Essentially, fighting games pit players directly against each other in a contest of skill, dexterity, and psychology. You can think of it as a high-speed chess match played with asymmetrical pieces. To win, you will need to thoroughly understand what your fighter is capable of, and figure out the most effective ways to apply that against the player you're facing. This simple dynamic is the genesis of countless emergent strategies, and a deeper understanding of fighting game fundamentals often allows for a deeper appreciation of fighting games in general.
Fighting games, far more than any other genre in gaming, are driven by an extremely dedicated community of fans who take it upon themselves to ensure the longevity of their scene. The tournaments that form the backbone of the fighting game scene are, by and large, run by fans, for fans. This year's annual Evolution tournament (often known simply as "Evo") in Vegas was attended by top players from around the U.S., Japan, Korea, U.K., France, China, Mexico, and beyond; it received media coverage from G4, GameSpot, and Destructoid, drew over 2 million unique viewers via live streams of the matches, and played host to new announcements from Capcom and Namco's top producers. Evo was not created by Capcom or Namco to publicize their games; it's not run by GameStop or some "e-sports" league that intends to televise it for profit; it was organized by a small group of guys who simply love fighting games. This is a small, tightly-knit community that paradoxically spans the entire globe, and few people can really say that about their hobbies.
Unlike so much of what had come before, playing serious Streetfighter required putting part of yourself, and your self-respect, on the line. SF had a second joystick, and meant it. Its two-player mode wasn't two guys alternating turns, scoring points against some common computer foe. Streetfighter invited you to stick it to the guy standing next to you. End his turn by beating him off the machine, take his money, and make him pay for the chance to question you again. Being in the arcade at all was admitting you cared, and Streetfighter was the king of the arcade. The game is simply too complex to be played at a high level dismissively. By stepping up, you were saying something- admitting the investment in time and effort it took you to get to this level. That was fundamentally incompatible with casually laughing off a loss, claiming this was "just a game", and everyone there knew it. Walking away from the all-too-human being that just handed you your ass was also a lot harder than walking away from third place on a high-score list. Especially when this punk might even be laughing at you (and if it was me, he was).
Serious Streetfighter was a personal thing. Playing serious SF meant playing in the arcade, and arcades are (or at least used to be, pre-Disnification) shady places, filled with shady characters. Going to the arcade meant taking a trip, the entire purpose of which was picking fights with these people. It's you versus someone else, one on one. You don't have a team to lean on, where the brilliant performance of a Michael Jordan can gloss over the brick you just laid. You are the team- it's you on the line, with no one to back you up, no one to help you out, and nobody else to blame when you lose. You stand there together until someone is the unequivocal loser. You play through the smoke, music, lights, and the veiled (or not-so-veiled) hatred of everyone around you. You take all the glory for every win, the full shame behind every loss.

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift 2 (Released!)
From joystiq: Two updates are coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift in May -- one free (to you), and one paid. A patch is being prepared, intended to alter the game balance of the console versions to be in line with the arcade release of Continuum Shift 2.
It will also add new tutorials, new Challenge Mode content for every character, and tweaks and updates to the online mode and its interface. The patch also fixes a problem with Valkenhayn's Achievements in the Xbox 360 version. This won't cost you anything to download, but Aksys will still benefit financially -- the update also puts an ad banner on some in-game screens.

Skullgirls (January?)
A GuiltyGear/DarkStalkers/Marvel-inspired 2D fighter with crazy good hand-drawn animation (1300 frames per character), a soundtrack by Symphony of the Night composer Michiru Yamane, and professonal combo wizard Mike Z in charge of the technical stuff. This one is my most anticipated game! Only eight characters at first, with up to like 50 with DLC. Variable team sizes, kind of like the Capcom vs SNK 2 ratio system.

Tekken X Street Fighter (2012?)
Harada and his Tekken team will get cracking on this in earnest once TTT2 is done. Capcom will have no input on this game, just as as Namco has no input on Capcom's SFxTekken. It's the battle of the game companies!
Soul Calibur V (2012)
This sequel looks to introduce a lot of new characters, faster gameplay, infinite stages (like Tekken), and super moves. "Looks gay" - Harada, Tekken producer.

Oh my lord has that many ever come out in one year before? I'm enjoying SSFIV and if I could get MvC3 on 3DS I would get that in a heartbeat.
I guess this would make me happy if I enjoyed fighting games. It's a good time to start!
this list makes me happy, but i want a new Darkstalkers... whats the word on that?
"Yes I always try and talk about Vampire (Darkstalkers) during interviews because I want to show Capcom that there is a demand for a new game," he revealed, before stating decisively in English: "I am desperate to make this game!"
I just heard that MvC3 doesn't have Mega Man is that true? Did they ax everyone from that Universe?
Soul Calibur V (?)Reminder that I am always right, literally every single time, and SC5 is official
They're gonna announce it middle of May, I swear to god. I'm placing a wager that the awful guest characters are Harry Potter, GI Joe, and Sonic the Hedgehog.

