Title: Let's Talk Amiibo!

Went by Toys R' Us at launch where they had Amiibo for 3 for $30 so I picked up 3.

Got Pikachu, Samus, and Princess Peach.

First impression is that they look nice.  I'm sure not E3 nice but still nicer than Skylanders.  I also met the Nashville Nintendo Rep but I didn't get her contact info.

At least in my area Samus was the hottest seller but, there was a good supply of some of the other ones.

I couldn't find a thread just for general Amiibo talk so feel free to share you thoughts as you get figures.

Also without trying I got into a conversation with a good amount of the clerks who are getting Amiibos.  I honestly don't think all of them had WiiUs.

Kirby Amiibo looks alright. It doesn't have annoying plastic supports which is already a plus. It's pretty decent plastic, never had Skylanders or Disney Infinity figurines so I can't compare. You can notice in the photo the "seam' where the bottom part of the figurine joins with the top part of his body. It goes under his arms, then back up to about halfway around his back.

That is a bit Sloppy on the Kirby Figurine.

I stopped by Wal-Mart on my way home from work to check them out. Sadly, there we only about six hanging on hooks near the actual Wii U games -- the rest were on a shelf several aisles over and facing the back wall. While they had quite a few of them, they didn't seem to have a terribly large selection. It seemed like they had an abundance of the figures they thought would be popular, which were Mario, Link, Peach, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and Pikachu, and then several copies of Fox and Samus as well. I only saw one copy each of Villager and Wii Fit Trainer, but they were on a restocking shelf near the department register.

I thought the figures looked pretty neat -- neat enough to convince me to purchase Little Mac when he is released in a couple of weeks. I really liked the packaging, which I am going to try very carefully to preserve by using an xacto knife to slit open so I can slide the figure out.

At this time, I only plan on buying the figures that I think are either very cool, or a really good value. Right now, it seems that Link is probably the best value, as he offers the best functionality between three games -- Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, and of course, Smash Bros. It seems like this sort of stuff will be constantly changing though, so I'll have to keep an eye on it. As of this moment, I plan on purchasing the aforementioned Little Mac, Mega Man, Shulk, and possily Meta Knight and Toon Link.

Also, can you register these suckers on Club Nintendo? You really ought to be able to...

The lack of an ability to use these in game without opening then annoys me greatly. :(

I have to say that my Son likes the Amiibo quite a bit.  That probably why he is playing the games.  Now that I have them out I like all the models I have and dang Samus has little nooks and crannies all over and a Nice metallic paint job.  As a figure alone this is not an overly premium price point.

You'll just have to buy two of each. One for show and one for play. ;)

I'd love to pick a few up but I already blew most of my gaming budget for the year. Still on the fence about "catching them all" and just getting the ones I like or have higher value.

So I was looking at the WiiU Quick Start screen and the add they had in the little top banner for Amiibo said:

"Unlock the Power thats inside"

I'm sitting there going there is a whole generation who will finish that with the Pokemon Theme Song...

I got Link and Samus.  Pretty easy to set them up, and I let them join in on my first 8-player smash.

I went to a Best Buy looking for them, and I think all the ones they had were pre-ordered.  Target seemed to have a good amount (enough to not need to check with Gamestop).  I find it weird that Link has a colored support post, but most others seem to be clear.  Samus just had the plastic under the feet, so it's not even that noticeable.

Oh look, can't be a thread about a game with figurines without pokepal shitting all over it.

Playful jest aside, I didn't intend on picking any up, but after seeing them in store, my curiosity got the best of me and I picked up a Kirby amiibo.  I'm surprised it was so easy to see where the seam is where I assume the different pieces got glued together near the bottom of Kirby's body.  That said, I was more curious about their interactivity and ability to "learn" while leveling up to 50.

He's at level 10 for us so far, and while he's a glorified punching bag for me, he's providing plenty of challenge for my wife, who is a big novice in Smash Bros.  I've read some people lamenting how their Amiibo's are kicking their ass at level 50, i'm interested to see how that turns out for me.

Kirby is by far the worst of the figurines as a figurine.  Which is odd because he's so simple.

To me, it's his pose.  I already have a plush of him in that pose (because when I saw it at the store it made me happy and I'm an adult and I do not need your judgement).  I think his "hiiiiii!" pose (with the waving) would've been better.

Saw a bunch of Amiibo figures at the mall this weekend. They look better than I had expected based on the internet backlash, but not as good as I had secretly hoped when announced.

Not buying any because I don't yet own or have plans to own any of the games they work in... but would consider picking up a few characters at some point when that changes.  We'll probably end up with one for me and one for each kid; three figures seems like plenty of Amiibo for our household.

That would have been a good one or maybe one of the more interest Kirby modes.

I have the feeling that the Villager and Wii Fit trainer are going to be one of the ones that will be only available for a short time. Since other than SSB they don't have any games that they work with.

When I picked up my Smash today, the clerk mentioned that there are "super rare amiibo". He mentioned a dual arm canon Samus (arm canon on both arms) among some other variants. Normally I would have shrugged it off as poppycock but I would like to know if anybody else have heard anything about this? Maybe these are misprints or some other goof.

As previously stated, I've decided to only buy amiibo that offer good value (i.e. work across several different games), or that I think look really cool. Hopefully, those two things will overlap in the future.

At this moment, I find myself rather torn. I'm quite interested in the Wii Fit Trainer amiibo, which obviously doesn't fall into the value category. However, I do like the look of this particular amiibo, except for the clear plastic cast that helps connect her foot to the base. To be honest, I really don't like the look of any amiibo that have any type of support in that regard (Link, Fox, Captain Falcon, etc.). Meta Knight is the only one whose awesome look isn't really hindered by the support, in my opinion. Little Mac, Mega Man, and possibly even King Dedede, remain on my future purchase list.

The problem is, Wii Fit Trainer likely won't be available much longer. Should I indulge my mild interest, or save my $14 for future amiibos (and possibly regret my decision)?

Unless I'm mistaken, Yoshi is also slated to work with Mario Party 10. Yoshi is one of the few I've considered picking up because his model looks pretty good, and the potential value seems rather good.

Also, here in Seattle the Jimi Hendrix Music Project (music museum) has a wing currently open for indie gaming. Included old and current titles on a rotating schedule.

I spent 30 minutes in a Black Friday queue in Game just to pick up an amiibo. I purchased Smash the day before on impulse at Tesco and thought I'd grab an amiibo to see just what they would do. I finally got to the till and opted for a Yoshi cos his amiibo is probably the coolest looking one out so far and took him home.
I then had to try and explain to my wife and mother in law what the hell it was. The mother in law was very confused, "What is it? What does it do? Does it light up? Do its arms move?" "It does stuff in my games when I put it on the controller (now sod off and let me try it)" Wife - "£12? You say the babies toys are a rip off and you paid £12 for that? It's arms don't even move! The box says its for Smash Bros, you don't even have Smash Bros? Me - (lie) "No I don't but it works with Mario Kart and other games too".

So I managed to lie about not owning Smash and then went on to rip it from it's packaging. Screw packaging it looks better out the box and my now 6 month old son will no doubt destroy it in time when I'm not looking anyway. To those of you who are annoyed that it won't work when it's still in the box, be fair, Nintendo had to make it that way. Otherwise people would be buying them, unlocking in game features at home, then returning them to the store.

I stealthily swapped Smash out of the disc drive and put Mario Kart in and went to the amiiibo section. I placed my Yoshi on the gamepad and got a new Yoshi skin. Oh no wait, no I didnt, I got a Yoshi racing suit for my Mii, who the hell wants to race as their Mii, Yoshi suit or not? Meh

Then I went back to Smash, here it's more worthwhile I think. You can train you amiibo to fight alongside you or against you or something like that. I still don't really get why. So I made my custom amiibo Yoshi. He's a red Yoshi, I called him Roshi (I know I'm a frigging genius) and now I have him fight in Smash. Only problem is to select him I have to tap the amiibo on the gamepad on the character select screen, which I'm sure will get tedious soon and I have to tap him on again to save his progress after the smashing is over. Then you can upgrade his stats, I had him eat all the upgrades, but (I may be wrong here) they didn't seem to accumulate on top of each other, I think each one just replace the last, if so how on earth can I max out those stat bars?

I've yet to try it in Hyrule Warriors, but I expect I'll just get some rupees added and I'm done with that game anyway. The Mario Kart feature was beyond pointless and like most things in Smash it's use in there was just confusing. Still he does look cool on my shelf and I'm sure I'll be getting some more for Christmas, not from my wife she doesn't buy me things I actually want, but I think my sister bought me a couple already.

I'd be really shocked if a skylanders-esqe game doesn't come out in the next year or so, or at least I would be if this wasn't a Nintendo product, but I do hope one does. Part of me is also kind of tempted to buy Wii Fit trainer, despite me not liking the "character" or the figurine, just because it may become rare, but it's pointless because I'll take it out of its packaging anyway!

I'm hooked already though, this is going to get expensive I'm sure!

emceeamg:  Stats balance in Smash.  If you look at the right of the item you'll see how much it pluses and minusses from a stat.

Take my Peach for example.

I fed her Brawn so it took down here defense.  Plus there is special abilities on some items.  My Peach will always start with a Fire Flower for example.

Well, it looked like ****, honestly. I am going to hold out because it was the only one they had and I'm hoping there was a reason for that.

Returned my Wii Fit Trainer today.

Thought about the "3 for $30" deal at Toys R Us, but couldn't find three Amiibo figures I wanted. Villager, Pit, Kirby, and Little Mac all look awesome. The only one of those figures actually in stock at any stores in my city was Kirby.

Then I thought about grabbing Zelda and Link along with Kirby, with the idea that Sheik would be a good addition later... but just not that keen on buying into Amiibo when the figures I really want aren't going to be available.

The sad part is that I'll probably still try to grab the Shulk figure if I can find one. Why?  I honestly don't know at this point.

Returned my Wii Fit Trainer today.

Why would you do that?

A Gamestop internal email has reiterated what a Canadian retailer had said earlier regarding the discontinuation of the Villager, Marth and Wii Fit Trainer Amiibos. Nintendo has had 3 chances to clear up any doubts and people still don't know what's going on. It also feels insane to discontinue figures(Marth, Villager) that have potential usage down the line with future games in their respective franchises.

Couple that with the rumor going around that GameStop is going to pull a "Xenoblade Chronicles" with the Shulk figurine. They'll order enough figurines to fulfil pre-orders, then once demand skyrockets, a new shipment of "used" figurines will arrive to be sold above MSRP.

Nintendo is screwing up the goodwill they managed to create with Amiibos.

...

What else was I going to do?  All of the figures I want are (apparently) rare and expensive.  Wii Fit Trainer is (apparently) rare, but has relatively low demand. I could try to scalp it, or deal with PayPal to sell at cost to someone online with stupid shipping fees added in... but this way someone local will find the toy when it's put back on shelves and be super happy for Christmas.

(Ok, maybe it will just be a scalper who finds it and is happy. Hopefully not though.)

What goodwill is that exactly?  I haven't seen a lot of goodwill being earned with the way Amiibo has been handled at any level, but maybe I'm just missing something.

I haven't even been looking but I did see a bunch of Amiibos at Hasting's yesterday. I haven't checked the video game stores. The main ones I am interested in are Mario, DK, Yoshi, Link, and Toad so I don't expect them to go anywhere anytime soon. After looking at the Mario figure yesterday I am not entirely sure that it is worth the asking price.

