General Gaming / Madden 11 - GameFlow Babeee!!!
« on: August 14, 2010, 10:39:34 PM »
So, I usually rag on EA, about the small updates, but I tried the demo on the PS3 and I really LOVE the new Gameflow.  Basically, its a way to keep the game moving.  Sort of like watching a live game.  Instead of leaving the action to cycle through plays, the offensive and defensive coordinators choose it.  And then they bark the orders to you Call of Duty style.  IMO its executed very well.  The plays usually pertain to the situation and it makes me feel like a kid again, hitting the field and following the coaches orders.  I'd highly recommend trying the demo, especially since they let you play the whole game (Indy vs Jets).  On top of that, on 4th down, a menu pops up and you can select "Go For It" and it chooses a play to get you in the endzone.  Helps keep the drama going.  When it works, it feels fantastic.  I haven't had much time for games this summer due to music, but I think I'm going to pick this one up and play it through the fall.

The graphics also looks a hell of a lot better, but that could just be memory loss.

Thoughts?

General Gaming / Joe Danger - PS3
« on: June 10, 2010, 02:05:55 AM »
Man.  I gotta say.  Playing this game, is the most pure FUN I've had in a long time!  The controls are perfect, the graphics are gorgeous, and there's even multiplayer.  Basically, its an ode to Excitebike with a twist, that being a sprinkle of Evil Canevil on top, as well as some platforming, yes, platforming.  This thing really feels like a Nintendo product and it was made by just 4 guys, and it was their first game nonetheless.  Is anyone else having as much fun with it as I am?

The only negative is its $15, but IMO, its WELL worth it!

Here's a link to the IGN video review on it:

General Chat / Casual vs Hardcore in Life
« on: April 27, 2010, 08:43:46 PM »
So I was swimming the other day, and I thought to myself, "Self, swimming is great, but I'm no pro, I'm just a casual swimmer.  And I'm ok with that".

That got me thinkin, what other activities am I casual at and what activities am I hardcore at?  Here's a few off the top of the ole dome:

Casual:
Mountain Biking
Roller Blading
Free-styling
Running
Following the NBA
Playing the drums
Eating Watermelon
Reading
Working
Playing the drums
Visiting the Midwest
Talking to random strangers
Raving
Listening to Prince

Hardcore:
Video Games! (obviously)
Surfing the World Wide Web
Listening to podcasta
Thinking about women when I'm all by myself
Entertainging my cats
Writing songs
Taking lots of medicine
Listening to albums all the way through
Eating Chips
Drinking Mountain Dew

So what say you NWR forumers???

General Gaming / I Know the Game is Garbage but I'm Buying It Anway
« on: January 15, 2010, 10:29:17 PM »
So over the last few weeks, I've had the compulsion to buy Nitrobike for the Wii.  Yes, I know it reviewed poorly, yes I know the controls are terrible, yes I know Halbred told us to avoid it and yes, I know its generic as all hell.  However, I'm just drawn to it.  Why is it?  Do I think it'll be the last game I need for my collection?  Is it because the develper made my beloved Excitebike 64, or am I just borded?

So what say you forum dwellers?  Are there ever games you feel some strange compulsion to buy?  They can be games that scored poor, or even games in a genre you completely ignore (For instance, though I hate RPG's, I just had to buy Wind Waker).  Another game I just had to buy that I normally never would was Call of Juarez.  Well worth it.

Just curious to see if this phenomenom happens to anyone ese, and if so, how were the results.  Glad you picked the game up"

General Gaming / Oh You Naughty Bear You (360/PS3)
« on: January 13, 2010, 08:39:01 PM »
Wow.  Can't believe there isn't  a thread for this game yet!  It truly is a breath of fresh air.  Its developed by the same folks as Wet, so I'm got a lot of confidence the style of the game will be off the charts.  Controls.....eh, we'll see.  That was Wet's achilles' heel.  Anyway, check out the trailer, what do you think?  Hopefully this will fill the void the now MIA High Voltage Zoo Machine Gun game was supposed to fill.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3SH1Ycxo8Q
Here's some pretty sweet images from the gameplay:
http://www.joystiq.com/photos/naughty-bear-360-ps3/2613655/

Per Joystiq, here's a brief description of how the game works:
"505 Games just announced a new game from Wet developer Artificial Mind and Movement -- and the protagonist is, well, artificial. Naughty Bear is pretty much exactly what we expected when we saw the trademarkfiled by A2M: a violent action game starring an animated, stuffed bear.Specifically, a stuffed bear who swears revenge on other jerk bears for failing to invite him to a party.

The goal in Naughty Bear is to scare, irritate, and, ofcourse, hurt the other bears, racking up "Naughty Points" as you do andusing weapons strewn about the game's 30 stages. The game will dole outmore Naughty Points in response to more "deviant and maniacal" tactics. From the description, it sounds like Manhunt with teddy bears. It's going to be a polyester stuffing-bath."