Looks like the fighting game craze from the 90's is back. I wonder how long it will take to crash and burn this time...probably when Shaq Fu comes out

Skullgirlz looks a little wierd to me. I need to see it in motion. I don't like the character designs, that's for sure. They seem generic and a little too 'tooney. From what I heard so far that the online mode is terrible compared to SSFIV which has an excellent one.
I can let you all in on a little secret: DoA Dimensions is quite good. The review should be going up today. I haven't played Street Fighter IV 3D, but Dead or Alive packs some content into that little card...it's just too bad the 3D effect it's that great.
I can let you all in on a little secret: DoA Dimensions is quite good.pardon my skepticism
Do any of you regularly play fighting games online on either 360 or PS3?All day erryday. I play up to a few hundred matches every week online!
My question is like smash bros does lag almost 100% get in the way of someones skill? As in when people talk about tiers and such, are online matches never included?Every fighter I've played on PS3 and 360 has better performance for Smash Bros. For games like BlazBlue, SF4, and HDR, it's extremely solid and the lag is unnoticeable if your connection is reasonable. Shoutouts to wireless connections being garbage

Still no Megaman. But there is a new Megaman Legends stage! AhahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaThey were going to use the Model for Megaman Legends 3.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Inafune never worked at Capcom. We have always been at war with EurasiaAnd Strider is really an interactive documentary because the Russians won the Cold War initially.
I also thought HUR HUR MILKING for roughly half a second, and then reconsidered:I thought SF3 recently got a new release that add Youtube and other things.
- 12 characters would cost $60 via dlc (UMvC3 is $40)
- they can fix/change anything they want with a new disc release
- MvC3 desparately needed a lot of things (spectator mode, reworking of x-factor, some character tuning)
TBH, I think the numbers look good for the consumers, it's really a much better value than doing it all via DLC.
Oh, and for reference:
Street Fighter 2: World Warrior - 1991
SF2 Dash (CE) - 1992
Hyper Fighting - 1992
Super SF2 - 1993
ST - 1994
SF Alpha - 1995
Alpha 2 - 1996
Alpha 3 - 1998
SF III: New Generation - 1997
SF3 SI - 1997 (in Japan) 1998
3S - 1999
I thought SF3 recently got a new release that add Youtube and other things. That's not out until later this summer! It doesn't have any balance changes or anything. Those are just the 'major' updates, I mean, SF2 and Alpha have had a ton of extra versions on pretty much every system
LOL, who is stupid enough to pay $5 for a character? Even $2 is pushing it.That's like, your opinion,
QuoteLOL, who is stupid enough to pay $5 for a character? Even $2 is pushing it.That's like, your opinion, cheapskateman. That's what the DLC characters in Marvel and Mortal Kombat are. The BlazBlue ones are $7!
Ok I have to say a Full new Character is worth more than Horse Armor. A lot more work goes into a new character.QuoteLOL, who is stupid enough to pay $5 for a character? Even $2 is pushing it.That's like, your opinion, cheapskateman. That's what the DLC characters in Marvel and Mortal Kombat are. The BlazBlue ones are $7!
That's worse than horse armor. I don't see how these publishers think they are worth that much.

Holy fucking **** Freddy Krueger in Mortal Kombat! That's so fucking awesome. I just finished story mode last night...fucking great game. I was just about to post the video here...but I have been beaten to the punch.
And who would really purchase all 12 of those UMvC3 characters if they were DLC?
I didn't know Morari swung that way...

I didn't know you were into she-males.
Those hand-cuffs are in an odd position.Yeah, they do look weirdly... clipped on or something. Hurm.
I don't think it's considered offensive (as opposed to those other terms). Still, I will re-phrase and say "transsexual".

I don't think it's considered offensive (as opposed to those other terms). Still, I will re-phrase and say "transsexual".
It is a very offensive term to those of us lumped into that group. Transexual is fine. Thanks for your understanding and compassion in this matter. :)
She's even more attractive once you "know"... :)
I saw some very lame PeacocksI think he's talking about me....
Capcom's fighting may be "better", but it's not anywhere near as fun. Nor is it as entertaining to watch, if Evo was any indication. :PUh what? People were one step from rioting during Marvel and SF4. Maybe a lot of people thought it was a foregone conclusion that Perfect Legend was going to win MK...
Freddy and Jason would be even worse. Talk about desperate characters. Neither has ever been in anything worth watching and neither are particularly inspired by any means. It'd be like putting Chucky or something in.
Skullgirls stuff:

There's a lot of talk about the story in this one and pretty much everything in this one. The highlights for me were Youtube/Facebook support for replays, bringing a friend into training mode online.
Rather have Spawn who showed up in SC2 but hasn't been seen since.
Mortal Kombat 9 is still really good though.
I dug my old Rock'em Sock'em Robots out of the attic today... that counts as a fighting game, right?
That trailer for DoA5 was actually really cool looking. It's always been a great looking series though. But Vergil is awesome...
As far as UMvC3... do we really need yet another character from DMC? Especially one that's not even all that distinguishable from Dante?
Don't like the obviously palette-swapped characters.
A bull doubts the lousy outlook. Around gestion de l'agenda slides any surface. The culprit deranges the uneasy drama above the chicken. Gestion de l'agenda paces under my virgin abuse. Why can't this module volunteer behind gestion de l'agenda? The important feat cheats into a scratch.
I wish I could enjoy these kinds of games.
...Is that Parasoul and Peacock? If so they have been showing Parasoul for a while. Peacock I could see them just wanting to goof with more.
And for this post's Skullgirls viral advertising:
In an unexpected turn of events, Valentine the ninja nurse is confirmed for the initial starting cast, and Squigly & Umbrella will be DLC at a later date. There is one more character to be revealed; speculation is that its the final boss character (which will also be playable).
Darn it. I get all the news I know for this game from you... I fell misled...shoryuken.com has a Skullgirls forum now, where several people working on the game post pretty freely about stuff that's going on with it. If you're super interested you could spend quite a lot of time reading up.
Apparently, Official Xbox Magazine named Mortal Kombat the Best Fighting Game of 2011.
I still think that goes to Street Fighter series, and for 3D fighting maybe Virtual Fighter series or Soul Caliber.
moar liek scrubby mashy fun
The fact of the matter however is that catering to your crowd makes games less fun. What? No! That is wrong wrong wrong! I just spent like a million pages arguing against this in that other thread.
Let's talk about Soul Calibur for a bit.
New patch coming for SSF4Arcade edition which going fix a few unbalanced issues. Just got my copy back (after an year+) and now all I need is a stick. Looking at Madcatz nontournment SSFIV stick (that way I can just mod it to tournment standards without paying the price). Anything is going beat this freaking analog controller.Yeah, that's what I did, it was cheaper at the time. You can still usually find a TE for 100 bucks. Oh oh oh yeah, did you see the KOF stick? 100 bucks and it works with both PS3 and 360... and it looks pimp!
I can't really disagree with you, as I've never played anything beyond SC2 due to a lack of availability on any system of interest. That said, the series always seem to be more masher-friendly than most. I'm honestly surprised it has any sort of tournament standing because of that.I really should get a tattoo or something that says being easy to play and beginner/casual friendly does not directly oppose interesting high level play. ****
Used TE's are still $140+ even on ebay, I didn' know Mad Catz Brawlstick WWE was considered midrange because you can find that sitck actually cheaper than they listed--seen it for $50 in a few online sites.Wow, yeah, I guess prices really blew up, you used to be able to get them for $100 new all the time a while back.
So seriously, I'm down for some SSF2 action. Get at me.Aw yeah, XBL or PC?
Skullgirls is showing more polish. It could be out next month! Knock on wood