I picked up my GameStop pre-order for the Zelda amiibo. For me, the figure looks fine considering the price. Then again, my recent experience with such things are with pricey model kits of 1/100 scale Gundams and Macross and $40 Nendoroids.

As for using Zelda in Smash U, it's a novel and handy thing to fill out the player count with a CPU character that I have some tangible attachment to. Customizing specials, feeding skills, and raising the level I find cute and endearing. Also, Zelda brings back gifts after a few rounds of matches!

Thanks for the heads up. I pre-ordered Ike and Shulk since they are my top priority from wave 3. I'm trying to co-ordinate with my sister to collect all of them since I don't think I can afford to collect all of them at this time. Then we can at least secure the DLC they unlock. Our favorite figures all seem to be different so it may work out perfectly.

Have you reached out to Amazon's customer support? Every time I have had an issue with Amazon or one of their marketplace vendors they have been fantastic in resolving my issue.

You can't ask them to honor the purchase? I would continue to see if you can get them to find one for you while you hunt the other stores for him. Maybe we'll get a second run of wave 2 and they could honor it at that time?

So, now that there are guides and people have more experiences training their amiibos, what has everybody been doing? I reset my Kirby figure tonight and tried training him with more 1v1 mirror matches and matches against level 9 characters. Above all I just want him to be a little troll and taunt people after a KO.

I thought Captain Falcon isn't coming out until the end of the month along with other Wave 2 stragglers. Did Amazon completely cancel the preorder?

As for training amiibo, I haven't gotten back to it. I'm focused on the single player content of Smash Bros. for Wii U and they don't allow amiibo as far as I know. An oversight, in my mind.

I had also heard that the second half of wave 2 (Luigi, Pit, Captain Falcon) had been delayed. I've also heard that some places already received shipments and are already selling them. I wouldn't worry too much unless the order is outright cancelled.

And I was hoping I could limp along until January or at least the end of the month to pre-order Shulk. That might not be happening now. You know, for figures a lot of people saw as cash grabs, they seem to be selling extremely well.

Edit: Shulk Amiibo pre-ordered.

Hmm... some people might have made those complaints.

Mine were more along the lines of:
(1) production models are significantly worse than display models, with some poor decisions (like Link's yellow stick) standing out as particularly unfortunate
(2) they are slightly overpriced, but that's not a huge surprise given the source
(3) distribution has been very poor and it's frustrating for anyone who doesn't want the main Nintendo mascots to be driven to an absolutely ridiculous scalper market to get the figures they want, while NoA and retailers make contradictory and unclear statements about whether specific figures will be reprinted/restocked

And which one of those complaints are wrong?   :confused;

Amiibo can official go **** itself at this point. I was skeptical from the start but still interested in picked up several figures that don't have nice Nintendo toys already available. But nearly every figure I had interest in collecting quickly turned into a "rare collector's item". If Nintendo isn't going to make enough stock available to meet demand then I'll just keep my money in my pocket rather than giving some profiteering scalper the time of day.

Again, ejamer, I wish you lived in Japan, where these things are extremely well-stocked and I could pick one off the shelf for you.

Actually. I could probably send you one of whatever you want, if you'd be willing to cover the shipping price. I don't care about the figure's price, they're nine dollars and three cents here. Plus you could get some spiffy Japanese packaging if you're into that sort of thing.

Actually, despite being very vocal about my frustration above, I've strongly considered importing already.

There are a couple of websites that offer imports, and while their stock seems to fluctuate that might be the best option currently available. By the time you pay shipping and extra fees it's not cheap... but it's also not stupidly expensive. Plus I'm ok paying slightly inflated prices to importers (who, in my mind, actually offer a service) instead of buying from local scalpers.

At this point I'd want to wait for Shulk to come out though - he and Villager are the only two "must own" Amiibo figures for me, although there are about 8 others (Fire Emblem and Kirby character sets, plus a few others) that look interesting.

If you are serious about the offer, let me know. I'd get back to you after Shulk comes out (by which time we'll probably have a better idea if Villager etc are going to be restocked in North America). Would definitely pay full price plus shipping plus a tip for your time/effort.  Hahaha... but based on Uncle Bob's comment you might've already bitten off more than you can chew - or accidentally opened a side-business of sorts to pick up some drinking money.

The offer is open for anyone. In the words of Shulk- I'm really feelin' the holiday spirit and I'll stand by my word in the months to come.

I'm well-aware of the crappy Gamestop Shulk situation and I'd be more than willing to nab some of the exclusives here. And I'm a toy owner, so I'll search for good paint applications and non-warped sculpts.

None of those complaints are wrong, but the rhetoric across the internet in general, not anyone in particular here, seems to be a little more extreme than your reasonable complaints.

So why is everything well stocked in Japan and not here?  Are there retailer exclusives there or is that just a US thing?  Is it NoA being completely incompetent here and NoJ having a clue or is it retailers here being less willing to order stock and devote shelf space to something Wii U based?  I can kind of see retailers not wanting to have tons of of lesser known characters that they think they'll end up stuck with and Nintendo not wanting to have warehouses full of figures they can't get on store shelves, but after seeing the success they've had, it is kind of bizarre that they haven't said that they're going to produce more of something that people clearly want.

I don't think that NoA is incompetent, but they are cautious to a fault about what (and how much) gets released for products outside of their main franchises. Anything that doesn't have huge sales expectations seems to be viewed with extreme caution.  From a business perspective that's probably not a bad thing, but it doesn't help collectors.

As you say, I have a hard time believing there won't be a restock given how quickly things sold out. Seems like they are leaving money on the table... but maybe they are ok with that?  Maybe they'd rather leave money on the table than produce too much?  Maybe they just want to create urgency to pad sales and have every intention of reprinting figures later?  Who knows!

The only ideas here are that they could have is that the cards will meets the same sales standards as the amiibos because everyone is clearly buying them for their functions. Or that they are lying to ensure stock is completely sold. One is incompetence, the other is, well, business.
Title: Re: Let's Talk Amiibo!

A lot of Nintendo/Amiibo fans don't understand that there's a fixed AND variable cost for every production run of a product like a toy.

I assume these items are made in a mold.  Therefore, there's a set-up cost for the machinery to be set to make a Marth character, then there's also the cost of plastics, whatever processses take place in the molding process, labor,  and then packaging & distribution costs.  This is a very rough estimate from someone who knows a bit about manufacturing, but not explicitly about toys.
Let's say Nintendo decides to cater to fans and do a 10,000 PC run of Marth's as a last run.  Let's assume maybe a fixed cost of $50,000 to have everything set-up to do a production run, materials & labor amount to $2/figure, and shipping amounts to $1/figure.  That amounts to approx. $8/figure to have a production run of 10k toys from production to on-the-shelf.  This is the cost of the unit, no profit figured into this.

Nintendo probably has an idea of what profit margin they need on these for them to be considered profitable.  Let's work backwards from the $13/unit price to see what Nintendo would need to sell these at assuming they want a 30% profit margin.
Retailers have an average 40% markup from their cost for retail price.  Taking this percentage off the retail price, this means they need to purchase each Amiibo from Nintendo at a price point of $7.80/unit.  Let's also assume that Nintendo ideally wants to make a minimum profit margin of 30% per unit - this means they need to manufacture the amiibos at 30% less than what target or wal-mart would buy them at that $7.80 price point from, approx. $ 5.46/figure.

So under my unscientific scenario:They could always spread that fixed cost over a larger production run, but how many people ACTUALLY want a Marth amiibo vs the loud online chatter?  And what's the risk of producing far too many of these and then Nintendo sitting on Marth stock they can't give away to the retailers?

It's easy to say "Nintendo's missing-out on all this profit", but if you have any innate manufacturing/supply management knowledge, along with undertstanding Nintendo as a business has to have a level of expected profit with each decision they make, it's not hard to understand why they may not reconsider doing a second run of these characters, especially if they're going to offer the same in-game functionality in a much cheaper collectable card version down the road.

Probably not as high as it is now but I would think Marth would actually be a solid seller considering the recent popularity of Fire Emblem and a lack of figures.

Why is Japan so well stocked?  Smaller Population, Less Logistical and Shipping Costs, Home Country, less competition, and probably higher profit margin.

I would credit that argument if it was Mario or any of those other figures that have like three hundred other variants. But Fire Emblem, Shulk, and Captain Falcon figures are nonexistent. Fire Emblem has a huge fan base now, Xenoblade is expanding very quickly thanks to Smash, and Captain Falcon is, well, Captain Falcon. They have very few available alternatives if they have any at all, but the fanbase that will buy it will eat it up like mad. So make a 2nd, 3rd, and possibly a 4th run if the demand is still there. Right now, we have some people buying about 20 figures at once so they can charge them for triple the price later on ebay. Would rather see that profit go to Nintendo then some douche on ebay. No, there is no guarantee on profit for a 3rd or 4th run, but right now there is profit to be made on a 2nd run for some of these figures.

Fire Emblem: Awakening sold very well.  That said, Marth was only a character in the game in the form of Lucina taking his name for a while.  How many people outside of fans of Smash Brothers and longtime fans of Fire Emblem REALLY care about Marth?

Xenoblade is popular and well-regarded by those who are fans of large RPGs, but the fanbase who would buy Shulk are 1) Smash devotees, 2) Xenoblade fans, & 3) people who are super into collectables.

The reason why you see piles of Mario, Pikachu, Yoshi, Kirby, and Donkey Kong on the shelf is because Nintendo expect those to have the long-reaching interest from those outside of their core gaming base.  These are the evergreen franchise characters they'll have longer-term plans for Amiibo because of all the cross-over games they're in.

Nintendo doesn't care about if you have to pay Mr. Ebay scalper $75 for a Marth or Villager figurine.  That doesn't factor into their business decisions.  They care about enough guaranteed demand to where if they go through the trouble of producing enough stock to sell at the profit margin they want, that they'll for sure sell-through all the stock because they don't want to be stuck with the remaining stock once the market is flooded with more Marth Characters than what the vocal minority actually want.

Is it possible Nintendo just grossly underestimated demand for Amiibo? I would think they want to strike while the "iron is hot".

Also, now that Amiibo is a "hit", can I get my Diablo style dungeon crawler now? I still think while support in other franchises are awesome, Amiibo(s) need its own game. And leveling up in other games helps you in the main Amiibo game as well. (gonna need some kinda of "banking system" since the figures only support 1 save)

So my brother went to the Nintendo World Store over the weekend for holiday lucre, and was disappointed to find only the common Amiibos available and no Wave 2. But when he was checking out with a consolation Samus he spotted a Little Mac behind the counter, maybe a return or stock an employee was trying to reserve, and snapped it up. And that was my Christmas present, currently going for $37.99 from Amazon sellers. And I of course opened it and killed the value because I need it to be as possible to minimize embarrassment.

We were excited to try out the Smash Bros. functionality, but after about two hours I came away pretty underwhelmed. I thought leveling the little mofos up would be an ongoing process, but after two hours of free-for-alls with two humans and two Amiibos, both hit max 50. They could handily beat us by the end, but otherwise aren't all that distinct from regular CPUs (though they seem to react weirdly to large gaps on stages). I'm not sure if I'll bother scanning MacArthur in again, as the only thing to do really is max out their stats by feeding them items and thus make them dominate even more. I was disappointed to find that you can't do co-op modes with your Amiibo, I think it would have helped us bond.

Also I never realized that Fox head get up looks like an NES accessory before.

