Hittin' the trail...the Oregon Trail that is!
« on: December 30, 2009, 12:41:56 PM »
I downloaded the game the other day, mainly due to my fond childhood memories.  I planned on playing it for a few minutes on the drive home from work and ended up playing for most of the night.  Nothing about the game is difficult although I am playing on normal difficulty, as hard and extreme were locked from the start.  The first stops on the trail are all training mode events anyway to show you how each mini game works.  On each loading screen, there are bits of trivia and history lessons.  Great stuff for kids and ill-informed adults such as myself.

Sadly, I lost my youngest daughter Cammy when a Bald Eagle swooped in and carried her off "Never to be seen or heard from again."  This happened real early in the game and I didn't realize I was supposed to shoot it to keep my family safe.  The bird came back later to snatch up my son Guile, but this time daddy Zangief blew it out of the sky.  Mommy Rose wasn't too happy about it, which makes no sense after losing her youngest daughter.  I guess having daughter Chun Li around was enough for her.  :D

In short, a fun and educational game which isn't for everyone.  Definitely not for the 'hardcore' gamer, but a definite fun change of pace from the normal grinding of experience and shooting of people.

Who made the game?

You think this could be an attempt by Nintendo to have the DSi replace the AppleIIe in American Classrooms so they can teach the children about the wild west.

Gameloft is the publisher and The Learning Company also shows up in the opening credits so I'm assuming they're involved somehow.  I wouldn't be surprised if this is Nintendo's first step into getting the DS into schools to create a new generation of gamers fully under their command.  All lessons would be taught by a floating Dr. Kawashima head and Dr. Lobe.  How awesome would that be?

"Everyone please open your DSi's and turn it sideways into book mode"

"Roll Call is now active, everyone look into your cameras and say 'Here' "

"The test time is over, everyone please put your stylus' down"

I could see it happening.

This is yet another reason why I need to break down and drop $170 on a DSi.

Isn't though.  Not to long ago, my Street Fighter family was running down the trail and they said the following:

Mama Rose: "I wonder why Cammy isn't talking to me?"
Daddy Zangief: "She probably doesn't like you."
Mama Rose: "But why?"

:confused; This game is an unintentional riot.  Also, Guile and Chun Li got dysentery, but survived after a days rest.  Whew!

More awesome.

Gee, did the original game on the Apple IIe let you name your family members? I don't remember...

Yes, which made it all the more shocking when people discovered your family could die in the game.

I named my family in the game after Star Wars members and got all upset when R2-D2 and C-3PO caught malaria and other diseases and died. I remember grumbling to the teacher about how 'droids don't get diseases'.

Ran into a stranger on the side of the road asking for a ride.  Zangief turns him down and Rose calls him mean.  Run into another guy later and give him a ride.  Rose yells and Zangief for putting the family in danger and Guile complains that the man stinks.

I think the original PC games are now considered abandonware and you can get them for free. If not, then you are bound to run across a copy at garage sales and flea markets if you look long enough.

But I'm sure the DSi version is better because it is portable, and of course more modern.
