As a lover of the medium, I would really appreciate to not throw anime under the bus because of poor video game writing that has produced stereotypical and one-dimensional characters.

As someone who also watches a lot of anime, I can't say anime typically fares much better, especially as the industry has veered increasingly towards moe & otaku pandering. Stereotypes & 1D characters abound. You get your quality shows from time to time, but I've found the shows released in the last 5 years to be substantially inferior to those produced in the 2000s & 1990s.  But this is, of course, a discussion for another thread.

Fire Emblem Fates stays up top in an uneventful week of releases.

I second that, having watched a lot of anime myself. I'm speaking from personal experience in terms of more popular and contemporary shows.

Reading back, I shouldn't have singled out video game writing when I meant writing in general.

I believe that Sturgeon's Revelation applies to anime evenly over the years. The trends may change and might not be to your tastes, but the quality has remained consistent. Granted, you might have to deal outside your wheel house to find that quality.

I disagree with the statement that shows from the 90s and 00s, but I have little to back up my disagreement as my experience with shows from the respective decades is spotty. Also, I heavily associate the mid-00s as the deepest point of the moe hell hole. Granted, we traded blatant moe girls shows with adaptions of questionable light novels with moe girls, but at least the light novels try to tell some sort of serialized story (this is what I tell myself at night).

To accurately argue my disagreement would probably mean dueling lists of TV shows, OVAs, and movies, and that sounds fucking unbearable. For me, I have watched quite a few shows that I love or really enjoy in the 2010s so far, so that's my emotional truth. Then again, I have indulged heavily in what could be considered the most popular, pandering, and male-otaku oriented franchises. I could be part of the problem.

Indeed it would be, especially when my list would include some of the best animated television shows ever made while yours would be...well...the kind of titles that Japanese companies used to have to bundle with worthwhile shows in contracts to force Western publishers to release them in NA.  ;)

Honestly, there are good shows released every year, but they feel fewer & further between these days, harder to notice, and certainly don't seem to excite people like they used to.

Ceric: Oh, a spar on record? Heavens no! I don't have the heart for a heated argument. Or maybe I greatly fear I will become a terrible internet person if I do so.

broodwars: Previous comments triggered a knee jerk reaction that rejects the notion of "the good 'ole days", "the long-past golden times", "they don't make them like they used to", or any myriad of sentiments that the quality of an artistic medium has categorically declined. I believe (or want to believe) that the quality is there if you search for it or expand your horizons.

Conversely, I have to admit that certain trends or aspects that served as gateways to an art form may have declined or been replaced. In video games, difficult platforming challenges giving way to cleverly-placed collectibles. In anime, potentially rich adult characters being replaced by infantilized school children.

As for the lack of cross-fandom hits in anime, I think that is the sign of the times with entertainment being less communal, more on-demand, and more specialized. I recognize that it is so rare to see a 2-4 cour (24-52 episodes) anime series that a lot of people love compared to the past, but maybe that's where the all arts and entertainment landscapes are shifting. Well, at least television shows.

Fatty_The_Hutt: I have not watched Black Butler.

I have read some criticisms of Attack on Titan in regards to pacing issues, plot holes/conveniences, and story logic. For me, I found it to be a thrilling, highly enjoyable, and exciting show that I relished watching week to week. Perhaps the show falls apart on further thought or repeated viewings, but I currently believe it earns the joy, excitement, and fandom it has created.

Splatoon has the legs of a gymnast. Should be coming up on 2 million (WW) before the end of July. I have to hand it to Nintendo on this one, for everything wrong they have done with the Wii U, the software has been their best overall output in a decade..maybe ever!

Hmmm. Can't say I agree with that, but the way I see Wii U is not unlike the GameCube- when Nintendo is backed into a corner, their software usually comes out swinging (usually). However, Wii U is missing a few select titles to push it other that threshold, but they're coming eventually so I'm satisfied with the console so far.

I think it's a little premature to say the game has "legs like a gymnast." It is selling pretty well though, especially for a Wii U game. When you say "legs like a gymnast" that makes me think of something like GTAV or any Call of Duty game, or Mario Kart Wii.

The Yo-kai Watch action RPG spin-off takes the top spot ahead of The Great Ace Attorney. Animal Crossing: New Leaf has 4 million in its sights.

Jeez, how can someone's "emotional truth" be so damned wrong?

Everything is terrible now.

2. The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
3. Lego: Jurassic World (360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3, 3DS, Wii U, Vita)
4. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
5. Splatoon (Wii U)
6. Minecraft (360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4)

Yeah Splatoon, staying in the pack! Didn't even slip!
Arkham Knight is no surprise. Elder Scrolls Online does not deserve #2 (At least going by the PC version I played a year ago)
Lego weak on the WiiU is a bummer.

Arkham Knight launch month > Arkham City launch month, on smaller userbases. And yet stuff doesn't sell in the summer  ::)

Splatoon's up to 455k combined in the US alone. Hopefully it's not skipping leg day next month.
