RFN E3 2012 The Half at Home Reacts
« on: June 05, 2012, 11:13:46 PM »

Jon and James didn't get to go to E3, so they brought out an old friend to commiserate with.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/30540

It's just hours after Nintendo's big Wii U reveal and the two most beloved members of RFN aren't there to add their own "flavoUr" to the events.

Just because you're not there doesn't mean you can't talk about it. The Queen's spelling of flavour is a double pun for this Wii U discussion as Jon, James, and very special guest Greg Leahy get together to discuss Nintendo's announcements, the lack of "bomb dropping," and whether or not this is - in fact -the podcast, people.

I posted this on another gaming site from talking with friends about nitnendo's (in my opinion) awful e3 presentation...but I think its relevant here too.

____
I agree that, say,  Zelda needs a break. The excellent Skyward Sword just came out, as well as plenty of re-releases (Ocarina of Time 3D, Minish Cap on 3DS, Four Swords, etc), all within the last year alone. But the other franchises? ie: Metroid, Star Fox, Animal Crossing, Smash Brothers, Kirby, Donkey Kong, F-Zero, Pokemon, etc.? Most have run entirely cold with only a few exceptions. Where are they? What is Nintendo doing with them? Don't they know THOSE are the things that the fans and core gamers want to see? Here, let's take a closer look at what Nintendo is doing:

Software Planning and Development Team 1: Finished some sort of japanese rhythm game awhile ago. Are they responsible for the new wario thing nintendo didnt bother mentioning?

SPD2: Finish co-developing Xenoblade. What are they up to? Maybe too early to tell.

SPD3: Pilotwings 3DS. Now???? (Its not as if that game was a high profile game to begin with. Worked on Metroid Prime games in the past)

SPD4: Last finished Wii Party in 2010. Have been quiet ever since.

SPD5: Hasn't made a game since 2009? No clue what they are doing, or if they even still exist.

Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development 1: Finished Mario Kart 7 half a year ago. Probably working on something - possibly DS related?

EAD2: Has been working on Animal Crossing 3DS for years  EAD 3 - Finished Skyward Sword 8 months ago. Too early to tell, but likely something important.

EAD 4: Pikmin 3

EAD 5: Star Fox 64 3DS was their last thing. Wii Fit U might be their doing.

NST: Nothing for years. Who knows?

Project Sora: Obviously just finished Kid Icarus, presumably just starting Smash Brothers.

Retro Studios: Did half of Mario Kart 7, nothing else since Donkey Kong Returns. Obviously has been working on SOMETHING for years.

Alpha Dream: Nothing since Bowser's Inside Story

Intelligent Systems: Fire Emblem and Paper Mario 3DS

HAL: Nothing in a long time besides Kirby's Return to Dreamland, which had been on and off in development since the Gamecube days, and Epic Yarn in 2010

Camelot: Mario Tennis 3DS

If you bother to read that, you should be able to devise that the majority of Nintendo in house teams havent released too much in a LONG TIME. This is ESPECIALLY true since the Wii has seen upwards of ZERO games in its release schedule, and precious few games released in the entire calendar year of 2011. One can assume we'll see some of these games show up tomorrow for the 3DS event, but Nintendo is releasing a brand new console at the end of this year. Are you going to tell me after that horrendous E3 showing that ALL of these teams just didnt have ANYTHING to show in time? Give me a break.

Nice, a reaction podcast from 3 of my favorite people on the site!  I've been waiting for James to tear into Nintendo for that abomination of a press conference.  And I love that he apparently found my "Mario has joined the 1%" joke in the NWR Chat so hilarious.   ;D

My main disappointment was that there wasn’t much time allocated to Pikmin 3 and NSMBU. They should have demonstrated NintendoLand first, and saved Pikmin until last, with a thorough showing.  They devoted extra time to Just Dance (which was shown yesterday); but didn’t show Assassins Creed on the GamePad (that alone would have capsized the other conference briefings of the game). Why?

I feel like Nintendo is really trying to get 3rd-party on board. Yeah, what they showed was probably all they had today. First party is set for this year but I would expect lots of current ports this year before real next-gen games are shown next year (Darksiders II will be in Febuary 2013). I hate to wait that long too, but Super Mario Galaxy wasn’t released until a year after the Wii launched. There is no doubt in my mind that more 3rd-party game announcements will be made before this holiday. I would like to think they didn’t dedicate 5+ minutes to Arkham City, but rather to games in the pipeline, that haven’t been announced yet. In the post-Nintendo conference interview with Yves Guillemot, he only confirmed Watch Dogs for other consoles; and when asked about Wii U, his smile and expression clearly stated the game is most likely, heavily based on Wii U compatibility.

YAY! My first (and quite possibly only) treat of E3! Thank you boys, appreciate you taking the time to pontificate in my ears.

Seriously though, you've got to be one massive Pikmin fan to get a Wii U at launch if E3 is anything to go by. Especially with what looks like a pretty decent holiday line up on 3DS - only so many hours in the day and ÂŁs in the pay packet after all. Shame really, I was really looking forward to it for the remote play style options on the tablet.

I guess we'll see what news the next few months bring.

BY FAR, the best surprise of E3, guys! ;) Funny enough, after the press conference yesterday I was thinking, "You know, I wonder what Greg thought of this..." and would you look-a there! Can't wait to listen.

My thoughts exactly. Did they REALLY think that the people there (adult male games journalists) would be interested in things like Just Dance or (especially) Sing??? Also, did they not think that nearly everyone had already played Arkham City eight months ago?!? Ugh....there were some great things shown, but they could have done a LOT better. Oh, and also, that ending with the "fireworks" was the dumbest things I've seen at an E3 conference since Microsoft spent half an hour detailing Internet Explorer.

Also, I agree about the previews for Far Cry and The Last of Us being extremely disturbing. I was kind of appalled to see the brutality of those franchises, and the cheers only made me wonder what has happened to old-fashioned, innocent gameplay.
