Nintendo Gaming / RE: What type of games should the Rev launch with?
« on: April 08, 2005, 05:30:42 AM »
Bill Aurion:  I agree with you that Metroid Prime 3 isn't high on my list, but I know it has been hugely popular, and it is Nintendo's best "mature" product.

I personally wouldn't mind Luigi's Mansion 2.  It wasn't a bad game, it just was rushed and not fully actualized.  a new version of the game could be very cool...specially with Gryos.

Looking around the Mansion would be a totally new experience.  Pressing buttons could activate the flashlight, shoot water, fire and such.  It could be a great game.

Luigi's Mansion was great.  If it had focused on more complicated puzzles it would have been brilliant.

How about a Pikmin 3 (Online) for a relatively new Nintendo experience on the Revolution.  Imagine Designing the game where you raise Pikmin to fight.  You can even mix color Pikmin to create different colors with new abilities.  (For example.  Send Red Pikmin into the blue base and they gain the ability to swim.  Send Blue Pikmin into Red bases and they gain ability to fight better.)  Spending time management on creating stronger Pikmin is important, but also managing the battle.  Could be fun.

Nintendo doesn't need to have an original mature game.  I think what Nintendo needs at launch is simple.  2-3 BIG name Nintendo franchises.

The 3 games I would expect for Nintendo to have a launch would be:

Mario (An absolute must)
Super Smash Brothers Melee  (Show a fighting game can be done on the system, and Smash Brothers with the Gyros would be amazing.)
Metroid Prime 3.  (If Retro got started on a Metroid game right after finishing Prime 2, then it is completely possible for this game to be available during the launch window of the system.)

Another Launch game that could be awesome would be the return of Pilot Wings.

Anyway, if Nintendo launched with that lineup, and was also supported by 3rd party support.  Then Nintendo will have a great launch.

Here is something to think about.  If Nintendo is really making something revolutionary then some 3rd parties may already know about it, and may have signed on to create a unique game or two.  (Just like they have done with the DS.)

Yes.  But forcefeed back Gyroscopes could be much more expensive than normal Gyroscopes.  I don't think forcefeed back is important in a game.  So far its only been used as a cheesy means to show being hit.  It doesn't immerse you anymore than anything else.

I personally think they should just take that out, specially with Gyroscopes.  Let us gamers only have to worry about how t move the controller without worrying about forcefeed back to fight.

When Nintendo stated they haven't decided completely yet on a controller.  I think that means they have the concept down, they just haven't decided on the look, and/or the design and number of buttons.

The demo that needs to be shown doesn't have to be an actual game.  It just has to prove the concept and direction is good.  The demo could be as simple as controlling a gamecube game with the new controller...or tech demos like the DS had.

However, if they don't show a demo, then graphics are a must.  They are going to have to show the world that the concept comes with equal graphics to that of Xenon and PS3.

Those CNN reports could also easily be saying this:

"Despite Nintendo's revelation that games of the future will be controlled by motion, Sony and Microsoft scored huge crowds of fans eager to play the next generation systems."

Don'tHate742:  You are right this is the biggest E3 ever.  Microsoft is probably going to let the entire cat out of the bag.  Release Date, Specs, Games, and it will let people play something like a Halo 3 demo.  Just wait.  Sony knows this, and will come out with info for the PS3 as well.  Pontentially demos.

Nintendo needs to do the same.  They just can't sit on this hype of something revolutionary for another year.  It's stupid.  Right among these messageboards someone has got the concept for the Revolution written out.  I feel we have a pretty good idea.  Its not going to be a big surprise annoucement.  So they need that extra something special (like a demo) to prove the point.

Wandering_Nintendo-Fan:  That wasn't exactly why Nintendo 64 failed.  Sony made it desirable to publish for the Playstation.  Cheaper fees, cheaper media to create games on, larger storage device.

If Nintendo had a CD techonology instead of Cartridge then Nintendo would have probably held off Sony's advancements.

Sony only succeed because of third party development.

Revolution won't be the same.  Revolution could just demo a Mario game right now, and video some other stuff.  Then Nintendo can focus most of its show on the New Zelda, and the New DS games which will be going online.

Nintendo in an interview stated they will show something about Revolution.  They don't know how much they want to show.  There is obvious debate.  I think there is probably a big debate between people wanting to show as much as possible, and others wanting to show as little as possible.

