Apparently he was sicker than was let on. Such sad news, he was a legend and will be missed.

It can't be stated enough: Mr. Iwata made a dream in to his reality. He started as a game developer at a Japanese start-up, exhibited managerial skill to guide HAL Laboratories to solvency, became the first non-Yamauchi president of Nintendo, and still found time to assist in games at an individual or coding level.
