Nintendo Gaming / Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
« on: January 09, 2023, 02:16:03 PM »
I went through topics from 2022 and 2021 and didn't see anything so I'm putting this up.

I'm happy to discuss all aspects of the game but what I really want to talk about though is potential flying! Be it through a Loftwing type of mount or any other means. Preferably a Loftwing mount for my tastes. The first thought that comes to mind is that it would just break the game but if designed with the whole game in mind I think it could be balanced pretty well.

1 - Glider - It's back and it's undoubtedly going to be used as heavily as it always was. Just looking at that one portion of the trailer with Link gliding into absolute nothingness with sky islands way the heck out I just can't imagine the Glider being the means of transportation between the sky islands. If there is a Loftwing maybe it gets you through the larger gaps but the Glider is then used for more narrow areas and precision landings.

2 - Underground - If we have a ton of caves, cities and other locales underground I'm certain this is where no Loftwing would be allowed. If the underground is as extensive as even 1/4 of top ground Hyrule is that's a ton of area to explore that keeps the Glider and other traversal tools relevant that outright flight wouldn't completely omit.

3 - Dungeons - Epona don't get to go in dungeons neither does Loftwing. Same pricipal as the underground.

4 - Sky - If the Loftwing is limited to the "heavenly" part of the sky maybe there are certain natural or unnatural barriers that keep you from just flying to any portion right off the bat. Those weird antenna may produce force fields, super powerful monsters early game Link isn't ready for yet, thunder clouds, etc. At some point though I would love to feel the freedom of flight again like Skyward Sword but in a much more meaningful world. Let the Loftwing land with me on the ground. Let me feed it and pet it like I do my horse.

5 - Hyrule Surface - Depending on how much has changed I wonder how much the development team wants us to climb the same land masses like we once did? New traversal tools like the Hook/Claw Shot would change things up to let the old feel new again and who knows what other new powers will be introduced. Maybe the story logic says Loftwings can't go down to the surface again but man I'd love if by the end of the game we could totally fly around the surface and the sky at will. Especially if it means epic boss battles taking place across the sky during flight and having to free fall at times and what ever the devil else they cook up.

Oh and that big, rock bird, floating in the sky last trailer? That's a bad omen...

Nintendo Gaming / My Video Game Collection/Museum
« on: July 16, 2022, 02:21:44 PM »
Ahoy my friends. I would like to share with you my little gaming collection/museum. Everything is themed and organized around certain games that I loved the most, plus what ever I managed to dig out of my mothers garage. Smash Bros, Donkey Kong, Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Sonic.

I've managed to become a home owner in the last year and finally had enough space to display certain things in ways that I've always dreamed of! I've owned many of these statues since they were released day one but never displayed them. Some of them are older than my 10 year old daughter and only now do I have the means to display them in a way that I thought satisfies my vision.

Special thanks to my(as BlackNMild would put it) "fine a$$ wife" who put up with these boxes cluttering our closets and bed rooms for years in our tiny little apartment.

Still a work in progress, trying to tastefully fill in certain empty spots on the walls but you can see what I'm going for.

Charles Martinet signed this photo for me! "Matthew you da best! Wahoo!"

Nintendo Gaming / It's a Shell On Yoshi's Back!
« on: April 22, 2019, 03:07:07 PM »
Years and years ago during the days of the Gamecube many of us debated endlessly with ferocious conviction about what resided on Yoshi's back. Now while it was all completely trivial I return the debate to you over a decade and a half later with proof!

Of course just a few years ago Miyamoto went on record about Yoshi's origins intending it to be a type of Koopa in the original Super Mario Bros but I forget if he mentioned the saddle/shell at all.

Quote
Whether you’re already throwing eggs in #YoshisCraftedWorld on #NintendoSwitch, or thinking of Flutter Jumping into the crafty fun, catch up with a refresher on Yoshi’s nearly 30 years of starring roles!

By the way…did you know that the “saddle” on Yoshi’s back is a shell?

