Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Review
« on: January 13, 2011, 06:54:24 PM »

This game would be more aptly titled Tom Clancy's Crappy Wii-Exclusive Rail Shooter.

Unlike the delayed Ghost Recon Future Solder game that is due out for HD systems, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon on Wii, developed by Punch-Out!! developer Next Level Games, is nothing more than a rail shooter, and outside of some Time Crisis tendencies, there is nothing special about it. As a matter of fact, it's not a very good game.

The story is mostly unintelligible. It seems to be an amalgam of Tom Clancy stories, and all I could discern from the presentation and cut scenes is that it follows two bro-tastic soldiers who appear to be at war with the Russians. The presentation is bad all around, as the graphics are flat and lifeless. The sound is serviceable, though it's annoying to hear one bro tell the other bro that he's reloading.

From the third-person perspective, the on-screen character travels through different cover spots. You hold a button down to remain in cover, and when you let go, you step out of cover, exposing yourself to enemy fire. You can fire while in cover, but your accuracy is poor. Aiming is controlled with the Wii pointer as in other shooters.

There's nothing functionally bad about the gameplay; it's just bland and not fun. The settings are boring, and the gunplay isn't rewarding. There are a few vehicle sections that change it up, but they don't actually feel any different than the regular gameplay. Co-op is provided, as is a score-based arcade mode that has online leaderboards. There are unlockable characters, such as Splinter Cell's Sam Fisher, but they don't do anything except change your avatar.

The combination of the lackluster settings and tedious gameplay makes for a disappointing game. Straight up, Ghost Recon is just a pitiful rail shooter, and with the amount of other good rail shooters on Wii, there is no reason to even think about getting this game.

I feel that the brevity of this review reflects the quality of the game. When this is all that can be said about it, it really must be bad.

Considering that I have seen zero advertisements about the game, or really any kind of mentions, I guess Ubisoft didn't care about the game.
