TG16 Control Unhappiness
« on: November 29, 2006, 01:40:59 AM »

So I pick up SSS last night, finally happy that there's a decent shooter on the virtual console.

I sit down with my arcade joystick (a PS2/Xbox/GCN one made by Nuby), plug it in, and expect some nice relaxing annihilation of aliens.

.... and, nothing.  Apparently, the TG16 emulator doesn't register the D-pad on the GCN controller, only the analog stick.  This sucks even more, as I was planning on using my Hori GCN gamepad as a 5th bomberman controller.

I managed to send some notice to Nintendo through the byzantine support site, but I'm not optimistic that anything is going to happen.

Methinks those type of issues are up to the vendor of the game.

The vendor (who I bought the game from) in this case is the Wii store, which is Nintendo.

Mother of God. How could anyone expect you to play half of those old school games with a joystick? D-Pad all the way. I was really looking forward to using my Hori controller for some VC gaming, but I guess that won't be consistently possible.

I believe the GameCube controller is only 100% compatible with VC titles from Nintendo systems (NES, SNES and N64). GameCube controller compatibility with Genesis and TG16 games is not guaranteed (only the classic controller is).

I don't quite understand all of the virtual console bitching that's been going on lately. Nintendo never said the GameCube controller would work with all VC games. Nintendo never said they'd make any upgrades to the games. Nintendo never said they'd release the true arcade versions of games (like Donkey Kong) on the virtual console - yet everyone has found a reason to complain anyways. Why not complain about the lack of worthwhile games on the VC or the fact that the only game I was looking forward to between launch and the end of the year has inexplicably disappeared from the VC list of upcoming releases (Donkey Kong, Jr.).

Sorry guys - just needed to vent.
PEACE--->Rhoq

Is the D-pad supported on the Classic Controller?
Thanks for listening.

I've been using the Wiimote on it's side for the TG16 games (the TG controller is essentially a Nintendo controller.)  I've no complaints about playing Bomberman as such.  Cube controllers for multi-player doesn't bother me.

The Classic Controller works fine for TG16 games.  I suggest using the Wiimote, if the smaller D-Pad bothers you, pick up a Classic Controller.

Oi, I bought two Hori pads with the intention of using them with the VC. ):

Rhoq, it's not about what was or was not promised by Nintendo, it's about using common sense to make a quality product.

Right now if I'm going to complain about the shopping channel.  I'm going to complain about how it broke my first Wii and that the Internet Channel is not up yet.

Sorry, wrong - I used my GCN pad with Super Star Soldier the day I got it. Both Analog and D-Pad works. It's your Nuby pad that's heiffing things up (or Nintendo's heiffing up your Nuby pad). I'll re-confirm this when I get home.

I tested with the Nuby stick, the Hori pad, a wavebird, and the stock GCN controller.

I'd love to be wrong, though....

Maybe your controller port is messed up.  Try a Gamecube game that you know uses the D-pad and see if it works.

Yes it not garenteed that the Gamecube Controllers will work with Sega or TG16. I have used the classic controller for SSS and the d-pad does work.

Gah, why didn't Nintendo just allow the user to set any button mappings they want? Having default ones is fine, but why not as an option?

Break out a soldering iron.

That's what I plan on doing -- cramming the classic controller into an n64 pad =)

I would assume it is up to whoever created the TG-16 emulator.  My guess is Nintendo and NEC collaborated on it.

If you can manage to do this... I would be interested in buying one of these from you!

*EDIT* - Hey, I just played some of Bonk's Adventure with my Hori Digital Controller (using, of course, the D Pad) and it worked fine...

It probably wouldn't be that hard to turn the classic controller into an N64 controller. The only problem I can see is swapping the analog sticks - it might get kind of ugly. I have no idea how the classic controller works, but I'm going to assume that the right analog is used in place of the C buttons on the N64 pad...so that's a potential snag too. It's all very much possible though.
