3DS Metroid Announcement Coming?
« on: January 16, 2011, 09:34:19 PM »

A British TV celebrity hints at the possibility.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rumor/24736

A Twitter conversation between British television celebrity Jonathan Ross and a follower may have inadvertantly leaked the announcement of a new Metroid game for the Nintendo 3DS, to be revealed during Wednesday's press event for the system.

Ross announced that he would be part of the European press event this coming week, and briefly discussed how much he liked the 3D effects of the handheld.  Followers then began asking him about the event and what might be unveiled, with one mentioning that he was going to "keep his fingers crossed for Metroid".  To this Ross responded: "I think you're going to be pleased then...", without offering any further details.

Does this mean a 3DS Metroid game will be announced?  Nobody knows, but it's safe to assume that, as a celebrity involved with the planning of the event, Ross is at least partially aware of what's going to be shown to the European press.

The European 3DS press reveal is scheduled for Wednesday, January 19, with a 3DS preview event being held in New York City on the same day.

UPDATE: In a follow-up posting Ross stated "A few other faves coming as well - plus a few unexpected revivals!! Can say no more, sorry."

UPDATE 2: Ross confirms that he was not referring to a Metroid title, but rather the general games list.

If this does turn out to be true this coming Wednesday, what kind of Metroid game would you guys like it to be?

Personally I'm hoping for a proper Metroid Prime/Hunters game on the 3DS, and by that I mean a fully-featured single-player campaign akin to the first Prime game, coupled with online versus play. Maybe some cool use of the StreetPass feature too.

I'd like it to be a sidescrolling Metroid, but that doesn't seem like a very good way to show off the 3D capabilities of the hardware.

I could handle a side-scrolling retro-style Metroid with 3D elements (monsters coming out of the background, depth-of-field, etc.).

I don't believe this. That dude's probably just messing with us.

I am surprised that there might be some new game announcements at this event, though. I figured it would just be 3DS North American/European release dates with playable demos for all the games we're aware of.

Actually, what are the odds there might be a title or two announced that was developed for the US (EU?) launch by one of Nintendo's American developers?

Well if its true I hope its an evolution of M:OM. There is no point in chasing Super Metroid and there are enough Prime games already. I loved M:OM and hold no nostalgia value or ties to the franchise so I'm sure in the minority. I doubt this is true anyways,

Aren't their only American developers NST and Retro Studios?

Could be something from Factor5 or whatever they are called now.

Nintendo is pretty damn secretive and could have any number of games in development in EUR/US that we wouldn't know about till they were announced. Or atleast we can hope, this system was made with input from all the 3rd party devs that Nintendo wanted input from, so who knows what else could be up their sleeve that wasn't ready to be announced before the show.

Whatever this game ends up being, I really hope it isn't going to one of these following titles:

1) Metroid Prime Hunters 2
2) Metroid Other M 2
3) Metroid Pinball 2

Anything else is fine.

Given the right circumstances, I wouldn't mind any of those.

I'm extremely excited at this prospect, but in a broader sense, I'll be very glad if Nintendo announces anything at these events that is more directed at Western audiences. Metroid would definitely fit the bill.

After reading more of the Twitter back-and-forth leading up to this remark, I'm a bit skeptical of what this guy knows. Some follower of his mentioned how he wanted Ocarina of Time and Nintendogs + Cats at launch, and Ross replies, "Have they all been announced?" Hmm.  Then says, "A few other faves coming as well -- plus a few unexpected revivals!"  I bet he's talking about Kid Icarus and/or Pilotwings, and thinks the gaming public isn't aware of these even if they are.  The Metroid comment is certainly enticing, but I'm just not sure how much stock we can put in this dude's off-handed Tweet.  A bit unsettling, actually, that tweets are becoming the source for "News" items on websites.

Metroid Dread 3DS?

It's just depressing to think how awesome yet how incredibly unlikely that would be.

For the record though, I think this guy is full of ****. Why the hell would they announce this now when there's pretty much no chance it's coming any time soon? Even the exact same announcement would carry so much more weight at E3.

So a British celebrity knows about that stuff when Nintendo notoriously won't even clue in their European branch on things like that beforehand?

Anyway, I think Metroid needs a major overhaul, re-using the same old powerups just removes a large chunk of the discovery aspect.

I agree with that.  I was thinking that a really good Metroid game would probably sell me on a 3DS.  But I no longer can trust that "Metroid" = good.  I would have to wait for reviews and impressions of such a game.  That's a real bummer.  It used to be that any Metroid game was a must-own.  Come to think of it the DS Zeldas have made it so I can't trust Zelda anymore either and Mario always had too many spin-offs to completely trust.  So what Nintendo franchise do I trust?  Pikmin?

I like Metroid Prime but I would be skeptical of a Metroid Prime not made by Retro.  Even if they announced Metroid Prime 4, if it had a different dev I would have to wait and see.

Everyone on this forum is going to hate me for saying this but I would mind a Metroid: Other M sequel on the 3DS, but done right. I thought that game was pretty good and I hope to see more like it in the future. Although a 2D hybrid between Fusion and Other M would be even nicer.

I think Nindendo needs to move the Metroid franchise forward. Prime was a good side-track, but I really wanna see a return to 2D side-scrolling. The gap between Metroid IV (Fusion) and V (Dread?) has gotten big enough, damnit!

And Ian, yes. You trust Pikmin. . .if Pikmin 3 ever comes out.

For me that depends on what "done right" means. I don't think Metroid is done right unless there's a large interconnected world that you explore, using upgrades that change the way you play the game from combat to basic movement.

I don't consider the Pirme games a side-track, I see them as the evolution of the series. It would be like saying the 3D Mario's are just a side-track.