Nintendo Gaming / No Sound Coming From TV When Switch Is Docked
« on: August 28, 2017, 04:52:36 PM »
So Thursday I turn on my Switch to play Sonic Mania and there was no sound coming from the TV. I turn the machine off and on again and just like that it was fixed.

Friday my daughter plays Zelda for a few hours and everything was fine. Saturday I turn on the Switch and no sound again. When I remove it from the dock the sound is working just fine. My TV isn't muted as I can watch and hear the tv just fine and when I press menu I can hear it's sounds over the Switch's visuals. I've tried different HDMI ports, plugging in head phones and I can hear the music through the head phones while the Switch is docked but when I unplug them nothing. My Switch cables seem to be just fine and other devices give sound out of the tv through the same HDMI ports.

Support.Nintendo doesn't have any answers and when I called them up it sounded like a new issue to the customer service guy. I've seen this issue on Reddit, Gamefaqs and Youtube and no one seems to have an answer. One guy on Reddit just had his magically start working again much like me when it first happened 2 days ago but now it's persistent and won't fix itself. Nintendo asked me to send in the Switch itself and the dock and ugh I just don't feel like it right now. Anyone else deal with this bull ship? Oh I hope it's just some glitch that can be patched out.

- -

Sunday I turn on the machine and throughout the whole day the sound works just fine.

Today I turn it on this morning and no sound. I turn off the machine, turn it back on and its fine.

I just don't know!

Nintendo Gaming / Star Fox: Zero Interest On This Forum
« on: March 29, 2016, 08:36:34 PM »

Actually I don't know that for sure but I couldn't find a Star Fox Zero topic all its own.

I'm not good at those big fancy first posts and I'm not going to even try. Actually scratch that, I bet I could make a killer one but aint no body got time for that. Instead here are my impressions from Wondercon this passed weekend.

So I got to play Star Fox Zero on Sunday. As you read my impressions keep in mind I am a HUGE Star Fox fan but I hated Command, hated Adventures, and boy did I hate Assault. I didn't even enjoy Assaults first stage or multiplayer which all reviews seemed to rave about. Didn't fool me at all.

1) Motion Control.
The Nintendo Rep told me I can recenter the reticle at anytime with Y or pressing on the left stick. During the rail segments I found that I didn't need to use the motion too much and mostly played it like classing Star Fox. One thing I realized after playing is that almost every preview and trailer makes the game look particularly boring because no one is trying to dodge anything. Has anyone else noticed this? I watched others play as well and realized they are so focused on trying to aim with the motion they can barely focus on moving the ship. When I played the game, I made it look as fun and as frantic as you remember Star Fox 64 to be. I was juking out enemies, constantly barrel rolling and whipping around trying not to get lit up. Occasionally I would fly away from the enemies to grab items while targeting towards the enemies to hit 2 birds with 1 stone, then I would snap the targeting reticle back into place for the classic feel.

During the boss segments is when the motion and first person view become more mandatory. Gameplay wise I didn't buy into it until I actually played it. I was using the Land Master which felt as great as you remember and with the screen zoomed out, I could keep an eye on the dangerous environment and drive around the giant sand worm while still shooting its weak points. I noticed I didn't have to totally wait for its idle phase if I was good enough. Hovering over his giant swinging body, boosting out of the quick sand or barrel rolling away from it's giant claw grab was very fun. It did take a while to get used to though, because I was using the first person view to steer which threw me off way too many times. If I were a little more coordinated I could imagine it would have felt very satisfying. Once I actually did get the hang of it the monster killed me.

The Nintendo Rep told me you can turn the motion off. What he meant by that is you can assign motion to a shoulder button, then when you hold down that button the gyro is activated. I didn't try this method but I think it would be ideal in some cases if you are accidentally using motion when you don't want to.

The Gyro works well, as well as Splatoon, but it is going to take some getting used to thats for sure.

