With the PS3 controller, it knows how it's being tilted, rotated, twisted, and what direction it's being jerked in.

Therefore, the Wiimote+nunchuck has twice the functionality of the PS3 controller, can calculate where it's "pointing" by combining distance data with 3D-orientation data, and is generally much more natural to swing, whereas the PS3 controller can only be easily jerked and rotated, not swung.

I think you might be right that the pointer function could track 3D position as long as it is pointed at the sensor...which sort of sucks in a way but, hey, its hard to get too upset about this given all Nintendo has put into this thing.  I really like how you summed up why the Wiimote is better.  The one last peice of the puzzle missing for me is the controller shell.  Is this still happening or is it only the virtual console controller now?

Well, it's not like I've read the article or anything, but here's what my mind is thinking at this moment:

The PS3 controller tilts.  That's it.  It's like they stuck a few Twisted cartidges in there facing different directions and gave each other high fives.

The Rev controller also does that.  But that's not all!  There are other fabulous prizes for those of you playing at home.  Acceleromters (in the nunchuck too, don't forget!) sense actual lateral movement in any direction, while the pointing mechanism turns the Wiimote into a laser-pointer.  Putit all together and you can get a device which can simulate 3D positioning, pointing, and tiliting.  You won't be able to put the Wiimote in the corner of the room, turn on the console, and have the system know where the controller is -- however, if you start at the center of the room, pointing at the center of the screen, every movement you now make can  be recorded and tracked.  So if you MOVE it to the corner of the room, the system will know where it is because it tracked you movement from the center.

Does that even make sense.  I don't know.  Maybe I should have read the article or something.  But either way, the PS3 controll does not point, which is a HUEG LIEK XBOX missing feature.

Actually the PS3 controller has an accelerometer too.  Given the Wiimote has an accelerometer is a very good indicator that it doesn't have true motion tracking because a motion tracking capability would be able to record acceleration anyway... But, like you said, if the accelerometer is sensitive and accurate enough it could, in theory, equate the relative position of the Wiimote according to where it started.  It's basically Distance = Rate X Time.  If the accelerometer is accurate and sensitive enough it could get a very good reading on the rate of movement and the direction of the movement and if they Wii uses this info, coupled with the time the movement occured then it can track the distance traveled (thus tracking the relative position).

I guess the major difference between the Wiimote and PS3 controller is the pointer device, the quality of the sensors, and the two seperate peices (both with sensing).  I can't imagine swinging the PS3 controller around and playing with it like you can with the Wiimote.

That's HUGE.

In fact, it's basically useless to have only movement, because all you can do with it is things like Kirby Tilt and Tumble.

However, with the Wiimote, it can sense movement, position, and how it's oriented. That's incredible, and that's exactly why WiiTennis is so incredible.

This is confusing to say the least.  I firmly believed that it could sense position but...this article is saying otherwise.  It is saying that the motion sensing of the Wiimote is achieved by a tilt mechanism and a 3D accelerometer...which is exactly what Sony just added to their PS3 controller.  The only other way it tracks motion that we know of is with the pointer coulpled with the sensor and from what I've heard this simply tracks which way it is pointing, not its position in 3D space.  There has been no word from Nintendo about actual 3D position tracking that I can think of and the fact that they said the sensor is to allow the pointer function to work (and not for triangulation) I'm starting to wonder if it can track 3D position at all.

4
I guess it is very much like the PS3 one...but with the pointer capability...which is probably why a lot of the games at the show were using the pointer.  To me this is dissapointing news because I thought it could be used as an extension of your hand and track the controller in 3D space but this article says it can do tilt and acceleration only  I hope that this isn't the only peice of the Wiimote puzzle and it can track in 3D or we wont be getting any real sword fighting games and such.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wii Online: Get your friend codes ready
« on: May 13, 2006, 01:16:15 PM »
Ok I didn't read all the posts but I think that Nintendo is on the right track as far as creating a safe online environment but they have overcomplicated things.  I think that with games where the possiblility of vulgar language and/or imagery is possible that all those functions should be turned off unless you have the other persons friend code.  Nintendo is pretty much doing this with games like MPH by only allowing chat with friends but allowing plain deathmatch with anyone.