I went to return a duplicate Christmas Amiibo at the Nintendo World Store today (stupidly thinking that it wouldn't be crowded in Manhattan the day after Christmas), and observed a fun phenomenon. On the shelves they had the usual common Amiibos (of which Luigi is one apparently), but on the shelf behind the counter they had a few stacks of figures piled so as to not show the front of the packages to people in line. These were Little Mac, Pit, and Captain Falcon. The line was super long, and behind me I heard a number of fevered conversations about hoping to get one of the few Falcons left from the "rare" stock behind the counter, with people cursing and wincing as the figures depleted. I happened to get to the counter with two Falcons left, and traded my Samus for one. What fun! I'm gonna keep this one in the package as I can't imagine there'll be another F-Zero game any time soon that would inspire another production run.

Their current implementation of amiibo is a novel extra at best and an afterthought at worst. I'm okay with that since the toys-to-life idea is having plastic, portable keys to digital locks once you remove all the magic and wonder. I look forward to having a Captain Falcon costume for my Mii in Mario Kart 8 (made sure to pre-order the Captain). Leveling up customized CPU fighters in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is oddly endearing in a "I'm pretending to be a trainer!" way.

The Hyrule Warriors implementation is the most useful in my eyes as you can get up to five daily random draws at rupees, crafting materials, and weapons with different amiibo. This leans in to a RPG-grinding nature which is what toys-to-life feed on to my limited knowledge.

I guess my thing is I really liked Melee because it had so much content and tribute to Nintendo's glory days these last two it seems they are just over stuffed, the game play I never understood I suck at the actual game. As I fellow fighting game fanatic and as someone who put something close to 1000hrs in melee (and I am still only average) ITS NOT A FIGHTING GAME. Even with the "advanced techs" like "Wave-dashing" and some called "perfect pivoting" it's still not a true fighter or its an incredably shallow one.

TO THE AMIIBO: Rarity or not, if these were simply trophies for Smash with NO NFC, I think people would still be after them for, maybe not this extent or frenzy but very popular none the less. There have been plenty of crazes that make less sense than this. (pogs, Beanie Babies, Lallaloopsy,) Think its crazy now...wait till the next poke'mon game uses this tech and its over!

I suck at the actual game. I thought it was supposed to be a fighting game but I am a fighting game fanatic and this does not play like a real fighting game at all.
As I fellow fighting game fanatic and as someone who put something close to 1000hrs in melee (and I am still only average) ITS NOT A FIGHTING GAME.

Hyrule Warriors presents, in my opinion, the worst implementation of Amiibo with the spinner. Especially when you realize that the data for the spinner is probably on your hard drive already with a patch and the only reason you can't use it is because you don't have the ugliest amiibo of them all

"I will defeat Ganon with the golden power of this ugly yellow bar"

I prefered the first model of Link where the bar was clear. The yellow bar is ugly. Though they should have created a better pose for Link that didn't require such a clunky stand.

Ostensibly, you can unlock Link's spinner (and the Mario Kart 8 Mii costumes) with any one's amiibo so you can just have one person with the Link amiibo and unlock the spinner for all of the Hyrule Warriors save data among your group.

Operative word being "ostensibly."

I'm trying to divide up the amiibos with my friends and family so that we can cover all of these unlocks.

I received the Link figure as a gift today and it doesn't look as bad in real life as it does in photos. Maybe its because you can turn it to a better position. Though it could have looked better in dozens of other poses.

I have been using my three Amiibo for Hyrule Warriors for a few weeks now, but I gave my Mario a spin in Smash Bros. for the first time last night. He's a purple costumed Mario named "Wally" for obvious reasons.

My first training session didn't go so well. I started simply trying to show him the ropes with my own Mario, covering combos, spot-dodging, and how I moved, but that just made him super-reliant on fireballs and he honestly wasn't fun to play with at all. I switched to a few other characters after and it felt like all of his tactics were completely useless. I ended up not saving any of the 35 levels I trained him up with, and called it a night.

The next morning, I gave him another go. This time, I started with my best character, then switched to Mario, and then, for about twenty levels, focused solely on kicking his ass with Wario. Around level 27 or so things really started to click with him and he was adapting really well to my tactics, not relying too much on fireballs, and doing some unconventional combos. I ended up saving this data because it feels like Wally is an interesting fighter now.

Yeah I bit on a $30 captain falcon amiibo. Considering how I got the ones I have so far with a giftcard that I would have likely forgotten about I don't feel too bad.

Naturally of course given that it's probably the rarest one I have my eyes on when I get it I'm going to name it after a certain moderator on this forum...

Again, you're talking about me but it's pretty easy to guess that as every Amiibo you and anyone else owns would be named after me unless someone is trying to be "imaginative" by calling it something like "Mr.NintendoPlasticToyCashGrab the 3rd" or other lame "personable" nicknames.

I would be willing to buy ONE Amiibo of your choice and name it after any forum poster who gets me a DL code for Duck Tales Remastered. That way I get DuckTales for free and allow a total stranger dictate what my next Amiibo purchase is instead of impulsively buying Kirby or one that I really want but not really.

There is an article on the site on how to do that.  The bad news is there there is no way to do that without at least cutting the box.  You can have it look in great condition though.

Which is honestly a shame because the packaging actually looks pretty nice.

Apparently, you can take a pointy skewer, put a tiny hole in the bottom (Where the cardboard and plastic don't seal well) and scrape off enough of the sticker to make it work.

But even if you do that, you've still got a used Amiibo on your hands. Even if it stays in the package and the package is mostly undamaged, it's not like you can then sell it to someone else brand new. It's got your data on it and has begun to take on it's own fighting characteristic. Or can you wipe their memory clean?

Pretty sure you can wipe figure memory, but scratching the sticker off would still make it obvious the Amiibo wasn't new if the package is opened later... so there is no way to get around selling as used if you actually do use the figure.

The dreaded internal Gamestop memo strikes again. Rumored Wave 3 release dates:

Bowser - Feb 6; Sheik, Shulk, Toon Link, Ike, King Dedede - Feb 13, Mega Man and Sonic - Feb 20.

My Shulk pre-order says Feb 1 but that could very well be a placeholder date. I do not look forward to going to a Gamestop on Feb 13 just to make sure I get Shulk.

ATTENTION AMIIBO ENTHUSIASTS:

Wave 3 is now in-stock in Japan, with Meta Knight and Lucario in particular readily available. Rosalina and Shulk have not been released yet, but will probably be coming in early to mid-February. If you are finding any of these difficult to obtain, please send me a message as soon as possible. I will send you a Japanese version if you are willing to reimburse the shipping fees. If you are looking for Marth or Wii Fit Trainer I can also obtain those. Unfortunately, Villager is difficult to fin here. If you are not concerned with the original packaging I can send more than one Amiibo loose in the same, smaller package, reducing shipping costs.

Okay, something inexcusable happened to my Australian friend today and I am very, VERY angry. I'm trying to convince them to take a picture or soemthing, but he're's the copypasta from our skype log.

"I went shopping to try and get either a Megaman, Rosalina or Shulk one that had just come out today.

Man shops didn't have one but I found a couple of Shulk and Megaman ones at a Big W there were I maybe two megaman ones 3 Shulk ones and one I didn't see.

Now before I reached the game section this guy ran past me from the entrance and headed left when the game section was to the right, I went to grab a Shulk one to look at it and before I grab it I get shoved out of the way and as I am falling I see it was this same guy from before.

I cut my arm on one of these stupid wire hook things Big W has to hold things like trading cards and other things with hooks on the package and this guy runs off with the fucking amiibos >= |"

I mean, nothing new as far as rampant consumerism goes, but this has gotten out of hand. Retailers need to crack down if crap like this is happening.

I wonder how much of Nintendo's recent profit was because of Amiibo and not their games. I figured Amiibo was a cash grab to infuse some money into the bank by squeezing the small customer base but I am wondering now if they are using it as a way to move away from video games and get back into toys.

Not always. Sometimes they do them way more quickly than anyone expected. Look at how they embraced digital distribution of retail games, it kind of came out of nowhere.

I wasn't surprised they did that to be honest, its what they always wanted. The have wanted to do away with used game sales since they tried suing Blockbuster over game rentals in the 80's. This is different we are suggesting they might be testing the waters to exit, or move away from, video games and shift to a brand new business model. That is not something they will do over night. UNLESS Amiibo is the reason for their quarterly profit and their games would have sunk them if not for amiibo, then I can see them maybe accelerating their exit but only if New 3DS bombs hard, like Virtual Boy bomb.

There was talk about Quality of Life being their exit strategy, I doubt Amiibo is tied into that at all but what if they are seriously testing the waters to scale back on video games and shift to something new entirely, toys is something they have done longer than video games, and to them they have always considered video games toys anyways.

Gold and Silver Mario amiibos (http://www.vg247.com/2015/02/04/super-mario-amiibo-gold-silver/) as Club Nintendo final prizes?

The smallest flat rate box, which could hold maybe four unpackaged Amiibo, would cost around 10-15 dollars.

I just found out that amiibos are not region locked so will take you up on that offer, let me talk to my sister and we'll come up with a list together and split shipping costs. I know that I want to get Marth, Wii Fit Trainer and Villager (if you can find one). She will probably want a Toon Link, Pit, and Meta Knight since she didn't pre-order any wave 3 figures.

Probably the best looking Amiibo so far. The detail is very nice and there's nice contrast of colors (his vest color pops more than anything). A few people have been saying their Monado's have a slight bend, but mine is perfectly straight.

I'm deathly afraid of opening it, but I probably will tonight.

Toad preorders are already sold out...

The Toad pre-orders are up at Best Buy, though.

I wish I could have gotten a Shulk, but I can't be greedy! I got an email that my orders for Metaknight, King Dedede, Ike, and Mega Man are in store on the 20th (Best Buy). I can get them when I pick up Kirby and the Rainbow Curse! :3

I can't order online from Best Buy though (living in PR), so my best bet is either Walmart or Gamestop. That being said, I lucked out with this Shulk and I'm tired of the insanity that is pre-ordering these things. I want to at least finish my mains (Robin and ZS Samus) but I won't lose sleep if don't get them.

Yeah, I liken the Amiibo hunt to Beanie Babies back in the day. Man, I was obsessed with those things! haha
However, this time I'm not making my mom drive around the city for 'em! I do the driving instead! Actually, I've just been pre-ordering the ones I want, and if I can't get others, then maybe I can import or just be glad I have the ones I have.

Got my Shulk amiibo today as well, though the box was a giant mess of being abused and beaten. Luckily, Shulk was fine. It looks a lot better then the Link Amiibo by far. Maybe is has something to do with there not being an ugly yellow bar.

Looking at Amazon/Ebay, Shulk is going for $30 and up.

Released ones I still hope to get (someday):
Marth, Wii Fit Trainer, Villager.

Hope to also get Charizard, Robin, and Lucina from wave 4.

Was looking at Toon Link and Bowser this weekend. Both looked good and would be fun collectibles. But I'm so pissed at the whole short stock issue that after thinking for a minute they both went back on the shelf. From the investor Q&A:

Quote
Finally, regarding your question about amiibo’s profitability, we have been selling amiibo at the same MSRP so that consumers will easily understand its price point. However, I think you can easily tell just by looking at several amiibo figures that production costs vary for each one of them; some amiibo have a more complex structure and a greater number of colors, which means they cost more to produce than others. Nevertheless, since setting different price points could be misinterpreted as the company valuing certain characters more than others, we came to the decision to set an MSRP that would return a profit from the amiibo platform as a whole.

I only got one in my area because my wife put it on pre-order.