Sadly uninterested until they announce it for a usable platform. :(Nice try at trolling, not really, but it's X360/PS3/PC. I don't know if they've "announced" the PC one per se but the plan is they're going to work on that version soon as the 360/PS3 versions are out the door. I may be putting words in someone's mouth but I think one of the team posted that that was the plan.
I'm excited about the two new characters in SSFIVAE2012 though!ZUBAZ ZUBAZ ZUBAZ
Skullgirls
Tonight at 6:30PM ET, X-play goes hands-on with Skullgirls, and Mike Z shows Valentine in action for the first time!
Well after messing around with MS tech support for a couple of hours I finally got LIVE and other hour or so with the fightstick I decide why not a ranked match to start things off. Me (Ryu) vs B+ ranked Bison from the Uk, the first match I landed in a few good blows but in the second match it was 8 second smackdown with me face down in the dirt. Ouch and that's just with a B rated player, hate to see what the others can do.Why would you play someone in the UK? You're in the US, right?
Still getting used to using a fightstick (always been an gamepad kind of guy) and so far I found I can get ultras off ahell of alot easier but still having trouble with the trails mode combo sections.Don't sweat the trials too much. They're not really that good for teaching practical stuff. It's kind of weird how trials make you do hard links before easier, more practical stuff.
Next up with MK vs DC--I'm a little better at this one so I expect to win a couple of matches (or at least make it look good).hnuughh huhrhhghhh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iABgrhiC-Y8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iABgrhiC-Y8)
Can we talk about Soul Calibur again?
Still my favorite fighting game of all time and launch game of all time.
I honestly never played fighting games enough to really master the characters before but with this one I could do every move of every single person (except Voldo, that freak). My best friend and I would have epic 8 on 8 battles every day with all kinds of different characters. Edge Master was my favorite character to pick.
Then I picked up number 2 in college and just killed everyone I played against so even though it had those cool weapon unlocks I just never got into it as much as the first.
Good news for PC gamers, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition is 50% off ($19.99) on Steam. Even though the PC version isn’t getting AE version 2012 until Q1 of next year, this is still a pretty good deal. You can also get a Four Pack for $59.98 and split the cost between friends for an even better discount. The Steam Holiday Sale ends on January 2nd, which is more than enough time to make a decision.
Is SCV released?!
It's no different than a "Game of the Year" type edition. The original film is a sweet bonus, as it's actually quite entertaining... probably the only decent video game adaptation ever. This only has two downsides: It included the lame-ass Freddy Kruger character and isn't available for PC.
Ryu
People take their individual experiences and think the who chain is like it. 95% of my experience at GameStops have been positive.
Is SCV released?!
Hang in there, Namco is pretty close to letting it all out:

