Get DSi, or wait for DS2?
« on: February 25, 2009, 01:33:11 PM »
Well, I used to think waiting for the DSi was the thing to do, but now I'm not quite so sure anymore. While I'm sure that this new model will breath new life into the DS and probably increase its lifespan by another year or two, its also true that Nintendo has to be working on a proper successor at this point. Right?

Plus the $169 price tag seems steep for a rehash of a system that's now over 4 years old. When the old DS Phat launched the price was $149, so its difficult to rationalize rebuying a system at this point in its life for MORE than it cost when it was originally launched. And then theres the matter of the loss of the GBA slot and all that peripherals and stuff that required it.

So my question is, is it worth it? Or should I just wait?
is your sanity...

I'm buying one because I gave my DS Lite to my brother. I won't miss the GBA slot which is the only negative (if you consider it one) unless you balk at the price, but I think its fair.

A true successor to DS will probably land sometime in 2011 at this rate. That's plenty of time to enjoy DSi.

This.  I'm still sporting my DS Heavy, so I'm going to upgrade to the DSi when it comes out.  However, if you already have a DSL then it might not be worth it unless you want some of the downloadable titles.

I'm really holding out hope that the downloadable games will make this TOTALLY worth it.

So yeah, I say buy it.

In my opinion, why WOULDN'T nintendo start a portable virtual console now that they totally have the means to do so.

I'd really love a VP (Virtual portable) on DSi considering how bad the piracy is on gameboy games of any kind, also Game Gear and Neo Geo Pocket Color would be awesome on it

I will be leaving for Korea in July, so I am going to get a DSi to entertain me...I wonder if that means I will be able to download Japan's DSi Ware?

Well, if you're really interested in the DSi's features, there are any DSiWare games which you are just dying to play, and you don't have any GBA games, then I'd say buy the DSi if you have the money. Or if your current DS breaks, that might be a good reason too. If that's not the case, then wait for DS2 as I'm sure all of the truly great DS games will still be playable on the DS/Lite.

If you're okay with DSi getting replaced by a true DS successor in a 2-3 years, by all means, get it. There's some serious rumorage of PSP2 coming out this year, but nothing is stopping the DS juggernaut. DSware and the inevitability of DSi only games will likely make this a worthy purchase.

you know i might get it, not for myself but for my girlfriend. i really have been trying to get her into games. I have come to the conclusion she won't budge from being a casual gamer. I can giver her the best games on the market but she won't enjoy it. (metroid zero mission, mario 3 she didn't get into. I lent her zelda LTTP but she hasn't played it yet)

However Brain Age 2 is something she did play and enjoyed. I totally see her enjoying Animal Crossing and other casual games like cooking mama and such.

I can buy it for her, but also download games for me and we can share it .

It's an idea. I'm sort of interested in some of the DSi games like Wario Ware and maybe some occasional DSi Downloads.

I don't know, right now it just doesn't seem worth it.

I can't determine if the DSi is another quick iteration of the hardware while Nintendo toils on something else or if it's a device that will extend the life of the DSi for years to come. I personally don't see DSiWare as a reason to upgrade if you already own a DS. Look at WiiWare's current library. If the Wii didn't have WiiWare and Nintendo decided to release a version of the Wii that had it, would you upgrade your Wii? I probably wouldn't. A few hits wouldn't justify buying similar hardware.

DSiWare will probably only have gimmicky software, not hit titles. I don't think publishers would want to alienate the rest of the DS install base.

All that being said I'm buying a DSi. I haven't owned a handheld since the GameBoy Color, but with the list of games I'm missing out on and my need to reexperience portable gaming I caved under the pressure.

One plus I just thought of could be a higher Wi-Fi security setting. As of now you have to set your router pretty low to get the DS on board. The Wii has a higher security limit. This could make it so that I can raise my encryption level even to a more comfortable level.

Even still, I think that I'll need multiple 'must-buys' to convince me to upgrade. Strong DSiWare support is a must.

From what I've read about the upgraded security settings, there will be six slots to store information.  Three will support WPA, WPA2 etc. while the other three will still only support WEP like the old DS.  Unfortunately only the DS browser and DSware will be able to use the first three "upgraded" slots while regular DS games will use the "old" three slots which only use WEP.

I myself won't be getting a DSi anytime soon as I can't justify the hefty price tag while my DS lite still works fine.

I should have expected that for existing DS games since the networking code was always on the game card, but I hope that new DS titles will be able to use the advanced settings.  If not, then I'll definitely be waiting for a killer app before I upgrade.

This will extend the DS' life to Holiday 2010, when the next handheld will be released. It just makes sense.

I think Nintendo may want to extend this to 2011...if Nintendo could get another 3 years out of the DS brand that would be good.  But realistically 2010 may be the target date.

It all depends on DSi sales. As the recent thread about Iwata Asks shows, they were working on DSi in 2007. They are already working on DS2 or whatever the next hand-held hardware will be. If DS Lite and DSi sales soar, it will be a while. If sales begin to tank or even taper off, then we'll see it sooner. Japan will be the deciding factor as well. DS didn't need a boost in the States yet because Japan DS sales were slumping they pushed out the DSi. I'm also willing to bet that the new DS will not be out before Dragon Quest 9 since that will be a system seller.

About the only reason I have to consider the DSi right now is that my DS Phat's battery isn't holding a charge as long as it used to. Then again, I could just track down a new battery for a lot cheaper.

I'll give it a year or so once it's out here. I'm really curious on the DSiware seeing how they seem to think the applications will make this thing the gamer's Blackberry. Now if it offered a wifi instant messenger application, that would be cool.

DS sales were already great before the DSi came out (which is why Reggie didn't want to release the DSi to come out until this Fall). I can't see the successor to the system coming out anytime soon, 2011 or 2012 would be my guess.

I never got the DS Lite (I got the original, and am glad I didn't now. I will get the DSi, but I hate the $170 price point and think that is way too high.

stratos, I wouldn't be so sure. Dragon Warrior VII came out on the PS1 in Japan 5 months after the PS2 came out (and in the US 13 months after the PS2 released here).

DS sales were slumping in Japan was what I meant. Japan's market controls how Nintendo typicaly operates.

If the game takes long enough, sure, but I would bet Nintendo sees how much of a boon DQ9 will be for the system sales. Also, PS1 & PS2 were designed with backwards compatibility in mind. It was a selling point of the PS2. We don't know if Nintendo would want to do that with the DS and DS2.

Nintendo has made sure to have their handhelds be BC (with the Game Boy micro and Nintendo DSi being the exceptions, but those are just new models of existing systems), so I would be shocked if their next handheld system can't play DS games.

I suppose that BC would negate the matter. Though if DQ9 does come out before the DSi then it may lengthen the life cycle with a large number of new system sales.
