General Chat / Re: Game Over: One final rant...
« on: February 28, 2009, 03:26:03 PM »
Well I am close to the breaking point, where either Ian goes or I go. I am sick of his incessant complaining and repetitious negative comments.
No matter where you go on the Internet, there will always be negative people who complain about everything. By that same token, there will always be positive people who rejoice and celebrate everything. There are also people everywhere in between. You just have to try and focus on the topics and posts you want to see and try to ignore/forget about the stuff that bothers you. From my experience there are forums out there with far more negativity than this one, although your absence would result in the loss of a positive influence of this community.

If you are truly a positive person then you will not allow any pressing cynic to ruin your day. When your spirit is strong, no one can ever hope to crush it.

TalkBack / Re: THQ's Competition is Nintendo
« on: February 27, 2009, 11:08:55 PM »
Am I the only one (besides Ian) who reads this article and thinks "duh"? Of course the major competition on Nintendo's own platform is Nintendo, that's the way it's always been and probably the way it will always be. It's one reason why some game companies prefer the PlayStation, because the only competition is from other third-parties.

Maybe I'm missing the point of this article, but is this really something that needs pointing out? Are there actually any game companies out their who aren't aware that the main competition on a Nintendo platform is Nintendo? Or does a company want to pretend they were ignorant of that fact and use it as a lame excuse for previously producing low-quality products?

Why is part of the word significantly starred out?
That's why I have the Word Filter switched off, as it filters out strange things sometimes.
If you quote the post those of us with the filter switched off will be able to see what it looks like filtered.

When you've been hit with three blue shells, mowed down by a guy with a starman, and hit with a lightning bolt all within the last stretch of the final lap it get just a wee bit discouraging.
How often does that actually happen though? I can only recall one time getting hit by three blue shells in a row, and the only reason I remember it is because I have it on tape. It's very rare to be hit by somebody with a Starman after a blue shell, unless everyone is way too close for comfort, in which case everyone would be experiencing difficulty. Everyone gets smacked by Lightning and their items knocked out of them, so that shouldn't really affect you unless you were going over a jump.

I think one problem is that people tend to remember the times when items have hindered them rather than when they've helped them. For all the times you've been hit by a blue shell just before the finish line, for all the times a barrage of red shells stopped you in your tracks, for all of the times somebody with a Golden Mushroom zooms past you at the end, these same occurrences have helped you win just, if not more than, as much as they've caused you to lose.

I enjoy Double Dash!! as well. I got it after MKWii but it is still different enough from it and enough of an improvement from the previous Mario Kart games that it's worth having. The best part about it is the double characters, as then I can choose both my favourite characters, Toad and Birdo!

17630
So what is this then, some sort of "mature" Mario Party? Weird.

I'll participate in the tournaments if I remember when they happen. I think I have missed three total since the game launched, so that's not so bad considering I'm pretty forgetful.

Quote from: Stratos, from the Welcome thread
You can dodge the blue shells in the exact same way in Double Dash!!.
I never could get it to work. The timing must be a lot more exact.

Quote from: Stratos
You don't need to trail Items to deflect shells, you just have good timing.
That was my point, it is a lot harder to block oncoming shells in Double Dash!!. There also isn't a rearview camera, so you can't see where the shells are until right before they hit you giving you a very small window of opportunity.

Even with the extra four racers in MKWii, I still think the items are worse in Double Dash!!. After all, there's a character dedicated to items so they're going to play a pretty big role.
I should say, however, that I enjoy the unpredictability associated with random elements, so that's probably a big part of the reason why I don't find the items in MKWii to be a pain.

Windows 98 has horrible resource management.  XP (2nd edition) is great.
I don't even know what that means, which likely indicates it isn't something that would matter based on the limited number of things I use my PC for.

I didn't know this was a debate, I thought it was a discussion. :-\
I guess I'll continue this in the MKWii Mega Thread.