So which is the best party game, i.e. which can you plunk a bunch of drunk friends in front of that have never played the game before and have fun? That's what fighting games are really about.
Last thing they updated to their website was earlier today was the background music to Rarity's Stage.
Oh god I've been hearing about that nonstop, and I don't even know where to start or where I land on it. I think it's true that the fighting game scene is rowdier than most, but as for how sexist it might be, I don't know, you'll probably have to ask a lady about that. In fact, a friend of mine said she was writing an article about it, I'll pass it along when I see it. I do, however, think that the fighting game scene might be the only place where you can say someone talks a lot of **** but they're really nice too.
I'm curious if anyone goes to events or tournaments for any other sort of game, does that scene seem sexist to you? I mean video games are pretty male-dominated, especially competitive ones...
I also like this post that sp00ky made: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=35591569&postcount=784
As for the 5th day video. I can understand both sides. The fighting game fans feel that they need to keep the status quo and keep it how it has been since it has been the last 15 years or so. Basically they think they are doing fine on their own and they think they should keep things going.
Street Fighter x Tekken is coming out in a few days - who's getting it?
I'm curious if anyone goes to events or tournaments for any other sort of game, does that scene seem sexist to you? I mean video games are pretty male-dominated, especially competitive ones...
When Aris said that the sexist stuff was an inseparable part of the rowdy fight game scene, he was being a social retard and also completely wrong. And I think he would agree with that now.
I posted my Street Fighter x Tekken review today! http://fightmangame.tumblr.com/ (http://fightmangame.tumblr.com/)Those first two articles, the "Game Tournament Organizer Guide" and "Dracula for President", are hilarious! I think I missed most of the inside jokes in the Marvel vs. Capcom Changelog though. :P:
Akuma
- Can now steal chi and use it
- New costume: hawaiian shirt and straw hatSomeone, I think an actual Capcom artist, once drew this really cool but maybe out of character Akuma art: http://i.imgur.com/rUcc3.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/rUcc3.jpg) - I was really hoping this would be an outfit in SF4 :S
AmaterasuAmaterasu doesn't have a voice, just barks!
- English voice now available
Captain AmericaThis comic book page, lol: http://www.superherostuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/ultimatecaptainamerica.jpg (http://www.superherostuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/ultimatecaptainamerica.jpg)
- Changed ‘A’ on costume to ‘F’ for ‘France’
- Captain America’s pet bald eagle, Soldier, now available as a projectile: Screamin’ EaglesIn the old Marvel games, Captain America used to say "GOOD JOB SOLDIER" when he won and a Bald Eagle would land on his arm. Also, Screamin' Eagles is a historical reference and lol TF2: http://boourns.cjb.net/screamin_eagle.jpg (http://boourns.cjb.net/screamin_eagle.jpg)
- Fixed a glitch that caused Captain Falcon to display as Chris RedfieldChris Redfield punches giant rocks and black people at a Falcon Punch level in Resident Evil 5
Chun LiNobody plays Chun Li for some reason!
- We added Chun Li to the game! Please try her out!
Dantehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yJI-xFk6Ho (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yJI-xFk6Ho)
- Dante’s line when assisting with Trish has been changed to “sweet moves gurl”
- Corrected name to ‘Justin Bieber’Dante has a passing resemblance to Bieber in MVC3 and commentators have mention this from time to time. My pal always says "WHO GAVE JUSTIN BIEBER GUNS"
DeadpoolHe also says "WHO GAVE SPIDERMAN GUNS"
- Now has web swing, spider-string, web ball, and web throw, but with guns
Doctor StrangeWhen Dr Strange says "Spell of Vishanti" it sounds like "Celery Shank"
- “Celery Shank” super name corrected in move list
- Hosts of Hoggoth no longer hoary"By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth" is a classic Dr Strange quote, of course!
Dr. DoomThis is a joke about the Fantastic Four movie
- New mask-less costume that looks vaguely like Norm MacDonald, but is actually the guy from Nip/Tuck
Frank WestYou can do this in Dead Rising and I honestly want this feature for UMVC3, it would be pretty funny!
- Photos Frank takes are now available for viewing from the menu
Ghost Rider
- Fixed a bug that caused bees to put Ghost Rider in permanent hitstun
Hawkeye'Gimlet' is one of Hawkeye's supers, and ludicrous giblets is a reference to Rise of the Triad and honestly I didn't expect anyone to ever get this. Maybe I should have made a joke about Hawkeye dies all the time
- Hawkeye now has a powerup super: ‘ludicrous gimlets’
HulkStand H has armor so it goes through everything and leads to hilarious Hulk success stories. Also a reference to this meme: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/push-button-receive-bacon (http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/push-button-receive-bacon)
- Hulk now gains additional meter from standing H and receiving bacon
Iron ManIron Man struggles with alcoholism in the comic books and is also kind of an asshole
- Gains new moves from powerup system. Input back, down, down/back+attack to drink scotch and throw the bottle.
Nathan SpencerThere's no jump button in the classic Bionic Commando, of course!
- To more closely implement Bionic Commando playstyle, jump has been removed
NemesisNemesis attacks with his tentacles on occasion and the Japanese have a weird and useless way of censoring their bizarre tentacle porn!
- Small black bars now censor violent penetration of opponent’s character
- Now gets perks from noobtube killstreaksNemesis uses a rocket launcher and these are all Call of Duty references
NovaNova already has a pretty typical pajama-like superhero outfit
- New costume added: pajamas with feet
Rocket RaccoonRocket Raccoon is already annoyingly small and to make him any smaller would be pretty insane
- Rocket Raccoon is now smaller
RyuPretty sure Ryu is far and away the most common character in SF4 online, but you really don't see him online that much. A lot of people joke that the 'trenchcoat mafia' (Dante, Virgil, Wesker) is the 'Ryu' of MVC3 I suppose.
- To more closely reflect Ryu’s Street Fighter IV version, Ryu is now selected by 70% of online players
Sentinel
- Made changes to help in matchup against catchphrases
- It appears to be a **** the knicks plugged in can’t do anything right mango
Shuma-GorathShuma-Gorath somehow manages these expressions even though he's a tentacle monster with one giant eyeball
- Each of Shuma’s expressions now more smug and/or saucy
Spider-ManFrom the infamous parody of the Spiderman newspaper comic: http://danarchy.youfailit.net/Spiderman/ (http://danarchy.youfailit.net/Spiderman/) (#10). I play Spidey so naturally I say this all the time.
- New matchup dialogue regarding Wolverine’s claws, sexual orientation
Super SkrullSkrull says 'There is too much trash in this universe' all the time
- There is too much trash in the universe: Super Skrull now picks up litter to gain meter, community service time
Tron BonneThat game is famously cancelled, lol
- Use your save data from Megaman Legends 3 to unlock a new costume
VergilA reference to this meme-ish comic: http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/6725/119767809896vn5.png (http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/6725/119767809896vn5.png)
- In-game mail system allows Vergil to receive letters from Dante
WolverineWolverine's dive kick covers a really large area. ****. http://cdnimg.visualizeus.com/thumbs/ed/00/funny,hitbox,mvc3,stupid,trollface,wolverine-ed000c802e811fdbcf5beacf186ff30e_h.jpg (http://cdnimg.visualizeus.com/thumbs/ed/00/funny,hitbox,mvc3,stupid,trollface,wolverine-ed000c802e811fdbcf5beacf186ff30e_h.jpg)
- Changed a hitbox that caused Wolverine’s dive kick to be less than full screen
WeskerWesker dresses like and as of RE5, moves like Neo from the Matrix
- Fixed a glitch that caused Neo to display as Wesker
- In the interest of realism, Wesker’s OTG pistol changed to instant KOWesker is already ridiculously good and this is just silliness
- Wesker now removes his jacket when performing Phantom Dance for the second time and gains 15% speed and damage.A change in UMVC3 was that when Wesker lost his sunglasses (which he did when he either got hit a lot or did Phantom Dance), he gained a little extra speed and damage. A lot of people didn't like this because he was already good and didn't really need any boosts.
- Wesker now removes his pants when performing Phantom Dance for the third time and gains 15% more speed and damage.
ZeroZero's combos already take an annoyingly long time and this would make it worse
- Lowered Zero’s damage, but also lowered hitstun reduction to compensate
SYSTEM CHANGESFrank West and Zero already have them. There is still no Megaman in the game and a lot of people interpret this as 'rubbing it in'
- Each character now has a new Megaman DLC costume!
- To reduce setup time at tournaments, button configurations have been disabledCapcom (Japan) still refuses to implement fast, good button configuration options and it makes tournament players butthurt since it takes up a lot of time
- Ranked matchmaking optimized to match all players directly with either a player with a 0/0 record or ViscantViscant, the top player that won Evo, had no job and played online around the clock after MVC3 came out so chances are you would play him at some point if you played online much.
- Ultra X-Factor Pandora Gems are now available as DLCUltra = SF4 comeback mechanic
Capcom is kicking itself in the nuts again and again.More like kicking *us* in the nuts

