It's a good thing that Nintendo's Wii is selling strong in ALL markets, because the increasing console irrelevance of the Japanese Market could weaken any company that relies on it (in this case, Sony) and strength any company that traditionally isn't strong there *coughMicrosoftcough*.

Just putting it out there, lol. I'd rather confront my fears instead of hiding my head in the sand hoping they go away...

By the way, I expect that for this Holiday period, the XBox360 and Wii will have roughly equal sales in America. I don't see the XBox 360 re-closing the gap, nor do I see the Wii pulling ahead further, until January.

Nintendo already started the SMG advertising push along with the start of the WiiFit HYPE train.
It will be interesting to see what the PS3 does this week # wise especially vs the Wii.

Apparently Nintendo UK is pushing Mario insanely hard - I think Plugabugz said he's seen quite a few ads for it. And here..

Quote

With Super Mario Galaxy just one week away from hitting Europe, Nintendo UK has confirmed just how extensive the advertising campaign for the flagship Wii title is going to be.

"It is certainly the biggest marketing campaign for a Mario title that I’ve ever been involved with. And having played it at some length now – it is an absolutely awesome title, it had me giggling like a child again – which is an amazing achievement for a video game."
- Rob Lowe, Senior Wii Product Manager.

The game has already been backed by a series of teaser adverts that started on 5th November, with the main TV campaign due to kick in on 19th of this month. In addition to this, Nintendo has secured high profile support in the National Press, whilst the game's in-store presence will also be extremely strong

Yeah, in Japan.  It looks like it actually did happen, but I guess we'll have to wait 'til tomorrow when Sales Bot posts the numbers.

If so, it took 5 skus, 3 price cuts, and a new color to stimulate some interest, but I give it only 2 weeks max before leveling off.

Also, I am not happy with sales of Super Mario Galaxy in Japan.

"Traditional" gaming is dying over there.  Can WiiFit save home consoles?

Super Mario Galaxy could also turn out to be a long-time seller, but I'm skeptical about that.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I expect Mario Galaxy to have some sturdy legs too.

Super Mario Galaxy might actually sell Sunshine numbers in Japan. *sigh* I guess that traditional gaming may really be dead over there. Lucky for Nintendo that the Wii and DS are capable of new types of gaming, but the market may have irrevocably shifted into a phase that resembles Western markets less and less.

Well, certain hardcore genres will always thrive there (RPGs, 2D platformers esp Mario, etc) but yeah, it really has been a radical shift.

Well considering how low software sales for PS3 games are as well, it seems that Home Console gaming is dying in Japan.  Like I said before, it'll all about the Handheld Consoles in Japan for some reason now.  Because on the DS, tranditional gaming is not only surviving but booming.

Look at the numbers for all the traditional Nintendo games on the DS in Japan since the DS first came out.

Super Mario 64 DS - 1.06 million
Wario Ware Touched - 1.16 million
Mario Kart DS - 2.54 million
Tetris DS - 1.23 million
Pokemon Diamond - 2.95 million
Pokemon Pearl - 2.45 million
Kirby: Sqeak Squad - 1.02 million

And finally the King of the DS

New Super Mario Bros - 4.90 million

This clearly show that the Japanese still care for what a lot of you consider, traditional gaming.  It's just they prefer it on handhelds then home console.  Meaning if Mario Galaxy was a DS game it would have sold over 1 million it's first week easily, but for some reason on the Wii, it's only been able to do less then 400,000 in two weeks.

Those really tell you something.  I'm Assuming those are the exact same game and the PS3 version sold almost 8.5 times more then the 360 version.  Which here in the states, not for this particular game but a similar in impact one, it would have been the opposite.  Also I'm surprised that Ratchet and Clank didn't post higher.

Well this is it people, it's finally happened.

NINTENDO IS THE WINNER OF THIS GEN

With Sony dead, the only competition was between Nintendo and Microsoft.  But now that we see that Halo 3 (the biggest game for the 360) didn't do much and that the Wii's sales have INCREASED at the same time there's nothing Microsoft do.

And now that Mario Galaxy has been released the final piece has been placed.  This battle station is now fully operational and ready to fire at the world.

For the sake of fairness, that price cut was only in the last week.  November NPD's will really help us gauge how (not so) well the PS3 performed for a full month at $399.

It's ridiculous what Wii numbers are gonna look like for November with Mario Galaxy launching... good lord.