If they somehow bring the Berenstain Bears into this as the final fight, its game of the year.  Easily.

Nintendo Gaming / Well, its finally officially, Sunshine was a disaster....
« on: November 03, 2009, 09:01:52 PM »
After watching this totally rad history lesson on Nintendo's own and most recent "Nintendo Week" I noticed the lack of a shout out to Mario Sunshine.  Huh?  Has Nintendo blotted it out of the annals of Mario?  Looks like it.....

Oh well.  At least we finally have some closure on the debate.  Maybe they'll address Double Dash next week.

General Gaming / Any Cheap Fabulous PSP Games Out There?
« on: October 25, 2009, 01:40:52 AM »
Comrads, I just traded in 8 Wii and PS3 games I haven't played in forever straight up for a used PSP 3000 at Gamestop (they have a promo, trade 4 get 20 bones in extra credit, and don't worry, I disinfected it three times as I know what kind of content you can cram onto those bad boys).  I figured why not turn what I know I won't play anytime soon into a neat new toy to play with?   And obviously,  I went w/ the 3000 b/c there are TONS of cheap UMD's to jump on.

So I have a couple questions, what are some older now cheap UMD's worth picking up? I love racing, platforming, space shooters and games made while the dev's were tripping. Obviously, I can look on Metacritic to find the most popular ones but are there any that slipped through the cracks that are now cheap that ya'll would recommend similar to Wii gems like Excite Truck, Geometry Wars, Zack n Wikki and Boom Blox?  Yesterday I picked up Twisted Metal, Jaxter, and Rachet Size Matters at very low prices.  And today I downloaded Burnout Legends b/c I want it on the "Go" at all times =)

I've got a 20 dollar gift card for Best Buy and tomorrow there is buy 2 get 1 free on ALL games so I'm looking to stock up in case Denver is hit with a blizzard soon and my wife hogs the TV.

And oh, with Patapon, I liked the demo, should I just grab the 2nd one at this point and skip the first?

Had he lead the E3's of the past, I would have dropped the 600 day one.

Reader Reviews / Rate The Last Game You Played
« on: September 12, 2009, 09:43:58 PM »
In drive by fashion, this thread is a place to toss up a quick review for the last game you played.  Whether you played it 5 mins, or 5 months, toss it out there and let the developer know how you felt.  Hell, you can even throw demos in here, just make sure to specify.  I'll start:

PS3 - Los Angeles Club Midnight - 3/5
Though the graphics and controls were nice, the overall experience just felt booooring.  Nothing new for me.  But a solid game for fans of thug racing.  I only rented it b/c Batman was all gone.

General Gaming / Dirt 2 (PS3/360/DS/Wii)
« on: September 10, 2009, 10:02:43 PM »
Though I don't watch Nascar, or monster truck rallys, I'm addicted to racing games, particuarily off road racers.  My all time favorite is still ExciteBike 64, but this generation its got to be Motorstorm Pacific Rift with Excite Truck hitting a close 2nd.

Anyone pick up Dirt 2 yet?  Some of the reviews are calling it the best off road racer out there, while others says its pretty radical, but too much on the arcadey side.  Hillary Goldstein docked it a decent amount of points b/c they didn't include enough "point to point rallies" but that seems a bit silly.  If they didn't want to put them in the game, they didn't want to put them in.  The game should be judged on what the developer sets out to do, not what you wish was in the game.  Thats like docking Street Fighter for not including a SubSpace Emissary mode.  But hey, its Hillary, what can you expect?  Personally, I like the decision, Dirt 1 had too many of them and I became quite lonely racing alone.

So back to the game, any thoughts?  I thought the PS3 demo was very impressive, particularily the in cockpit view in seeing the wipers remove rain and mudd.  Since I enjoyed Dirt 1 and Grid so much, I'm picking it up regardless for my birthday in a week, so I'll be able to add to the convo then.

WahOOO!  Wii version has 4 player split!!

Nintendo Gaming / Best Trailer Ever

General Gaming / Smash Cars PS3
« on: August 29, 2009, 01:48:51 PM »
Due to the seemingly overpriced price and lace of demo, I have yet to try this.  Anyone take the plunge?  Is it the Excite Truck/Mario Kart/Motorstorm hybrid we've all been waiting for, or just another simple yet great concept not fully realized?

My guess is its a little bit of both.  Like two of their other recent titles (Magic Ball and Cuboid), it appears to have a decent core concept with some obvious flaws that hold it back from being great.

General Gaming / Wet 360/PS3
« on: August 23, 2009, 01:17:05 AM »
Me like.  Played the demo today through the Euro PSN store.  Its a bit shallow with some rough edges, but the slow motion gun maneuvering reminds me of a cross between Kill Bill and Viewtiful Joe.  Plus, any game based off Eliza Dushku is an obvious must play (sorry Sarah).  Should be a decent rental/guilty pleasure.

Anyone else get their hands on this character yet?