The problem arrises when you have to enter a bajillionzillion friend codes for every game.  If you want a good list of say 50 codes for your game and you have 10 online games that is 500 16 digit codes...and that sucks!  They made a good argument that you may not want to have the same people on all of your games but instead of making people re enter and keep track of a different code for yourself and all you friends for every game why don't they just allow you to add a friend with a singular friend code and then as you get more games be able to go down you list and check a box that says allow/don't allow this person to be able to play with me online for that specific game.  SIMPLE!

I also hope they work on their online Wifi site...because it always gets all buggy and doesn't work half the time for me and doesn't keep my stats on all games...plus some games I can't even see when other people are online but they can see me which adds to the frustration.

anyway sorry for the rant but seeing the wonderful ideas started in THIS thread I really want Nintendo to iron out their online plans and make it all it can be.  I don't expect a direct live ripoff...and don't want that really.  I just want Nintendo to put their money where their mouth is because with all this talk of simplicity and accessibility they should at the very least have a clean and easy to use Wifi Wii interface!

Notice that Call of Duty 3, Medal of Honor Airborne, and Resident Evil games are on there.  This is very interesting to me wheither they will be scaled down versions made for the Wii controls or entiirely different experiences.  I'm guessing the RE game is infact not RE5 but something entirely different.  Hopefully it isn't a rail shooter or something and it is more like a sidestory to RE4 or something.

Was it not said the it would be a SHELL?  The the Wiimote would plug into it and the controller would retain the same motion functionality?  They also said it would be similar to wavebird.  I don't understand this choice.  To accomodate all Nintendo consoles of old and sega and tfx they need to make a SHELL that accomodates all button configs.   I'm not sure if the shell will also be used for GCN games but if it is might I suggest 6 face buttons, 2 analog sticks, 2 pressure sensitive shoulder buttons, an accessable botton z-trigger, and a comfy Dpad.  I'm confused as to what this thing is...

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Complexity...(still not enough buttons?)
« on: April 29, 2006, 10:36:14 AM »
I agree that it won't be as accurate because moving your finger to turn a digital signal on or off is basically as fast and accurate as it can get.  I do, however, think that it can make things more intuitive and perhaps faster in a different way if you don't have to think as long before doing the motion.  For example, as Trip1eX said, in Madden they are planning to use the analog to control the juking by simply moving it left or right.  I know that in games like madden, which often like to use all of the 16 or so buttons on the PS2 controller, can get very confusing and I often froze and couln't remember what buttons what when I needed to most.  Knowing that when someone comes at me all I have to do is react by moving the analog attachment in the dirrection I want to go is pretty cool.  It makes me think even my dad might be able to control it in this fashion.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Rumour: Nunchuck to have Dual 3D motion sensing
« on: April 29, 2006, 10:26:53 AM »
It all is pretty confusing.  The way I understand it is that the remote uses GYROS to record the its oriented (tilt, roll, spin, etc).  The big mystery is how it records where the controller is in 3D space.  I think that it uses triangulation of some sort and I don't think the controller has to be pointing at the TV.  The sensor on the end of the remote might just allow for the signal to be more clearly broadcast or perhaps it adds even more funtionality of a pointing feature whereas if you do point at the TV it can become even more accurate for such tasks as drawing, etc.

From what I know about accelerometers, the analog attachment will be able to detect any type of acceleration (movement) in the attachment.  I doubt, unless it has gyros,  it won't be able to detect the orientation of the analog attachment (you could face it backward and it wouldn't matter).  I wonder if they will  include tilting sensors like in Kirby's Tilt and Roll to also record tilt?  It wouldn't be as accurate as the remote obviously, but it would allow for some tilting recognition still.  Even if it is "only" the accelerometer I won't mind because what they are doing is already pretty insane IMO.