SKULLGIRLS APRIL 4My god, yes. I'm ready for this game.
My Mortal Kombat arrived with it's online code intact (love Gamefly, best place to buy used games IMO) now I'm wondering what setup do most people use for the game for an 8 button layout?
Just did the training mode and I'll start knocking down the story mode next. Also picked up KoF XIII (Amazon lightining DoYD for $30) but that's a couple days away.
SF V T DLC plans and pricing:I just read an article (yay, I can read) that all the DLC content comes out to over $100. Ow.

In a surprise move that originally started as a joke, Long Island Joe is in talks with pornography company Brazzers for a sponsorship. Brazzers has also stated they are considering getting more involved with the fighting game community including events and other potential sponsorships.lol
The ramifications of this event are very debatable since the only detail known is the deal which is still in the air. What that entails from him as a player and what it means for Brazzers involvement in the fighting game community is currently unknown.
And the AI is said to be brutal even on lowest settings.scrub sighted
How much of the tutorial does it let you play in demo mode? The first column of lessons?
Also it's not like other fighters give you any tutorials without buying them...
edit: actually I don't even know of another demo for a fighter that gives you training mode at all besides Skullgirls
edit2: seriously that looks like troll bait. 5 minutes, lol
I think Mortal Kombat's may have had the tutorial (and even if the demo doesn't, the 1 hour trial for PS+ users does), but here's the thing: those other fighting games usually have the decency to just lock out the entire mode if it's not part of the demo. They don't make you think you can learn how to play the game, and then take that experience away from you once you enter.
5 minutes was all it took to see that the game wasn't made for casual fighting game fans like me, so I saw no sense in buying it.
It really seems like you're saying something is actually worse than nothing here, and it just doesn't make sense to me. You're saying you'd rather have them lock out the whole thing? Or they should be obligated to give you the whole thing for free? The demo seems a lot more substantial than any other fg demo already. Unlimited training mode!
So are you going to reconsider when the move list gets patched in in like a month, even though you could, you know, print one?
So are you going to reconsider when the move list gets patched in in like a month, even though you could, you know, print one?
It's not my job as a player to compensate for the developer's incompetence. No, I probably won't reconsider buying it post-patch, unless it goes on sale on PSN for $5 or something similar. The developer made a poor first impression, and that's on them. Why should I waste my time and money on this game when I can play a fighting game that's more competently designed (and frankly more immediately enjoyable) like Mortal Kombat?
And that's all I have to say on Skullgirls. Like it if you must, but I just don't see the draw and I thought the demo was very poorly conceived.
Yeah it's fine if you don't like it, but it's coming across me like you have a weird sense of entitlement about what you get with a free demo / 15 dollar game. Also lol at MK being better designed (it's not)

Weren't you complaining awhile back about the two DLC MvC3 characters costing money?I don't think it was me. Maybe it was me. I only complain about fake-DLC pay unlocks though :3
I'm not sure how anybody can defend the poor decisions of Skullgirls. And I don't believe that "if a move list went in, something else would go out." That's not how this works. By comparison to every other production value, the move list must be exceedingly small and easy to implement.Yeah, actually, it's exactly how it works. Implementing a movelist is a little more complicated than copy-paste-a-bunch-of-code-thing. For one thing, the staff has like maybe two and a half programmers, and I believe it has to be made to jive in multiple languages (it's a world wide release). It's not as easy as you make it out to be. It's weird that they don't have it on day one, yeah, but I'm getting the vibe that they were absolutely out of time and/or money.

Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on ps2 is pretty awesome. It has ST, 3rd Strike, some other stuff and great extras. Also, download GGPO.Whichever you decide, just so long as you link in this thread or in your sig. That blog is off the hook! And you know that serious commitment goes along with titling a post "Inevitable Skullgirls Article X of 33". :P:
Welp, guess I better start updating Fightman Game again! Should I keep it on tumblr, move it, mirror it, or does it not matter? I don't really like tumblr except for the chance to be reblogged...