My local target had bar codes for sonic, ike, king dedede.  When asked, they said they were supposed to get them a while ago, but never got their shipment.  They even scanned the label, and they came up as "discontinued" in their computer, leading them to believe they won't get any.

On the plus side, Ive seen some Shiek pop-up here and there, and I've seen more supply of toon link come into circulation.

Not sure if he'll be "Marth" level of hard to find, but I expect him and most of the 3rd party character ones will be pretty limited overall.  Scalpers are already selling them for $30+ on amazon.

I happened to be at my local Best Buy earlier today when the Nintendo Rep was there restocking the Nintendo section w/ Codename STEAM, etc. As it so happens, she put up 2 new Mega Man Amiibos. I'd been casually looking out for one of those (I'm not going out of my way to hunt Happy Meal toys without a good reason) since he's one of my all-time favorite VG characters, so I bought one. If I ever got into Amiibos, I meant to get a Link as well since he is my favorite VG character. So yeah...I have 2 of the damn things. Neither one has any useful functionality right now, but at least they look good on the shelf (in fact, Link in general is surprisingly well-detailed, and there are details on the Mega Man Amiibo I feel like only appeared in the 90s cartoon series). Keeping an eye out for Shulk and the Fire Emblem Amiibos, but I don't expect to see those anytime soon.

Fun, I was born & lived in Illinois most of my life.  Where you from?

Over the last week, I've seen Sonic a lot more regularly, less-so the Megaman amiibo.  Toon Link seems to be in better supply now, too.  That said, can't seem to find Ike or King Dedede anywhere. The West Coast strikes must have really screwed with their distribution.  Our local target has told us not to expect them to get any of the Ike or Dedede ones, at this point.

So there's a new DLC pack that requires a specific Toad Amiibo to unlock (the DLC does not come from the Amiibo, just the unlocking of said DLC).

Yeah, Ike and Dedede are impossible to find in stores, but Mega Man and Sonic are really easy to find. There was a whole row of blue with Sonic and Mega all lined up, all the way to the back of the shelf. Meanwhile, for the Super Mario series I am currently unable to find Toad, which is pretty much the only one I want of that series.

However Nintendo is managing and anticipating it's North American supply-demand chain, it continues to be woefully inadequate for their dedicated fans.

Everyone is sold out now. So my only chance at Lucina is

A) Scalpers
B) a restock that will last just as long as the pre-orders did.
C) If Evan_B still has that offer open and if Japan doesn't go to hell with it.

I want to say some really violent things, but I'm controlling myself. I'll get mild comfort in the thought that a restock will screw over some scalpers.

Due to the scarcity issue, I'm rapidly starting to think that Nintendo's DLC scam may be the worst in the industry. Say what you will about Capcom's on-disc DLC, but at least it's there to purchase at any time and usually gets discounted after a while. For all the comparisons to Skylanders, I've never had this kind of trouble getting a Skylander or Infinity Figure as Nintendo has with any Amiibo, nor is the content in those games locked behind 1 specific figure. If you want access to the parts of a Nintendo game they've locked behind the Amiibo paywall, you're looking at coughing up $50+ on Ebay. Just ridiculous.

I'm following the release dates, if you want a copy of any of them email me as close to launch as possible, because while the stock is healthy, it doesn't stay that way long.

Or...you know...just wait for the cards they've announced. Nobody is buying amiibo at those prices because of the content they unlock in the games.

I have no interest in buying glorified E-reader cards, especially at Nintendo's prices. Nintendo should just be selling this on-disc DLC digitally like every other company, if they insist upon no longer giving us the full game when we pay full price. Have the Amiibo for those who just want the figure, with the slight discount of the character already unlocking crap everyone else has to pay for.

My entire problem with Amiibo is that Nintendo's locking content behind the purchase of figures no one can buy because the Ebay scalpers clear out the new inventory for the rest of the year every time there's a new wave of the things. Either make the content available for purchase separately, or make the figures more available. But Nintendo prefers catering to their fanbase of Ebay scalpers.

The cards are Nintendo's solution for a non-amiibo alternative. Its a bad solution nobody wants (except maybe scalpers). But its the one they are going with.

Ultimately Nintendo is entirely to blame for this debacle, but it's not because of some bullshit claim of being sold "on-disc DLC" or fans being unable to access content. Nobody cared about the things Amiibo unlocked in games until now when it's a convenient excuse to pile on.

Nintendo has to do two things. Either slow things down and actually manufacture enough to figures to keep up with demand, or increase the size of their manufacturing capabilities. If Nintendo insists on releasing Amiibo waves so close to each other, they need to expand the manufacturing. Only having 2 Smash Bros. figures releasing in July (because of the Splatoon and Yarn Yoshi figures) makes it painfully obvious that there's no support going on. And that burns up goodwill with the fans way faster than claiming Nintendo is intentionally selling people on-disc DLC.

Let's be real, here. How much of an impact is the Amiibo craze going to have on the remaining life of the n3DS and Wii U? Is their profit margin enough to even things out for Nintendo? I know quite a few of them have sold but these are not 200 dollar consoles like the Wii. I'm honestly surprised they've even sold that much considering you need two insanely niche pieces of hardware to take advantage of them.

How many pieces of collectors items are there available of Shulk? Lucina? Robin? Ness? Of many of the newer waves? They either don't exist or are even rarer then the actual amiibo. The people who are fighting tooth and nail over the amiibo aren't buying them for their digital unlocks. It is because its a statue of Shulk/Ness/Pit/etc who has nothing else out there and fans want it. That is not to say there aren't people buying it for the digital unlocks, but they are in the minority.

And scalpers are buying them too for obvious reasons in massive orders. Funny thing about. After the Toys "R" Us servers crashed from the first wave of pre-orders, they then made the amiibo a "one-per customer" item.

Amiibos can probably keep Nintendo's cashflows up for a while, if they can keep them stock.  They don't necessarily need to keep the consoles afloat if they can maintain both revenues and social currency with Amiibo sales.  They can be effectively "worthless" outside from collectibility, but most retail buyers probably weren't planning on opening the packaging anyway.

Mario
Link
Samus
Peach
Toon Link
MP10 Yoshi

I'm aware of Marth/Wii Fit and Villager but are there another impossible to get. My son is getting into this Custom Amiibo sub-culture that will require me to indulge in dupes and trips of the more popular one but I think I do want a solid collection. Is it too late? I still think we will eventually get reprints. They would be crazy to not do it with how they are selling. My current theory has them re-releasing next year after they finish the Smash line.

A full collection will be a costly venture.

As these sorts of lines expand, old molds aren't readily cycled. My guess is Nintendo has a small amount of factory lines working on this merch and that does not bode well for reprints.

At this point, I think, if you have missed the boat on certain Amiibo, you won't be seeing them again.

Never too late, as long as you have deep pockets.
But if you are on a budget it's best to give up now. An Amiibo collection wouldn't be cheap at retail pricing, but when a significant number of characters sell for 4 or 5 times (or more) retail pricing your options will probably be limited.

Still disappointed I can't get a Villager Amiibo, or the whole set of Kirby-related figures.

I really think Nintendo's big win from a gaming standpoint with Amiibo is if they'd release a Skylanders-esque game using the Amiibo characters.  They're in a position where the characters are already in the wild, they'd just have to build the game to interact with it.

There was an article a while back saying Toys for Bob/Activision originally approached Nintendo to offer Skylanders as an exclusive.  To me, this seems like a win-win where they could potentially make a deal where Nintendo lets Toys for Bob develop the game using Nintendo characters with their input, and share in the profits.
For Nintendo characters that are gone/scarce, this is where something like the Amiibo cards could fill the gap & maintain a playability for this kind of game.

It just seems like such a missed opportunity in my mind.  I'd also love to play that game.

That implies there's enough kids who have Amiibo to play a game with them.

Also, a future where Nintendo makes a Skylanders-sequel game is not a world I want to live in.

I think the implication is more that Nintendo has interest in making a vehicle to sell more amiibo product.  I'm suggesting that there's already a baseline of people who have at least a few of these games that could possibly be interested in this type of game, myself included.

I'd also suggest that maybe your and other's grief with Skylanders is how they package the game than the game itself.  Additionally, my suggestion wasn't that Nintendo themselves make it, rather they leverage a business relationship with Activision/Toys for Bob to develop the game using the Nintendo licenses necessary, so it's not even like it would keep Nintendo from producing "core" games.

Grant you, given how much I like the idea, i'm sure it'll never happen, so you're probably safe from your worst-case scenario of a game you don't like existing.

Nintendo needs to address the critical situation the Amiibo bubble is currently experiencing. With every wave, the number of Amiibo actually being used for gameplay shrinks, and that only means the bubble is going to pop soon. Not only will Amiibo be worthless, but Nintendo will have burned out a viable long term financial source.

This is true, collecting amiibo is possible but money will be a concern. I bought an Ike amiibo just recently from amazon for $30 alone. It's about double the cost and this Ike shipped from Japan since they are hard to find here. If I didn't have the extra money laying around I would have not of bought Ike in the first place. Honestly i'm happy to have Ike but this just might be the only time I will order through a third party for an amiibo.

In regards to retail (unless your getting a regular amiibo,) it is such a mess at times that getting a rare amiibo like Rosalina or even Ness basically requires magic, tricks, or the lords blessing to even have a chance to get them. On the bright side if you were able to defy the laws of our dimension by getting a chance to hold and buy a rare amiibo from retail it's a lot cheaper than buying from a third party. But the cost of getting... all of the amiibo's might not be worth the cheddar.

It's really not worth it to collect them all in my honest opinion. Personally I just advise(unless you have the lucky charms gold mine and resources to find and collect amiibo), getting the ones you like and especially if you can get them normally, by normally I mean not paying two times or more for one.

Chris Kohler has made the points far more eloquently than I could.
http://www.wired.com/2015/04/amiibo-bubble/

- Sell them through their own website
- Sell them at a convenient and wide time frame as possible
- Strict one-per-customer limit, enforced thoroughly

That might seem silly when Amiibos are printing money trees out the wahoo right now, but the reality is that at the current pace you risk burnout, and the whole house of cards comes down. If Nintendo really care about Amiibo being a long term money maker, they need to take the hit now, before people stop caring and before scalpers end up with hundreds of figures worth squat.

1) Make as many amiibo as possible.
2) Fight the scalpers by being a constant public presence. Ensure fans their favorite figures will be available at MSRP, follow through and you drive the scalpers away.
Title: Re: Let's Talk Amiibo!

Thanks for linking (and providing handy bullet points!).

But I'm not sure if selling through their own website is enough.  I mean, the craze is real.  Nintendo couldn't keep Club Nintendo from crashing on the last day to register codes despite ample notice and about as wide a time frame as you could get.  (Admittedly, I was one of the people who procrastinated and contributed to that problem.)  I just have no faith that Nintendo could keep it's own site open.

Plus, Nintendo's only friends right now are retailers (maybe).  Boxing them out of this deal would probably put a bad taste in their mouths.  I don't think the retailer exclusives were a point of laziness on Nintendo's part, but rather an agreement to ensure shelf space.

Further, imposing the limit is easier said than done.  Apple does this with iPhones by scanning an ID.  That works with in-store transactions that they fully control.  Nintendo wouldn't have this luxury online and would instead have to rely on someone (or some expensive software) to go through transactions to make sure credit cards are being used more than once, billing addresses aren't being used more than once, shipping addresses aren't being used more than once, AND that none of those would produce a false positive (e.g., two people living in the same house ordering the same Amiibo).

