He also knee'd Big Ben in his right should after driving him into the ground. Cincinnati should just release him, and no one should hire him.

As someone who works with one of the cities that got boned tonight, I hope the owners collectively fall on road cones rear-end first.

It's a cliche, and it's not always true, but it sure as hell was tonight: Defense wins championships. Cam Newton won the MVP, but he got completely destroyed by Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware, who carried Peyton Manning off into the sunset.

Von Miller is the real deal. Hell of a career for Peyton. Pretty awesome to see the #2 draft pick destroy the #1 draft pick. One of my friends is whining about the game, but he's an Eagles fan anyway. I thought it was a good game...but I'm a Denver fan.

Carolina is my adopted team since moving to NC from IL (although I still pine for the day I see da Bears back in the playoffs & competitive).  It was a good game, even if my preferred team lost.

Both defenses played great, Carolina was simply the first to crack between the two.  That, the Carolina offense not executing on the few opportunities they had, and shooting themselves in the foot with penalties made it insurmountable.

I was rooting for Carolina, but didn't mind either team winning.  Both teams deserved to be there, two defenses and one offense were playing like they wanted to win.

Can't believe that Marshawn Lynch is retiring. I was hoping for one more year with him. Hopefully that frees up some money for a couple promising rookies in the draft.

I find it hilarious that a team that made a double murder suspect captain for well over a decade made a big stink about taking a guy off their draft board because he smoked weed in college.

Right now is Peak Optimism for Browns fans. Exciting new coach, lots of potential from a talented draft class, Josh Gordon reinstated, and Robert Griffin III tearing it up in the preseason. It's all downhill from here.

Wasn't his crime obstruction of justice? But yeah, they pick a weird time to clean up their image.

Also, the NFL needs to get the stick out its ass about marijuana.  Honestly, I think if the NFL went easier on it, it might even shift the national opinion a smidge (not that it isn't heading in that direction already).

Do you know what one of NFL's biggest sponsors is?  Bud Light plastered EVERYWHERE.  I assure you, it's all about business, not morals.  Although obviously it doesn't help that Marijuana is only legal in a handful of states and the Fed just stated it will stay classified the same way cocaine is.

There's a little more nuance to the Fed's official stance on the drug, but I worry this line of discussion bleeds too far over the politics line, so we should probably let it go.  But I totally see your point.  Alcohol and other recreational drugs pretty much compete for the exact same market space.

Win total over/under for the Jets is 7.5-8 on most sites I've found. I'd take the over (but not by much). The schedule is difficult, but it's front loaded, so I'm hoping for a late season playoff push on the strength of what appears to be a strong defense. Kind of like last year, but hopefully with a better ending.

Is there a college thread too?

Unless I've missed something over the years, I don't believe we've had a college football thread, which is odd considering how many big fans of it we've had on here in that time.

RG3's going to injured reserve, but the Browns are basically tanking this season so it doesn't really matter.

I knew the Jets had an inaccurate, weak armed QB who makes poor decisions. That's life in the NFL where there's usually only 15 or so decent QBs available for 32 teams. It's up to the front office and coaches to figure out how to win without a dominant passer. What's more immediately troubling is getting seven sacks and still letting Andy Dalton complete 77% of his passes for 350+. It doesn't bold well for a secondary that has traditionally been a strength of the team. Otherwise, Jets looked pretty good and should contend for a wild card if they can tighten up some stuff.

That was the Jets at their best and worst last night. Luckily more best, and it was on the road in a short week against a divisional rival that has recently had their number. I'm always hard on Fitzpatrick so I should acknowledge he played a lot better. That's the kind of decision making they need from him to win. The secondary was still burned a couple times, but they played better too. The DL is arguably the best in the NFL, and the LBs are good, so they should be ok with a coverage adjustment. They just won't be able to aggressively blitz as often as usual, which may not be that much of a problem with their front seven. I'm reasonably pleased with all of the offensive and defensive units. They are playing relatively well so far. This schedule is front loaded, so they should be in the thick of the wild card late if they are .500 through the first half.