That Madden interview is excellent!  Knowing that the anolog has an accelerometer is just another thing to get me excited about...I mean I was doubting it heavily and now boom its confirmed!  I like how they talked about juking by moving the anolog controller left or right, along with a lot of the other play mechanics explaination.

12
I know the "big" secret isn't this but I do hope they have one:  a wireless headset.  I don't know why some people think a mic in the revmote would work...the wind in the mic would mess everything up if you are moving the revmote around and your distance to the mic wouldn't be close enough and would be constently changing.  This is why they need to come out with a cool little wireless headset for their wifi games.

Also, if Nintendo reveals something even close to as big as the original controller revealing then...I will be stunned.  Nintendo knows how to own E3 though and this year they already have it in the bag imo...call it a gut feeling

I hope they start out with some crazy marketing a few months before launch where they introduce everyone to Wii yet show no console or games or nothing.  What I"m talking about is show little things here and there in short commercials and other advertisements to build the brand name and get people wondering what the heck Wii is all about before they actually start showing us games, etc.  I hope that came out where you guys will understand what I'm talking about.

I guess I thought it was a little funny at first but its worn thin for me and it just keeps reminding me how they basically called a system "we"...hopefully given time I'll be able to accept this a little better.  I hate how it bugs me so much tbh.  If it keeps bugging me for a long while and I have to see the new name all over the place I might go crazy.  Anyway, feel free to keep having fun Kairon and anyone else, I'm not trying to be a party pooper or anything.

Not to pick on your Kairon, but this is something else that has been bugging me.  A lot of people are using it in place of the word "we" and that is just adding to my frustration about how hard it is for me to use the word as a pronoun and not a noun since everyone is using it as a noun...sorry about all this technical English talk but take a gander at my post a few up.  Sorry again Kairon, not meaning to pick on you and I might be one of the only one's bothered by this...

I’ve asked for opinions from my family members and most don’t seem to care much. A common reaction was, “that’s strange”. After a lot of pondering I think the awkwardness in the name is mainly due to the fact that it goes against the Enlish language. It simply isn’t natural to take a pronoun such as “we” (or he, she, they, etc.) and use it as a noun. I think it will be very difficult to train my brain that the very common word “we” can now be considered both a noun and a pronoun. It just doesn’t compute in my brain and feels…well it just feels wrong to say it.

To make sure I look at both sides, if Nintendo does somehow succeed and people beging to accept “Wii” as being both a noun and pronoun then people will then basically be saying Nintendo’s new console’s name constantly each day. You don’t see people walking around saying PS3 this PS3 that without even knowing it

The "ii" spelling is intended to represent "both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play." It may also be worth noting that "ii" means "good" in Japanese.

Wii is the first console that's name contains one syllable.

The name said together sounds like Ninten Dowey or Nintendo "E", just like games that have the obvious Nintendo touch are "Nintendoy".

Nintendo Wii shortened names?
NW
NE
NinWii
DoWii

I'm having a lot of trouble with this name.  I honestly wish they would have stuck with Revolution but if this is what we are stuck with lets work with it.

I have to agree with you.  The game does look good and has some pretty cool particle fx going on there but it doesn't really strike me as "next gen" or "bleeding edge" graphics.  It looks more to me like a souped up Gamecube in the graphics department and I really doubt it will even come close to PS3 or 360 quality graphics, HD or no HD.  That being said though, I don't see why the games can't still look good and feature some cool tech.  I can't say that I'm entirely dissapointed because all I've been hearing for the longest time is it will be a weakling in the tech department so this was expected...but I do deep down wish it could have the best of both worlds (awsome tech and innovation).

Looks great. Am Hyped. Ubi art touch-up in effect. Real game looks less good. Still excited. No damage control here. Just in talking to friends in the press who have seen actual screens of the game, they confirm as much. Again, I am still excited to see what Ubi does with this game. As an fps nut, I see lots of potential here.