Great points, in theory, but they just don't seem practical.

Third one seems the most asinine of the three suggestions Chris Kohler provided.  The other two are a bit more reasonable, and if they truly cared about fulfilling all open demand for existing amiibo, they could complete the following steps:

I have to think Nintendo's thought of their options, and decided to pursue their current course.  Either way, it'll be interesting to see how it pans out.

Many small toy companies do preorder services through various websites to gauge the amount of units they need to make and create a slight excess for retail. It's an easy, convenient, and profitable method.

That is what pre-orders are supposed to achieve. It used to be that way. You could submit pre-orders for Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask up to a week or so before launch and you were guaranteed to get the gold cart. Per-orders should not sell out months in advance as they are still making them in factories.

Quote
I would just like to express my disappointment with your handling of amiibo support, instead of taking preorders and making a supply to match, you have purposely created a shortage of characters and now games with features large amounts of players will never be able to access. Disney and activision have no problem assuring their customers get their toys to life figures.
There's no reason I should have had to wait in line for hours at gamestop yesterday, been the only customer in line and still have to walk away without the amiibo I wanted, you've known of the demand since wave one and still refuse to keep up with the demand for products. Why even make a product you have no desire to make sure people who want can get. You advertise compatible amiibo feature with games, yet don't produce enough for people to even use them in the compatibile software. I hope you see the error of you production currently and offer some sort of solution soon.

Thank you for writing. I apologize for the delay in our reply. I’m sorry to hear of your disappointment with the availability and distribution of amiibo, and would like you to know that we have documented and shared your concerns with the relevant departments here at Nintendo.Additionally, I’d like to convey that we are aware of the popularity of amiibo and continually aim to always have a regular supply of amiibo in the marketplace. As stated previously, certain sold-out amiibo may return to your local retailer at a later stage. We apologize for any inconvenience you are experiencing now, and thank you in advance for your continued patience in this matter.
Quote
If you guys are aware of the popularity of amiibo from past waves, why have you not stepped up production of the newer figures.  Especially seeing how you are promoting them with newer games such as Kirby and code name steam.
Short of Kirby, you can not purchase a single figure compatible with either game.   All of the fire emblem characters are unavailable , many of which aren't even released and are sold out already. Why promote using fire emblem characters in code name steam if the majority of players will never have the opportunity.  If your company is aware of the demand, it would only reason you are purposely failing to meet supply.

While this may not be the answer you were hoping for, all of the issues you're describing are retailer related. Nintendo has no input on when or how retailers sell our products, if or when new products are stocked, or when and how the retailer takes pre-orders. These decisions are made by retailers at the administration level. If you have concerns about these kinds of issues, we can only recommend contacting your retailer. It may interest you to learn that Nintendo doesn't ship products directly to retail locations. We take orders from distributors (who sell our products and products from other companies), and ship our products to their distribution centers. The distributors then take orders from retailers and ship these orders to the retailers' merchandise centers. Once there, the retailers make all decisions about how to best sell this merchandise. They divide this merchandise up into smaller units and send them to retailers based on sales data. Please also note that no amiibo have been discontinued at this time. We plan to have different amiibo available throughout the year, and characters which seem to disappear at one time will suddenly reappear in the future. This means that amiibo which are hard to find now will be back in stores.

"This means that amiibo which are hard to find now will be back in stores."

I'll believe it when I see it

I'll just repost this from another conversation. As someone who has looked into toy development and distribution in the past and danced the collector's dance with many toy companies, I have this to say:

Anyone who thinks Nintendo is manufacturing scarcity has no concept of toy manufacturing.

To put it plainly, Nintendo is a company that is branching off in several different directions right now and it would not be wise for them to obtain a huge amount of manufacturing lines for Amiibo. This is a costly and ridiculous measure because Nintendo hasn't proven Amiibo to work well as a concept yet- Skylanders and Infinity are huge brands with a game that acts as a hub exclusively, while Amiibo has the console itself act as a hub with no central title tying things together. Thus, until they find a proper use for Amiibo in a title, there is no reason to obtain a larger amount of manufacturing lines to create these things en masse. To say they are creating an issue of scarcity is ridiculous- they have no choice BUT to be scarce.

If anything, Nintendo should be selling Amiibo at a higher price- I know it sounds ridiculous, but it's true from a profit standpoint. The fact that they're expanding the line to different areas like yarn and cards is exciting, but it's not a good sign for their manufacturing plan which probably means these versions of Amiibo are going to be just as scarce. Nintendo is essentially approaching the toys to life concept as a video game company and not a toy company. That's not surprising, but it isn't a good thing, either. The video game industry and consumer base is known for wanting products immediately- it's why digital distribution is a popular thing and why reviews for games are devoured. With toy manufacturing, there is no way to create a big enough supply to meet demand for day one- it just doesn't happen unless you MAKE TOYS as a business. Even then, there's cost effective measures and quality control issues to consider.

If Nintendo wanted to jack the price up to $20 or maybe even $25, then I would be fine with that if it meant better stocked Amiibo. I would rather pay $20-$25 for a amiibo from Nintendo themselves, then $35-$80 from assholes on e-Bay.

I understand this is a new business venture, that to get the wheels rolling takes a while if it ever takes off at all. Mainly its the scalpers people are pissed off at. However, all we have from Nintendo officially is a Marth restock. Other figures at this point are unknown if they ever will restock. Nintendo commented on how successful Amiibo has been. They could do something for peoples' nerves by saying that they plan to restock whoever and so-and-so at some point and time. But as Jon Lindemann said

"Why would Nintendo make more of them? This artificial scarcity increases the frenzy and ensures that future Amiibo will sell out in hours "just in case they're gone forever". These things are pieces of plastic. They aren't rare. Nintendo could make as many as they wanted, but that would defeat the purpose."

So people think they are going after one time exclusives. So we have an already abnormal frenzy mixed with scalpers who know these things sell. And Nintendo likes it that way because money.

Here's the thing, though- nothing is exclusive for long. A recent trend in action figure collection is the concept of third party toys- better sculpts with the same or better functionality than pre-existing products. If Nintendo plays the exclusive card for too long, they will screw themselves over when people create better and more functional Amiibos to fill the void.

I don't understand this comment.

How can third party toys fill the Amiibo void?  Are you suggesting that there will be similar products popping up and people will stop caring about Amiibo?  I don't think that's valid because:
(a) for many people the allure is that these are rare Nintendo figures that haven't been available previously, such as Villager or the Fire Emblem characters; you can't simply replace a Nintendo-exclusive character with someone else and have the same demand.
(b) why would Nintendo allow third parties make figures that unlock content in their games? Maybe there will be a grey market that just makes it happen, allowing us to access content like the Captain Toad stuff that otherwise is blocked off.

You need both parts - the figure, and the digital unlock - to have an Amiibo replacement, and it's not clear to me that third parties will be allowed to provide either.

The figure is just an image. Anyone can make a "Not-Mario" and sell it as that. Once Nintendo stops supporting certain games, the NFC hardware will be exploitable and new things can be added it.
Title: Re: Let's Talk Amiibo!

You would still need to make the NFC chip that works with Nintendo's games or make your own compatible games (which would make a different product).

Also, I don't think Nintendo benefits from scarcity as much as everyone else thinks they do.  You buying from a scalper doesn't net Nintendo anymore money.  And selling out their inventory faster isn't a real financial benefit.  The only thing Nintendo gets out of it is that Amiibo would then retain a certain amount of cultural currency, meaning that interest will keep up until they can keep the stocks up.

Increasing the price seems like a good idea though.

Ok, so it sounds like you are talking about gray market stuff instead of licensed third party content.

I'm not against it happening, but unless the quality really is notably better then it's not appealing to me as a collector.  It also seems unlikely to me that Nintendo would just look the other way if "Not-Mario" Amiibo knock-offs are sold in any notable quantity. But who knows!

Reseller goes to a store and spends $13 on a Dedede.  Nintendo (and the rest of the distribution chain) makes $13.  Reseller sells the figure on eBay for $50.  Reseller makes $37.

However, your entertainment budget isn't infinite.  $50 on Dedede means $37 dollars less you have to spend on the Kirby amiibo you've been eying, but aren't quite sure you want.  Instead of possibly spending $50 on Nintendo stuff., you only spent $13 - as far as what Nintendo sees.

No, bad unclebob, nobody said we were allowed to be logical while talking about amiibo. Get back in your corner and think about what you've done.

Pardon the bump of the thread, but for any Canadians looking for a Dedede, you can currently preorder it on http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/electronics/nintendo-amiibo-king-dedede/045496891961-item.html (http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/electronics/nintendo-amiibo-king-dedede/045496891961-item.html)

Not sure how long it has been up... Good luck!

Thanks for sharing this.

Dedede is one of the characters I wanted but disappeared before I bought in, making this restock very tempting. Looked at it long and hard, but am turned off by Amiibo hard enough that I passed on principle. (If Villager or Shulk get restocked that stance might change though. Principles only carry you so far...)

But but you'll need a Dedede to go with your restocked Meta Knight you're bound to find in store at Best Buy this week - and easily complete the Kirby trio!

Nah, completely get what you mean. I have not been as strong and ended up buying a couple amiibo. I'll just keep it at a few figures and wait for more restocks. I don't need them bad enough to pay inflated prices.

Ooh... is MetaKnight getting a restock too?   That actually makes it much more appealing, if I had any confidence in getting both.

Yeah, I posted elsewhere...  There's several of the hard-to-find amiibo getting a restock on the 29th along with the larger wave of new figures.

Anyone want to try and help each other out by snagging extras to trade?

I'm hoping to get any of the FE characters (minus Ike who I have) plus Dedede and Meta Knight for my sister.

I'll be hitting all of the major retailers with the help of family.

Primary goal for me is Robin, Lucina, Marth (*crosses fingers*), Charizard, & Jigglypuff. I also plan to get a Splatoon 3-pack, Meta, Dedede, Silver Mario, Wario, and Greninja.

Not all are for me. Some are for my wife and sister.

My guess is, any of them you want to trade are the ones everyone's going to have a hard time getting.

Nigh-Impossible:
Robin
Lucina

Maybe:
Marth
Meta Knight
Dedede
Silver Mario

If you're early:
Greninja
Jigglypuff

Wait for a sale:
Splatoon
Charizard
Wario

I thought I'd use my lunch break today to pick up Lucina and the Splatoon 3-Pack. I got there before 8:00am and there was already a line of 20 to 25 people. That was hilarious. I turned around and drove back to work. Hopefully, my friend can come through in the clutch and get me a Lucina.

So I was just able to walk in to my local Gamestop and grab the Splatoon 3-pack without a pre-order. I was surprised, the store was empty and there were a good 6-7 sets of the 3-pack and tons of individual boy/girl amiibo. Were the Splatoon amiibo not on pre-order?

Lucked into an Inkling Boy & Girl Amiibo at my local GS. Surprisingly, the Boy was WAY more popular, as I got the last one and the still had 4 non-preorder Girls. Weird, since the Boy's design is way less interesting than the Girl's.

What a day!

First, my prof switched the test from yesterday to today, so no class skipping. Thats fine, I can at least hit Target...but my alarm did not go off and I overslept.

Thats okay! My folks were on the hunt for my sister and so they swung by and scooped up all of the non-rare (read: non-Fire Emblem) figures at Target. They also hit up TRU and snag Greninja, and strike out at Besy Buy. Had to guide parents on purchases during lecture, which was rather funny.

