Nintendo Releases New Zangeki no Reginleiv Trailer

Watch out for falling limbs.

Nintendo's upcoming action title Zangeki no Reginleiv (Dynamic Slash) has a new trailer, featuring Norse deities Freyja and Freyr going up against some nasty giants.  This is the first Nintendo game ever to be rated CERO D in Japan, primarily due to the blood-soaked manner in which you can use Wii MotionPlus to sever the limbs of your enemies.

Zangeki no Reginleiv also supports the Classic Controller, and boasts four-player online co-op play.  It is developed by Sandlot (creators of Earth Defence Force), and is scheduled for Japanese release on February 11, 2010.

I really hope Nintendo sent some of their best programmers  and pulled every graphical trick in the book out for this title. This is their latest attempt and pleasing the core and a bar raising(for the Wii) graphical presentation would let everyone know that Nintendo is not playing around and they are very capable of providing the type of graphical experience that most of Nintendo's games traditionally lack.

The problem is that this game appears to be a niche title.  It's like a Fire Emblem game without the cult following to back it.

Doesn't mean they can't make it appeal to peoples shallowest perceptions of graphical prowess and present the game in a way that will appeal visually to the core even if it's not exactly showing the game for what it is. That's marketing and it's worked pretty well for lots of other games.

Not if those titles don't have the gameplay to go along with the graphics.  Last time I checked, "The Core" also likes exceptional gameplay.  See: Modern Warfare 2.

It's Nintendo, we already expect exceptional gameplay.
Now it's time to market to the graphic whores, the Nintendo faithful will probably buy just to support the effort if the game is any good.

The graphics are probably about as good as you can expect considering everything that's going on. Dozens (hundreds?) of characters on screen plus some rather large environments.

If you do that with a Sandlot title you're going to get a framerate that would embarrass a powerpoint presentation. They already spend all the system power and then some on throwing 100 colossus-sized enemies at you.

The problem is that this game appears to be a niche title.  It's like a Fire Emblem game without the cult following to back it.

It has the EDF cult following.

MW2 exceptional gameplay? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
All MW2 has going for it is the tons of unlockables it has that trigger the gotta-catch-em-all mentality, it's a terrible competitive game with the unlocks and a terrible team game with the whole killstreak whoring that encourages hero mentalities.

Figured I'd get that reaction from somebody, that's why I added that in there.  Yes, as much as it galls you KDR, MW2's gameplay is airtight.  That's why it's a hit and many other FPSes have fallen by the wayside.

It's not airtight, it just works well enough. I don't believe gameplay was the big factor why MW2 is more popular than other FPSes considering it doesn't play better and only has a pavlovian machine going for it, it sold on the strength of CoD4 (supposedly that had a very strong SP campaign too) and no major fuckups since then (except for dedicated servers, javelin glitch, OP dual shotguns, witchbladers, ... but except for the really annoying matchmaking system and the host migrations those aren't THAT major in their impact). It's really suspicious how many "yay, you rule!" praises the game vomits at you for every frag, sometimes I get modifiers for my frag popping up for like 10 seconds after the kill. It really seems to be all about making you feel like the hero, flying on a plane fragging everyone in sight, not really much about playing seriously. Just a casual game designed to make you feel good, not a tough game to challenge your abilities and especially not a team game that requires working together (not that random matchups ever work together, maybe that's how the game succeeds: Teamwork doesn't apply but a team always means someone else to blame for the loss).

I won't hold the fuckwits who complain about "campers" in a domination match against the game though.

As much as MW2 is polished it still lacks button customization, but that's just my opinion.

Huh? Pretty sure there was a keybinding menu in the options. They're just overloaded as **** though, there's no way to switch from the rifle GL to your secondary weapon without going to the straight primary first.

Is the game even playable on the consoles? Considering how little time you have from spotting an enemy to having to open fire the console controls would seriously break it, no?

Console FPSs run on Easier Than Hero Modes.  Enemies usually MISS the first shots, and as a modern soldier you have the advantage of LIFE METERS to offset the additional time it takes aim less-than-properly.

In multiplayer, you have the safety cushion called lag, for better or worse.

Indeed, on a console the aiming response isn't as quick when compared to the aiming response of a mouse. To me it doesn't make much of a difference, but that's because I'm an average skilled player.

My complaint isn't the aiming, it's that knifing is mapped to R3 (which is also R2 and is used for aiming). R3 is quite sensitive on PS3, so a lot of times for me when I try to do a quick unexpected aim, R3 is accidently pressed, which causes the knifing animation, which by the time I'm about to actually aim and shoot I'm already dead.

In multiplayer, you have the safety cushion called lag, for better or worse.

For worse in 99.999999999999999% of games played.