There's more stuff we don't know about yet (this is coming with the update that adds a character or two)
I just thought of something... DIABLO 3 DIDN'T RELEASE WITH PVP OR THE REAL MONEY AUCTION HOUSE. I HOPE ALL YOU SKULL GIRLS WHINERS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT DIABLO 3 OR YOU ARE FREAKING HYPOCRITES
Thankyou.
And lastly, Persona 4 Arena continues to expand it's roaster, hopefully these additional characters like Elizabeth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=XeevWKpYpHg) won't be day 1 DLC.
The gaming media certainly seems to be slobbering all over Sony's Battle Royale. From the same people who have said "I'm not interested in Smash Bros." I think the bias happens at a subconscious level.
Weekend Confirmed 110 spent the opening 20 minutes on Battle Royale, and Garnett was always apathetic on Smash Bros.

Canceling - Canceling refers to connecting one move to another in a way that reduces the recovery frames of the first move, and usually allows you to combo moves together that otherwise would not be fast enough to connect to each other. It's most often used in the context of connecting a normal to a special move, or a special move to a super move, and is done by simply inputting the next move before the current move is done being performed. The most common notation for cancels when talking about 2D fighters is "xx," so if you see a Ryu combo that reads c.MK xx hadouken xx shinkuu hadouken, you would press down + medium kick (which is called "forward kick" in Street Fighter, just to confuse you) for the crouching MK, then cancel it into a fireball by performing the quarter-circle forward and punch while your kick is still going, then cancel that into his super fireball by doing the super fireball input while Ryu is doing the first fireball. If canceling didn't exist, Ryu would be standing there recovering from his first fireball for way too long to throw a super fireball and have it connect as part of the same combo. Canceling normals into each other is the basis for chain comboing, which is discussed below.
"Chains" vs. "Links" - A chain combo is a string of moves wherein the beginning of one move in the string cancels the recovery frames of the previous move; i.e., the moves "chain" together smoothly and are done simply by pressing one button after the other, usually with fairly even timing. Conversely, links are sequences of moves wherein each move has to completely finish its recovery animation before you can do the next move in the string. This often means that more precise timing is required, because you're left with a pretty small window during which your opponent is still "reeling" from the previous hit (i.e., they're in hitstun) while you perform the next move in the sequence. Games with a stronger emphasis on chain combos include Darkstalkers and Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Street Fighter IV more strongly emphasizes links. Tekken has a mix of each, technically speaking.
Damage/Hitstun Scaling - Because of the huge damage potential that combo systems create, many games institute a sort of proration system to put limits on what is possible through combos. Damage scaling refers to the gradual decrease in damage that your attacks do as your combo gets longer, so a hard attack done as the 5th hit of a combo does a lot less damage than it does when it's the 1st hit of the combo. Similarly, hitstun scaling is a gradual reduction in the amount of recovery time your opponent has after each hit. The latter is basically a failsafe to help prevent infinite combos from emerging, since eventually your opponent will recover so quickly from being hit that further comboing becomes impossible. There are mixed opinions about this mechanic in the fighting game community. You may also see these terms referred to as hitstun deterioration, proration, reduction, decay, etc.
Option Selects - An option select is a situation in which one input (or set of inputs) can result in multiple outputs, depending on which output is best for the situation. Example: in Street Fighter IV, throws are broken by inputting light punch (LP) and light kick (LK) at the same time when your opponent attempts to throw you. By pressing down-back + LP + LK while on defense, you create an option select: down-back blocks low, so if your opponent is in the middle of an attack (standing or low), the game engine ignores your LP and LK inputs in favor of blocking the attack. If your opponent attempts to throw you, the LP + LK input will break the throw. If your opponent does nothing, the game engine prioritizes the crouching (down-back) and LK inputs, and your character will do a c.LK, which is usually a very quick/safe move. The term is a bit obtuse, but you can see in this situation that one set of inputs results in three different "options" to select from.
Resets - A reset is when you intentionally drop a combo to create an opportunity to start a new combo. This is done to maximize damage output by connecting 2 (or more) combos rather than just one complete combo -- i.e., it's better to do 4 hits of a 5-hit combo, reset, and get another 5-hit combo than to just land 5 hits in the first place. This is especially true of games that have severe damage scaling on longer combos, like Marvel vs. Capcom, since you're "resetting" the damage and hitstun scaling. The risk, of course, is that any time you drop a combo, you give your opponent an opportunity to block or escape further damage, so the most effective resets are those that are done unexpectedly, or in ways that are very confusing/difficult to escape.
Throw Breaks, Techs, and Softening - "Teching" a throw refers to inputting a command in anticipation of your opponent's attempt to throw you (or as part of an option select) that results in you reducing the damage taken from the throw. In some games, you can break out of a throw completely and avoid any damage from it altogether. Other games only allow you to "soften" the damage from a throw, rather than breaking it entirely. This is typically done the same way a break would be done in other games; it simply varies based on what the commands for throws are in a particular game. Throw softening also usually allows you to recover from the throw quickly, rather than suffering a full knockdown. Super Turbo and the Darkstalkers series both use throw softening rather than throw breaks.
The Xbox 360 version has a 83 average (based on 45 reviews), so the critical consensus is that it's a good game.
Microtransactions--Capcom really trying to milk this, first with it's 12 "locked" characters on disc but also with the "gem" system. The gem system was supposed to help the casuals and hardcore alike but now you have some 30-40% damage increase gems that you can "buy" giving one "set" of players an extreme advantage over the other. For Evo, the officials decided to Ban Gems.Yeah, this is an annoying thing. I should point out the primary reason for not using gems in tournaments is the ridiculous amount of time it takes to set them up, though.
Pre-programmed combo system--an "feature" in the game. *Also note it's another microtransaction for Capcom*. Pretty sure at EVO they disabled this system as well.Actually that's bad and useless, since it takes meter to do something you can do normally without it. Somebody accidentally hit the button combination to activate one in the top 4, and he not only lost the meter, but got punished for it.
Timeout--so many matches end in an timeout.Yep. There's a lot of running away in the last 30 seconds of matches.
The whole, if one character is defeated than the match is lost. Especially evil in an partner 2vs2 game.I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing. You have to make a lot of judgment calls with your character switching. One of the rare occasions where the game makes you think. Tekken Tag Tournament works the same way.

lol, professional reviewers don't know the first thing about fighting games. They only know how to analyze the superficial features. Compare those scores to the user metascores. The game is ASS.