I think a demo is a must.  If you let people touch and play with something, they will remember it more.  They will want to experience it again.  They will begin to dream about how great games will be with it.

If it is just a concept shown, then it will be too abstract to fully grasp and that dreaming, and desire won't be as strong...and could easily be swayed back to the PS3 or Xenon.

Nintendo definately needs to show more than just the concept at E3.  I think they need to show at least ONE demo.  That is all it would take.  If Mario was pushed back to Revolution and they could have you playing a small Demo level of whatever they are planning that would sell E3 for Nintendo.  Completely.

And if Nintendo did only one demo it wouldn't take from the Gamecube, DS, and Gameboy Advance games they are showing.  What it would do is ensure people are over there at the Nintendo booth trying these games.

You know Microsoft is going to be demoing there new system and probably have a playable Demo.  Sony will be showing hyped up movies of Monsters INC. graphics running real time gameplay...Nintendo has to show more than a concept to get the attention needed.

« on: April 05, 2005, 08:52:49 AM »
BILL:  Several of the rehashs, specially the sports Rehashs will be worth it to buy and play on the go.  So that kicks the number up for PSP.  I hate sports games, but you know that is true.

As for DS.  I would say there are 3 games you should own on the system, and 2-3 games that are just OK right now.

Those games you have to own are:
Super Mario 64 DS
Yoshi's Touch N Go  (Brilliant Old School gaming.  I love it.)
WarioWare (I am not a fan, but I understand the addictive nature of it.)

The other games depends on your taste of games, and what you want.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Let's Talk Controller
« on: April 05, 2005, 08:25:13 AM »
Wandering:  Your controller idea is interesting, but it has a few flaws.

The biggest problem is with the buttons for each finger.  Realistically it your pinkie and ring fingers are not good fingers to use for buttons.  They aren't very strong, and will be mostly used to keep the controller held and steady.  Also with four finger buttons, it would be very likely to accidentally push another button, specially using fingers you don't normally use.

One Button on the side should be enough for each controller.  If not, then no more than 2.

The other problem with that design is that it doesn't form into a traditonal controller very easily.  You mentioned the button layout is wierd, and it is...but also the playing a game usually designed for one solid controller split into two would be difficult, and that design isn't  very practical for combining the controller to one unit.

I would predict this.  If this information is being used for the Revolution controller then:

1)The  Controller will have two versions out.  A left handed version and a Right handed version.  The difference will be layouts reversed.

2)The Right controller will have 4 buttons.  One Big Button as a thumb resting place, surrounded (Gamecube Style) by 3 other buttons.

3)Two Analog triggers on the Side of the controllers with that digital click feature.

This is really a neat concept.

I think back to many interviews where Nintendo stated that a final controller design hasn't been decided yet.  I bet this is one of the finalists, and they wanted to patient it, even if they don't use it.

What I mean is, it is still very pausible to use wireless connection with the controllers.  In fact, it would be easier for Nintendo to create a wireless version really.

The only question with wireless would be if that would cause too many wireless signals.  4 to the console for multiplayer, 4 to each break away half.  That means 8 signals possible crossing and interfering.  Even more at LAN parties.

What is more likely is the same protocols for the Wireless WaveBird will be used to communicate with the system, however a wire would be used to communicate between systems.

Yes, lets change the look and design of one of the most noticably and known characters in video games, and in fact all of cartoons.  Do you realize Mario hangs out with such characters as Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse in instant recognition?  In some places people know how Mario is more than Mickey Mouse!!!

Mario is a timeless character that doesn't need to change.

I have no problems with the new style.  They still look like kids.  What I don't get is the massive love for this game.  I remember playing the N64 version, and I wasn't that impressed.  I didn't hate the game, but the cult following of the game is interesting.

TalkBack / RE: Soul Calibur III Exclusive to PS2
« on: March 24, 2005, 07:09:23 AM »
I think Sony has alot to gain from doing this...and I definately think Sony paid for this.

Nintendo has not been known as a fighting game system.  The first really great fighting game in years comes out and it sells best on Nintendo, granted its after Nintendo did some cozzing up to Namco, but it still sold better.

Sony paid for this exclusive to prevent Nintendo or Microsoft from making more ground in this genre....and to give Nintendo the middle finger.

I wouldn't be surprised if this backfires though, and Nintendo and Namco make a deal to include Link again, and perhaps another character from Nintendo.  If I was Nintendo that is the plan I would take.

