zelda like you mean a CO-OP Game where you run around with swords and slash monsters, I recommend Gauntlet: Dark Legacy and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King also features cooperative hack and slash, but it has that vaguely shallow feel to it that a lot of EA games have and some of the levels are pretty tough.

Ok, if you like Co-op hack and slash, here's what I recommend:

Gauntlet: Dark Legacy
Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance
Hunter the Reckoning

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Starfox Adventures, what's the deal?

Heh, Sphinx and the cursed Mummy started out kinda sucky, but  me and my buddy both liked it.  Ah well, I'll see how StarFox turns out.

Nintendo Gaming / Starfox Adventures, what's the deal?
« on: August 17, 2004, 10:24:55 PM »
My buddy just bought a Gamecube (a new one with out the hdtv plug, btw) and one of the games he picked up was StarFox Adventures. we played it for an hour or so tonight, and I didn't think it was that bad of a game. Why is it hated so much?

The graphics are really nice, I notice StarFox has the "realistic" fur  that  people are oohing and ahhing over  on the new Conker game over on Xbox, (I guess it just goes to show, Fox had it 2 years ago and no fanboy love.)

I'm enjoying the gameplay so far too. Maybe it's because I'm new to Starfox franchise. I tried the original briefly on the Super NES way back when and didn't like it.

So what's the deal? does it start to suck after awhile?  Maybe this game is like Luigi's Mansion;  because it was a core Nintendo ranchise launch game people had high expectations and it failed to meet them.  I donno, explain it to me.

I did a little digging and here is some more information about Zoonami's new website image: Vohm/8.2 Zoonami

According to this, the web designers are making all the images, so it's not an in-game shot, but the theme is 1950's spy.

Hmm a 256MB flash card for a digital camera is around $40-$50 retail US, right? I'm assuming the DS is going to use similar technology. I think they're going to be able to fit a LOT of game into a 128MB "cartridge"

maybe Nintendo should call them flash cards, ROM cards, solid state media cards  or something to remove the stigma of cartridges

Why did I buy a Cube at launch? I missed out on price cuts, a free game, a free Gameboy Player, the platinum colour, bigger memory cards, and all these cool import colours.

Nintendo Gaming / RPGs on the DS
« on: July 12, 2004, 08:18:45 PM »
Are there many RPGs  announced to come out on the Nintendo DS?

I've heard people complain that the only thing the 2nd screen is being used for is maps, and I think RPGs would be a natural for the second screen. Stat management during battles, inventory at a glance, dialog from talking to NPCs. It just makes sense to me.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Why are all the game cube controllers the same?
« on: July 12, 2004, 06:50:46 PM »
Don't get me wrong I like the Gamecube controller the best out of the three consoles right now, but it could use some improvements:

bigger d pad

round x and y buttons

a second z button, slightly larger

C stick with a hat like the control stick

It does get some thing right though, it feels great in my hands even after several hours of play, the octagon around the analog sticks is smart, and I like the larger A button.

Making controllers is, I imagine, probably one of the most difficult aspects of console design. You may not notice flaws until hours after play, or only on certain games; durability has to be tested over months and months; and you have to test it over dozens and dozens of sizes and shapes of hands.

Take for example, the X box S-type controller.  it seems okay at first but after awhile I notice the feet of the controller are at too wide of an angle and it causes my hand to start cramping.  a few millimeters change in the design would have made all the difference.

Nintendo Gaming / Why are all the game cube controllers the same?
« on: July 11, 2004, 11:58:51 PM »
How come practically all the third party controllers for the gamecube (like Madcatz, Pelican, Intec) are just a variation on Nintendo's orginal design? I for one would like a controller that shapes the X and Y buttons like the B button and puts a hat on the C stick instead of just the nubbin.  This wouldn't affect gameplay, so there's no real reason they couldn't do it.

I guess it's that way for pretty much all the consoles though, cheap knockoffs of the original gamepads.  Is there any 3rd party hardware makers out there that have their own style?

Nintendo Gaming / Ocarina of Time the soundtrack
« on: June 16, 2004, 08:37:37 PM »
I was sorting through my CDs today and I found an old CD, Ocarina of Time, the soundtrack. It has 4 tracks on it from the game. I remember they were handing these things out for free along with a t-shirt back in the day. I didn't have a N64 (I was more into PC games at the time) but I worked for K-mart and the electronics manager gave me one.

Does this thing have any value?  is it a rare find?

TalkBack / RE:Sammy-Sega Holdings Logo & Sega Restructuring
« on: June 02, 2004, 08:38:07 AM »
Yeah, this logo does kinda look like poo.  The gradients are very amatuerish, and it feels like it was whipped together in 10 minutes with Corel Draw or something.

Although to be fair, the graphics designer was probably bowing to what the corporate customer wanted. I know I've had that happen to me before, the client keeps making changes to your work until it's ruined.

We like to call it Michael Jackson Nose Syndrome.

Yeah, I only saw the TV ad once as well, and it barely shows the game (less than a second?) just that deranged kid sneaking around his therapists office...

BTW, does anyone know the sales figures on the Xbox port of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance sold?  Just to give some numbers to compare with.

I found something similar at Babbages and Software Etc but it's a different brand and adapts the PS/2 controller to either the Gamecube or the Xbox. it's $20 instead of $10 though so I'm going to look around a bit more for the Nyko adapter.

The Godzilla game is fun with multiple people but I wasn't too impressed with it otherwise; they don't give you enough monsters unlocked to start out with. I got it for $6.99 with a trade in at the local game shop.