NWR Forums Discord / List of words changed by the Word Filter?
« on: February 27, 2009, 09:43:48 PM »
I had some trouble deciding where to put this topic. Although it it more of a "serious" question, I ultimately decided that the Funhouse was probably the best place for this because of what it could potentially turn into.

Is there a list out there of every word that is blocked by the Word Filter, as well as what it will become?

The reason I ask is that I have the Word Filter disabled, but I have noticed that more than just the usual "offensive" words are filtered out. For example, if you put an "M" and a "$" together, it will become "I am a terrible poaster". Since I won't know what my post will look like to those who use the Word Filter, I'd like to know what all of the blocked words are so I could avoid using them if I so choose.

In the chart you can replace 'Mario Kart' with any and all over powered MKWii items like the blue shells.
You can dodge the blue shell using a mushroom. Just grab one before you make your way to the front position. Of course, if you're a poorly-skilled gamer such as myself, you won't have to worry about the blue shell because you'll never make it to first. :-\ But that doesn't mean you can't have fun! :)

I think the items were more overpowered in Mario Kart Double Dash!!. Firstly, it's a lot harder to block shells since you can't drag items behind you anymore. Most of the character-specific items were pretty ridiculous as well, and there's no way to dodge the blue shell either.

I personally enjoy XP. I find it superior to 98 and still very game friendly
I just like '98 because it is the easiest to use. XP is alright though, especially now that the kinks have been worked out.

Also, look at your last post's response to mine, then look at your following response to pap64; I think your first statement answers your second. Accessories like the Rumble and Expansion were not required to play most games. That logic is what makes pap say what he does about WM+ being optional in other games.
Different systems, different accessories, different times. Lots of variables. I hope he's right but I'm not just going to assume it's true. Expect the worst and hope for the best.

For the record, I never stated Mario Strikers Charged wasn't a good game. It just doesn't follow the pick-up-and-play mentality of other Mario games, and is probably the most hardcore Mario game of them all, even more so than the platformers and RPGs. It is very un-Mario, so much so that I'd probably like it better if it didn't have Mario characters in it. It is quite detailed in its animation and presentation, but it isn't in a style which I like, and it sometimes feels a bit mean-spirited. I'm sorry but I just don't like to see Birdo doing crotch-chops. Even I think that's just wrong.

The same could be true for Punch Out!!. It might not be very Punch-Out!!-esque but it could still be good nonetheless.

I think the Camelot Mario titles did really well with this.
I agree on that. Camelot made the best Mario games, which is why I'm sad that they don't seem to be interested in creating any more. All I can do is hope their attitude will change someday.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Question about Wii messages
« on: February 27, 2009, 12:01:18 AM »
I checked and WiiConnect24 is set to "on", which I'm pretty sure it always has been.
Are there any specific options I should tinker with?

I don't really care about receiving messages, but if the system isn't operating as it should, that's what concerns me. I guess I'll add my email address to the Wii, then try changing some settings or something and send myself test messages.

Thank you for the response.

Sorry in advance about all of the quotes but I can't think of a better way to formulate this post.

The N64, Gamecube, Gameboys and DS all have peripherals or upgrades you can acquire for games. The N64 had the Expansion Pak, Rumble Pak and Transfer Pak. The Expansion Pak was required for some games or for critical features in them.
I wouldn't consider any of the various accessories or peripherals released over the years to be upgrades. The Rumble Pak and Transfer Pak were never a requirement for any game. While the Expansion Pak may have had two games which absolutely required it, most games which supported it used it optionally, and one of those two games was sold with the Pak. Many accessories had exclusive games but they don't count as upgrades unless they try to replace a part of the system, thereby being forced onto people. The exclusives were sort of like a bonus for those who had the accessory but the real meat of the system's games didn't require them. Even with the original PlayStation's upgraded analogue controller replacing the original as the standard, many games still supported the original controller.

System add-ons are hard to classify, as they're more like a new system than they are an upgrade. Whatever they are, their track-record should go to show that such a concept will be met with failure. With the ever-changing times though, suddenly it's acceptable.