I start trolling around online when I get to work and miss everything there...Lucina sold out in less than 10 seconds as I never saw it go up during the window. I then read on reddit that there are Meta Knights in the next town over so I "took lunch" and hopped over to grab the last two on the shelf.

I found a cheap Pit on Amazon (23.50) and bit on that for my sis since parents were paying for that one for her. I also managed to grab a Robin on a different site after missing AGAIN on the Amazon window. I ended up passing on the Splatoon 3-pack because I was burned out of buying them once that window opened up on Amazon.

Tally: 1 Silver Mario, 2 Meta Knight, 1 Robin, 2 Jigglypuff, 1 Pit, 1 Charizard, 1 Wario.

Now to wait for the Wave 5 preorders...

Is anyone hurting for Silver Mario?  I'm seeing a ton of them locally - probably more than my small town will demand unless scalpers get in to the mix... which they inevitably will, if there is easy profit to be had.

I'd be willing to buy and ship at cost if any forum members were sore about missing out. Just remember I'm located in Canada which is a double-edged sword: exchange rate is hugely in favor of US dollar, but shipping is a bitch.

I scored a Palutena. The page crashed almost immediately at 5:00pm EST so I was refreshing for 10 minutes (not the entire time).

I'd like Zero Suit Samus and Ryu, maybe Roy. That may be it as far as Super Smash Bros. goes unless Wii Fit Trainer becomes available again or Daisy is one of the upcoming DLC characters. I definitely want that modern colors 8-bit Mario Amiibo just because I think it looks cool.

What is wrong with me? I feel ridiculous. I'm buying them mainly for decoration. I haven't used my Lucina Amiibo yet.

Saw a Marth figure in stores locally over the weekend (along with a whole bunch of Villager figures).

Picked up the Amiibo, looked at it, then put it back. Great to see one in the wild, but it's not worth the chase of trying to get other Fire Emblem figures to have the "set". Additionally, there really isn't enough in-game functionality to make them worth owning as anything more than a trophy. I've already got Shulk, Mega Man, and Villager (plus a couple that my children wanted) at home - my Amiibo hunt is done.

I think the massive Yarn Yoshi looks adorable. Even the smaller yarn figures look great. But I have more than enough junk at home already, and that $40 will be much happier staying in my wallet.

Good haul today. All I really wanted was Zero Suit Samus, but GameStop also had the Splatoon Three Pack and classic color 8-bit Mario so I got those. I also got a single Inkling Girl, but when I got back to work, I couldn't justify keeping it when I already had the three pack (was going to open the single and keep the three pack sealed) so I returned it. I still want the modern color 8-Bit Mario, but who knows how difficult it will be to get a hold of it when it releases not bundled with the console?

I have Chibi Robo Zip Lash reserved and the only Super Smash Bros. Amiibo I definitely want are Roy, Ryu, and Wii Fit Trainer. It'd be nice to get Shulk, but that's not happening. I'd consider ROB except I don't want the three pack with Duck Hunt and Mr. Game and Watch.

No line at my local target. While heading there I passed a Gamestop at 7:45AM with 4 guys in lawn chairs and my mother, of all people. She was waiting to get an Olimar for my sister and thought they would open early @8 like some previous occasions.

I walked into Target at 8AM, asked the associate and she came back with one of each so I bought the Olimar to save my mom another 2 hours in a line. Kinda funny there were folks waiting at Gamestop and not at the Target down the road. Mom said they were there all night. They sure wasted the last 12 hours of their life.

So after I get my retro bundle pre-order in two weeks I just need Robin, Lucina, and WFT from past waves, and Mewtwo, Falco, and Roy from future waves.

The end is in sight...until next year.

HOWEVER, I did snag my first Animal Crossing Amiibo cards. Is there already a dedicated thread for AC Amiibo Cards or shall I start one up in the Handheld forum?

Right now, the Modern Colors 8-bit Mario is only available in a console bundle exclusive to Walmart, but the Amiibo itself won't be exclusive to the bundle and should get an individual release at some point as far as I know. I bought the Classic Colors 8-bit Mario just in case the Modern Colors one became stupidly hard to come by when it finally releases.

I was tempted to buy the retro 3-pack, but I don't really want Mr. Game and Watch or Duck Hunt. ROB just looks cool so I wanted that one.

I actually really want all three in the Retro Amiibo pack, but I'm trying to convince myself to get OFF collecting these things.

ROB is my Smash Bros main and I'm quite enamored by Game and Watch's switching poses. Duck Hunt is cool just because it's that freaking dog.

You know what would have really made these things a bang for your buck, though? If they had the classic NES game unlocked for Virtual Console when you bought them. And like, they unlocked it for every system that has an NFC reader. When you think about it, that's essentially stopping people from buying the same game three times on the eShop (since they're five bucks and an Amiibo is 15) but it would be a nice gesture for fans of these characters. Also, digital games cost nothing, and given most of the Smash cast has an NES title associated with them, the emulation cost would be offset by the Amiibo profit.

Sure. But why would Nintendo do that though, given that they can (and already do) make money from VC and Amiibo sales separately?

And also, Amiibo Tap.

Blathers, Resetti, Celeste, and Kicks.

Totally want the Resetti one, though I had hoped it would be of him bursting out of the ground angry.

AKA the most pointless app ever.

Isn't it? It's like the Masterpieces of Brawl. Play a classic game for 2 minutes and that's it. I guess it's a little better in that it tries to show you some of the highlights of the game by giving you different sections you can tap into but it is just a marketing demo tool to make you buy the game like Masterpieces was.

I finally gave it a chance since I've got all these Animal Crossing Amiibo cards. I did 4 taps and got Super Metroid, Metroid, Super Mario World and Zelda 2. I could have unlocked all the games but that's a pretty winning list and I just didn't see the point in going on and unlocking them all. Still, I got to fight Kraid in Super Metroid, fough and beat Kraid in Metroid for the first time and beat levels 1-2, 1-1 and unlocked the yellow blocks before getting the boot in Super Mario World.

They did have Chibi Robo.

I've been pretty vocally against Amiibo figures because they aren't good value and aren't well used in games.
We have 8 sitting on our shelf - although only 5 that I care about and the rest due to kids.

Saw the Animal Crossing figures today in a local store. Rather liked the Tom Nook figure and almost bought it. Also like KK Slider - but not enough to buy a three-pack of figures just to get it.

Still wish there was a better reason to own outside of just collecting.

I have Mario, Link, Samus, Zero Suit, Bowser, Shulk, Wooly World Yoshi, Lucina, and Charizard, with a mint Bowser Jr. from Japan I'm giving away through my podcast.

And I wouldn't be surprised if you could find the Retro Three and Olimar in the wild. There are reports of Gamestops with plenty still available and I have seen Olimar in stores as well.

I know stock is still uneven and there are some hard to find figures, but it really feels like Nintendo has upped their Amiibo game this holiday season and is providing much better availability.

Why say this?  I gave them crap when distribution was bad, it's only fair to compliment when things improve in (I think) a significant way.

Some might argue "too little too late", but since the actual in-game support is so weak I think it's fine. These are mostly for collectors as far as I can tell.

I have decided that I want to finally start collecting some of these Amiibo. I already have Bowser, Link, Mario, Luigo, Toad, and Yoshi, but I think I want to expand beyond just Mario and Zelda characters. I was hesitant at first but they are starting to grow on me. I don't care what they do in-game as my Wii U pretty much sits in a box now not likely to get some playtime in the near future. I just want to get a few more of the figures. I also started collecting those World of Nintendo things and that has sparked my interest in Amiibo further as well.

It's actually a great time to get started. Supply is plentiful and there are a lot of sales because of this and the Animal Crossing price crash. True story: I witnessed a miracle today. I went to pick up my Ryu and Roy preorders (at 8pm my time), and there was half of an endcap full of Roy. It was the first time I ever saw a Fire Emblem amiibo on a shelf in any quantity. I think the craze may be dying down.

Animal Crossing Amiibo are (purely as decoration) awesome. Shame I haven't seen a good use in-game though.  Apparently they aren't selling that well either because there have been lots of deals and discounts for that set - at least more than I've seen for others.

Right now www.BestBuy.ca has the Cyrus/K.K./Reese 3-pack on sale for $22.50 CAD.  I'm not a big fan of the Alpacas, but K.K. is great and for the full set seems like a very fair price.

I don't think the craze is dying down as much as Nintendo has found out how to keep them healthily supplied. I've seen a ton of Lucas amiibos at my Gamestop. Unfortunately, the waves that had the biggest supply problems aren't restocked yet. (Lucina, Ike, Palutena, etc).

I did buy Lucina through a scalper (dick). Found a Fox one as well which I was lucky to get. And picked up Roy. I'll start collecting the rest of the damn things I want when the Cloud amiibo comes out.

I'll say it again. Beat the Bomb (https://www.beatthebomb.com.au/) is awesome. Australian site with great prices and very reasonable shipping. They have a ton of the hard to find amiibo. I got my Robin and Lucina through them.

If you don't care about being a "North American New In Box Collector" and live in the USA this is a no-brainer. Thanks to conversion rates you get them including shipping for less than MSRP.

I just checked and all 5 Fire Emblem amiibo are currently in stock there, along with nearly every other Smash amiibo ever released. They are all priced below US MSRP when you convert to USD with the most expensive being $11.72. Shipping is cheaper when you bundle.

What's the best way to get the Roy amiibo? GameStop is no longer an option for me unfortunately. If anyone want to help a brother out I'd be happy.

I want alt Bowser Jrs.  A beautiful 7-pack.

I'd buy that.
Ah crap, I think I'd buy that too!

Every time I go to Best Buy, they have a whole shelf full of Marth.

I'll say it again. Beat the Bomb (https://www.beatthebomb.com.au/) is awesome. Australian site with great prices and very reasonable shipping. They have a ton of the hard to find amiibo. I got my Robin and Lucina through them.

I've had bad luck with importing items that I've just given up on it. I'll give these guys a try later for Ike and maybe Robin/Marth and see how it goes though.

You shouldn't need to import Marth, just go to Best Buy. Unless you don't have those stores nearby, then I guess you might...

Has the Marth situation improved? I know they did a restock, but he was still hard to find/expensive.

I have a Best Buy, but it is just really out of the way.

I've been into Best Buy a few times over the past several months, and each time they have had a shelf full of Marth. It seems to be plentiful now, at least in my area.

They also have had at least a half shelf of Dark Pit also, if anyone still cares about that one.
Title: Re: Let's Talk Amiibo!
Post by: Stratos on March 22, 2016, 05:50:40 PM
Yeah, Marth is quite plentiful now.

Ike also got a nice restock a while back but not as much as Marth.

Robin and Lucina are out in the cold along with Dedede as never having gotten much of a restock in the States. I don't think we will be seeing Smash Dedede returning since we have the new Kirby line releasing.

Animal Crossing amiibo are getting crazy discounts which makes for tempting impulse purchases.

Not seeing any news of Cloud, Bayonetta, or Corrin Amiibo yet.

On the other hand, I just pre-ordered all the Kirby Amiibo at Best Buy, along with Isabelle (Summer Outfit) and some Seris 4 Amiibo Card packs. Just when I thought my addiction as over...

By the way, I'm being irresponsible and building up a collection of extra Amiibo again. I'm actually thinking of doing another Summer of Amiibo giveaway on the site.

It's a bit of a hassle, but I'm sure you'll be able to import it for something close to the regular price of an amiibo.

Just a heads up that Disney Infinity got cancelled. Retailers are dumping stock with steep discounts. Now is the time to pick them up if you wanted a few Marvel, Star Wars, or Disney figures to go with your amiibo.

