Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 531: Getting Down to Brass Max

I don't have a phone and my iDevice is older than Guillaume's. Then again, I don't have a Switch (yet?). Then again, that's at least partly because of the online+phone problem.

J. Jones' pronunciation of mobage hurt me inside.

Can't say I understand the hype around the new Pokémon games. I played the demo, and found it very disappointing. Setting the camera so close to the models seems like a mistake, since they look like crap, and the demo still suffered from some noticeable frame rate drops despite taking out stereoscopic 3D. No one seems to be talking about that, but I really wish they'd stuck with 2D environments. It's not like they had to move to 3D graphics to remove the grid. I wonder if they didn't develop it with the Switch in mind rather than the 3DS. since the "third version" of this set is rumored to be coming to Switch. Either way, considering it is coming out so late in the 3DS' life cycle, it's one of the worst-looking games I've seen on the system.

The demo was a bit too hand-holdy to me, but I guess it should be expected from a demo. The problem is that the whole thing feels too gimmicky, from the special moves to the riding Pokemon thing and the silly (and frame rate-killing) photographing minigame, which seems to be a growing issue with Pokemon games.

I can believe it's better than X/Y and the Ruby/Sapphire remakes, but playing the demo made me want to replay RGBY more than spend 50 Trudollars on the new ones.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 495: Introducing CladPrincess7

I don't really agree with James' assessment of Youkai Watch 2. You are probably quite early in the game right now, but even from the start I found that the coat of polish spread over everything made the experience fresh despite being in the same environment. The music got new arrangements, a bunch of new stuff is added around the map, the youkai detection and battle just feel better. Probably the biggest change is the dialogue and characters being more expressive and interesting. I think the graphics got some adjustments, but it's been so long I played the first one that I don't remember all that well. The game most likely targets people who became fans of the series via the anime as much as people who played the first game. And with the slice of life aesthetic, it would be kind of weird for Sakura New Town to look completely different from 1 to 2.

You do get all the same maps from YW1 back (which is why YW2 has the reputation of being YW1 except better/fixing YW1's issues), but once you progress a bit further and come across the new content (which I don't want to spoil), you might change your mind about it. I agree that not having the bike or warp points is annoying after YW1, and if you played YW1 recently it might be too repetitive to go through it right now (I'm kinda burnt out now after starting YW3 soon after playing 2/Busters), but I think the improvements and new content are more significant than it might seem at first.

If you do keep playing it, I look forward to hearing what you think about the new content and the story.

TalkBack / Re: Yo-Kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits (3DS) Review
« on: October 09, 2016, 05:44:00 PM »
I wrote some thoughts below, but ended up rambling more than I wanted. I played YW1 to 100% completion minus Tsuchinoko-panda, YW2 well into post-game (defeated Ayatsuri-sama), a bit of Busters and YW3, all in Japanese, so my perspective is probably very different from most people's.

I don't think the first game is as bad as you make it seem. I also dropped it after an hour or two when I first tried it a few years ago because I didn't know what I was doing and stumbled into a backstreet at the very start of the game, which didn't work out well. When I picked it back up, I found it pretty addictive, and I like how simple it keeps things compared to YW2's overwhelming amount of content.

YW2 at its base is definitely a better game. It acts partly as a remake of the first one and polishes most of the mechanics and the environment. I think all the bosses (usually optional) and areas from the first game show up in YW2. In a way YW2 feels more like an adventure, with a lot of mini-games, weird random events, youkai that show up in all kinds of places, and special areas like the endless tunnel. It's packed with so much content that I got sick of it after 120 hours with probably half of the youkai recruited, while in the first game, I was able to get them all, except for Tsuchinoko-panda, after about 100 hours (excluding resets to facilitate finding rare spawns).

In my opinion, the amount of content in the second game is both a good and a bad thing. It's easy to deviate from the main story and spend many hours running back and forth doing side-quests that beg for your attention. It's also easy to get lost in an optional area and find that you need a certain youkai to get past an obstacle. Some youkai that you need to activate events or open up areas have to be found or befriended in somewhat obscure ways. Such youkai existed in YW1, but they were usually just rare spawns and totally optional. There are also many youkai that have to be unlocked through QR codes or passwords obtained during special events, and luckily, you can find most of these online, but I heard some were time-restricted (Wondernyan, I think?), and then you have version exclusives, as well as digital purchase exclusives, which kind of sour my experience as a completionist who doesn't want to buy the same game three times.

There are a few balance issues in YW2. For example, in YW1 I had no problem going straight to the post-game area after beating the game, while in YW2, it's hard to find an appropriate location to level up in order to survive it. I ended up repeating a boss fight over and over, which is only possible if you have befriended a certain youkai that is not easy to get. Even that took a bit of time. The main quest line also provided no real challenge, until maybe the two last boss fights. The same issue was there in YW1 if the player did a lot of sidequests before going back to the main quest, but it's definitely worse in 2, and it makes the spike in difficulty between the end of the story and the post-game even worse.