User reviews often differ from professional, doesn't mean squat. It is so easy for someone to write a user review to screw up the average. It's fine if you don't like agame, but don't resort to slamming critics because your opinion differs. It's no different than any other genre.
Iwon't get into the joke that fighting tournaments are with their rules, ESPECIALLY the Smash Bros. games and how those tournaments invalidate their credibility..
1. Apparently the game's turned from what seemed a fun, light fighting game for Persona fans into what seems a very technical fighter ala its sister series BlazBlue. I like BlazBlue, but I'm not fond of what it's become as the Tourney fans took it over. I really just wanted to sit back and enjoy seeing some of my favorite characters again, but it seems it's going to be as irritating to play as BlazBlue's become. Hmm...I don't think being an Arc fan and wanting something non-technical is going to compute, ever. This game has to hang with the competition in Japanese arcades, etc. I mean, look at all the other games they've made (GG, BB, HnK).
2. I was a little disturbed watching Elizabeth's Moves video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xy2FV06862g), as it looks like she actually has Instant Kill moves (Mamudoon and Mahamaon) built into her normal moves. Granted, it does fit the character and the Persona she's using (Thanatos), but she seems extremely overpowered for a fighting game.
I'm still interested to see the game's story mode since that seems to be based off BlazBlue's, but I'm starting to wonder if the game's worth my pre-order now. I'm a Persona 4 fan, but I didn't ask for a fighting game and it doesn't seem designed for me.It's probably not for you, unless you're willing to change your mindset a bit. But hey at least it doesn't cost like a hundred dollars, like it does in Japan :(
Or maybe it's time to pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get good at games instead of looking for crutches and handouts :smug:
Guilty Gear had instant kills too, but they were so difficult to land that they were pretty much useless. Elizibeth's moves look like they take *several seconds* to fire up, so I'm pretty sure that nobody is going to be hit by those if they've played the game ever.
Or maybe it's time for the fighting games to ditch their decades-old and antiquated control paradigms, which were neither designed for modern control inputs nor are not the least bit accessible. But if they did that, then the fighting game community would have to get used to battles having an emphasis on strategy and timing over blunt memorization of convoluted Move Lists and input strings.lol i trol u
But if they did that, then the fighting game community would have to get used to battles having an emphasis on strategy and timing over blunt memorization of convoluted Move Lists and input stringsThis is terribly disingenuous, though. Do you think anybody who plays a character for more than a day doesn't know all the moves? Do you think all those tournament matches came down to who memorized the moves better? Most 2D fighter characters have like, 3-5 special moves and maybe as many super moves. I believe that you can handle that much.
It's interesting that just about every gaming genre has adapted over the years to new audiences and new ideas except fighting games.Fighting games have evolved, you just refuse to see it. How are they so popular now? I gloat regularly of their success over point and click adventure games.
Well, if BlazBlue is any indication, I get the feeling there will be some kind of Hyper Cancel into the Instant Kill Moves that doesn't allow the opponent a chance to get out of the way in time.Correct me if I'm wrong, but in BlazBlue, you can only do it on match point, opponent <35% life, full meter, have a burst, and only on Tuesdays and Thursdays? That kind of offsets things. I seriously wouldn't get too spooked about being instant killed in Persona. Maybe just in HnK ;D

Y'know how whenever you were 8 years old, you had the best idea for a game? You'd scribble down on paper all the character designs (fully detailed with your range of 16 colouring-in pencils), and the cool powers they had and when you started to think of how the game would actually play, you got bored and went back to playing Killer Instinct instead?
Ed Boon is living our childhood dreams.
I'm not at liberty to discuss details, but creating and putting out any content on PS3/X360 is a very complex process. There are half a dozen companies which have a key role in the process and if even one of them gets out of synch with the rest it can slow things down. There were some synch issues. Good news is they seem to have all been resolved last week and the patch is going to start the testing and bug fixing process this week. This means it will still be several weeks before the patch goes live as even if everything goes perfectly (i.e. there are no bugs found during testing which need to be fixed) it takes at least 4 weeks from the time a patch starts testing to when it goes live through XBL/PSN. If there are bugs found which need to be fixed, that will add additional time. As for the PC version, much of the work done on the patch goes into the code base for the PC, so due to this and the fact that it is a small dev team, they need to fix all the bugs in the patch before they can move on to PC specific work.
We like the rest of the Skullgirls community wish both the patch and PC version could have been released much sooner, unfortunately, as usually happens in game development, things end up taking longer than you originally think it will.
A rare and exotic arcade stick, the one I've always wanted (since 3 months ago anyway). Let's get her out of that box...

I think Microsoft's fuckery would explain why the old games haven't been ported to XBLA.
Man, there are still at least two HUD elements that I don't even have the slightest idea about. I couldn't beat the rapid cancel tutorial and haven't tried any tutorials past that yet. Beating the story mode seems feasible and maybe I'll find something less completely absurd to play by the time I've finished the game.

