Title: The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD Took 6 Months to Develop

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD for the Wii U only had a half-year development cycle, according to Eiji Aonuma.

Speaking to Siliconera, Aonuma talked about the game's short, but still difficult, development time. "You had to consider the difference in hardware at the time." says Aonuma. "There is a technique known as toon shading, which gives the game a very animated look. At that time, the technique was established, but had not been used before by our staff, so everyone had to do everything by hand."

Aonuma also went on to mention having to manually edit some of the game's cutscenes, in order to comply with widescreen TVs.  "For dramatic purposes, we would have characters we didn't want in the frame, but in 16:9 ratio, you could still see those characters."

OK. Whatever. To me, that's still 6 months that could have gone into a much more interesting original Wii U game, rather than an overpriced port of an overrated GameCube game. Hopefully Nintendo doesn't become fond of these quick & dirty ports, because I'd like to see more games I didn't already play 10 years ago.

I'd be surprised if Nintendo dedicated a significant amount of staff to Wind Waker HD. The bulk of the team has probably been hard at work on Zelda Wii U with the Wind Waker HD staff recently joining them and the Link Between Worlds either joining them as well or beginning work on a new 3DS Zelda.

Wind Waker HD is significantly better than the original due almost entirely to the Swift Sail. I can't believe they didn't think to include that in the first place. I probably wouldn't have been able to replay the game otherwise. It makes that much of a difference.

I think this is a great idea, so long as Nintendo is putting newer/younger staffers on these projects.  Gives them a chance to work on a AAA title and learn some stuff and gives a new generation a chance to play a game they might not have before (not to mention, with the GameCube being the worst selling console for Nintendo ever, this gives many folks who didn't play it back then a chance to play it).

If the new Smash Bros. is going to be a long ways off, they should do an up convert of Melee and just add online.  I bet they'd sell a bazillion Wii Us off of that alone.

Nintendo just released the 28-year-old NES game "Golf" on VC, and it costs $5. Don't look for them to be offering reasonable prices on their software anytime soon.

Regarding pricing:


I just sold copy of WindWaker for $45 a couple of months ago. Kind of wanted to keep it, as I missed the game originally and haven't had time to play it yet after grabbing a copy a couple of years ago, but decided that paying about $10 to upgrade to an HD version that plays on modern hardware isn't such a bad deal. Obviously opinions will vary.


It seems silly to assume that everyone has already played a game that was released over a decade ago - especially given Nintendo's unique focus on console gaming with youth and families in mind.

I've never had the opportunity to play-through this game, so I don't have an issue with them re-releasing it.  I just can't cope with the $50 price tag.  I think I'd feel a little more willing to pony-up for at least $10 cheaper.

Are you referring to Nintendo not including the swift sale in the original release on the GameCube? 

As Anouma explained (http://kotaku.com/heres-why-sailing-took-so-damn-long-in-legend-of-zelda-513171965), this was due to the limited hardware capabilities of the Game Cube.  The Wii U is much more powerful and has no problem loading the entire ocean at once.