7964
I really think Nintendo may hold Mario 128 back for the Revolution.  1 year to update the graphics and add more levels and such would be huge, and it would give Revolution the killer launch game we want.

Obviously, Zelda will be much later.  I could also see Retro working on another Metroid game for launch with the Revolution.

If Nintendo is able to launch 3 great games for the Revolution we will be set.

Mario
Smash Brothers
and
Metroid

This would be a great launch.

Here is another thought.  Imagine if the next Metroid game is allowed to be link hunters with the controls.  Revolution could have a launch title multi player game that would rock.

Well here is a problem with an assumption that Nintendo will only make a few games for the fans.  Why can't a new game for the fans also be designed to appeal and attract a new market of gamers as well.

Super Mario 64 did a great job of bringing new people the the market, as well as giving something for the fans.

To assume that Nintendo can't do both at the same time is kinda absurd.

7966
I also think Viewtiful Joe was probably too hard for mainstream.  It takes a commitment that most people do not have to be able to beat that game.

I still haven't beat the first one.  I would love to play the second one, but I will not buy another game I can't or won't want to beat.

NEMO:  You know you got something there about Super Mario Bros. 5.  There is still great ground to explore in 2D platforming.

Besides what I mentioned earlier about how great a new 2D game can play with the new Mario 64 moves included.  Imagine actual Cooperative play for the Mario game.

In Mario Super Star Saga we got to feel what it would be like to have a game where we control both brothers at the same time.

Imagine if the levels were designed to be played by yourself, but also have additional secrets and challenges if you played Co-Op with a friend.

Mario and Luigi could be designed to have special moves that compliment eachother, or moves that you do together to push the gameplay even farther.

This could even be used to create complicated boss fights.

Woot.  I like that idea.

Slingshot:  There have been PC games like what you suggested.  They haven't done too well.  It really is impossible to create a true Stock Market game anyway.  How do you produce the random/notso random life of business, hype, profit/loss, and people.

The best way to get the business user is to get smart software utilties (like the DS palmpilot) and also provide simple, smart games that they can play on the way.

I am actually predicting Nintendo to do much much better next generation, but I still say they will be considered number 2 or 3 depending...but it will be a tie.

I really don't see Sony doing that great next generation.  Microsoft is being extremely aggressive in marketing and delivering a unique product with Xbox 2.  I thought the whole HD generation was stupid...but I also think their online plan is brilliance.  Pushing a community and striving to create the perfect online experience will make the Xbox 2 the system to own for online gaming.  Period.  That alone will help boost Xbox above PS3s position.

On the PS3.  I haven't really heard, or read anything spectacular about it.  The rumors suggest it will use Blue-Ray disk technology for incredible storage and viewing high defination movies.  Well, I don't see the market really getting behind that as much as DVD technology.  It won't be an issue.  There isn't a large outcry for better home movie technology yet.

I also think technology isn't advancing as fast as we think it is.  Microsoft can easily design a system that will release early and still be close to equal to the competition in hardware specs.  Though reality is that won't really matter anyway.

Now, when it comes to the Revolution, Nintendo has an underground hype going on.  Their is an anticipation to see something great from Nintendo, and see a second coming.  See everyone respects Nintendo as a company, and knows how great they are.  Most people believe Nintendo will have a second coming and a rebirth.  Anything to shows innovation and creativity by Nintendo in the hardware will be embraced.  Just look at the success of the DS, and the excitement over the Revolution.  I think that is pretty good proof.

If Nintendo delivers half of what its promising then Nintendo will gain back its marketshare to number 2 easy.  If they totally blow everyone's mind and have the games to support it, then Nintendo will easily gain 1 place.

The more I think about Revolution, the more I begin to believe Nintendo isn't necessarly talking about just a new controller...but a whole new concept and understanding in gaming for us, but mostly for Nintendo.  I think Nintendo's revolution may actually be in the technology and how they use it to go online.  If this is the case, Nintendo may even out do Microsoft...but again they will have to beat that perception that MS knows online.

Those are just a few of my thoughts.

I have been waiting for a good Ninja Turtle Game.

Sadly I think Konami dropped the ball.  If they wanted to make a great game, they should have saved the original Port of Turtles Arcade and do a special Turtles Arcade game which features both Turtles arcade games untouched, and then added this as the bonus game.  I would have bought that.

I still want the new turtles game for the original Arcade game, but I don't want to play through the new game to play the old game.  I just won't put myself through that...and the Ninja Turtles Arcade game was one of my all time favorite games.