If I know Nintendo they will make it so that Motion Plus compatible games can be played regularly with the Wiimote.
What is it which leads you to believe this? I know that Smash and Mario Kart have multiple options but the former doesn't use an accessory and the latter's accessory isn't something Nintendo was going to aggressively pursue. Wii Fit isn't playable without the Balance Board (I think...). The GameCube Wiileases don't allow support for GameCube controllers. Methinks Nintendo is really going to want to push people to use the WM+ and that's easier to do if it's the only choice.

I didn't know Wii Music used the Balance Board. I guess I'll take that off my list. :-\

Quote
Many Gameboy games could only be played on the GBC and those still sold fine.
The Game Boy Color was a new system, it wasn't an upgrade. It was more powerful than just a Game Boy with colour.

Quote
maybe you should wait till MP is released and how Nintendo handles it before declaring it a flop and/or ruining Wii gaming?
On the contrary, I declared that Wii Sports Resort was going to be a bigger hit than Wii Fit. Considering how well that has sold I'd say I have high expectations for its sales. It isn't going to ruin Wii gaming for me but it could potentially result in a few games which I won't bother with because they require the accessory.

Quote
I know I've spoken positively of the device, but I don't even know how Nintendo will use it after its release. So we both should just wait and see, knowing that Nintendo will have a plan.
Like I said, I hope to be able to try it out but I'm not buying it on blind faith. I learned that lesson with SSBBrawl.

In all honesty, I'll probably end up buying it at some point. I complain because I love. :-*

Are you still running Windows 98?!?
Yes. It is the best of Microsoft's operating systems. I don't know why anyone would want Vista as it seems to cause more problems than it solves.

Punch-Out isn't a boxing game. If they change it into one then the developers completely missed the point of the game.
With Next Level Games, you never know. They completely missed the point of a Mario game with Mario Strikers.

Nintendo Gaming / Question about Wii messages
« on: February 26, 2009, 09:14:54 PM »
I'm wondering if one of you fine folks here can help answer this question.

If a message is sent to the Wii, but the standby connection is turned off, does the message just disappear?

I've seen some people state that when they have the standby connection turned off, they'll still receive any messages sent to the Wii the next time they power it on. This isn't the case for me. When I first got the Wii, I didn't use the standby connection. My friend asked why I never responded to any of her messages, but I never received any. I also don't receive official messages from Nintendo if the standby connection isn't on (or if the system is unplugged), such as the Mario Kart tournament messages.

Is this how it is supposed to work? Does anyone here have experience in this?

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Unveils New Classic Controller, the Classic Pro
« on: February 26, 2009, 08:50:18 PM »
Is it just me or does the image look photoshopped? It looks like somebody just took a Classic Controller and morphed it with a white GC controller... although I suppose that's what Nintendo did as well.

17641
I don't even like wrestling but I still enjoyed THQ's N64 wrestling titles, especially for multiplayer.
I think they released these four in order:
WCW vs NWO World Tour
WCW vs NWO Revenge
WWF Wrestlemania 2000
WWF No Mercy

WWF 2000 is my favourite, but they're all solid.

Anyways, I'm glad THQ will still be working on Wii games. I haven't played de Blob yet but it looks really fun and vomit-inducingly adorable.

17642
Wait, I'm confused. You don't want to buy the game because it is better than previous Mario Kart games? Or is it because you don't want to further increase your profanity ratio?

17643
I still haven't picked up Excite Truck yet so now I'm wondering if I should just skip it and wait for the sequel. As Ian Sane pointed out though there are some pretty scary words in the description...

I'm glad to see that Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is being released in North America. It looks kind of interesting, I might check it out, especially if it is $30.

Sometimes I want companies to just stop releasing games for a couple of years so that I can get caught up on everything I've missed so far. And then I think to myself "Dear mop, I've become quite the megalomaniac if I expect them to do something like that for little old me. Not that I'm not awesome enough for that, but still... it'd be unfair to everyone else."