I had just picked up a 3.0 starter set last month. I'll probably grab some Marvel figures and other personal favorites. Pity as I felt they were the strongest of all the current Toys-to-life platforms.
Title: Re: Let's Talk Amiibo!

Speaking of Disney Infinity, what figures do you think are the best? I'm not sure, I've been wholly focused on Amiibo, but if I just pick up random Disney Infinity figures that won't make much sense...
Title: Re: Let's Talk Amiibo!
Post by: Stratos on May 15, 2016, 12:53:23 PM
In terms of look/build quality?

I only recently picked up the 3.0 starter so I just have Anakin and his padawan Ahsoka. Both look great with no defects. If you are a fan of the Clone Wars show it really stays true to their look in the show. Most of the Marvel ones look nice as well (though Iron Man seems a bit bland in coloring).

The Pixar figures look like they were meant to be made into figures and the characters based off of live action human characters look natural as well.

I mostly want them for nostalgic reasons to go on my nostalgia shelf. I only started playing the game last night. Looks like it will be a mix of Minecraft/sandbox style play for the toy box with themed levels that play similar to the recent LEGO titles.

They do have levels for racing and for a fighting game but I have not tried those yet.

Ok so I don't know if this is something I can talk over here but since its related to Amiibo, I guess I can so pardon me if its not appropriate for this to be expressed here.

So I want to know over here like......is there any differences between Amiibo and DLC? Like I don't see why people are complaining about locked amiibo content here seeing as how a lot of them is optional and that it doesn't hinder the overall experience.

I myself am not forced to get one and I don't feel like getting one either simply because...well, its optional and no one's forcing you to get them.

And yet, people rant about them like they are needed for the overall experience. I can understand them not getting the supplies but then again, Nintendo didn't even know that they would print so much money.....

The main difference (as I see it) between Amiibo and standard DLC is availability. Tying content to Amiibo means that portion of the game isn't generally available unless the required Amiibo can be easily found and purchased.  With DLC, presumably anyone who owns the game can download it.  So it creates scarcity without good reason - often exacerbated by the way Nintendo handled Amiibo stock and rarity early on.

At this point I don't care very much though.  Which seems to be the state of Amiibo in general?
Title: Re: Let's Talk Amiibo!

The content amiibo unlock is way less important than the actual figures themselves.

Agreed, but do note that the wolf link unlock in BotW is one of the first 'substantial' unlocks in a 1st party game. That and Shovel Knight are the only two amiibo unlocks I would consider essential.

The Shovel Knight co-op gameplay is really good and worth the price of (Amiibo MSRP) admission if you have a local friend.
Hopefully that Amiibo isn't too hard to find?  I don't honestly have any idea about scarcity but would worry that a third party figure wouldn't see as much support as first-party ones.

The Zelda functionality looks very cool... but I'd have to rebuy and also play through Twilight Princess again to get the unlock?  Going to take a reluctant pass on that.
Title: Re: Let's Talk Amiibo!

Wolf Link amiibo is available solo in other countries and we can probably expect the same thing to happen here later this Summer or even next year when the game releases. You can always find a country with a good exchange rate w/ US and import. I did that for hard to find Robin and Lucina and ended up paying less than US MSRP including shipping (thanks Australia!)

Considering that we still haven't seen the 99% of the game, I think that Wolf's link is just optional and its more of a "if you find things too hard" situations.

Still, I find that mentality that amiibo's are bad because of this locked content lame because they are just figures and that addition is something you can only use if you have specific games which not everyone is going to get.

107 Released.

Nintendo of America tweeted celebrating 100 with the release of the new Splatoon amiibo...

https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/751449519200542720

But they didn't include Gold Mega Man, Shovel Knight, the four Skylanders/amiibo, or the Shadow Mewtwo card.

2 Mario 30th
16 Animal Crossing
1 Chibi Robo
4 Kirby
1 Shovel Knight
4 Skylanders
8 Splatoon
8 Super Mario
56 Smash
1 Zelda
4 Yoshi
1 Mega Man
1 Pokken Card
403 Animal Crossing cards
2 Japanese Promos
1 Error Card

And I wasn't going to get the dioramas... but man, they look so sweet.  Picked up the pair on Amazon for about $35, so figured why not? :D

I'm very late to the amiibo party, but I joined this past weekend with my first two packs of Animal Crossing cards. I was actually winding down on this game, but potentially being able to bring back my favorite villagers, or try out new ones, makes me want to reengage. I'm a big fan of the surly villagers, particularly Vladimir and Rasher. "Do you have something to say to me? Is it swine?" are probably my favorite lines of dialogue in a video game ever.

Robin, Samus, Pit, Mega Man, Sonic, Link, Ness, and Gold Mario also look like they'll be hitting store shelves soon. A lot of those seem to be ones that have gotten harder to find (or were hard to find in the first place) in North America, so it's nice to see Nintendo getting them back out there.

I've been desperate for Ness.  Might also get Robin and Pit.  Maybe (probably not) Gold Mario if it's available outside Wal*Mart.

Only a matter of when rather than if, of course, but the Bayonetta amiibo got teased on Platinum's official blog (http://www.platinumgames.com/official-blog/article/9081). Also, the four Zelda amiibo and the new wave of Animal Crossing cards that got announced in the last Direct went up for pre-order on Amazon.ca earlier today for Canadians. The Ocarina of Time Link and Wind Waker Link and Zelda have become unavailable since then, but I'd imagine they'll be back up soon.

There are still some people (mostly North American - not sure where you are from) here with doubles willing to trade if you start collecting.  There is a dedicated thread about it in the Matchmaking sub-forum:  http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=48297

Some of the harder to find amiibo that were supposed to be getting restocks are up on Amazon.ca now, including Lucina, Robin, Pit, and Lucario. The first three have also been showing up at Toys R Us locations in some parts of the country if you prefer getting them in store.

I feel kind of bad about Amiibo. There were a bunch of rare-ish Amiibo figures that I was interested in... but that time has passed and now I simply don't care if they get restocked or not.

Of course it helps that very few have any meaningful use, and that I've got enough Animal Crossing figures already sitting on my shelf.

What's Waluigi?

I know it sounds like a Mario character, but there's a full group of six amiibo hitting this week (DK, Diddy, trollop, Wario, Best Princess and Boo). Ain't never heard of this last one.

I believe they will, because there has yet to be an amiibo that has not come over here. We will probably see them in the Spring, possibly with the Switch launch if Double Cross turns out to be on Switch (hoping that is the case!).

Seems likely. Monster Hunter XX (Gen U) is releasing in March, and they could very easily make it a dual release with cross saves between the 3DS and Switch versions like they did with MH3U on 3DS and Wii U.

Someone help me. I'm starting to fall victim to the allure of Amiibo. And not even the useful Amiibo that are used a lot such as Mario or Link. I seem to want the limited use ones.

Now, I know I can't claim complete avoidance of Amiibo up to this point. I've fully dived into the Animal Crossing Amiibo Card section of this insidious consumerism. And then I got all the actual Animal Crossing Amiibo figures once they started getting discounted since I was in a real love affair with Animal Crossing. (Although they keep getting their price slashed further and further making me wish I had waited for more than just 50% off.) At the same time, I remember after buying the last few figures and complete the AC set, this tinge of regret like I had just wasted a bunch of money. It was a weird love/hate reaction of liking the figures and characters but feeling they were quite pointless.

Aside from the AC Amiibo, there was only one other Amiibo I owned and that is the Chibi-Robo Amiibo but it was sold with Zip Lash and the only way to buy that game at first was with the Amiibo included. Yet I was ok with that since I've got a soft spot for Chibi-Robo ever since his first GC game earned him a lot of gaming goodwill from me.

That Amiibo situation changed this weekend. I went a-travelling to various EBGame stores (aka Canadian Gamestop) because I found out a couple days ago that they were doing another buy 2 used games get 1 free deal and I took advantage of that to score some good deals on games in March and found a lot of worthwhile deals from it. My hope was that maybe I could score a cheaper copy of Kirby Planet Robobot but the amount of used games available in stores was very sparse. Not like in March where I picked up a huge selection of titles. Maybe the New 2DS caused people to pick up more 3DS titles than trade them in.

However, during this journey, the Amiibo selection was next to the shelves so I was noting what was around these days. I kept seeing the latest Pikmin Amiibo on shelves and I did like the look if it with all the Pikmin cloistered around the broken cinder block. Came to one store and they had the BOTW Guardian Amiibo in stock. So, I thought, what the heck. I'll buy it and the Pikmin Amiibo. I think the Guardian Amiibo is supposed to be hard to find.

Well, now I'm suddenly interested in Amiibo. I mean, I was already highly tempted by the upcoming Metroid Amiibo so I'm definitely going to try and buy that now. As well, the upcoming BOTW Champion 4-pack does interest me more than most of the other BOTW Amiibo (besides the Guardian Amiibo and Zelda herself) although I wish they had gone with the Champion descendants like Prince Sidon and Riju and... the other two. At least you spend time and talk to them more in the game while the old Champion's are relegated to flashbacks and people talking about them.

In any case, it seems Nintendo has stepped up their Amiibo game since the newer unrelated-to-Smash stuff has started interesting me more. I started looking up all the Amiibo that have been released so far and trying to find pricing as to what might be cheaply acquired and what is still expensive/rare. I didn't see many deals from online suppliers however. The AC Line can definitely be bought on the cheap but after that it's all a grey murky area. I always thought the whole Amiibo line would crash at some point and then I might be able to swoop in and buy them all on the cheap like what is happening to the AC line but so far that hasn't really happened. There are a few things that can be found slightly discounted. I guess the Waluigi and Daisy Amiibo's aren't selling since Toys R Us has them 30% off. EBGames has the Mii Fighter 3 pack down to $12.00. I've seen the Famicom ROB, Star Fox, Falco and Zero Suit Samus down $3-4 from regular price. Otherwise, most Amiibo seem to be holding steady.

My travels brought me across and Alm/Celia Amiibo 2 pack so I bought that since Fire Emblem Amiibo always seem to be rare and are probably the third most used kinds of Amiibo after the Mario and Zelda brands. I also picked up a Meta Knight Amiibo from the Kirby line since he also seems to be more popular. I also saw a bunch of Bayonetta, Cloud and Corrin Player 1 Amiibos out but I have no affinity towards those characters nor have I even bought their Smash DLC yet. Did think about getting the Corrin though because of the rare and FE used more often reason but didn't feel like going completely wild with Amiibo yet.

That said, on eBay, I saw one person selling a lot of 70 Amiibo consisting of mainly the Smash and Mario line with a lot of the harder to find ones included like Marth, Wii Fit Trainer, Palutena, Meta Knight, King Dedede and such. That would cost about $900 yet if you consider the average Amiibo is $15.00 in Canada, it works out to about cost. So, sure I could catch right up on the whole Amiibo craze but do I really want to spend over $1000 for these trinkets. Because that's what it's going to be to collect them all and there's a good chance I'll start trying to do that if I begin acquiring a bunch of these and I still have my doubts as to how useful these things will ever be.

Anyways, there's some Amiibo talk for you and this thread.

I'm thinking about picking up a few more Amiibo... but it's a hard sell for anything but my favorite characters because they are essentially just shelf decorations. I had low expectations for Nintendo ever doing anything useful, and they've skillfully undershot those targets.

But yes, the Pikmin and Metroid ones look great. Definitely ones I'll keep an eye open for.