2)All Range Cinematic View.
When this was first shown and up until Sunday I just thought why? It's supposed to be cinematic but to me it just made things look slower and boring, not only that what gameplay purpose did it really serve? I realized that being able to watch the dangerous environments like quick sand or the electro shield while targeting the enemies without having to fave it head on is actually pretty cool gameplay wise. It's a little tough going from the different view points but I can see why it works and it really does add something new to the old SNES/64 formula.

Then I watched someone fight Pigma and he played somewhat like me, actually barrel rolling and trying to out maneuver enemies. Looping around, making sharp turns and u-turning did actually look pretty cinematic when I got to see a full fight from someone who played a little more like Star Fox should be played. Plus with that view point I could see Peppy and the other guys in the back ground blasting away at enemies waaaaaaaaaay off in the distance, so far in fact I wondered if Fox could actually go there himself in real time gameplay. I'm pretty sure you can. With the dynamic view points it really did make things look like it was all on such a grand scale.

3)Voice Acting.

I know people like to give Star Fox 64's acting a hard time but that acting was genuine, when I listen to those lines being delivered it maybe B-movie quality but it sounds downright believable. Star Fox 64 3D was a mess. It was as if the directors pushed the actors to make the lines way too over the top and cheesy as if that was one of the high lights of the original 64. This game doesn't do that however. It's still a B-movie but it once again sounds genuine and while a few lines I feel are off given certain situations, for the most part in the 3 stages I got to see everything sounded just like I would like it to.

4) Visuals.

I love it. The game being rendered in 60fps twice didn't allow this game to be as pretty as it possibly could but I think it looks just great! The mountains, the oceans and the machines look really nice. The characters inside their ships as well as their profiles all look really well done to me. The environments are much more open and varied than 64 thats for sure and the draw distance is pretty huge. Low health shows physical damage all over the arwing, you can see your lasers splash the water from really far away and I'm sure a ton of other little nice details that aren't coming to mind. After my first session with the game I came away absolutely convinced that this is the Star Fox that we've been waiting for since Star Fox 64. Everything about it feels natural and in line with what I expect from Str Fox. Nothing I played feels forced. We'll see about that though, I didn't get to play the Gyro Copter.

I don't want to over hype it but I went from cautiously optimistic to completely sold in a day.
Too bad about no VS multiplayer though.

Ahoy all! There is a contest to be an extra in the next planet of the apes movie. I don't particularly like doing extra work when I should be doing stunts or booking a bigger role but I thought this would be too cool to pass up.

Please watch and hopefully enjoy! If you do like it give me a thumbs up!

Guys take a look at this. I don't know if this is real or not but it scares and excites the crap out of me.

When I was a teenager I told myself before I die, real life super heroes(as we know them in comic books) will become reality.

Oh wait. My happy child like imagination has gotten the best of me again. Apparently this is 2 years old and there are several videos that debunk this. Oh well. I still have my dreams I guess.

General Chat / Kids Write Notes To Parents
« on: January 15, 2014, 04:15:57 PM »
Here are some letters from honest little kids. It's funny cause they don't have many boundaries. They just write what they think.

http://distractify.com/fun/fails/the-30-funniest-notes-from-kids-struggling-to-express-their-emotions/

Some examples:

"Thank you sooooo much for being my mom. If I had a different mom I would punch her in the face and go find you. Love Brooke"

"I hope you get a lot of presents and Happy Merry Christams and you are fat." Complete with a fat drawing of daddy.

"Thank you mom for making me food so I don't die."

School Paper says: "This is my mother." Child draws a picture of mom.
School Paper says: "This is what she does all day." Child writes "watches Ellen."

Kids are the best and the worst. Anything funny from your personal experiences?

General Chat / Aliens Walk Among Us Say's Canadian Official
« on: January 10, 2014, 09:02:33 PM »
Has anyone seen this yet? It came on Russian TV a few days ago. I'm one of the types who believe there is intelligent life far away from our planet so naturally I'm intrigued. But it's a retired Canadian minister or defense who is talking about it so of course it all seems more credible.