That comment was facetious, because if you take it at face value then it becomes true.
I suppose I should begin utilizing smilies when I make comments like that. :)

17645
the Wii has quite a few stellar games so it is hard to choose (and yes I'd include MK Wii somewhere on that list).
Wait a tick, if you believe Mario Kart Wii to be a stellar title then why am I weird to think it is the best Wii game? Surely it would be strange only if my favourite Wii game were something like Babysitting Party?

Maybe I'll change my tune after borrowing the game from a friend and playing a few rounds online with you guys on the next NWR Wi-Fi Night.

Ditto... except for the borrowing from a friend part. I'll have to rent it and see. The next time there's a Wi-Fi Night with MK Wii around here, I'll try to get in on it.
I don't know if that's such a great idea. Mario Kart Wii takes a little getting used to, especially if you've played any previous MK game extensively. If you jump right into the online racing, it might leave you with a bad taste in your mouth if you happen to run into any steep competition. If you do go this route, then try to get in as much practice as you can before the night, and unlock some goodies too. To unlock Birdo play Time Trials on 16 courses. Just do it.

you have never owned a computer, MP3 player, cellphone or any piece of hardware.
Of those three things, I own just one: a computer (obviously). It will become ten years old in August of this year, and not once have I purchased any single piece of additional hardware for it. Ever. I got it right the first time. Besides, upgrades weren't a trend with previous Nintendo consoles and they turned out just fine, so why should I embrace them now?

Quote
What I am getting at is that technology is prone to upgrades, some more substantial than others. MP aims to upgrade the Wiimote so it has better performance and control is further enhanced.
Not all upgrades are forced though. For example, older iPods can still play all of the same music as the newer models. By the looks of things, Wii Motion Plus games can't be played with a regular Wiimote.

Quote
I've yet to fully see anyone toolbox through Wii Sports. People seem to play better acting out the motions that just flicking the controller.
It depends on the game. Everyone I know uses quick flicks for Tennis and Baseball, because the real motions simply don't work. On the other hand, Golf, Boxing, and especially Bowling not only function, but they work well. So well, in fact, that I don't understand why no other games have even attempted to match the control of Wii Sports. Such wasted potential, especially considering it was a launch title. It is kind of pathetic that the Wii needs an upgrade in order to realize its original potential.

Everything I've heard about Wii Motion Plus is that you have to try it to understand that it is FREAKEN GREAT.
The Wii itself is sort of the same way, especially when it first launched. Considering how well Wii Sports "demonstrates" the Wiimote, I'd expect no less than Wii Sports Resort to utilize the WM+ in many creative ways. I can only hope, however, that it doesn't end up remaining the best application for the WM+ similar to how Wii Sports still has the best motion control.

I'd try out the Wii Motion Plus if I get the chance, but I'm not sure if anyone I know will be buying it. I can only hope no game I actually want to play requires the accessory... which basically means no Mario games.

Is the solution of "buying everyone out" really worth it in this instance though? You all saw the ten-year profit report that was posted a few pages back, Microsoft's gaming division is in the hole by almost $7 billion. They are supposed to be business genii, right? Don't they realize you can't make money by buying things?

Nintendo would never allow their company to fall in the hands of a North American company. They're too proud for that.

That point was more to explain why people who prefer the first feel that way, it wasn't meant to imply that everyone prefers the first. There's still individual gaming tastes to factor into the equation.

I believe the artifact hunt exists because the game was a little rushed at the end of development. Sadly it was a reoccurring trend in many GameCube games. :-\

17650
It's no coincidence that Birdo appears in my favourite Wii game, you know.
If Brawl had Birdo (and Toad) in it I might feel differently about it. ;)

Mario Kart Wii transcends awesome. Anyone who doesn't believe it should have their Wii confiscated from them, and should be locked up in a room with various televisions displaying videos showcasing Mario Kart Wii's awesomity. [/crazed fanboi]

What would you say the best game on Wii is? Anubis II?  :P