I'm also keen to finish off my Animal Crossing set (maybe... I've got the characters I care about, so if it doesn't happen I won't really care) and replace my "pee stick" Link with a better version. 8-Bit Link jumps to mind if I see one at retail price anywhere, or maybe the gorgeous Wind Waker set of Link+Zelda. Stumbling across those sculpts seems unlikely unless a reprint happen though...

I have more Amiibo than I know what to do with. I don't know how it's come to this. I've reached a point in which I actually end up feeling whatever the opposite of buyer's remorse is when I don't buy an Amiibo I see in stores only for the price to skyrocket because it becomes difficult to find. I had my chance to get Callie and Marie, but I thought I could get them cheaper online. Did I really want the Callie and Marie Amiibo, or did I want them because they were new and cool looking?

I recommend stepping out of the Amiibo hunting game if at all possible. They're nice decorations. Recently, I looked at my collection and wondered why I have so many of these things yet I'll be there when the Samus/Metroid two-pack launches because I'm an a-hole.

Well, that's because the logistics of Amiibo put Nintendo in a weird bind. How many Amiibo did they have to release for Smash Bros.? 60? Something like that. So, they release those characters in stages. But then some of those characters get game entries released in the franchise later on. So, Nintendo adds Amiibo Functionality for them to give people a bit more bang for their buck. However, if those characters are sold out and hard to find, does Nintendo release more of that character every time a game comes out? How much supply do they need to meet the demand because, at some point, some gamers are inevitably going to be left out unless they flood the market which Nintendo won't do.

Instead, the thinking seems to be to almost replace the Smash Bros. Amiibo with new lines or new iterations for new games released. Sure, they might include some special abilities for the Smash characters compared to the new ones but how long can they keep supporting or adding special features in for figures that they aren't going to reprint or can not be found by the public anymore blocking them out of game content? Moreoever, I don't think Amiibo are backwards compatible. Maybe I'm wrong but if you but the Kirby line of Amiibo, will they work the same as the Smash characters in Kirby Rainbow Curse Wii U? Regardless, it is not like Alm or Celica will do anything in Fates or Project S.T.E.A.M or am I wrong?

Thus, there are all kinds of issues about how to make use of Amiibo with regards to game functionality and, in the end, most Amiibo are almost game specific with a few rare and lucky ones getting a bit more functionality than most.

On another note, I think the other reason Amiibo have been as popular as they are is the packaging. In one used game store, they had some Amiibo for sale but they didn't look that great or impressive clustered together on their own. But in the packaging with the big plastic bubble around them, they look cooler and more interesting. More special. Or maybe that's just me.

I had successfully climbed out of the Amiibo hole, then I came across the Breath of the Wild Amiibo, felt compelled to get a few.

Now I see a few stores near me have the original Cloud Amiibo....a figurine for one game that I only play when friends are visiting, but nostalgia is pushing hard for it.

I've gotten to a point where if I just avoid the game aisles in a store, I can move on with my day.  Better just get back into that discipline.

I've purchased quite a few amiibo now, and I feel as though I really need to slow down.  I've decided not to buy the Zelda Champion amiibo, but if I see a Majora's Mask Link or Skyward Sword Link at a reasonable price, I'll probably jump to complete my set.  I also think I have a preorder for the Metroid amiibo somewhere, but those are favorites, so I can kinda make the excuse.  It's easy for me to avoid the new FE amiibo, since I  don't have and might not get the game.  But I did get Cloud P1 and Bayonetta P1 for the novelty.  I also go the new Inkling amiibo because I dunno.  I wasn't going to get the squid, but I might now.  Who knows?

I do feel the remorse for not getting some of them.  There were weeks when Marth amiibo were just hanging on the shelves of my local Target, and then one day they were gone and selling on eBay for pretty big markups.  I thought they'd get marked down, but they just sold out.  It's a total crap shoot as to which amiibo are going to be rarities down the line.

It's kind of hard to stop once you get started.  I dunno if Nintendo planned on making the buying of amiibo this addictive, but if they did, their plan worked.

I'm burned out on amiibo. I'm waiting until the Zelda Champion amiibo release and I'm buying a pack of the RFID Zelda cards floating around to get the extra goodies in the game. I might even sell off some of the figures I'm less attached too. I'll still buy ones I really like, but I'm done fighting to get them. I'll check online and if they are available at a reasonable price I'll pick them up.

Nintendo's crappy supply issues for all of their products has done me in. No NES Mini, not going to fight for an SNES either, and amiibo need to be my favorite figures.

Don't.

Get an N2Elite.  If you're going to support piracy, at least be smart about it.  For the prices those sets of bootleg cards go for, you could get the N2Elite and have access to every amiibo ever.

Thanks for the tip, I might bite on this. The cool thing I liked about the bootleg cards was that they have mini versions which I could pack in the case instead of dragging out my figures to scan for outfits daily. But this would get me everything in one go.

Thanks for the P2 Corrin tip. I figured Amazon would have a restock at some point so I've been checking here and there. Was able to snag a copy. You're a true forum hero! All I see are adds for Corrin P2 at $60.00 or higher. Those scalpers.... In this way, I continue to keep all my Amiibo bought at cost or lower having bought a bunch on sale.

My Amiibo collection has grown quite a bit since my last post. I picked up Waluigi and Daisy from the Mario line. I picked up King Dedede and Waddle Dee from the Kirby line. I've grabbed Ryu, Falco, Fox, and Lucas of the Smash line. They were all 50% off so I figured I'd grab them. Ryu was the only character I didn't care about but the rest were all figures I'd want. I've also picked up Cloud 1, Cloud 2 and Corrin 1 from the smash line at cost. I was also in Target yesterday and I did buy the Archer Link. If Zelda had been there, I'd have definitely taken her. Of the BotW line, Zelda and the Guardian are the ones I like the most. The upcoming Champion pack is also pretty great. Archer Link I was on the fence about. And Rider Link and Bokoblin I'm not too concerned about if I get or not. I don't care much for the look of them. I guess playing BotW has made me care a lot more about the Zelda amiibo since I was ambivalent about her when that line was released.

And now Corrin 2 is added to the collection. There are a few more cheap Amiibo I could add to the collection. The 3-Mii pack is $15.00 retail. The Retro 3-Pack is $25 retail. I'm going to meet up with someone tomorrow for the Robin, Little Mac, Zero Suit Samus, Classic Mario and Inkling Girl Amiibo. The Amiibo are all $12.50 each with Inkling Girl thrown in for free. I want the Robin and ZSS and am ok with the Classic Mario at the price. Little Mac I'm taking because he's cheap enough. I don't care about the Inkling Girl or any of the Splatoon Amiibo but free is free.

I'd like to find a Kirby and complete the Kirby line. I've got my eye on a bunch of the other Amiibo in the Mario series which are either on sale, below cost or at cost. There's pretty much all the upcoming Amiibo I'm interested in. Metroid line, Koopa Troopa and Goomba for Mario, Champion pack, Fire Emblem line of Chrom and Tiki. If I do acquire those then I might go back and start grabbing some of the others in the Smash series I'd like and see if I can score some in the Zelda 30th Anniversary series though that latter series seems to be the scalpers current bread and butter of Amiibo.

Not that I need the competition but if you were interested in acquiring various Amiibo then this might be a good time to buy. It seems fatigue may be setting in for other buyers who are now parting with their collection and stores are cutting prices on the older stuff not moving. Now you can get your Amiibo without spending a lot of scratch.
Title: Re: Let's Talk Amiibo!

But I didn't even get to the part I was going to mention. Now that I've been purchasing a bunch of these Amiibo, I often seen people advertising cards/hacks to get various Amiibo benefits without buying the actual Amiibo like you've been talking about in this thread. I was actually think of buying some of those cards so that I don't have to open the Amiibo package and just tape them to the bottom of the package and use the Amiibo that way. Ha ha ha! If Nintendo does release a Qbby Amiibo here then he truly would be a box-boy with that idea. But maybe I'll check out UncleBob's suggestion.

Samus+Metroid 2-pack of Amiibo now live on Amazon.ca.

$40 for the set seems steep, but these are two of the nicer Amiibo I've seen and if they sell like the Breath of the Wild ones it might be better to buy early if interested.

Urgh! My Amazon shipment arrived today. I opened the package to find the item smooshed into the box so that the cardboard back is bent in order to keep it in its place despite the fact the box is plenty big enough to not require that and the plastic is crushed up / bent up in a top edge. While wondering if I should contemplate complaining about it, I suddenly realize that this is the regular Corrin and not Corrin Player 2. Wondering if there was any stock left for them to send me a replacement, I checked in on Amazon and reviewed my order. However, Corrin Player 2 is now being sold by other parties which are not Amazon and it seems I somehow stupidly ordered Corrin 1 despite owning it already. I don't know how I made that mistake! I was sure I had gone to the right page. I knew what I was looking for and yet my order history says Corrin 1 was selected. So, that's a nice bit of nothing I got to pay for. Might as well do a return on it and recoup a bit of the cost but there goes my high I've been feeling since getting an SNES Classic on preorder. I contemplated ordering a second Corrin Player 2 after ordering what I thought was my first one just in case it might be useful in a trade down the road but decided against it since it was US dollars and there was shipping and duty taxes for it crossing the border. Now I'm regretting a bit that I didn't. *angrily shakes fist in the air* AAAAMMMMIIIBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

One Cloud Amiibo sitting at my local game store still...still trying to resist temptation of buying it.  I'm not normally one to buy figurines based solely on appearance, but that one has ties to a pretty Seminal game for me as a teenager.  Justifying not buying it right now because I know the only thing I'd use it for would be Smash, and even then, i didn't use the Amiibo functionality that much.

Did people see the new Shovel Knight 3-pack of Amiibo figures?  They look pretty cool, and I enjoyed Shovel Knight well enough to consider them.

Unfortunately, the unlocked features don't sound nearly as appealing as what the main Shovel Knight Amiibo figure offered - that two player mode was executed really well, and totally justified the cost of the figure at the time. (Although maybe it's unlocked for everyone now? I don't really keep track of these things...)

What do y'all think?

The co-op is now part of the full game w/o amiibo.

I agree, these are cool, and its nice to see non-Nintendo/indie companies getting support like this, but I'm on amiibo overload. Just don't have the shelf space for many more. Really makes me wish they had cheaper RFID card alternatives. I'd buy the cards just to have access to the bonus content, as I can stick those in a book or game case, but the figures are getting to be a bit much for me. I might even sell/donate my less loved figures because of limited space.

Nintendo is really getting good at the look of Amiibo figures these days. I've never played the Shovel Knight games yet I like the look of these characters enough that I'd consider buying the pack for them. I'm clearly in Amiibo's horrible costly grip. Somebody save me!

I really liked Shovel Knight and the Spectre Knight expansion.  I never made it through the Plague Knight campaign though.  That said, I'm not sure if I liked them enough to buy three more amiibo. But they're so pretty. .  .

I remember buying the Splatoon 3-pack on clearance for a third of the original price, and even though I did scan them into the game for the bonuses, I ended up feeling like they weren't worth the money. But I'm still glad I bought them, because now I know for sure that I don't like to buy amiibo. I haven't bought any since, though there is one I wouldn't mind having: the 8-bit Link. The main reason is that it would go nicely next to the 8-bit Mario that a friend gave to me. But I think I missed my chance on it, I don't think they produced very many of them.

I think if I add any more amiibo to my collection, it would be from ones included with a game. Ones like the Yarn Yoshi and the Chibi-Robo amiibo felt like bonuses, so I like those.
