Nintendo Is 120 Years Old Today!

Today marks the 120th anniversary of Nintendo, which is Japanese for "Leave luck to heaven" according to the Touch Generations site. The company was first created on September 23, 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi in Kyoto, Japan, with their first product being Hanafuda cards. They eventually evolved into a video game company, in fact Japan's third most valuable company with a worth of $85 billion.

In the 1950s, Nintendo decided to venture into other venues. They created a chain of love hotels, established a cab company, owned a TV network, and ran a food company. These ventures failed and Nintendo lost money, with sales of the cards also slowing.

In the 70s, Nintendo entered the electronic era, a product focus that continued to this day. In 1975 they entered the arcade scene with EVR Race, and in 1977 they released their first videogame console named the "Color TV Game". Years later, the release of Donkey Kong, designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, would be their biggest arcade hit.

In 1980, Nintendo released their first game handheld called the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_And_Watch">Game and Watch. Created by Gunpei Yokoi, the Game and Watch series featured games such as Octopus, Oil Panic, and many more. The Game and Watch series evolved into the Game Boy product line, one that continued until the release of the Game Boy Advance in 2001. The Nintendo DS followed in 2004.

In 1983, the company followed up their first console venture with the release of the Family Computer, popularly known as the Famicom.  The Famicom would become known around the world as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).  It was released in North America in 1985, with its launch considered a fool's errand following the spectacular crash of the Atari 2600 era of home consoles.  The system's success resulted in more consoles to follow including the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the Nintendo 64, the GameCube, and most recently the Wii.

Happy birthday Nintendo!  You don't look a day over 100.

120 years of smiles!

Best product Nintendo ever created? The ultra hand:

I miss Gunpei Yokoi, one of the best designers ever.

I had never heard of that Color TV Game until a few months back, I don't think it is common knowledge that Nintendo produced that. I used to think that the Game & Watch was their first line of games.

Well I was looking around the net today and I found out that today is Nintendo's Birthday. September 23rd.

They have been in existance for 120 years.

I believe Maxi was the one that noticed & mentioned it first.

I thought this thread looked a little different than the birthday thread! No wonder, thanks for clearing that up BnM!!

So did anyone do anything to comemorate the 120th birthday?

I played Brawl since all of fighters are part of Nintendo's history.
Maxi is dead. I killed him and took his posts and changed genders.

You are not a classic Nintendo fan if you don't know about the rocky history between Mario & Sonic.

So Sonic is part of Nintendo's History.

And finally having the ability to let Mario and Sonic duke it out MADE history. So there.

Well, I suppose the rivalry with Sega was a pretty important part of gaming history, as I don't think Nintendo would be the same without that fierce competition.