UPDATE #2 - Prince NineOne1 is a team member of Ubisoft that has been known to post on IGN’s forums. His job status has been 100% confirmed by IGN. Having said that, Prince NineOne1 has commented on the screeshots of Red Steel, trying to squash rumors that these are artwork, or renders. Click the thumb below to check it out.

Said thumb:  HERE

I not exactly sure what to think.  Would Nintendo allow the first shots to be released by a thrid party and then allow them to doctor them as our first impression of the Rev when they very well know that they would just be raising our expectations only to crush them in almost exactly one month?  The answer SHOULD be a big ol' "NO!".  I'm fully expecting these screens to be a fairly good representation of what they will look like in the finalized game.  Maybe a bit better, maybe a bit worse, but for the most part it will look about the same.  And on that note:  this game is looking to be pretty damn awsome!

EDIT!:  Just found this post started by NineOne1 himself on the IGN forums.  If you can see them go HERE

Going to read through it and his other posts to find more and will add in some quotes here.

EDIT 2: some quotes from NineOne1's thread:

Well guys, I'll be honest...I wasn't sure how people would react to a new game that was not 1st party or an existing brand.

I want to thank you for keeping an open-mind and supporting 3rd Party Developers like Ubisoft.

Alright I need to go to bed but here is what is going through my head right now (which I already posted @ gonintendo.com):

What gets me is why would someone under an NDA, with their job on the line, leak this information to one of the biggest game-related sites on the web?  Why would Nintendo put all this time and money into R&D and not even produce a graphics card that could utilize the newest shader funcitons and whatnot to help with graphics and ease system strain?  How in the world could they stress to no end that gameplay is #1 and not discuss/acknowledge that CPU performance has to do with MANY aspects of a game that directly affect GAMEPLAY (ai, physics, framerate, etc.)  Would this create similar gameplay limitations due to hardware specs, just with a new way of controlling those limited characters/objects?

These are but many of the questions that are frantically buzzing around in my head.  I'm sorry if I've been a bit negative for some of you to handle but these are all legit things I think Nintendo will have to explain and/or justify somehow.  I already know I'm getting the console, I just am now worried this choice in hardware power might unessarily limit the creative freedom and potential of the Revmote.  It almost seems with such an intuitive device that it is almost begging for some decent power to back it up!

--anyway I'll post again tomorrow when I can think more logically (2:30am now)

I don't like that design.  What's the point?  Instead of pushing a button I flick my wrist?  How is this any better than what I had before?  The whole thing just reaks of g!mmick if all they do is assign what used to be a button push to a gesture.  It's basically the exact same thing as before only the new way causes arm fatigue.  If they're going to use the remote they should use it right and put it to use in a way that couldn't be replicated with anything else.

Well first of all that was simply a suggestion.  After reading the comments about it I think that the bad probably outway the good in approaching the jump control in this fashion.  The points made about the possible fatigue that could occur and, especially, the point made about the lack of accuracy when compared to a button are very good arguments.  I can also, however, see the other side of the argument.  It could free up buttons and also  be more intuitive (move revmote up and mario jumps up),

It also seems quite a few of us agree that the levels should be more linear and with a specific goal at the end.  SMS was indeed more open ended, causing me to get lost or confused as to what I was supposed to do.  This is not what I think mario games are all about.  Like the submissions in SMS and the bowser levels in SM64 I would be floored if they made the new mario like the old school games with a ton of linear levels where you know where you must go and the challenge is in getting from "A" to "B".  SMS was  a bit to much like an adventure game and not enough like a straight up platformer.

One other thing is I want there to be a good range of difficulty from easy levels all the way to the very difficult.  I do think its important for everyone to be able to play but I think that at the very least some optional levels of great difficulty should be put in or perhaps special rewards for quicker times.  There is nothing like a good challenge and some of those submissions in SMS really started to head in the right direction.
