Not just a new IP, but one in a genre that historically hasn't been that popular there.

I think the style and characters were a bigger factor than genre or content. Squid Kids were the hook!

Will this crack the Top10 next month? Only on sale for 3 days in May and I say sure will, maybe even top5?

I think it cracks the Top 10, but hovers around the low-end. #7 or #8 sounds about right unless the Amiibo insanity boosted it higher to around #5. Witcher 3 probably has the #1 spot in the bag, and there's just too many multiplatform games for Splatoon to chart much higher.

I think it'll chart well in the US.  Other than Witcher 3 and Puzzles and Dragon's, most of the stuff in May were re-releases like Borderlands GOTY, Shadows of Modor.

As for Japan sales, they were a bit higher than I figures but that could be do to "price factor" as well.  But as it stands now it's first week sales has it 3rd highest for the WII U behind MK8 and SSB if you don't count launch titles.  That means it's selling better than Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong, Xenoblade, Zelda, ect which is quite a big deal IMO for Nintendo.

If sales maintain "ever-green" like most Nintendo titles this might break 2+ million mark WW by year end which isn't to bad for a new IP.

Not just a new IP, but one in a genre that historically hasn't been that popular there.

I think the style and characters were a bigger factor than genre or content. Squid Kids were the hook!

When I first saw Splatoon I thought the graphic style and paint gimmick was all to make something family friendly but I now think the real plan was to make it appeal to Japan.

Though I think to an American audience it does come across as more of kid-friendly design which may not go over as well since we're used to our shooters having guns and death.  And kids here think stuff like Call of Duty is cool.  Of course if Nintendo was throwing away Western appeal to make something fly in Japan, despite it's clearly smaller market size, it wouldn't be the first time.

It would be nice if Nintendo interpreted this to mean that there is interest in new Nintendo IP.  Not every new IP is going to stick but things will just stagnate with the same old franchises.  Oh and EAD made this game.  So often Nintendo has their more niche teams try out new stuff and it doesn't stick.  But EAD made Pikmin, the Wii Series and now this.  When they branch outside of Mario and Zelda it usually works out pretty good.  EAD is the straw that stirs Nintendo's drink.  Anytime I say I want Nintendo to make more new IP I'm talking about EAD, not some third tier team making some niche game that never gets localized.

Though some quick research reveals that Steel Diver was an EAD project.  Well, I guess they're not perfect.

Japan status: Still a squid and a kid. Also, a rare week of Wii U sales increasing after the release of a big game. Stella Glow debuts with 13k copies sold. Stella Glow seems to be another JRPG for the 3DS, but it has gained notoriety due to developer Imageepoch having their CEO disappear and filing for bankruptcy.

That's with a year head start and a console that sells in Japan. Xbone not selling in Japan isn't a good excuse though, but the point is Sony and Microsoft are competing with each other, and that's about it. Sure you can say since Wii U is a console that it's competing, but there is never (okay very close to never) a decision for someone to choose between buying a Wii U, a PS4 or an Xbone, it's between buying a PS4 or an Xbone and buying a Wii U or not buying a Wii U. Look at every game in that top 10 that isn't Splatoon or Smash Bros - none of them are on Wii U at all.

I love Nintendo and the Wii U, but let's not pretend like it's a competitor anymore.

Pet peeve: I don't like it when Nintendo people or anyone else say or imply that Nintendo platforms are not in direct or indirect competition with other platform holders. Reggie slides in to this often, but usually shifts it to the notion that every other from of entertainment is their competitor (which is correct). Nintendo is a competitor and is in a extremely low position.

. . . now I feel like a jerk for getting hung up over semantics and connotations.

I'd say the fact that the xBone and PS4 compete at all means they are far too similar. Sure, both systems have multiplatform games, but only a handful of them are good and available on PC with better optimization.

Of course, actually having multiplatform games is better than nothing, so they have Nintendo beat there. But at least the Wii U has unique content and hey, landing in the middle of the top ten after the last week of the month while not being multiplatform is impressive in its own right.

Well Nintendo really isn't a competitor with them since the types of games that sell on each system are completely different.  All the top sellers on Xbone/PS4 are mature FPS, Open World or Sports games while the top sellers on the Wii U are Mario and other family friendly titles.  This is the reason the only third party games Nintendo gets are family oriented games because these games actually sell better on the Wii U then PS4/One.

The average 18-34 males gamer who Microsoft and Sony are spending most of their money trying to court don't care about Nintendo and never will, which is why Nintendo isn't exactly going out of their way to appeal to them.  Smartphones and the 3DS are the Wii U's biggest competitors since those are what actually appeals to the audience that might want one by offering them much cheaper alternatives.

Just to clarify, I'm not trying to show some sort of Nintendo bias with my previous statement. Nintendo does what they do, but Sony and Microsoft try too hard to outdo each other and it feels pretty same-y. Though Sony does have a healthy amount of Japanese titles, that's likely not the audience they're capitalizing on.