Just thought i'd share.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2535698/Aliens-walk-theyre-refusing-share-technology-change-warring-polluting-ways-claims-former-Canadian-defense-minister.html

Most aliens come from other star systems, although there are some living on Venus, Mars and Saturn’s moon

There have been four species of aliens visiting our planet for thousands of yearsThere are between two and twelve total species of aliens (although some place the number closer to 80).

Some look just like humans, while others appear more like the creatures portrayed in popular cultureMost alien species have benevolent intentions toward humanity, although a handful have ulterior motives

One alien species, known as the 'Tall Whites' is working with the U.S. Air Force in Nevada and has been known to pass for humans in publicThe 'federation' of alien species has vowed not to intervene in human affairs unless they are invited to

The federation is disappointed in the way humans have treated the planet

Aliens technology is far more advanced, but have given us LED lights, microchips and Kevlar vests

I'd really like to hear everyone's thoughts on this. If nothing else we can laugh at each other's beliefs!

Nintendo Gaming / Upgrading SD cards for 3DS
« on: October 11, 2013, 02:08:59 AM »
Every time I try to do anything requiring tech I constantly mess it up. I need so much help it's not even funny. I followed these steps and I just have no idea where I go wrong.

For your new SD Card:

1. Go to SDCard.org and download and install the SD Card Formatter there. (Accept the terms and conditions on the bottom page to begin download.)
2. Insert your new SD Card into the SD Card slot. Run the SDCard Formatter.
3. Click on the Options and select "Full Format"
4. After your new SD Card has been formatted, remove the new SD card, power down your 3DS, remove the old SD card from in and insert it into your computer.
5. Cut and paste the entire contents of your SD card on to an empty folder on your hard drive.
6. Swap out to the newer SD card and paste the contents of the folder to the root directory of your SD card.
7. Insert this new SD card into your 3DS and power on.

The only thing I don't get really is the "root directory" but I can't imagine when I past the info into the SD card im doing it wrong.

I put the new data in and my 3DS doesn't have anything on it. The machine recognizes the card and does something to it, but it does't see the content with all my games and downloads. I need help please.

Nintendo Gaming / Game Pad Screen Scratches
« on: October 01, 2013, 01:55:26 AM »
Because I'm an idiot father who leaves his Game Pad and DS lying around for his toddler to destroy I've noticed I've got little nicks in all my screens.

Should I just call Nintendo and send in the devices to get refurbished? Can they even do that?  And what can I do in the future to keep the screen protected from little devils when I'm not using it?

General Chat / When You Feel Good Or Did Good, Tell Us About It
« on: July 23, 2013, 03:14:42 AM »

So there was a bit of doom and gloom from many of us in a recent thread and when others gave kind words to help each other out I figured we should make some sort of thread for accomplishments or goals. The kind of accomplishments that give you just a little more piece of mind and happiness. What happened to me today isn't really an accomplishment but it made me so happy I have to share it. Hopefully this will get the ball rolling.

Today I was given one of the greatest compliments ever. A professional Wushu athlete from the Hebei Wushu team decides to visit my school today and stays to watch my teaching. He saw pictures of my old school on the Internet with all its extravagant architecture, huge carpets and amazing stunt equipment. Mind you that was all lost around July 5th 2011. He was pretty shocked to see the empty room I was teaching in with so few students was the same school(by name and instructors) that he saw online. I gave him our story and he decides to stick around and watch class.

I tell everyone, lets show him our basics, and he gives an applause after the first half hour or so. He tells me my instructions are very clear, he told the students they were learning the right way by focusing on Long Fist first and not 3 or 4 different highly advanced traditional styles all at once, he then say's I teach as if I came from the 1980's! And to top it all off he said "you could teach in China. If you could speak Chinese."

