Life on the farm will be a little bit more portable.

The planned Wii U version of Stardew Valley has been moved to the Nintendo Switch.

In a post on the game's blog, the developer confirmed the release dates for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions while noting "Looking at Wii U and the current gaming landscape, we made the difficult choice to shift our development efforts to creating a version for Nintendo Switch."

The Wii U version was announced on the first day of E3 this year.

Don't worry, at least we still have Project: Giant Robot to look forward to.

The game had to have been almost done, and there are none of the costs involved with shipping a physical version of the game, so there was really no reason to not go ahead and release the Wii U version. It's basically a big FU from the developer to Wii U owners.

I'd rather have the greater portability of the Switch, but to announce this so close to when the launch was supposed to be with people already excited for he Wii U version is just lousy. I guess I'm going to be playing Story of Seasons a few months longer to get my Harvest Moon fix.

I'm going to get a switch, but I wonder what will happen with Yooka Laylee.

Just out of curiosity I went and looked at how the game was made. Found this via Steam forums.

Quote
the game was made using C# and the XNA framework. Dev used Visual Studio 2010 as his IDE. All the graphics are made in Paint .NET, and the music/sfx are made in Propellerhead Reason.

Don't know how easy porting that to the Wii U's aging hardware would be but considering the dev(just one dude) and his publishers probably knew as much about the Switch as we did, the reveal probably swayed them enough to refocus their efforts.

I'm going to get a switch, but I wonder what will happen with Yooka Laylee.

Yooka-Laylee is a Unity game, so you figure they got a free license from developing the Wii U version. I figure that's still a safe bet.

It still had a Q4 2016 release window on Wii U as of two days ago and, as far as I can tell, there wasn't any word from the developer that they might forgo putting it on Wii U in favor of Switch until yesterday. The Switch reveal was also well over a month ago at this point. Even if this looked like the likely outcome to some of us, I can understand why some people feel blindsided when it was this close to its stated release date.

That's unfortunate, I was looking forward to this game.  I wish they had announced this a few days earlier, I would have picked up the PC version when it was on sale over the weekend.