General Gaming / Ghostbusters (PS3 & 360)
« on: July 02, 2009, 06:44:28 PM »
Anyone try this yet?  I rented it yesterday and I'm really enjoying it.  Best movie/game I've played in a long time.  Anyone else knock the difficulty down to casual?  The game mechanics are a bit choppy in terms of dodging projectiles and in order to avoid getting pissed off, I knocked it down so I could just enjoy the ride.

NWR Forums Discord / New Smash Bros Melee Video Review
« on: June 23, 2009, 08:06:36 PM »
Still undecided about Smash Bros Melee for the Cube?  Well, maybe this recent video review will help you out.  Its nice to know the reviewer didn't rush in posting his final opinion like those stupid mainstream outlets.  Sometimes it takes eight years to really sink into a game.

Be sure to hit the link to find out if the game is/was any good.

General Chat / Ever Been Fired?
« on: June 16, 2009, 03:34:02 PM »
Obviously, just got let go.  First full time job, almost five years in.  The short story is my company was illegally forcing its employees to work over time at no cost, got sued, lost, was forced to change its policy, and removed some associates to save $$$

Considering I have approx 10 weeks paid to find a new gig, I'm going to consider it a gift rather than fight it.  I've been meaning to quit for a while now and this is just what I needed to get started.

However, getting let go never looks great to the next employer so I'm curious who else has been through this and found something better when it was all said and done.  Overall, I'm surprised how relieved a feel considering how bad I wanted to avoid the stigma of getting "fired".

NWR Forums Discord / Conflict Free Diamond Inventory - Lets share
« on: June 10, 2009, 05:39:36 PM »
So last night after I did Brett Farvra memorabilia inventory I decided to do an inventory of all the Conflict Free Diamonds I own.  After that, I got a bit bored, so I decided to glue them all together to create something that's never been done before.

The collaboration is rather modest, but I think it holds up nicely:

Lets see what you can do with your Conflict Free Diamonds!

General Chat / Iphone 3GS
« on: June 09, 2009, 07:48:05 PM »
So the new Iphone is now out.  Anyone upgrading to it or taking the initial plunge now?  I currently have the 16gig Edge model which still works great, but I'm tempted to move up, mainly for the speed.  It seems like the only features left I'd really want are buttons, as in some sort of psp slim type iteration for those that really want to play games on it.  But that will probably never happen, so may as well upgrade now and sell my current model to cover the cost.

Here's a feature guide for anyone interested.

Nintendo Gaming / Pikmin 3
« on: June 02, 2009, 08:18:45 PM »
Its coming folks, its coming:

IGN: You didn't show Pikmin 3, which is what we were expecting you to show. That kind of surprised us. Why not?

Reggie: Matt, we're all about surprises. We will show that game when it's ready. At the right time. Close to when it's going to be launched. It's not there yet. But Mr. Miyamoto still has his roundtable to do, so maybe you'll see. Maybe you might get that surprise after all.

Prediction, Miyamoto will be surrounded by Pikmin at the roundtable.  They will slap those who ask stupid questions.

General Chat / Official 2009 NFL Football Season Discussion Thread
« on: April 14, 2009, 08:06:10 PM »
Well, its that time of year again!  The 2009 schedule has just been released, so get your popcorn ready and take a look!

As a Bears fan, I couldn't be more excited.  Our first game is against Green Pay, on Sunday Night, the premier of Jay Cutler as a Bear!  We've gone through 20 or so QB's since Farve began with the pack, and our chances seem good that we've got a long term solution.

As far as expectations, anything less than the playoffs is a complete failure.  Last year, we were one game away, or should I say one play away (err...stupid squib kick to Atlanta...grrr) from making it in.  This year, our schedule is one of the easiest in the league.  We face only 7 teams who had a winning schedule last year and 5 of those games are at home.  As far as our division, each team still has its own mess to worry about.   This is a huge opportunity for the Windy City after a couple years of mediocrity.

Nintendo Gaming / Pseudo IGN Game - Lit
« on: October 29, 2008, 11:36:43 AM »
Anyone here still get NP?  If so, check out the latest issue.  It appears that "dark game" Matt and Bozon came up some time ago and frequently reference during Voice Chat is now actually in development with Bozon's bro's studio, Way Forward (Same studio that did Contra 4 for DS).

Here's a decription of the game:

In LIT, a teenager named Jake must make his way through his high school, overrun by shadowy creatures, to save his girlfriend Rachael who keeps in touch with him by mobile phone. The game will feature 30 levels and 5 "puzzle orientated" bosses.[3]

Played from either a top down or a third-person perspective, the game sees players controlling Jake with the Nunchuk as they wield a flashlight with the Wii Remote. Using the flashlight in addition to other sources of illumination such as lamps, flares and broken windows, Jake must carve paths of light through the darkness to safely escape.[3] Along with being used in combat against the monsters that roam the hallways, this manipulation of light will also play a big part in solving certain puzzles along the way.[4]

Sounds interesting at least....
