Episode 462: The Full Monty Punch

Getting hit by a dragon's spear is always a bad time.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41894/episode-462-the-full-monty-punch

It's February, the month of missing time, and apparently the start of Radio Free Nintendo's silly season. A punchy episode starts with the customary New Business, lead off by Jon. His resolution to only speak about PlayStation 4 games is immediately broken by his thoughts on 3DS eShop free-to-play Pokémon Picross. The man who never learned to love number puzzles finds it only took a synergy with his love of Pokémon to get him in. Come for tips on how to play Picross, stay for insight into a man's psychology. Greg and James discuss the latest DLC for Smash Bros. The release of the final two characters, Corrin and Bayonetta, gives them time to talk about the fan service master class one more time. Guillaume has had a chance to play Final Fantasy Explorers online, and has an update on the Monster Hunter-inspired Final Fantasy game. He lavishes praise such as, "It's a game I bought," and "I guess I'll keep playing it." He then pivots to Wii platform adventure game Muramasa. Yes, it's a gorgeous game and a lot of fun, but where the heck is Gui supposed to be going? Lastly, James takes a look back at 16 months of fitness. Wii Fit...ness U. No chicken wings were required to reach his health goals, but the Wii U Fit Meter helped all the same, giving its life in the process.

After a break, it's time for an utter failure of a "Thunderous Round" of Listener Mail. Topics include: Level 5-iest games, Quality of Life, and Zelda for Wii U. The crew even manages to answer a question about a Nintendo scarf without crashing the episode into a ditch! You can ask us about your choice in fashion accessories via our mailbag.

Just a reminder, we'll be doing our Retroactive for Viewtiful Joe on Episode 464. You can post your thoughts in the discussion thread. We'll also take comments via the mailbag. And lastly, keep sending us your thoughts on Xenoblade Chronicles X for our upcoming spoilercast. We will likely talk about X and it's predecessor, but if we do we will caution prior to the show's beginning.

Great "chemistry" this episode. Anyway I have an idea why Zelda and Metroid aren't as popular in Japan as they are in the US, could it be that the first installments of each series were Famicom Disk System exclusive in Japan putting them at a disadvantage in terms of nostalgia?

Bayonetta is REALLY not a character for people who casually play smash. almost all of her grounded normals have a terrible ammount of startup time, her dodges are garbage in order to try and push you towards witch time, and maybe the only one of the held A gun attacks you'll ever want to use in neutral is the downtilt one because it racks up a lot of damage on enemies on both ends of Bayonetta.

Honestly, I feel like you have to play her from netural in the same way one plays Zero Suit Samus from Netrual; with spaced short-hopped back airs and with neutral B and Forward-b. the real thing that sets this character apart is her CRAZY juggle potential. yeah, you can build a shitload of damage off of a witch time read or close out a stock, but more often than not your best bet is to catch your opponent with the end of grounded Side-B and convert it into something like Up-air, Side-B, Up-B, Side-B, first hit of Nair, and held Up-B.

A couple of her held aerials like Held UPair and Held N-air are great for gimping too.

Honeslty, I don't like the character, because while I understand HOW she's meant to be played, I imagine you have to put in a TON of time to see reuslts with her, and I feel like she's a character that tosses accessability out the window in order to be a character for a particular type of Super Smash Bros. fan. Y'know, the type who talk about using short-hopped Back-air as your main footsies tool. This even translates into her stage pretty much being the ideal tournament legal stage of a platform with other platforms that float in and out.

if Melee was about Fox and Final Destination, than Brawl was about meta Knight and Smashville and it's sole moving platform.

I also want to say that someone made a giant cell phone in minecraft and one particular popular youtuber has a video of him ordering Pizza through minecraft, so... you already have what you want, James!

Fake GBA carts: Make sure you buy from an Ebay store, they guarantee the carts are 100% genuine. I have had no problems at all so far with the big sellers.

Zelda Amiibo: Guru-Guru - The music box guy. When you tap him onto the PAD, you get a Song of Storms playing in the background. And maybe it rains :-)

I thought I'd chime in regarding the GBA question:

1) Don't forget that GBA supports GBC games too. So you might consider the Oracle Zelda games, a classic Pokemon game, etc.
2) Kirby and the Amazing Mirror is co-op, though it IS a platformer. Most multiplayer games I can think of for GBA are competitive....
3) I cannot recommend Four Swords for GBA. I did not enjoy playing it two-player with Jonny a while back. LttP is good, though.

I just wanted to congratulate James on the weight loss.  I lost a similar amount of weight and it has changed my life.

I have never stuck long with electronic gadgets or apps related to health for anything other than basic tracking.  It will be interesting to see if Nintendo can do something different if they ever hit the Quality of Life thing full force as Iwata proposed.

Possibly my favourite episode of season (insert relevant number since Jonny retired) so far. That was great.

I think Greg is probably on the mark with why Japan isn't as big on Zelda as the west is. Honestly, as much as I like most of the games that I've played in the series, introducing more RPG elements is something I kinda wish they would do as well.

When Guillaume said that he wanted to play Muramasa before it got re-released, I was thinking that he was too late on that one since Muramasa got re-released on Vita years ago.

...unless he meant a VC re-release.

Yeah, I meant the VC. I don't have a Vita, although I was aware they ported the game to that platform.

So both Jon and James are wrong.  Miyamoto's underwear is gold, like his Mii's pants.

Regarding Link's voice, I've loosened my position in the last week or so.  I used to say "absolutely not" for all the usual reasons mentioned.  However, I now believe that having him speak incredibly rarely (I'm talking Samurai Jack levels of rare speech) might work.  It would still play to his silent nature while still giving him some lines.

If they're going to make Link speak, it doesn't have to be volumes. Here's looking at you, Other M. However, I think it's important to note Zelda's staying power, and how the character already does have an iconic voice that might not work very well for dialogue.

Great answers and chemistry this episode. Having played an ungodly amount of Explorers in its first week of release (it's kind of tapered off a bit since I hit post-game), the appeal of the game seems to lie in its cyclic gameplay, as well as the variety in boss fights. I wasn't too impressed with the Eidolons at first and hoped they would mix the encounters up, but they eventually do just that in a way I wasn't expecting that ends up pretty cool. You also can, in fact, play around with your class and function as a different role in the multiplayer which is a neat thing to do in a Final Fantasy title where you're not controlling a party.

If any Zelda game has voice acting it should be done by the UK team. Their voice acting is not as over the top as NoA. The original xenoblade is pretty good.
