TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Gives First Details Of Nintendo Switch
« on: October 20, 2016, 12:01:12 PM »
I suspected this would be a problem as soon as the rumors started to solidify, but if my daughter and I are traveling together and want to play Nintendo games on the go, I guess we both have to have Switches?  As long as the 3DS continues to be supported, this might not be an issue, but if there is a future where the Switch is the only Nintendo 'game in town' for both console and portable play, I guess I should start saving now...

Also, I haven't gone back to watch the video so maybe I missed something, but has touch screen (even optionally) been confirmed?  (No possibility for another Picross 3D!) It did look like dual-screen has died for this generation (sniff!).

I found this video about disabling auto-sleep on external hard drives through the Wii U.  Perhaps this is something everyone already knew how to do, but if not:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4EZfdyMngA

I'm trying it now--only 2 hours and 45 minutes to go (+install time) until I know for sure...!

Looking into it some more, you are likely right.  I am running a 'WD MyBook' hard drive and from what I am reading the sleep function is built into the firmware and cannot be shut off (without writing code on the computer, but that won't work with the Wii U). In the 'almost successful' attempt, I kept touching the game pad screen every two minutes or so or playing virtual console games for the entire time... and then I dozed off with 10 minutes to go and woke to find the error message.  If other people have been able to do this, I will try again.  Very frustrating.  The only saving grace is that I couldn't actually be playing the game yet, anyway. Thanks for the response.

Hey guys--a little off topic from the main discussion, but I'm having a problem that I can't figure out. I bought Xenoblade Chronicles X and am trying to preload it in anticipation of the release date.  I have tried to download and install the game 4 times now and each time I have experienced an error at different stages (the last time, it had downloaded and was 10 minutes from completing its install).  Every time I get an error, the WiiU makes me delete the download and restart all over again--since it is a 20 GB game and a 2.5 hour download, you can imagine how frustrating this is.  I don't necessarily expect a solution to this problem from this forum, but I would like to know if anyone else is experiencing this problem?  Or if anyone has successfully downloaded and preloaded the game?  I would suspect my external hard drive, but it has performed flawlessly up to this point for the last 2.5 years.  Any insight you can provide would be much appreciated!  Thanks.

Here is the first course I was willing to upload.  I made it to challenge my 7-year old.

TalkBack / Re: Duck Hunt (Wii U VC) Review Mini
« on: January 08, 2015, 02:07:38 PM »
Thanks for the mini-review!  It has been so long since I played the game on the NES.  When I played the WiiU version, it seemed so much easier and I just thought I had gotten a lot better.  You nailed it with the crosshairs-thing, though.  I also noticed the hit detection was a bit off.  Still great for the nostalgia-factor.  And I am crossing my fingers for a 'Hogan's Alley' release...

TalkBack / Re: Professor Layton and the Lapsed Gamers
« on: August 28, 2014, 07:50:53 PM »
Thanks for writing this editorial.  I had thought maybe it was just me.  I flew through the first four games, shuffled through the fifth one, and am limply staggering through this last one.  I can't point my finger to any one thing about it, but I am just struggling to reach any sort of rhythym.  For one thing, I feel like the little things are really weighing on me--do I really need to clear a note EVERY time I find a hint coin?  Isn't the appearance of the coin enough in this sixth iteration?  I also feel like the spacing of the puzzles in the 3D versions are too sparse (or perhaps because of the richer environments I just feel like I am hunting and pecking a lot more in-between puzzles).  Lastly, never a fan of the mini-games, I feel like I am now being 'mini-gamed' to death.  I love Layton, but I would not be sad if this were the last time we see him or his cronies in this format for quite a while...

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 380: Will the Circle Be Not Broken
« on: May 02, 2014, 09:58:46 AM »
I would like to comment on the '$45' Mario Golf (with DLC).  What bothers me so much is not that they might be shorting us in the original package in order to sell us something that they would have otherwise included, but that they are doing that AND the DLC is system-locked.  My 6-year old daughter and I both have 3DS systems.  For a game such as this, I would normally buy a cartridge so that she and I could share the game.  In this case, though, if I want to play the extra courses and she wants to play as the alternate character, I would have to purchase the DLC on both machines.  (Or we could exchange systems once one of us has finished with the DLC, but mine is an XL with loaded games I can't be without and hers is a regular with very little software installed.)  Frustrating!

I haven't reached the prediction portion of the podcast yet, but I did want to comment on the (brief) discussion of Bravely Default--can the completion time really be 30 hours when the demo takes almost ten to fully complete?  If the full game is only 3x as long as the demo, I might be disappointed (as much as I am anticipating this game).

This is a fair review.  I loved the demo (although found the gameplay at the beginning a bit obtuse).  What I really like is that now the name makes complete sense (glad they dropped the flying fairy).  Can't wait for this game.

Does this include digital sales?  If not, does this number have much relevance at all?