The Evo build leaked and I'm playing it. Might stream around 1 am pst!Just gotta say I don't really agree with you doing this and also that most of that build is dated now but I guess have fun playing it.
So anyone play Sony All-stars yet?
How viable are they if I got really good at understanding the universal mechanics of the game? Right now I can barely remember move lists so I got a ways to go.
Most importantly when I am being over run I just don't know what to do. I feel helpless. Used to feel like that in SC but eventually started to understand things. I don't get exactly when to push directions and buttons so I get up immediately with a block or roll away fast and stuff like that. Any tips?

SC5 didn't make it not even an year old, Skullgirlz and Playstation ALL-star were left out as well. One of these is getting in with the vote thingy! There are just too many good games now. I'm pretty sure there will be side tournaments for anything else a decent number of people want to play...
Surprised Injustice didn't make the list, best way to promote an game is to have competitions IMO.Well, it only comes out like two months before Evo and might not even turn out to be good. But it might get voted in anyway, or Warner could just buy it in with boob cancer money. But like, Evo isn't there to *promote* games, really, as suspicious as I am of MrWizard getting trucks full of McRibs
Can any game be suggested? If I had the money I would put $10,000 towards Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf for the NES.IIRC you could nominate anything during some nomination phase they did through facebook, and if it got 500 people to support it, it got included in this phase.
Melee and Brawl would both be far better choices than Skullgirls. They are better games and would draw more interest in players and viewers.
Brawl is a good game, it gets hated on by people who suck and can't adapt. As for the Smash games in general, the best (and really, only) rule set is all weapons/stages/characters unlocked and free to use. Anything else is BS and does not show who the best player is.
Windows Movie Maker doesn't take good time :cool;Already gots, sir!
In the news: Ocremix has a new fightgame album with the games featured in APEX. Gets it!
I liked SUPER better when he wasn't all about the money.

All I know is, both games suck.Damn, and I thought I was the fighting game elitist terrorist guy. I at least like Melee!
See that a bunch of people who don't like change keep whining. In every important way, Brawl is a better game than Melee. I don't want the developers to listen to delusional people who don't like things being improved.
Worse balance? LOL. And the random slips were really rare (and had little impact on matches).
Yeah, I certainly hope that the Smash Wii U devs are paying attention to this!
Oh yes, I'm sure Sakurai is going to base all his decisions on the fact that a small group of people who make up less then 1% of the overall Smash Bros fanbase like Melee more then Brawl. And yes it is less then 1% of the overall fanbase.
Smash Bros Brawl - 11 million copies
1% of 11 million = 110,000 people
So if 1% of the Smash Bros audience payed a dollar, they would have raised $110,000. Considering the Melee fans didn't raise that much, it shows less then 1% of the overall audience gives a **** about tournament fighting. When you take into account that the majority of people giving money to Melee were spending way more then $1, that shows even less of the already less then 1% of the Smash Bros audience cares about tournaments.
If you can't see that Brawl is poorly balanced I'm not sure we're playing the same game.
I'm not sure what kind of point you're trying to make here. You think it's a good idea to ignore feedback from the fans, especially the ones that understand the game best? That tournament guys are literally the only people that care about good design? You just want to type "1%" as much as possible?
Only the tournament players don't understand the game the best. Tournament players play Smash Bros in a way the average Smash fan doesn't, and yet they act like the next game should be tailored to their every need. Yes you guys have the right to your opinions of the series, but you have to realize you're in a minority of the overall massive audience Smash Bros appeals to.Pro players also play wet and sloppy item matches with their friends at home. I like to set all bob-ombs sometimes. But, I'm sure you understand why people don't really want to do that when money's on the line.
See that a bunch of people who don't like change keep whining. In every important way, Brawl is a better game than Melee. I don't want the developers to listen to delusional people who don't like things being improved.EFF THE PO-LEESE.
>"people who don't like change keep whining"
>they literally make homebrew patches to try to improve Brawl
Stay free TJ Spyke
tournament players understand how to abuse glitches for their own gainIf you can't see that Brawl is poorly balanced I'm not sure we're playing the same game.
And yet it's still better balanced then Melee in basic play. For basic play in Melee, the fast characters like Fox, Marth and Sheik, completely dominate everyone else. The only way slower characters stand a chance is by taking advantage of Wave Dashing and L-Canceling which the average person knows nothing about. Brawl on the other hand at least as a much better variety of characters that are equal on basic level play.
This is why Melee might be more balanced for the tournament players because characters have more glitches to take advantage of, but Brawl is easily the more balanced game for everyone else.I'm not sure what kind of point you're trying to make here. You think it's a good idea to ignore feedback from the fans, especially the ones that understand the game best? That tournament guys are literally the only people that care about good design? How do the patches make it more like Melee?
edit: redacted because I want to see SixthAngel try to answer
We are talking about Project M fan patches right? I'm not even sure why you even asked this question, M stands for Melee.
Just go to the website and click about. Take for example the Project Goal "Project M hopes to achieve a game similar to Super Smash Bros. Melee in many respects. .......In short, Project M aims to capture the essence of what made Melee a truly great game in our eyes. " The goal of the project was to make Brawl more like Melee. They have added in a few other things but whole idea and purpose is to "capture the essence of what made Melee a truly great game in our eyes. "
Is it sad I'm more interested in the girls than the gameplay for Skullgirls?Isn't that the whole point of the Dead or Alive series?

When people in Tekken constantly sweep me before I can get up. I have to do a quick get up/roll/whatever and low block right? Sometimes I swear their attacks move so much faster than my character can even attempt to get up.Sometimes you can roll away, sometimes you can get up and block in time, sometimes you can't do anything. Sometimes you can hit a kick button to get up and give them the business. It really depends on each situation.
Also I want to get up with a kip up. That's what I call it in real life, where you spring up on both feet kicking at the same time. How do I do that? Hold back and both kicks when I hit the ground?Hold forward when you get knocked back, before you hit the ground 8)