KDR_11K:  I really need to buy Mario Vs. Donkey Kong.  I don't know why I haven't yet.  I keep telling myself its worth it, but I don't like to just spend money.  I make a horrible gamer.

However, even Mario Vs. Donkey Kong isn't exactly what I mean.  That game is almost pure puzzle.  Very little twitch gaming platforming.  I want something to moves faster.  That includes larger more complicated levels.

Note, not all the levels have to be such drastic examples and so hard.  You can easily slow incorporate all the new moves together, until you have a game where moves are required to be perfectly blended together.

CouchMonkey:  I would really like to know if Sony is really losing money on the PSP and if so how much.  I am like you.  I just don't believe any business would market its product out of mass market appeal...and that is drastically out of mass market appeal.

Also, game prices going up IS definately a step in the wrong direction.  Its like the US Post office deciding to raise the price in stamps every year.  Does that make you want to use the Postal Services more or less.  Obviously, less.  I know it costs more and more to send letter out, but you are shooting yourself in the foot.  I will never send anything via mail unless I absolutely must.  I have too many other options to get my messages out.

With game prices going up, I will not buy as many games.  I will only buy the games I feel I must own, because they are enjoyable to me.  During the SNES age I bought Nintendo games, 3rd Party games and such.  During the Nintendo 64 I dropped to mostly just Nintendo.  Now I am down to only the best Nintendo published Gamecube games, and if prices go up, I will buy even less.  If prices were to drop though, I would be willing to invest in the best 3rd party games as well.

I am sure there are several people like this.  I am on a budget, and I think its time companies begin to realize that.

Also it isn't the collecting Items that is annoying about 3D games.  Its when collecting the items do not lead to fun challenging objectives.  Super Mario 64, and Sunshine were fun, because to collect a Star or Shine you had to not just get to it, but also DO SOMETHING.  The challenge wasn't just finding the object, but solving the puzzle, or doing something skillful to earn it.  The only Stars that were really frustrating in Sunshine were the Blue Coins.  I have all the Shines but 1 or 2 in that game, but I won't collect anymore, because it is so frustrating trying to find those remaining coins.

The next 3D Mario I think needs to stick somewhat to the basics.  I wouldn't mind an interconnected world hub, but I want to have definate indications of what is world 1 and so on, so I know how far I am advancing, and such.  One giant world can be too overwhelming sometimes, and can lead you into areas you aren't ready for yet.

I don't think 3D Mario is broken.  I really enjoy 3D Mario.  However, when I was playing 3D Mario, I thought to myself, it would be really cool to design a game that focused on 2D platforming with the movies from the 3D Mario games.  Basically I think if you bring the moves and skill needed in the 3D Marios (Specially Sunshine) and move them to a 2D Mario, you can make a more extreme Platformer.  One that is hard because it would require thought and skill to advance through the levels as well as the usual keen sense of timing needed for the harder 2D Mario games.

Adding in Dodge move I think would make it balanced and fair if an enemy is coming and you have already committed yourself to a jump or whatnot.

Imagine having a level that required you move as fast as you can because a Chain Chomp or heat seeking Bullet Bills are constantly after you.  The level would start out normal run and gun platforming, but would quickly require you to start Wall Jumping, U-Turn Flip jumping, and such.

This would obviously be a more advanced level.

Or how about an Auto scrolling air level, where you are bouncing from flying Turtle Shell to flying Turtle Shell (or platform) and a blocking wall comes up, so you Jump towards it and Wall jump off it to a higher Turtle Shell, or Platform to Continue on.  If you are too afraid to try that manuever you can try to do the Backflip over the wall and land back on your Turtle Shell, but that takes incredible timing to perform correctly.

Basically it can allow you to make a Mario Platformer, that is designed around constant movement and skilled jumping.

As for the 2-4 player modes.  I think it would be fun to have bonus levels that designed for multiplayer modes.    Also included on these bonus levels would be a special level that randomly generates an endless level that you and your friends can play.  This level would calculate how far you go as a team and gives you a score on teamwork, time played, Distance achieved, and such.  It could be a great challenge to see how long you can play as a team and how far you can reach.  Later on (specially if its online) you Nintendo can have tournaments where they design special levels that test your teamwork and speed at getting through the levels.  Prizes can then be awarded.

I don't mind a new 3D Mario, in fact I desire one greatly, however I would love this even more.