TalkBack / Re: Fire Emblem Awakening Team Discusses Casual Mode
« on: April 03, 2013, 08:49:42 PM »
To me, the benefit of casual mode is not the elimination of permadeath, but the ability to save anywhere.  This greatly increased the ability to experiment and maximize characters and character relationships.  I played on casual mode but committed to not losing anyone.  I played each level until I had recruited all recruitable characters, saved everyone that needed saving, and made sure all my characters had survived.  But I saved after turns like crazy.

They had me at 'Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes'-like game play.  Unfortunately, I agree with you that it is altogether too frantic and gives the player no sense of accomplishment.  Even if they had given you a break to recover between day/night cycles so that you could reflect on what had just happened and think about what worked and what didn't it might have been better.  Ultimately, I got about an hour of enjoyment out of this game and I agree with your review that the game is mediocre at best (but could have been so much more with only a few tweaks).

TalkBack / Re: Mahjong 3D - Warriors of the Emperor Review
« on: January 19, 2013, 07:56:01 PM »
I love this game so much--but I also agree with this review.  The controls were sometimes frustrating, particularly in the 'debate' mode or when time was of the essence.  And the straight down 3D sometimes made it difficult to see a move.  Also, unlike the reviewer, I did run into time problems in later territories (I am at 97% complete in the story mode and likely to stay there because the time challenges became more frustrating than fun).  Still, I sank 10-12 hours into it, so it is well worth the price if you like Mahjong.

I am Tween20.  Please feel free to friend me, too.  I have never been much into community gaming, but I feel like the WiiU is my tipping point.  Love the Miiverse already!

I now have played the demo twice through.  Other than some camera angle issues, I really enjoyed it and can't wait to see more.  Will be interested to see how robust the single player campaign is--I have not been much of a group-gamer thus far and I know that multi-player gaming is sort of the intent of HoR.

TalkBack / Re: NWR Staff's Favorite 10 Games of 2011
« on: January 02, 2012, 09:51:00 AM »
The combat is way overboard. General enemies should not be this difficult or frequent.

I don't have the experience that you do in this genre, but I did not find it to be so.  If I needed experience, I fought.  If not, I ran.  And I enjoyed the puzzle aspect of figuring out how to multiply hits, so it never seemed so burdensome. Thanks again for the recommendation.

Of all the game I have played on the recommendation of NWR (and RFN in particular), this is the one I appreciate the most.  The set-up and execution of this game is perfect.  Definitely one of my favorite games of the year, and perhaps on the entire DS.

TalkBack / Re: NES Ambassador Games Slowly Rolling Out in North America
« on: August 31, 2011, 10:09:56 PM »
Seriously, it may be because I never lived in the NES period, but I find almost all of these games just unbearably bad. Now I know they aren't considered bad games but I just find them horrible. DX

I grew up in the NES era, but haven't been back to the originals since.  I still love the games (required by law), but I forgot how unforgivingly balls-hard some of them could be!

Got my first two Street Passes today (walking for AIDS in New York, but I must have missed the whole group unless there were only two of them).  So excited!  I now realize I need a catchier greeting phrase.

Do you think that if I had actually said that I could get on the box cover for the next M&M?

Listening to the podcast right now--just wanted to say that I think that Jonny has given up on M&M:CofH too soon.  I played PQ (actually, ironically, based on Jonny's recommendation way back when) and it has been my go-to-game when I don't have anything new on the DS.  I also love M&M and find it to be an overall different experience that has echoes of PQ, but is, on the whole, much more fresh and intellectual.  I am nearing the end and am already looking forward to starting it again.  If only there were some way to demo... <sigh>  Don't bypass M&M for fear that it will be too much like PQ.

Thank you!  I finally got the Djinn (more luck than skill, I think) and I have made some progress and am finding it hard to put down now that I feel the end coming.  I agree with you that the Djinn is not so good--I prefer the mages.  My favorite elite unit of all so far is the <succubus?>--the ones that throw a series of fireballs and take out surrounding units, too.

Okay, I am nearing the end and it was awesome, right up until I hit the academy.  What is with Nadia?  Am I just really bad at this game all of the sudden or did the battles just get wicked hard?  I'm probably not the best player, but I have held my fair share and then some up until this point--now I can't beat opponents that are two levels lower than me.  Any pointers on how best to use the wizard-units (I only have the mage, I can't get far enough in to get the djinn) would be greatly appreciated.

I really like the puzzle battles, too--you get to practice your skills and build up your resources without risking losing elite or champion elements.

My one complaint about the champions (besides the fact that they take so long to deliver their turn--which cuts both ways, since the opponents do, too) is that mine always seem to be delivered in some sort of blocked formation whereas the opponents are usually delivered well set-up.  I don't think that is really true, but that is how it seems to me!

I wish there were a (once per battle perhaps) 'undo' button.  I use a combination of buttons and stylus and sometimes one doesn't know what the other is doing and I move or destroy units I didn't mean to.  Kind of like the accidental 'illegal moves' in PQ:CotW.