It just made me so happy I almost cried. Though I kept it together until the car ride home. It's not that my own teacher hasn't said all these things before but hearing it from another professional outsider just made me feel so justified today. Constantly people come to my class and see a non-Chinese guy and just assume what I do is half baked before even trying the class. When I don't teach people Jet Li's old routine day one they assume I'm holding them back. So when someone in the know compliments me like that I just couldn't help but feel so much weight lifted from me, as if what ever is bothering me now wushu wise will soon be a distant memory.

He told me he loved my energy and said I was better than some Chinese teachers. All his teacher did apparently was "smoke cigarettes, reading news papers all day, telling us to run faster and jump higher."

If there was some way to have a realistic online wushu course for NWR I'd do it. BlackNMIld is the only witness to my teaching, he'd vouch for me!

So yeah, if some good rolled your way send it down to this thread. Lets make each other just a little happier.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Stealing "Their" Games!
« on: May 20, 2013, 12:55:36 PM »
This is the thread discussing future melt downs and watching everyone go Kong **** bananas.

As far as I can tell, Nintendo is more serious about 3rd party exclusive content and collaborations then it has ever been. I mean it seems like they must at this point to avoid super droughts that are happening even now. Not to make light of past collaborations but spotting the bill for a game like Bayonetta 2 is just something I'm very happy to see Nintendo do and I am fully expecting more.

The list so far is:

1 - Bayonetta 2
2 - Sonic Lost World

Both of these games(yes even Sonic) caused a ship storm. They got people talking about the Wii U and more negatively than ever hahaha. Enough of these will undoubtedly sway some of that negative opinion and I'm pretty sure more of these exclusive deals are in the works, but which ones? What is the next game that Nintendo is going to "steal" that is going to crash boards, start petitions and just make everyone go Kong Ship Bananas?

Also feel free to post your favorite melt downs!

Nintendo Gaming / Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Help
« on: March 27, 2013, 05:01:30 PM »
Ok, I have a hard time understanding a few things so please bare with me.

When I go to my personal hut there is the option to store and remove items. Does remove items basically deleate them? I seriously can't tell with all these windows and unclear instruction.

How do I go about crafting armor from the big monsters I beat, take them all to the old weapon smith?

The fat fishing lady talks to me about boating but where do I go once I accept her missions.

When I play online do I keep items I collect there?

That guys has been a ghost around here. Last active October 27th never to be heard from again. Seems like once we learned about the Wii U price and date he just vanished.

I suppose with his mission complete, there was no further reason to go on and he lowered himself in a pit of lava leaving behind only a smoldering thumbs up.

Maybe when he returns to right the wrongs of his posts he will be a good guy!

What NWR member would you like to meet in person and why?

Me, Iansane. I'd like to see how he goes about daily life and I wonder if he sounds like this extremely popular radio host we have here in Los Angeles. John Colbelt rants about everything and the moment I listened in I had a feeling it was really Ian on the other end. I really want to see what makes him ticked in real life and how he reacts to things.

EasyCure and Perm seem like regular people, but I'd like to meet em anyway, lol.

Nintendo Gaming / The Legend of Zelda U and Mii
« on: January 23, 2013, 10:14:59 AM »
So aside from that tech demo which doesn't count for much we have new info on the far off Zelda U title.

Paraphrazed from Nintendo Direct.

1 - the team is thinking of new design philosophies.

2 - A mention of playing alone will be changed. 4 Swords? Tingle Tuner? It's U and Mii playing together! Sigh

3 - They are trying to design a world where you don't beat dungeons in a specific order? Yes!

4 - A non-linear structure is being attempted. According to Aonuma, they are getting back to basics. Something they couldn't do with Skyward Sword.

All of these things sound like this game is starting on the right foot. I said it way back in the GameCube days, but Nintendo is going to be pushing multiplayer Zelda in its main line titles. This is going to be great and I can not wait! I don't care if its 2 human characters or Link with some creature partner with different abilities, this will be a welcome feature as long as the game is completely built with it in mind. My dream co-op setup would be Link on the Wiimote and partner on the Upad.

