Rock Band 2 Will Support a Competitor's Guitar
« on: October 16, 2008, 11:59:02 AM »
The Guitar Hero III controller will be compatible with Rock Band 2.

Owners of Rock Band 1 & 2 on the Xbox 360 have long been able to choose their preferred guitar peripheral. A member of Harmonix's development team revealed in a post on the Rock Band Forums that Wii owners will finally have that same choice. Rock Band 2 for Wii will fully support the Guitar Hero III guitar.

"We’d like to encourage the interoperability of instruments between platforms so that players can experience music, and our games, with their instrument of choice", wrote the Harmonix developer.

Gaming site IGN also recently made public that the Wii version of Rock Band 2 would include online multiplayer and the ability to download additional songs including those currently available to PS3 and 360 owners.

Rock Band 2 for the Wii will be released before the end of the year.

It won't support World Tour's guitar though? :P

My assumption is that they just haven't been able to test the World Tour guitar, so they don't want to say anything about it. Hypothetically it should work the same as the GH3 guitar, but you can't be certain.

So what about the drums?  If they want a purchase from me it needs to support the instruments I'm getting with Guitar Hero: World Tour as well.

I suppose they're hoping to take away sales from World Tour with this.  A big reason why I'm getting that instead of Rock Band 2 is because I already have the GH3 guitar to use as a bass.  I suppose I could buy this instead because either way my GH3 guitar isn't a wasted investment.

But sorry, Rock Band.  You treated us Wii owners like second class citizens and Guitar Hero didn't so unless World Tour gets absolutely crapped on in reviews they have my brand loyality.  I will however consider buying Rock Band 2 as a disc-only purchase if there's complete controller compatibility between both games.  I'm only going to buy one set of instruments.

this is good news. Now if we can get word of the drums working... they might actually get my money (down the line) ona disc-only purchase if they let me use my GHWT instrumets.

If not, then.. well why bother? No one wants to buy rock band just to play guitar.

Buying World Tour was a no-brainer for me up until the past couple days.  If RB2 is playable with ALL the GHWT peripherals in the end, then I'll still buy the GHWT kit and RB2 disc.  Like the poster above, I was still going to get GHWT simply because I don't want to buy more peripherals - the GH3 guitar is going to be my bass.

GHWT
Drum Kit
Jimi Hendrix
DLC will be less of a headache (pulling it right off SD in-game)
Song Creator

RB2
way more DLC (if they put Who's Next up... that's a big sell for me)

It really comes down to how the games play.  Going to have to wait for the reviews now.

This great news.  As you guys already said, I'm waiting to hear about the drums (they probably just don't know yet), and if those work then I'll happily buy the disc version of RB2 and probably a bit of DLC as well.  But since I'm mainly a guitar player and singer, there's a chance I might buy RB2's disc even without drum support.

Instrument compatibility is long overdue and is a great example of the sort of situation where the hardware manufacturers (Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft) can and should step in to enforce certain interface regulations to make sure their customers don't get screwed.

I don't know why there was ever any resistance to compatibility in the first place.  There may be fewer peripherals sold as a result, but they've just gone from every GH:WT sale hurting them to every GH:WT sale helping them.

DAMNIT

I was planning on skipping this round of music games.  Now I'll probably wind up buying both at some point.  Well played, Harmonix ... well played.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Wait, why aren't DK Bongos supported?  This is infuriating!

Your thinking about Wii Music....

I've avoided any of these rhythm games.... it be nice to know what to get for max compatibility if you were "buying from scratch"