I thought the voice acting (in Japanese) was fine in YW1 and YW2, the biggest difference on that end, as well as with the dialogue in general, being that the characters' personalities changed completely between the two games. I think the first one was produced before the anime's overwhelming success, and YW2 is a kind of Pikachu Edition for the series that takes a lot of the characterization and developments seen in the anime and incorporates them into the game. The second game is generally funnier and more colorful than the first, but the characters and plot were a bit too childish for me to enjoy (obviously understandable as it targets children). YW1, in all of its simplicity, had a more straightforward and silly story, while in YW2, it seems to switch constantly between self-awareness and a more serious, but cliché tone with maybe too much power of friendship. I do love most of the content added to the second game, and the whole traditional aesthetic, however, and to me the hook of the game is not the main story, but the aspect of exploration, solving side-quests and finding cool stuff all over the place, which YW2 accomplishes excellently, and better than YW1. The fetch quests aren't very fun to play out, they seem to be mostly an excuse to develop the small stories and characters involved in each side quest.

I think YW1 is still worth playing before YW2, firstly because it's a natural progression in terms of amount of content and level of polish, and it's harder to go back to YW after playing YW2 for that reason, secondly because the second game, despite retconning a lot of the first one, contains a lot of references to it, thirdly because it's much shorter and easily digestible than YW2, and most importantly because you need the first game in order to get Koma-san in the sequel, and Koma-san is the cutest youkai.

P.S.: that "advanced targeting move" you mention isn't really a targeting move. You just poke an enemy youkai and find a spot that will either damage them slightly, make them easier to befriend, give you more experience (not sure about that one) or refill your energy gauge. It doesn't influence who your youkai friends are actually targeting, and it only works on youkai who are slacking off or are being possessed.

Yes, I am well aware of the fact that Japan and Europe have had to purchase the cord separately for some time now, but those of us in North America have been conditioned to expect our device to come bundled with a charger.
What a stupid statement.

Is Ace Attorney 123 the same as JP release minus Japanese script? Did they add other languages or something? Not sure why it took so long to come otherwise.

The WiiWare versions are garbage. I don't know who would want to play a GBA game on a home console anyway, the borders are obnoxious as well, and of course the 3DS compilation has noticeably higher resolution and 3D.

I have to wonder why it took so long to bring this over considering the Japanese version includes the English localization and even allows you to keep one save file for every game in both English and Japanese. Guess it took them time to remove that feature from the Western release.

I know rankings/tier lists are either clickbait or just wastes of everyone's time when they are not written by serious players who know what they are talking about, but you could at least spell all the characters' names right...

Also quite misleading to call it a ranking (because of what the word implies in this context) when it's just listing the characters in order of your enjoyment.

TalkBack / Re: New 3DS, It Can't Be Worse Than the Old 3DS
« on: September 02, 2014, 12:33:17 AM »
I have a launch 3DS too and haven't had any issues with the buttons, I used a soft case to carry it around though.

Also have had 3DS XL and carried it in a pouch without issues so far.

I don't really get why people are whining, I don't remember DSi being so hated, I guess it's because it actually has a good game coming for it? Whatever, I'll get one when it feels worth it just like any other platform. I waited for the Zelda XL and don't regret it. I have no issues whatsoever with buying a new 3DS considering the massive improvements to functionality and power, if software warrants it of course. And the regular 3DS is powerful enough to handle many types of games, including... all the ones announced for 2014 and 2015, so it's not like there'll be a shortage of games on that system.

"The red disc likely has music from the 3DS version, while the blue presumably has songs from the Wii U game." Probably better if you only use one "likely"/"presumably" on that line for the sake of clarity.

Glad to see the Kid Icarus difficulty scale brought over for classic mode. It's probably the best implementation of a difficulty setting that I've ever seen, and should help the replayability (which I found was a problem for solo play).

Most respected video game bloggers know better than to make claims like this, but yes, part of the people who turned this into a big deal to begin with are acting like Nintendo is homophobic/discriminatory. I brought up how Japanese people portray themselves as Caucasian in media, and apparently that means they're discriminating against themselves too and have a wrong culture.

That's what I gathered from Reddit's r/games subreddit.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 382: The Gerenicity
« on: May 12, 2014, 06:21:01 PM »
Homosexuals are treated very well in video games all things considered, I would even say moreso than non-Caucasian ethnicities. There are many minority groups that are not represented at all, and no one cares about them, especially not the homosexuals screaming murder at Tomodachi Collection.

To call Nintendo homophobic or whatever due to not making it possible to be gay in your random relationships in a kiddy game is just making a mountain out of a molehill. I see many people calling it a life simulation game, but I imagine they don't know about how it works, and think it's a Sims clone.

That said, I sure would like to see a game that attempts to include miscellaneous fetishes on top of every orientation in an attempt to satisfy everybody.

I agree they shouldn't have responded at all.

Post edited by moderator because it broke several NWR Forum Rules.

I'm told there's a way to dress up characters as the other gender to "gay marry" in the game without breaking it, and that it has been possible in the JP version for a long time as well (without being removed).

I have no clue why Americans (or Occidentals in general, IDK) believe that you need every video game to be "progressive" and have openly gay characters or the ability to play as a gay character.

It is kinda dumb that they aren't showing at least the top 100 or 1000 as classic rankings, there's also the problem of the player base growing so it's hard to tell your skill from that, but it's better than nothing. I prefer seeing them attempt to balance competitive with casual even if it's not perfect (leaning towards casual is better than leaning towards competitive for Smash Bros. anyway).