Nintendo Gaming / Star Fox's 20th Anniversary!!!
« on: January 21, 2013, 08:44:56 PM »
I know we've all discussed forgotten Nintendo franchises to death but I want to do it again with all aspects of the Wii U in mind.

I figure we can turn this into a giant fixer upper thread where the topic changes every month or so.

Star Fox - Amazing
Star Fox 64 - Fantastic
Star Fox Adventures - Not a true Star Fox
Star Fox Assault - Lame
Star Fox Command - Fanfiction with difficult controls, not good.
Star Fox 64 3D - same as above minus online.

We know Miyamoto wants to see Star Fox on the Wii U more than any other franchise. In a Nintendo Power from way back Miyamoto said his top 3 games were Super Mario World, A Link to the Past and Star Fox 64. He says if we want a new Star Fox we should buy the remake for the 3DS, but why in the world has it come to that? Simply because during the days of the GameCube, Nintendo's internal development teams had no idea how to carry on the franchise after the fantastic Star Fox 64 and let other teams use the IP.

Looking past Adventures, I feel Namco's team really turned the series to crap. The controls were crappy, the voice acting was terrible, the story was horrendous, very few on rails segments, constant switching of vehicles in missions with wonky mechanics and much slower gameplay compared to the previous title. So With all these shortcomings of course the game under sold and Nintendo acts like they don't know why.

Since the time of the N64, technology has improved by leaps and bounds so a brand new Star Fox with brand new ideas can be realized. Now what can the Wii U offer?

Local and online co-op could be a major feature. Locally if someone has the Upad to themselves while another has the tv would be great. Things like a Tank on the ground and Arwing on the air with vastly different controls and view points would be a blast! Something like Metroid Blast from Nintendo land could go a long way in a fully fleshed out game. Stages with a nice balance of free roaming and on rails would be ideal for people who prefer missions and objectives and those who love the arcade experience. I imagine some stages would have both. Rails - Open - Rails - Open, all in a single stage and depending on progress there could be different paths to follow.

A versus mode with 10+ people flying around blowing everything up would be a blast as well. With today's shooters there are so many modes there is no reason why many of them couldn't be applied to Arwing and Land Master gameplay. Capture and defend the base, team dog fight with support from the ground and vice versa, etc.

These are just on the surface ideas, I'm sure there are plenty of things that can be worked in I'm not thinking about. Any ideas? I just want to talk about Star Fox.

General Chat / Help Each Other Stay Healthy
« on: January 21, 2013, 12:41:46 AM »
The health advice thread.

So for years I have suffered chronic injuries in my glutes and hamstrings. Since this past October I discovered trigger point therapy which has done more for me than 2 years of acupuncture and a crappy chiropractor combined.

So in these last few months I have been training again, almost full force, I lost a lot of right leg flexibility and splits but that can be gained back. Still though i'm not 100% and despite eating pretty well I had a feeling my healing was being held back by my diet.

When I actually sat down for all of 3 seconds and googled foods that cause inflammation man it blew my mind! I mean I know what food is generally good, but never thought about bad food that would counteract my good. White rice, artificial sugar, food additives(like everyone's favorite red dye #9), high protein diets with meats that are broiled or fried(something about the charred proteins that are damaged), overly processed cereal(which means all of them but the nastiest/healthiest), and too much alcohol.

So by now you've probably stopped reading, but if you're still here I think we should have this thread just to discuss things like this from time to time. Not that any of us are doctors or anything, but just having a place to stop and ask things that concern you is always nice. Even if we all say "go see a doctor" regardless.

Though at the same time I don't trust every doctor I go to anymore. Through my connections with the places that i've been, I found out some things and that made it clear why I wasn't recovering as fast as I thought I should have been. I don't want this to be a diet thread either. Maybe someone knows a killer exercise that helps tendinitis in the wrists? Or maybe someone wants to get more flexible for some reason? I don't know anything!

And i'm married to a Chinese lady, so we have all kinds of Ancient Chinese secrets! ;) Let's help each other stay healthy! If not that, then at least healthier!
